    Blue = AudioScape Clones

      bro i heard the difference right away!!! its not a small difference, though i have a very good monitoring system, heard the mic bleeds also from the drums on the vocals, but bro the vintage is absolutely worth it!!

      Glad you enjoyed it, worth it? It depends. Many times I do full recordings/mixes and don’t even use my Pultecs. It just depends who it’s worth it to.
      And yes I head a big difference as well. Especially in the room.

      @@RiotHomeRecording i enjoyed it big time! this is the only video that revealed the difference for me! i think all the other clones add some harmonic distortion thats not supposed to be there. while the vintage adds pure saturation thats very very pleasant for the ears.

    Here’s my thoughts after listening again a couple months later.
    I think both signal chains sound extremely smooth and good. The vintage original has an open presence in the mid range that really stands out to me and I prefer it. The AudioScape chain has a more exaggerated fluffed bottom end that’s adds a puffiness to the sound. The overall results even strengthens further my initial thoughts and feeling. I’m very glad I went the AudioScape route.

    Thanks for doing this! I was checking out the Audioscape EQ yesterday for the first time. I can't hear much of a difference with the EQ. But the combination of the Eurie vs Audioscape, I can hear a difference.

    In all honesty, I think that the AudioScape gear will sound just like the vintage units sound, when they're vintage. We will never know what a real Pultec and Urei 1176 sound like brand new and it doesn't matter. These are scary close and in a mix the difference maybe more negligible. I enjoyed this! Thank you for sharing!

    The 76F sounds better than my UA1176. Stam was nice too, but some weird thing going on in the 2-3khz range, and waited 6 months with no communication! Audioscape was delivered in 1 week to Australia. Sounds more modern than my UA1176 - brighter, more presence.

    The vintage units just get you to finished sound faster. Say you track through the units. When comes time to mix everything will sit better and less processing will be needed. I own audioscape units as well. They are wonderful tools to get me where I need to go faster. You can get great results with analog and/or ITB these days. Its more about how much extra time and work you have to put in on the way. I agree, the mid range is where the magic happens with vintage units and that is where the magic happens in the mix. Thanks for this comparison!

    Thanks, this is great. Dramatically different sound between “red” and “blue”, beyond component sound - totally different eq curves and compression character, I would not believe those are the same settings! The “blue” certainly feels more brash, to the extent that I probably would choose different settings for that vocal based on the result, but of course you’re not mixing you’re doing a comparison! Thanks again very informative

    Steve, I agree 100% with your final thoughts. I have several Audioscape pieces of gear, and I love them a lot. Their equipment is outstanding for the price, and my last stage is always to have the job well done the best I can, working with the available gear. I think it was the first time I watched an A/B comparison between the Audioscape EQP-A/76F set up and their corresponding original gear. Great video. Thank you for sharing...Finally, I think the "blue" is the Audioscape set up.

    Great vid. blue sounds like it’s more present and coloured . I find most of my vintage gear is darker and less sibilant. Red sounds more vintage. It also placed the vocal in one place. Choosing from your tests I pick blue only if they were dialed in the same.

    • @RiotHomeRecording

    Awesome awesome video!!! Thanks for your review on these. I was looking at the Warm audio version. But I saw on a forum that their customers were selling their units to get the #Audioscape version. So I told myself “I might as well follow suit then”. I watched another guy do a shoot out on the #Audioscape and was blow away at how they add so much depth the the mix. I’m completely sold on the #Audioscape. Now just have to save and hope they finish restocking by the time I have the money. I know they make a certain amount at a time. Hoping to get my hands on one.

  • @herschoolcolors

    Thanks very much for doing this. Red is vintage. There seems to be less gain reduction/a higher threshold on the audioscape example. I know everyone is having spasms for the AS stuff right now, but I actually haven’t heard any demos that sound “right” for lack of a better word-where your ears relax and you just go “ah ok, I’m not listening to a piece of equipment anymore”

    • @RiotHomeRecording

      Thanks! There’s differences, keep in mind that I’m using these in a mix and they do what I want them to do. I’m very satisfied with how these tools work especially at their price point.
      It’s hard to describe sound and what equipment does but I really think you nailed it with the “I’m not listening to equipment anymore” that is so true and a Great way to describe quality sounding gear.

    I really wanted to like the Audiescape but I hear the scratchy quality in most of their products, based on the demo performed on vocals. I agree that their take on the Pultec was just not up to the mark, whereas their take on the 1176 F rev was closer. However, while the original 1176, had this discernible, sheen and smoothness to it, the 76F had this additional unpleasant scratchiness to it. And the differences are audible, even on my phone speakers, and much more prominent when heard through my M50x cans.

    • @RiotHomeRecording
      @RiotHomeRecording  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Good ears, yes I agree they’re not exactly the same, but the price of AS and vintage units aren’t the same either. And I think audioscape is good.
      I’ve never heard a clone beat any original piece of gear. And I’ve done a ton of shoot outs.

    • @axxonthetrack
      @axxonthetrack 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@RiotHomeRecording Thank you, and I agree. They certainly do present a fair (maybe even excellent) alternative to folks who might be unable or unwilling to shell out the price of the originals, and to be fair, their products are pretty good, especially considering the price, and arguably much better than clones made by many of the other companies.
      As for the sound, I notice the scratchy quality in their other products as well, including their interpretation of the STA level, though their interpretation of the LA2A seems to not have this quality in as pronounced a manner. I wonder if their choice of transformer, or other specific component parts is a contributing factor to it, assuming that their circuitry itself is identical to, or closely mirrors the original circuitry, barring updates needed to replace point to point with surface mount.
      Like you said, perhaps the mismatch in the sonic quality of their pieces is attributable to the price point at which they are selling their products, which surely must require cutting some corners. What I find somewhat funny though is their repeated representations that they painstakingly use components that are identical or equivalent to the components used in the originals that their cloning; one would assume that if this were the case, the results would also be almost identical, even if not exactly. But the differences are fairly noticeable. I wonder why companies like Pulse, or Retro, which also make reissues of vintage gear, are able to get a closer match to the originals. I’m not a tech person, but maybe the products really are more than a sum of their components.

      Agreed, with all you said. 2 things I’ll add.
      #1 old equipment that sways a tad out of spec could result in a pleasing effect.
      #2 the epa put restrictions on core components used to make this equipment. Restrictions that were not in place in the 50’s, 60’s & part of the 70’s. For example the laminations used in transformers are much cleaner than they used to be. This 100% effects the sound. Maybe the metal/steal has been recycled so it’s not as pure. Composite resistors, capacitors, and transistors all effect the sound. And although their tolerances have improved maybe they sacrificed a bit of sound in the process.
      I will say it again, I’ve never heard a clone sound as good as an original.
      I’ve shot out old 1073’s aside by side with BAE’s that claim to be exact. Nope I heard a massive difference and so did everyone in the room.
      My Flea 47 mic, I directly compared it to at least 4 old Neumann U47’s. Every time I thought the originals had something that just sounded overall better.
      Many companies are making a lot of money of the old classic gear. And some are definitely closer than others.
      Ultimately it comes down to the talent. I rather have a great singer tracked through an SM-58 than an average singer through a U47.

    likely the thing that is tripping you up with the knobs is the material they're made of. the knobs on the orig Pultecs were likely bakelite whereas now everybody uses molded plastic. it's likely the pots are much different in throw as well compared to what they would've been using back then.

    I don't think people really understand this now a day. they are chasing some outdated equipment that is headed to obsoletion. Its people that don't know how to mix and think it going to help the overall mix and its not. you have to put in the effort to learn and learn to listen. It's a skill like basketball you do it over and over and get better. At the same time this mentality is driving the prices up on the same gear they think they need! having thousands of plugins and all that is crazy. Master what you have, when you stumped figure a new way and create a new sound. If it sounds good its good period. Stop listening to everyone bragging on what gear they have and thinking you need that also, in order for you mix to shine because you don't! You need to record good and learn to mix... ITB, OTB or hybrid, whatever.... stop chasing the old sounds, create your own sound. Make it musical and i guarantee no one going to say, hey you didn't use the original Neve, or 1176...lol. The people who you sell to, don't even know what that is!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All the tech out today there is a million ways to get 1176 sound, Neve sound etc... It's just a tool for your workflow and creativity, and nothing more. A pencil is a pencil no matter who made it... Just don't use a pin when you need a pencil.

So having something made right back then with the actual core elements being pure not watered down and recycled. It means something and can be felt and heard.
      Company’s now will do whatever they can to maximize profits even if that means having a less quality product.

    What I am hearing from you is this.
    Gear matters.
    Good gear matters.
    But the best gear doesn’t matter.
    To me this is an conundrum and a contradiction.
    I understand that you want to give props and respect to your audioscape affiliates
    But for me it’s the same dilemma I have with plug-ins,
    Either one is better or they are the same.
    And if they are the same, then that makes one obsolete. (Either plug in or clone)

    • @RiotHomeRecording
      @RiotHomeRecording  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Blue House Studios, I’m glad you like my videos and I really appreciate your comment. And yes I agree on it sounding contradictory.
      The reason, there’s no correct answer.
      It depends on the person and each persons wants and needs are different.
      If someone can afford the vintage original and that’s what they want, they should go for it! Why? Because it doesn’t get better then an original classic. Exactly as I said in the video.
      If someone wants the original but can’t make sense of spending that much money, then no they should not buy it and look for a cheaper alternative. That’s what I did and I’m very satisfied with my purchases.
      I always give my honest thoughts and impressions on gear. I have no benefit to do otherwise because I make nothing and get no discounts on anything. My TH-cam channel is my personal account and non monetary. I spend a lot of time and effort on these videos. I do it for one reason...
      I love recording music and the gear that makes that happen.
      The only affiliation I have with AudioScape is me being a full paying customer. I did get free shipping but they do that for everyone in the US.
      Thanks again I appreciate you!

      @@RiotHomeRecording I really appreciate you and your channel diving into things others dare not to. It's funny to have so many clones of classic gear but hauntingly very little 1 to 1 shootouts with them. I fully understand the market that was created to address the ever growing tens of thousands of enthusiast . Without sounding elitist, I simply question the the need for this space other than the ones creating this market. I find it criminal to hear "pros" endorsing plug ins as being just as good as something like a real pultec. To me, it's logically no less than evil. It's misleading and detrimental. I too love music and love knowing what makes it tick. Cheers my fellow dude.

      What’s funny is when you see these big name engineers trying to push their signature plug in bundle on people as they sit in front of a big console with walls of outboard gear.
      Meanwhile their laughing their ass off because their plug ins bundle with waves is paying for their Neve consoles. Literally selling software and turning around and buying hardware. Every vintage classic they can find. It’s better then money in the bank.
      Try reselling a plug in, you lose your ass!
      I do like my plug ins tho! Hahaha

    The pultec was louder, so pretty hard to compare.

    • @RiotHomeRecording
      @RiotHomeRecording  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The volume was never changed as you can see in the video it was a straight patch over, the difference you might be hearing is apparent volume, the Pultec has a dimension and the clearness in the mids could be perceived as louder. When I did the video I seen both chains on final cuts db meters and they’re extremely close. If you feel one is louder you can change the volume up or down on either one and compare it that way.

      Hi Jerry
      Sometimes I use the 1176 when tracking vocals, bass, snare, and guitar. For the vocal in this video I didn’t use the 1176 for tracking I used it for mixing. Many times I use a fatso for tracking vocals or a Gates Sta level. Just depends.

      I think you need to do a shoot out between the New Pultecs (Pulse Technologies) and the Vintage one.
      They supposedly have to patent now or some deal to use the name, so id assume it would be close.

    If you say that your original is a 10, what number could you give the AudioScape in how similar they are ?

    • @RiotHomeRecording

      I’d say the number is,
      6-7 for the eq
      8-9 for the compressor
      The compressor is closer to the original than the Pultec eq.

      I agree with you, it’s very good considering the price difference. As I’m sure you know you get what you pay for, and if something cost more money there’s usually a reason why. It’s built better, sounds better, etc… I think for the money AudioScape is very good. My ears are very sensitive to cheap gear. I hear it. I feel it. I could tell if it has lived a life. If it has character. Certain gear is very special that’s why it achieves the status of being a classic, Neve, api, Telefunken, Neumann, Akg, Royer, Urei, Pultec, Gibson, fender, Ludwig, Etc…
