You are right. We had some serious problems with this engine in this video. We had to do some major work. Rebuilt one of the heads, replaced the #2 piston, new injectors, spark plugs, mag, starter, injector pump...list goes on. Have you seen the newer videos? It runs amazing!
Perfect! I always wished all larger diesel engines in equipment would start this way. Start on gasoline then when warm, switch over to diesel. I'm addicted to the sound of these engines!
Engines made to start on gas and switch to diesel have many extra ports and valves in the cylinder head. Not a lot of room for water jackets - the heads liked to overheat and crack.
More of a compression problem. The free spot can be heard as the motor is turning over, and at the end of the video, the hissing valve can be heard. White smoke never goes away in front stack, biggest problem in first three cylinders. You can adjust the pump all you want, in my opinion you will accomplish little or nothing until you pull the heads. Or at least take the valve covers off and see if there's any clearance. To make it start quickly a on gasoline, make sure the starting butterflies are free to snap completely closed. Any air leaks here will mean less air flow through the carburetor. If all is well there, Check for decent spark and clean spark plugs. As recommended by I.H., run the engine in gas mode a couple minutes before shutdown, to burn away all traces of fuel, to facilitate the next starting. Shut the gas off at the starting tank and allow engine to consume all the gasoline. After engine stops, change back to Diesel mode, to allow the starting valves to cool on their seats.

I worked one of these for 20 years, chaining scrub, then with two Shearer majestic disc ploughs. Like your convrersion job on the old generator ! Would have slipped out the injectors and checked them !
When I seen the name Eric Larson I got all excited as I have a very good friend in Eastern Australia by the name Eric Larson and he also is a big IH and Farmall collector. .Jack . The Old Scovy now from central Fl.
We have the same exact dozer in our back yard. We towed it to a resting place above our orchard. It was running when my dad passed away in early '82. Any tips on getting it running again. It has gas start with a magneto, which switches over to diesel. Some older guys say these machines worked better than a hydraulic blade for creating a good grade. Anyway, I remember that ours had a new clutch put in, new bearings in the final drives, and a complete in frame for the engine. I used my excavator to tow it. It pulled a lot better after I released the brake.

Hello Eric what a wonderful video I was going to say we have the same machine here has not been used in 4 years . Purchased it from a man in Michigan . This one has the International Grill gaurd heavy duty and on top of the center of the blade it has the International Logo . If you would be interested in this machine for parts or etc please let me know thanks again Grant R
Thanks Grant! My brother who is in the video may be interested in your machine. I will let him know and he may be in touch with you. These are great old dozers and certainly unique in way they operate.
Starting on gas then switching over to diesel when warm is nice ,but I had a friend of mine overhaul a 450 international farm tractor he told me he had a fortune in the engine like 7500 dollars in the engine alone!!!whew I hate to see what amdozer size engine would cost!

There is something wrong that should not sound like that or smoke like that bad injector pump or it need service when starting dont hang on to the starter short cranks till it starts otherwise you will burn that starter out

How embarrassing to have to own such a hunk of junk antique old relic.... That thing needs to go to the scrap yard and you need to buy a new one.......
Thanks for your input! There is nothing embarrassing about it Rico. Just because something is old doesn't make it junk. It pushes dirt just like a new one.
Love that sounds can't get enough of it my dad worked on a lot of them and caterpillars awesome thanks for sharing this video with us
I had a 1942 td 14 I used in the bush winter logging, never had a problem starting it.

Miguel S My brother is the guru when it comes to these old machines. I will have him write up a list of things to check and send it to you.
@@rondavis2791 Not the one I got. Just too busy with other things as usual.
Sounds like the starter would wear out before you get it started.

Jeffery Everett. There a few that show it working. This video does drag on a little.
These gas start diesels need to warm up well before you work them or you risk cracking the head
White exaust is usaly timing

Yes, not many around like this anymore!
Never run a starter that long.
You are right! We had to have it rebuilt. It was the original one!
