The Caterpillar Tractor Company presents “Report on the Giant,” a 1950s color film examining the D9 “the giant of the earth movers.” (The D9 is a large track-type tractor usually sold as a bulldozer and equipped with a detachable large blade and a rear ripper attachment.) The D9 is shown in various settings, such as hauling timber through forests, moving raw material in an industrial setting, and separating heavy rock. “Wherever it is working, the D9 is making the most severe assignments look commonplace,” says the narrator. There are scenes of the equipment at work at the west Texas town of Guadalupe Peak (mark 01:23) and an interview with an owner of the equipment who talks about its performance and various jobs starting at mark 01:52. “It’s power and its ruggedness” are cited as just two of its positive attributes at mark 04:22. This is followed by additional scenes of D9 being used as a bulldozer, pushing material into a hopper at mark 05:10, stripping the overburden (the soil and subsoil above the bedrock), and using it in a coal-stripping setting. The film rolls on with more scenes of the earth-moving equipment and additional interviews with satisfied owners touting its superiority, particularly in coal country and road-widening projects in California. Although the machinery is tested by heavy boulders at mark 12:14, the D9 still gets the job done. “The D9 does the job on a scale that equipment users would not have dreamed but 10 years before,” says the narrator at mark 14:40. As the film nears an end, we see scenes of the D9 on an interstate job site in the Midwest and working among the Redwoods in California, and the narrator reminds us that “it is the one crawler tractor that has earned the right to be known as ‘giant of the earth movers!’”

I love old CATs. Best dozer ever. I learned how to operate a dozer in a 76 D-8k. I miss that dozer so much. Incredible amount of torque and gorgeous styling. Let out the decelerator and a mushroom cloud of black smoke and then the turbo screaming and you spin the globe beneath me as the torque starts getting applied and material rolling in front of your blade. Great memories but the biggest dozer since that was a high sprocket D-6 from the late 90s. I love construction and dozer work from initial cut to final grade is incredibly fulfilling and creates a close connection to the machine and adds to the pride I take in my work at the limit of my abilities. Every hour spent is that much more experience that much more confidence as well as further pushing myself and thoroughly study the machine and feel of the machine to become one man and machine. To me as an operator the dozer is the one piece of equipment that you have to get a feel for their individual quirks and depending on the wear and maintenance, how much slop is in it I feel you need to have more feel for a dozer than sat an excavator.

When I was given the chance to train on a D9, in the army,
the grin on my face was 3" wider than the blade.
Later, they trained me on the Centurion AVRE, with it's 16 foot blade.
This was in preparation for Operation Motorman in Northern Ireland.
That puppy could clear barricaded streets without spilling my tea.
Years later, I drove a D6, which is lovely bit of kit to play with, except,
due to noise it's tracks make, gained me the name of, clatter-clogs!
Nowadays, since I'm retired, and I go fell walking, for leisure..
That smile is still there, as I do it, in sized 9 Caterpillar boots!

The first dozer I ever operated was one of these . It had a front mount winch & rear hydraulic ripper. Soon learned that cable blade needed a special touch to get the best from it. Oh yeah & who could ever forget the pilot ( donkey ) starter motor . Got an old photo of me pushing out a hwy cutting near Streaky Bay South Australia 73/74 . Turbo whistle sounded good too .

I was a mechanic for a company that liked running old iron.
Even back in the early 80s it was hard to find a Cat operator that knew how to handle a cable operated front blade. And it was a real mess when an operator got the cables fouled.
Adam Eidemiller inc. Is still in business and more than likely still has that Dozer

For many years, the D8 was the largest of Cat's crawlers. The D9 changed all of that...
and the D10 changed ALL THAT ..... AGAIN

The D9 was the turbocharged version of the D8.
when my grandpa worked on building the new york thruway in the 50s they would use a D9 to push start the belly dump trucks. they parked 4 or 5 in a line then pushed them all to pop start them to save time.

Yeah I bought it off a guy in northwest Ohio right on the Pennsylvania line he had it setting in a dry Barn for about 20 years resting. The o'l motor is in so good of shape it will start off the pony motor with no either and that's a rarity for a old cat D 3 53
Pit run gravel haven't heard that term in a long time ,& I've been watching a few dirt company videos for years and still don't see or hear them talk like they did back then in way more Normal times ,the world seems to be getting crazier by every passing day right along with most appearl companies Dumbing down quality by the masses.

Fun Fact the mountain at 1:23 is the Guadalupe Peak , the tallest point in Texas. That road is US 62 \ US 180. Runs thru the small small community of Pine Springs.
When I was younger I worked for a construction outfit that ran old equipment including a 1958 D9H
It had a 2 cylinder gas engine for starting the main engine.
You had to fire up the Pony motor which used a heavy-duty electric motor, then engage it to the powerplant's flywheel. Once the main engine was spinning fast enough you started feeding it fuel as it picked up speed it would disengage the Pony motor, then cut gas to it as you fed more fuel to the main engine.
Cold mornings were always fun.

Great footage of machines and men back then , thank you Caterpillar, l especially enjoyed the on the job interviews with the supers or formans. Plus Moving 2 to 3 times of material at the concrete plant is something else, wonder what machine the D9 replaced ?

I thought the same thing although I can’t place any section of rt 31 being 4 lanes wide except for a small section between mt pleasant and hunker. Maybe that is where this was filmed.

the 1954 D9 WAS IN AN 18A and a 19Aseries,,,18s had a diesel fuel lubed torque converter behind a 3 speed tranny.THE FUEL LINE SUPPLYING THE BIG 6 CYLINDER MOTOR came off the bottom of the transmission....down side was that you were exspaected to keep an over half full tank of fuel.....or they would run hot
There was one even bigger in the junkyard for years. Had the 16 ft blade and monster trolley bars.
Those were the days no exhaust muffler's. just straight out exhaust pipe. nothing like the Cat growl.

I’ve got a 18a that still runs well. Use for cleaning out stock tanks and pulling a Rome disk.

They still had the operators seat positioned off to the left on these dozers ,Wonder what generation or year did they place the seat in the center of the machine ? Would love to learn how to run a bull dozer & see what it's like becoming a true catskinner without the fur of course.
The entire operators station (seat, console, etc. was re-designed for improved operator comfort and control with the migration from the D9 series E through to the D9 series G.
Does anybody know why these advertisements were basically only done for crawler tractors/bulldozers ? I saw one ad for a large wheel loader and one for a scraper, aside from that only bulldozers. Why is it like this ?
Leon Schmidt I don’t think they sold them like they did ford f series. Everyone doesn’t need a d9 so the limited customer base is why there’s limited advertising.

The Babrams DP tabk was based on the Cat D9 bulldozer. So was the Sovuiet T92 tank. They has the same ebginmes and tracks but armor steel to stop the bullets and flame thrwoings
The sign at 04:53 is for Roanoke Sand and Gravel in Middle Island, NY. A brief search shows they were "founded in 1984". Yet the film is from the 50s. What am I missing?

The ripper on the d9 @2:50 has a sticker that says Beckwith Machinery Co. on it. I have a 1944 D2 that came from that same company. Interesting.
Beckwith Machinery Company in Murrysville, PA. It is still at the same location in 2024 along Route 22 and is now owned and operated by Cleveland Brothers.
Man were those D9 single shank rippers ever toothpick skinny in those days compared to the fat ones of today. They must have re - sold a bunch of those due to complete snaps of the tooth. I thought everything was overbuilt back then , not these things they were under built.

I think it would be neat if they occasionally had the erant piece of lint or hair go thru the screen or stutter like an old 16mm film. ;-)
Our transfer system is a bit too high tech to allow that ... those hairs or lint can scratch the films so we use compressed air and rollers to prevent that from happening.
How these engines have low hp but max torque..

how inefficient- dragging all those logs through that slop. What sawmill would want mud ground into all those logs. Today excavators and haul trucks rule.
India uses energy efficient elephants for logging. lol
um most log skidders still drag them.......
They dump them off at the yard into ponds or lakes and they get washed off and they also have spray washers also in the mill. Allot mills have debarking machines so it doesn't matter if they get mudded up.
I did see cat D9 old school 🏫 w a manual transmission but I didn't get 2 see it work because the guy never even start it and do any work w it OMG 11 9 2O22
