"As much as I think he's a knob... I quite like working with Jeremy" - And that's Top Gear in a nutshell, it may continue without Clarkson... but it won't be Top Gear.
Honestly if I had to sit down and talk with one, it would easily be James may. While I find clarkson is the best presenter, or funniest, he’s not the dude I want to sit with and have a beer with. Richard hammond is probably who I’d want to talk with about cars, and James may I feel like I could practically talk anything and have an interesting conversation with.
That, ladies and gentlemen, is a true friend. Doesn't toss him under the bus, he genuinely stood by him to the greatest possible extent. We all may joke, but James May is a great man.
@@sigmamalegrindset132 As someone who's a fan of both groups, that point is spot on. It's the main fault in my/Carsons (ironically I share his name lol) generation, we are incapable of recognizing that we all make mistakes like these at one point in our lives or another. It's one of the root cause of the mental health crisis as well, people believe their lives are over from one mistake
May is a ride or die. Left a multi-million dollar contract, not fully knowing if he'd ever work again, to stay a team with his best friend. That's loyalty
realistically they were very likely to get a new contract with someone else when the new top gear airs and the views dropped it just so happened that amazon was the first to do so
To all the people in the replies of this comment pointing out how May is already very well-off and he simply didn’t need the money the show was giving him: not to be disrespectful, but I’m just saying I don’t think that really matters. He was, and is, a true friend to the greatest extent he can be. There’s no reason to point out that he’s wealthy. It doesn’t make a difference.
To be fair the press asked the right questions and didn't try to make him say something controversial. I know some newspapers which would do exactly that.
Surprised the answers were to the point really, could have added some classic May tangents in there and gone off topic to throw them but yeah. May did mention he had to list a Fearrari on ebay so whatya do?
It is quite sad to see him stand up for someone that has a reputation of treating staff members like slaves with literally no value. Because that is what Clarkson is.
@@GrilladKirbyyou obviously dont know much about jeremy and his relationship with the producers + the bbc. Instead of assuming stupid things do research instead of antagonising a guy who has produced entertainment for 20+ years and is burnt out, tired, angry and struggling as a whole.
the lads and the mad idea of the producers is just unbelievably perfect. my favorite series, no doubt. it's unfortunate they can't continue the series together
"Much as I think he's a knob, I quite like working with Jeremy." I've been friends with the same 2 guys for 16 years. This statement is what true friendship is lol
I envy your friendships. As a life long loner with only a few acquaintances at an arms length, I've come to realize I've missed out. No one having my back, and to some extend me not having anyones back, kind of make me the first to fall in all relevant situations. At my previous job everyone threw me under the bus as the big bad wolf, which ended with me losing my job in the end. Everyone else there had an ally or more except me, so no one stepped forward to clear my name. Bs like that reassured me people are fake trash, but their not. My department boss was the guilty one, btw. He threw a big stack of defect, but not worthless, laptops in the garbage. He later lost his job as well. He was the closest co-worker I had while I was there.
Sonidoge Yes. What appear to be very honest, genuine responses at a time when he presumably had no idea what his own future now held. If so, that’s real integrity.
“As much as I think he’s a knob, I quite like working with Jeremy” I just love how he manages to insult Jeremy while also displaying how much their friendship means to him. That might be the most powerful thing May has ever said. That is real true friendship. He knew from the very moment he found out Jeremy was fired that there was no way in hell he was staying without jezza. He knew Richard felt the same way because not once did he mention Hammond.
@@mariolisa2832 even though Hammond's had a very successful career in his own right? Fair enough Jeremy has had the "biggest" career, but James and Richard aren't very far behind.
@@mariolisa2832 more like he gave Hammond his own chance to weigh in on his own terms with the bit "To be clear amidst all this talk of us 'quitting' or not: there's nothing for me to 'quit'. Not about to quit my mates anyway."
The BBC’s hands were tied though, Clarkson assaulted a member of staff they couldn’t have kept him on. I’m sure the BBC would love to still have them all presenting Top Gear but they had no choice it wasn’t like “haha we’ve fired Clarkson that’s the end of him of course the other 2 will stay and Top Gear will be better than ever!” They probably anticipated that the Hammond & May would leave and it wouldn’t take a genius to realise that they’d probably get a great deal elsewhere (Amazon).
Spoken like a true friend, well said James, this reporter tried his best to get James to back stab Jeza and James deff would not, so welldone James a true friend until the end. No wonder Britain loves James May so much, a lovely gentle man. :-) your welcome.
Well yeah... In front of camera James and Jeremy would be like Tom and Jerry almost every single minute, and Hammond would be their mediator, most of the time it was like that. At least their confrontation was opened and cleared ASAP. But I believe that is a part of their scenes.
Pretty sure they've repeatedly said that they don't hang out, they're only together when they're working and Jeremy doesn't want the other 2 on his farm, while May doesn't want those 2 in his pub. They're loyal, they know good television, but not so sure about the "friends" tag.
@@KoinzellGaming More like they are sick of seeing each other everyday. They are definitely friends or else they wouldn't have had so much fun for 20 + years
They are defo friends as Jeremy has spoke in a few of the old specials about how he appreciates seeing the amazing sights that they get to see in their supercars with two of his ‘best mates’.
Oscar Same Wow I guess this is our celeb culture gone mad. Where losers are allowed to do whatever they want as long as they are white and popular. I wonder what the reaction would have been if he was part of yewtree......
Ian Ashton In the end, the BBC is a business. Top Gear is one of their biggest products. There is no way the show will survive without Clarkson, and possibly without May. The BBC will be losing at least a quarter of their revenue. All they've done is fire at Clarkson, and hit themselves.
"We are very much a package" even minutes after finding out Jezzy had finally snapped he knew that Top Gear was over, these guys had definitely discussed the possibility of something like this happening.
Yeah just like every other video that’s been suggested to everyone in the past month 🤣👌 there’s no possible way to be suggested a video under any other circumstance right now, is there?

O Kane Not really. This was the only really big problem that the BBC had no hand in. Think about it, all of the "scandals" where Jeremy got caught saying something he shouldn't have, were signed off by the BBC producers, editors, etc. They don't broadcast live. This is the only thing where he did something by himself that was absolutely his own doing. As for how they could've handled it? They could have said, we will continue the show for the fans, but your pay will be docked X amount or something along those lines. The BBC could've handled this better but they didn't ESPECIALLY since they've cancelled the rest of the season. Just finish it out and don't piss off your fans.
O Kane Whoever fault is, the show itself have no life without Clarkson, neither May and Hammond. He did his actions, he's receiving what he wanted but the last words of May on this video is quite important to BBC that he would not be in a show without Clarkson. Bottom line, everybody may have shot at their feet there, but having lost everything with the show, Clarkson, May and Hammond have their hands on the knife, not the knife up on their necks. BBC is fucked up with this.
Anel Olivardia I'm angry with Jeremy for his role in ending James May's career as a Top Gear presenter. I don't care about Richard Hammond. I love May and his weird ways!
This is all a bit ridiculous. Yes it was all Jeremy's fault, but, he did report himself afterwards and apologize. Why did the BBC have to put their big heads in this? They made it a bigger problem then it should've been.
Trust me, any normal person who punched a colleague would get the same. Especially since he had already gotten a final warning. And a final warning is meaningless if they don't follow through with it.
Waldo and the previous warnings were due to the BBC being PC pussies. So basicly this was the first instance where he deserved a warning and punishment...
TerrySiler If everybody took the refusal to pay stance then would they take us all to court, for an effective tax on a service many of us watch BBC shows online where we don't have to be licensed anyway
DJ Villan it's ashame we can't just "Not" have a licence. alot of people don't even like the bbc anyway but are forced to pay a licence to view OTHER channels..
I have to say, irrelevant to the rest of proceedings, James comes across very well in this interview and handles himself calmly considering there are strangers on his door step. He also gave very good answers in my opinion.
JACKofalltrades Morris Marina = Black Sheep of an overwise reasonable line of cars (one that was sub-par even for the late 1970's, poorly built, unreliable & slow) Morris after all gave the world the original Mini ~_^
Who me?, sorry lad but i wouldn't be caught dead in a Marina, an insult to a good Marque. One that i'm delighted to report is Rarer in my Hometown than the Triumph TR7 (in fact there's three times more TR7's than Marina's, something few 1970's commenters would ever have guessed given that car's problems, of which it had many XD)
These 3 are really good friends, he didn't mention anything negative about his colleague. Even though Clarkson had a massive ego, i'd hate to see him go
***** True, but the fact that the TV-viewing public, which are millions strong, have to miss out on Top Gear now is, I believe, roughly equivalent in scope to one man getting 500 years in prison.
***** Responsibility has nothing to do with it. Punching someone is assault and I don't know any corporation where assault on a co-worker is not grounds for immediate firing.
No one watches the new Top Gear, while May, Jezza, and Hamster are still driving cars to strange places and being watched by millions. The BBC chose poorly.
Those guys were a great part of my childhood. It’s sad to see they had to deal with this. True comedians and great entertainers. Wish the best for them.
Judge Mollie just about all od the major broadcasters have already said they will not work with him. That includes sky, itv, channel 4 and netflix. Another show may pick him up but it wouldn't be top gear.
Joe Anthing If the BBC refuse to allow Sky or ITV to buy the rights to Top Gear, the three of them will just start another motoring show under a different name. I don't think it's all over.
The 3 of them are a perfect Trio. They could do a show about the mating habits of jellyfish and it would be entertaining. The chemistry is PERFECT!!! Beyond that, just the mere fact that within mere minutes of finding out, James was pretty adament about all or nothing shows 2 things: 1. He is a true friend. 2. He realized that the 3 of them could do a show about the mating habits of jellyfish and they would be entertaining and they would find a gig.

The fact that we live in a world now where a man publicly standing by his friend (regardless of what that friend just did) seems incredibly rare, is a sad indictment of just how selfishly inauthentic our rapidly eroding society is.

Yeah mate, he was a columnist before top gear, he wasn’t found on the side of the road nor will he ever end up there.
realistically they were very likely to get a new contract with someone else when the new top gear airs and the views dropped it just so happened that amazon was the first to do so

To be fair the press asked the right questions and didn't try to make him say something controversial. I know some newspapers which would do exactly that.

T'noight,
I test the T-34,
Hammond gets a free Trip to Germany,
And James is Conscripted into the RAF.
All of that and more, on King's Gear.
The BBC lost a lot of viewers when they fired Clarkson, many Top Gear viewers now watch TGT
A recent survey stated that 89% of people prefer The grand tour over the New top gear
The Eternal Knight not surprising tbh
@Sir Soy Gato the Second It's a study! U not believe studies, u anti-science pos?!? 😂😂😂
*98%
Thank u , i never knew this trio had a new series, i will watch soon inshallah , seriously bro thank u now i can enjoy a good car series again
Good on James, glad to hear it. Regardless of whether or not what Jeremy did was wrong or not, the BBC has really shot themselves in the foot here.
Clarkson shot his own foot. It left the BBC no option than the refusal to renew his contract. The whole mess is Clarkson's fault. No one else's.
Just finish it out and don't piss off your fans.
i think i mightve been more like they shot their legs off with a tank not just shooting their foot
This man could solve Brexit
Too bad he's off listing the eBay for his ferarri
Yeah by putting everyone in parliament to sleep talking about the combustion temperature of the fuel used by early model BF-109s
Hammond solved it. If we all check under our car seats and between the seat and handbrakes, we'll all find enough change to pay for brexit ourselves.
@@jameson1239 I mean that's the right way to talk with germans, isn't it?
This man is one of the greatest and nicest human beings left on this planet, a true loyal friend
The word knob really isn't used as much as it should be!
I think James May is probably one of few people who can use the word knob without actually sounding like a knob.
*_tips_* if u come to the UK m'lady we can go for a knobbing fest!
Sid B Oh I bet it isn't :P
Sid B Sure thing buddy xD
Or the other May favourite... COCK!
Waldo
and the previous warnings were due to the BBC being PC pussies. So basicly this was the first instance where he deserved a warning and punishment...
If it would have happened in USA they would probably send him to Anger Management classes
Jay K It's big business, of course it's going to be PC
DiamorphineDeath
Clarkson and Top Gear have been popular around the world without the PC police
“Does that mean he’s not coming back then?”
"Well James.... he got angry when his food was cold, then lost it and clocked a producer. So it is a no, he's not coming back."
Stay tunes. The story is developing.
"...as much as I think he's a knob, I quite like working with Jeremy - James May
"i have to write an ebay listing for my Ferrari"
Baller
Time to cancel the license.
leounn Yes! That was my reaction haha
TerrySiler If everybody took the refusal to pay stance then would they take us all to court, for an effective tax on a service many of us watch BBC shows online where we don't have to be licensed anyway
Damn straight. Only bloody thing I paid it for.
DJ Villan it's ashame we can't just "Not" have a licence. alot of people don't even like the bbc anyway but are forced to pay a licence to view OTHER channels..
***** That's pretty off topic.
I have to say, irrelevant to the rest of proceedings, James comes across very well in this interview and handles himself calmly considering there are strangers on his door step. He also gave very good answers in my opinion.
I come back to this video to remind myself what real friendship is all about.
His last sentence, in Germany we call such a person "Ehrenmann" = "upmost honorable man"
Absolute Legende der Typ
is it true that in Germany journalists are not allowed to harass people like this ?
@@tonybuckley6413
It never happened to me, so may be ;-)
@Andreas Schmitt ..something to do with privacy laws I think , the way it should be anyway . Journalists they're like hyenas on a hunt
We all think James is the soft one but what he says at the end of this interview just says everything about him as a friend and as a colleague!!
If interviews turned out like this more often, the world would be a better place
I never knew May and Hammond were focused on leaving Top Gear the day Clarkson got fired. They essentially announced their resignation that same day.
They were not. All contracts were coming to an end and they chose not to do Top Gear without Jeremy.
The Morris Marina owner's club has clearly orchestrated this entire conspiracy!
Damn those Morris drivers! I always knew those cars had a secret.
What about the caravan enthusiast Club? joint conspiracy perhaps?
JACKofalltrades Morris Marina = Black Sheep of an overwise reasonable line of cars (one that was sub-par even for the late 1970's, poorly built, unreliable & slow)
Morris after all gave the world the original Mini ~_^
Who me?, sorry lad but i wouldn't be caught dead in a Marina, an insult to a good Marque.
One that i'm delighted to report is Rarer in my Hometown than the Triumph TR7
(in fact there's three times more TR7's than Marina's, something few 1970's commenters would ever have guessed given that car's problems, of which it had many XD)
Aleksandar M In total collaboration with the caravan owners association of Great Britain..
I can't believe he died, rip in peace. :(
***** hes not dead bro
Robert, he just got fired, that's all man. No tears, just walruses :)
Wtf?
Good riddance
it's so sad I know... ;_; ripip
These 3 are really good friends, he didn't mention anything negative about his colleague. Even though Clarkson had a massive ego, i'd hate to see him go
with his ego those two they still stick around that call true friends they stick like a brothers.
Kalara McGary Of course Bro's before hoe's... or in this case the media!
He didn’t have an ego in a narsissistic way though, but in a charismatic way, it’s very much part of him and his character, and thank god for that
I love how his immediate response after knowing for only a few minutes was that without Jeremy the other two wouldn’t do it
Everyone needs an honest and loyal friend like May
Aww that last line ! :( I miss Clarkson.. The show is funnier and better with him.. I don't care if he killed a guy. I want him back!!!!
Kendrick Taylor no he didn't..but I'm saying.. Like if he did.. I still would support him 😂
He called him a knob because that’s what true friends do. Call each other names
HE KILLED A GUY?????
@@maameopong no
Then watch him on grand tour
James hinting they are all leaving. woo Lets hope the three stay together and move to a differnt channel and call it not so top gear or somthing.
AGREE
XdanielZ99 I hope so but lets face it these guys are almost at their expiry date..It would be a shame if they retired now.
NETFLIX
I'm wondering what kind of studio they could have then, would they be able to use the track still and so on.
GodKing804 Seriously.. Netflix should be scrambling right now to get a deal figured out.
James May is always a class act. Never have I ever seen him respond to a situation in any other manner!!
I wonder how the Stig will React to all this... Some say he's totally in the dark about the whole situation.
He has actually spoken out in support of Clarkson or at least the old Stig is: th-cam.com/video/5xRBPVbjPQk/w-d-xo.html
There were several stigs, one of them hated Clarkson.
Some say the Stig punched the steak...
Some say the stig is the one who got hit
Some say the Stig was underneath the desk and filming Jeremy do it.
One last question James “Does that mean he is not coming on then”
James is like “ nah it’s a package deal.”
Me and my family were kinda in silent agreement not to watch the new Top Gear with the new presenters!
@@beckyboulton4390 matt leblanc was pretty good
“As much as I think he’s a knob, I quite like working with Jeremy”
Sums up their trio perfectly
Punching a co-worker in the mouth is not 'a minor matter easily worked out'. It is matter for the police.
JRTomlinAuthor the fracas was over hot food. THAT is a minor matter that should be easily worked out.
I think he meant the minor matter could have been easily worked out before he hit him
***** True, but the fact that the TV-viewing public, which are millions strong, have to miss out on Top Gear now is, I believe, roughly equivalent in scope to one man getting 500 years in prison.
Yes, but he was TV producer. That doesn't count.
***** Responsibility has nothing to do with it. Punching someone is assault and I don't know any corporation where assault on a co-worker is not grounds for immediate firing.
5 years ago ? Its like it was a year ago. Time is flying :(
Prawda
“As much as I think he’s a knob, I quite like working with Jeremy” Perfectly put May.
"Well apparently they shot him" his humor and his seriousness aswell as the fact he wasn't gonna throw Jeremy under
Nice to see some loyalty.
Man I miss the OG top gear so much. The fact that BBC thought they could replace those three is hilarious
BBC wazz smoking crack thinking we will love the new top gear
No one watches the new Top Gear, while May, Jezza, and Hamster are still driving cars to strange places and being watched by millions. The BBC chose poorly.
That last statement shows what a true friend is right there. May is a solid guy
“Much as I think he’s a knob, I quite like working with Jeremy.”
Those words had me choked up.
“Much as I think he’s a knob, I quite like working with Jeremy”
I’m dead 😂
No one : Literally no one: TH-cam: recommended this to me 5 years later

"as much as I think he's a knob
I quite like working with Jeremy"
That
That is true friendship. Willing to quit your job for a friendship
Those guys were a great part of my childhood. It’s sad to see they had to deal with this. True comedians and great entertainers. Wish the best for them.
The real tragedy here is that finger-painted fedora.
Lol I thought nobody had mentioned the hat. It's a Trilby not a fedora. A fedora is the type of hat Indiana Jones wore.
I hope they move to Sky and start a new, even better show with a bigger budget. Now there's nothing good to watch on BBC.
No other channel are taking them. Top gear will try to continue on BBC.
Joe Anthing another show is going to pick him up real fast
Judge Mollie just about all od the major broadcasters have already said they will not work with him. That includes sky, itv, channel 4 and netflix. Another show may pick him up but it wouldn't be top gear.
Joe Anthing yea ik it wont be top gear but im sure that show whatever show he gets picked up for will be amazing lol
Joe Anthing If the BBC refuse to allow Sky or ITV to buy the rights to Top Gear, the three of them will just start another motoring show under a different name. I don't think it's all over.
"Much as I think he's a knob. I quite like working with Jeremy." sums up their dynamic perfectly.
that last sentence actually still brings a tear to my eye. His answers were and are perfect and incredibly quick, shows how clever he actually is
Love James May at the end "As much as I think he's a knob, I'd quite like working with Jeremy". That's friendship.
New top gear try to pull off same comedy as clarkson may and Hammond and its just cringe worthy.
It’s because it doesnt feel natural as they were all mates and the newer ones don’t really seem like mates
This just goes to show why James May is one of the best tv presenters.
The 3 of them are a perfect Trio. They could do a show about the mating habits of jellyfish and it would be entertaining.
The chemistry is PERFECT!!!
Beyond that, just the mere fact that within mere minutes of finding out, James was pretty adament about all or nothing shows 2 things:
1. He is a true friend.
2. He realized that the 3 of them could do a show about the mating habits of jellyfish and they would be entertaining and they would find a gig.
Top gear has sucked ever since.
first he was all like .... H982 FKL
but then he was like .... JCLK P45
ein It actually is a very good one. Google the top gear argentina license plate saga and then read it again. :)
ein it was for all of us who dont have sticks up our asses, cheer man
***** 1982 Falkland war.. H982 FKL, tho clever and i might have done the same, hes just a cockmaster.. from staging rock fights with nations he hates, to his constant blame on the US for the UKs loss of domination after WWII, hes a man with menopause.. His constant US hate only shows his insecurities.
ein Get a life.
ein This guy probably doesn't even know what a p45 is
We come as a package. Now thats Loyalty
The fact that we live in a world now where a man publicly standing by his friend (regardless of what that friend just did) seems incredibly rare, is a sad indictment of just how selfishly inauthentic our rapidly eroding society is.
Well said!
