I'm 36 I saw this movie yesterday in theaters I was the only one innthe theaters who wasn't a senior citizen lol I thought it was adorable how so many elderly couples came to see this movie and you can hear them talk to each other about it. What I loved about this movie is that it never really straight up tells you what year it is, based on the furniture, clothing, vehicles in the yard, and what's going on you can pretty much pick up like ok we in the 1900s, 1930s, 1950s, 1980s, 2000s which which I absolutely loved. This is one of my favorite movies of the year it's such a beautiful movie about life.
They do tell you that it's 2003 during the New Years scene. And the news of Pearl Harbor on the radio indicates that it's 1941 (the inventor also predicts 1942 will be a good year). But other than that, yeah, it's pretty vague.
Answer to the last question is Tron Legacy, generic hero story but the way the world is presented and how the sound track enhances it makes the movie feel so unique.
And that was the reason why it "bombed". I really liked the movie, and also enjoyed another Disney release that "bombed", "John Carter". Both movies were released during the phase 1 of the MCU, and while the not original MCU movies were braking bank, the "original" (not so original, but less known to the global audience) stuff didn't deliver the expected return. And that's the problem with movies these days. Movie studios are now risk averse Wall Street traded companies, that burn millions of dollars, expecting huge returns. And that is ruining the industry. Tron Legacy made 400M, John Carter 285M. These shouldn't be considered "bombs", that's still a lot of money. Sorry about the rant...
Would honestly love to see another studio give that franchise a shot. Maybe Miramax or Legendary? But keep disney/snyder/amazon 10 trillion leagues from that project please!
Top Gun: Maverick (same director, I believe) is kind of the same thing. Very simple premise we've seen before, but the way it's filmed and what they did with the planes and the characters made it feel very fresh.
1917. Take away the “whole movie is one continuous shot” gimmick, and it’s just another war movie. But the execution made it truly unique and engaging, you felt like you were right there with the soldiers.
That aspect resonated with me as well. My wife and I spoke about this on the way home from the theater. She said that each couple had features of their predecessors in that sense of giving up passion for what seems like responsibility. Thankfully we have done so much and both own our own businesses and have travelled the world together. But we both picked up on the fact that the inventor and the pilot, were the only ones who kept pushing for their dreams. I just saw the movie tonight. And now I’m analyzing some of these deeper messages.
My wife and I were literally speechless. We have been married 33 years and our last child/young adult just moved out. We could see ourselves and our season of life when the movie reached that era. This movie is deep and powerful and will help married couples especially bring what matters back into focus. Best movie we have seen this year. Very real.

Cyrano de Bergerac, made in 1950, with an Oscar winning performance by José Ferrer. I saw this as a teen in the late 80s. It’s been my favorite film, book, and play ever since. The dialogue is amazing. There’s great humor in the film. Describing ass kissing social climbers, Cyrano says he notes how they go about making friends, the way a dog makes friends. There’s drama. Oh, I love the play comment, Jeremy. That's a fascinating observation. .... but I gotta admit, I went to the Heretic press screening instead of Here (and loved it! Go see Heretic!!! Yay!) 💥
A movie I always wish more people saw and talked about is The Vanishing of Sidney Hall. On surface level it's a pretty standard story on the potential dangers of rising in fame at a young age. But what makes it stand out is how it is not linear and keeps jumping around 3 different times in Sidney's life and becomes like an unconventional mystery thriller as we discover the life choices and events that got him to where he is. And Logan Lerman plays the 3 different ages fantastically! I love this movie!
I was glad how you brought it up this movie was in fact based on a graphic novel. I actually read it a year ago I think and while it was good I didn’t see the need for a movie adaption.
Videos like this is why watch this channel. I had not heard of this movie at all. I would have never seen this gem is Jeremy had not reviewed it. Thank you Jeremy
Idk how I knew nothing about this movie but I want to go see it. Tom Hanks and Robin Wright are so great together, it'll be nice to see them in a movie again.
It's interesting because time doesn't really exist. It's simple an aggregate of memories and records that tell us about the past but in itself we are yet to reconcile the plank time with the relativistic aspect that makes us feel we are ...here.
This movie feels like an indie auteur movie made with a highly decorated all-star filmmaker bringing a unique vision to life with all the benefit of their experience. I honestly think that's what it is, even though I'll admit that I haven't seen the film. It has that feel of an experiment, something that the director doesn't know if it'll work, but is so confident in their abilities and their vision that they MADE it work. Also? The meteor that killed the dinosaurs struck the Yukatan Peninsula, yeah, but it raised so much dust and debris and broke up enough in the atmosphere that it's not like it's the only thing that hit the earth. Give it a few degrees of give and some of the debris that came off that asteroid would have drifted northward and hit the east coast of the USA. We don't really know, but I find it perfectly fine, especially since if we saw the actual exact asteroid? The screen would've just been a bright white flash for several seconds as the energy dispersed into the environment, followed by a wave of brown dust and earth as the ground rippled like a wave. We clearly didn't see the actual asteroid, just some debris, in this movie. HOWEVER, this is clearly dramatic license anyway, because the asteroid that killed the dinos would've streaked by so fast that we'd never be able to see it. We'd just see a bright flash and a line in the sky as it passed overhead, then the boom in the distance and then another flash of light. So I'm not upset at all by this, it's just kinda fun.
One of my college classmates did a play similar to this called Dinner where it showed a couple’s first date and depicts their lives until they grow old. It all takes place at a dinner table and it was really interesting
Del Toro’s Pinocchio. There’s been many so many adaptations of this story, two other ones in that same year funny enough, yet Del Toro’s excellent execution of it stood out and deservedly took home the Oscar for it!
I didn’t dislike this movie, but I thought it was pretty shallow. Enjoyable in the moment, but I don’t think I’ll remember much about it in a week. My answer to your question in Boyhood
the camera is stationary in reference to the axis of rotation for the earth so in the prehistoric shot the land is different but the camera doesn't move so the Yucatan peninsula as you say it shifts with the plates as they move. in other words think of the camera being locked to a longitude and latitude vs locked to a spot on the ground
I just saw the movie and didn’t watch or read any reviews prior because I didn’t want to spoil anything. It was about 20ish minutes in I realized that it was all going to take place entirely in the same room with the same static camera angle. I was a little disappointed but decided it was definitely one of the most unique movies and the way the boxes became like “windows” into the past or future was interesting. I’m 45 and my father passed last year, my oldest child is a freshman in college this year and my wife and I just celebrated 22 years of marriage. So milestones are a big thing right now in my life. It’s worth watching but can wait until after the theater run, watching at home would be just fine. It’s sad, I got teary eyed at parts for sure. The concept is interesting but it’s also quite slow and quiet. The whole time I could hear loud noises coming from surrounding theaters. Other Zemeckis movies I’ve watched numerous times, this one I do not feel like I’ll watch again.
Honestly i think the movie didnt deliver at the build-ups... You know the Father character is gonna die... Why show a transition? Show us him passing away in the arms of Tom Hanks... (Cauz i believe His character had the most screen time)... You didnt show Vanessa after she became a Lawyer... Why? Would she return just once for old time sakes? I guess it meant to show children move on and never come back... There was the build up of Divorce... Well it didnt feel like one because i guess both the character didnt regret it... The Alzheimer's part of Robin Wright character was established but it could have been played way better... Tom Hanks. Honestly a big fan of him but his character felt lika Flat arc. You got a simple Sub-Urban dad as your Lead character... Atleast add Human struggles like Financial issues, rough dad issues, daughter out of hand issues, wife not listening issues, not able to do his dream job of becoming an Artist leading to low self esteem issues... It should have dealt more... And i think Tom Hanks character could have been played solo more than a Couple... If you wanted to play the ending parts of story lika solo divorced man. They should have taken this route because It would make it more fun... And wanted to feel for him... There isnt a scene of crying of Tom Hanks... Which makes it feel like a void honestly... You got a divorce conversation... Make it nasty... Make it serious... I want to be indulged... I felt really bad the way they just didnt give a homage to The Father character dying... It was a Lost opportunity...
Really can't understand all the negative reviews. Sure the de-aging was a little weird at times and it was a bit schmaltzy, but it was a really beautiful, interesting and innovative movie. I loved it

thanks for giving this movie a fair and honest review and not just jumping on the hate-bandwagon. it's a beautiful film that, at the very least, deserves much credit for its risk-taking concept and production value. the acting and themes were truthful and sincere
I actually think Godzilla vs Kong did this well. I know most think of it was just dumb fun. And while the story or script wasn’t exactly anything original, I just loved how the film went on. I actually got really invested in the whole story. With the whole Hollow Earth and the Apex investigation. Plus the fights were incredible!
"Arsenic and Old Lace" did the static setup really well, but in their case it wasn't completely static--Mortimer does go into the kitchen once early in the movie, and the characters go outside sometimes. Other than that, about three-quarters of the action takes place in the living room.
I know what you mean about houses being a character in the story too. I feel like Haunting of Hill House really nailed that. There are several other examples, of course, but I feel like every good haunted house movie has the house as a character as well. I was interested to see this movie and am now even more intrigued. I'll have to go check this out.
The Haunting of Hill House, the Netflix miniseries, is one of the best TV shows ever made, and one of the best takes of a ‘haunted’ house in audio/visual media.
In a sort of answer to your question - I absolutely love the movie "American Pop". It is an animated movie that follows a single family with a focus on the changing nature of music and how the music reflects the time. It's a fantastic movie.
I watched this movie today and automatically I think the movie would've been better if it was shown in chronological order instead of frequently jumping timeline. It really annoyed me. I also didn't like the squares showing up on the screen and partially changing certain parts of the timeline. It was a nice film but a bit forgettable in my opinion.
Lmao that strolling into a movie theater half an hour late is literally what me and my movie buddy do now. Always walk in after the amc promo right before the movie starts
PACIFIC RIM. idk what it is but the story is pretty basic, characters are pretty basic, but how the movies is executed and how everything plays out is just so well done. I still get giddy every time i watch it
I just got back from seeing the movie and, despite what critics say, it was good to me. Sure, there was schmaltz in places and the Memento-esque pacing could get annoying in places, but I love the style.
4:53 I actually do think about this. In particular with the house my grandparents lived in. I spent all my summers there with them when I was growing up. It's a very special house to me. My grandmother passed away peacefully in that home in 1995. I really want to see this movie because I do wonder about these things. For that reason, I think I will like this movie despite all the negative reviews it's getting.
The movie reminded me of 'Cloud Atlas', which funny enough also starred Tom Hanks. But unlike that movie, the stories in 'Here' although interesting, don't seem to interconnect as well, and I really wished they did a better job at that.
I enjoyed this very much. It kinda reminded me of my family. I was born in my home now and my entire family is gone now. And its just me. I can relate with a lot of this story, family wise. Thumbs up for me.
La La Land is one I can think of. The story itself is pretty generic but the execution is so well done that it doesn’t even matter. The musical aspect of is what makes it so unique and Damien Chazelle does a great job bringing it to life.
It said at the end Based on a Graphic Novel. I thought that sort of explained all the panels within panels. I guess the title “Life” was taken as “Here” is a weak title. I liked all the cars going by that helped tell you what year we are in.
Breaks my heart that this review makes no mention of the fact this is based on a graphic novel. (No fault to Jeremy as the marketing made no reference to this.) But man, do yourself a favor and read it - I found it emotion, profound, and really shows the strengths of the medium.
I think they stole the premise of this movie from "A Ghost Story", if you watched it, you would recall that the "ghost" gets stuck in the house where he lived when he died and he is vaulted in the past and then to the future of people living in that house or on the property of the house. While the overall story is a bit different, the premise is oddly similar.
The premise of this movie reminds me of a Nobel Prize winning novel, The Bridge on the Drina, where the main character of the book is actually the bridge, witnessing, through time, the fates of people living near by. I wonder if Zemeckis read the book and got inspired 😊
02:53 NAH, FOR REAL 💯🙄 I went to see Deadpool & Wolverine opening weekend, I was running late to the theater and the snack line was MASSIVE but I really wanted popcorn so I waited 20+ minutes for it 🙄 Speedwalkin to my seat, now 35 minutes after my showtime, and the previews were STILL going 🤦♂ Worth the wait tho, most fun I've had at the movies in years!
My answer to your ending question is I Saw the Devil. Just another revenge film plot yet it's so intense & different for the fact the killer gets caught early only to get re-released by the anti hero again all so he's recaught.

Oh, I love the play comment, Jeremy. That's a fascinating observation. .... but I gotta admit, I went to the Heretic press screening instead of Here (and loved it! Go see Heretic!!! Yay!) 💥
Another great review Jeremy ❤
I loved the graphic novel and immediately wondered if they were connected. But I agree that it didn't need a movie
Yes.
You haven't seen it?? Then I suggest you zip it!!!!!!
“Searching” with John cho was great! I was shocked at how well the movie got me zoned in and emotionally invested
One of those movies I know won’t do well financially but man is it touching and definitely leave the theater more inspired to reach my full potential
One of my college classmates did a play similar to this called Dinner where it showed a couple’s first date and depicts their lives until they grow old. It all takes place at a dinner table and it was really interesting
Wow, that's so great
Del Toro’s Pinocchio. There’s been many so many adaptations of this story, two other ones in that same year funny enough, yet Del Toro’s excellent execution of it stood out and deservedly took home the Oscar for it!
Based on your description alone, this reminds me a lot of A GHOST STORY.
Which I really liked. And I could completely understand if others hated it.
Dont know what some of the critics were watching but i loved this movie.
Looking forward to your review of Conclave.
Yeah, that's one I think Jeremy would like
I didn’t dislike this movie, but I thought it was pretty shallow. Enjoyable in the moment, but I don’t think I’ll remember much about it in a week.
My answer to your question in Boyhood
Agreed! The movie was “alright”…a bit of a let down. I was really expecting something spectacular based on the concept of the ‘stationary camera’
Jeremy just got me intrigued... I'm gonna watch
Makes me excited to see this. Zemeckis experimented with one man on an island for 2 hours - and no music until the end.
Promps to the cameraman who was filming that shot since the dinosaurs died. Now that's commitment.
the camera is stationary in reference to the axis of rotation for the earth so in the prehistoric shot the land is different but the camera doesn't move so the Yucatan peninsula as you say it shifts with the plates as they move. in other words think of the camera being locked to a longitude and latitude vs locked to a spot on the ground
speaking of places that seem to take a role in a movie Wind river was that to me in every single scene you feel the presence of the town
I absolutely loved Wind River
They should have taken this route because
It would make it more fun...
I loved it
2:54 I literally showed up half an hour late stressing that I would miss the first couple of minutes and I had enough time to buy popcorn and use the bathroom 😂
what binds us is both the ups and downs. if you're focused on just the downs, look in a different direction every now and then. might enjoy what you see
Yes.
thanks for giving this movie a fair and honest review and not just jumping on the hate-bandwagon. it's a beautiful film that, at the very least, deserves much credit for its risk-taking concept and production value. the acting and themes were truthful and sincere
Thank you for not spoiling the ending, it was very moving. 😂
When the credits rolled I saw someone literally named “Jeremy Johns” working on it and I knew right away what I had to do after that.
@@ajpend agree 100%. It's a show that I can watch over and over again because it's just that good. And that atmosphere of the house never gets old. :)
I just love hearing to you! U feel so genuine, passionate and for a lack of better word, happy
In a sort of answer to your question - I absolutely love the movie "American Pop". It is an animated movie that follows a single family with a focus on the changing nature of music and how the music reflects the time. It's a fantastic movie.
The reviews have been SAVAGE. Tearing it apart
It’s a sign of the times (the negativity). The movie was good.
Momento, my introduction to Nolan films. I love how the time-line is broken up, but it feels like the story is told in the correct order
‘So when you think about it, there is great significance to the passage of time’
Love your reviews! They're very, very helpful. You have a real gift.
The Gentleman - like many other action movies we've seen but executed perfectly and feels unique.
I don't even care about this movie. I'm just a fan of Jeremy 😅
💯
Agreed
Lmao that strolling into a movie theater half an hour late is literally what me and my movie buddy do now. Always walk in after the amc promo right before the movie starts
Tom Hanks says this will be in theaters for a year before coming to streaming. I'd say the 5 million dollar opening weekend says differently. :)
PACIFIC RIM. idk what it is but the story is pretty basic, characters are pretty basic, but how the movies is executed and how everything plays out is just so well done. I still get giddy every time i watch it
I’m to the point where even when I know I’m not going to watch a movie I still click to here Jeremy talk about it 🤷🏾♂️🤣🤣
I just got back from seeing the movie and, despite what critics say, it was good to me. Sure, there was schmaltz in places and the Memento-esque pacing could get annoying in places, but I love the style.
Tom Hanks is my favorite actor. Hands down
You will change your mind in time...
Epstein liked him too
Great review bro
4:53 I actually do think about this. In particular with the house my grandparents lived in. I spent all my summers there with them when I was growing up. It's a very special house to me. My grandmother passed away peacefully in that home in 1995. I really want to see this movie because I do wonder about these things. For that reason, I think I will like this movie despite all the negative reviews it's getting.
Your hair! 😍😍😍
Jeremy is a professional film editor at this point with how much he talks about cutting the run time in every review 😂
The movie reminded me of 'Cloud Atlas', which funny enough also starred Tom Hanks. But unlike that movie, the stories in 'Here' although interesting, don't seem to interconnect as well, and I really wished they did a better job at that.
There is an animated shortfilm called Resilience that does a similar gimmick in a very fun (and short) way. I think it was a cal arts student short.
We are *HERE* for you Jeremy ❤
I enjoyed this very much. It kinda reminded me of my family. I was born in my home now and my entire family is gone now. And its just me. I can relate with a lot of this story, family wise. Thumbs up for me.
Who does all the maintenance of your home. A house that old.
@ I do it all unless it’s out of my wheelhouse
Bring back the hour and a half blockbuster!! It wasn’t bad, not sure if it’ll be something I’d watch again but I enjoyed it.
La La Land is one I can think of. The story itself is pretty generic but the execution is so well done that it doesn’t even matter. The musical aspect of is what makes it so unique and Damien Chazelle does a great job bringing it to life.
The Yucatan peninsula?? Nah bro, it was in Manhattan, if super Mario bros is to be believed. Which, it is 5:10
“We’ll call it the Enterprise.” 💯
Cast Away. That last great film by Robert Zemeckis.
It said at the end Based on a Graphic Novel. I thought that sort of explained all the panels within panels. I guess the title “Life” was taken as “Here” is a weak title. I liked all the cars going by that helped tell you what year we are in.
There was an episode of Supernatural filmed entirely from the perspective of the car, and I thought it was really cool.
What Season was that?
@@DavidMartinez-ce3lp Season 11, Episode 4. The episode is just called "Baby." It's freaking awesome.
@@LadyDragonRain2225 oh, that explains it. Pretty sure I stopped watching by then lol
Jeremy, your hair much like Sam Malone’s, is a majestic.
Also…
5:43 Seymour 💥👊🤚
I watched it in the cinema and it was amazing. Very unique and a moving series of stories.
Haven't seen the movie but regarding the meteor, there are going to be smaller fragments broken from the meteor that could also be very damaging.
My answer to your ending question is I Saw the Devil. Just another revenge film plot yet it's so intense & different for the fact the killer gets caught early only to get re-released by the anti hero again all so he's recaught.
