Regarding interiority, I think a writer has to be a bit of a psychonaut to write anything resembling human truth. It does take a lot of solitude, subjective inquiry, openness, empathy, patience, etc. Really, the way I see it, the faculties a writer has to nurture in himself are 1:1 the ones he then brings out in the reader. The more you hone those faculties, the higher you're lifting the reader.
@greatcoldemptiness In my neck of the woods that kind of thing goes appreciated, especially when it ties back to the foundations of the story and/or is done in the first person. Out of curiosity, how do you approach those deep psychological dives?
And strangely, I find that a writer can't be good unless he reads other good writers, however great is his talent and life experience. At first glance, it seems to be a rather straightforward, common sense observation, but I find that in other mediums, such as film or theatre, there is a decent amount of greats that don't really know other people's work; aren't really into it- Hitchcock, Lynch, Welles have all been known as great directors that don't really care and see, with a few exceptions, what other people make. I don't think there has ever been a great writer that isn't also a reader. Perhaps, there are exceptions, have to be... I think it tells us something about the immense strength of the written word that we seem to be forgetting day by day.
yes the age thing is an aspect for sure, I remember reading Rupi Kaur's first book, and while I can appreciate some of her work, theres also a big 'what can she possibly write about at age 22 to fill a whole book with poems'
"If a jackass looks in, can a philosopher look out?" Haha! I love McCarthy. Thank you for these videos. A bit off topic, but do you believe in copy work? Or rewriting others work to practice writing? Have you practiced this exercise?
I’ve been writing everyday for a few months now. My goal is 600 words a day. I eventually will bring it up I just want to build this into an every day habit. Is 600 words a day a decent goal at least for now? Or should I be upping it already?
I would heavily focus on quality over quantity. But that’s just me personally and I have no context of what you’re shooting for lol. My goal is one good sentence a day. Which essentially just means opening the laptop 7 days a week to take a crack at things.

@@Dino_Medici I see what you’re saying but the reason I’m doing 600 words a day because I feel like it will get me in the habit. I’m all about quality as well. I go through and take out things that I feel need to be taken out. And basically I want to write all different types of stories. How long have you been writing?

Do you think it could be possible to do so without being a psychonaut? Perhaps if they are a deep thinker or are a person who naturally ruminates.

Heavy duty analysis. I'd be interested in hearing your observations on Don Delillo.
This is in-depth and intense.

He's fine pretty good even if you're new to reading. His old stuff blows a lot of modern pulp out of the water
