@@PretendCoding google says Activision owned the IP and with its acquisition, it will be owned by Microsoft. I know there are a few Microsoft owned companies that tried to buy/liscence it from Activision over the years, Obsidian for one.
Video game publishing really is a criminal racket, like book publishing. You pour your heart and soul into a story or a game and the publisher takes all the profit and ends up owning the IP.
I still have the Arcanum booklet, along with the the strategy guide. Wished I had kept the box. It’s part of what motivated me to start collecting strategy guides.
Chad Moore wrote An Unfortunate Affair! It was also available on the Arcanum website, but he's credited as 'Sir Chadwick Moore'. That's obviously a change to give it some Victorian-era flair but I still mentally call him Chadwick. I'm actually quite fond of the short story, and even converted it into a small fancy booklet for private reading. I am absolutely fascinated at that newspaper though - I'm sure it has some unique written material that's never been seen before. I would absolutely love to see scans... I suppose even now, there are still some people hungry for Arcanum, huh?
Same! I was almost yelling at the screen about putting on the cotton gloves before you handle that! It was like in the super old Simpsons episode where they have Radioactive Man #1 and Bart sterilizes the the tweezers in a candle before he turns the page. :D
Arcanum is, to this day, still one of my favorite games of ALL TIME. The story, the voice acting, the lore, the gameplay, even the soundtrack...just an amazingly deep and rich game. Thank you SO MUCH for this game. I had always hoped for a sequel, and heard about the working concept for Journey to the Center of Arcanum, and I still hope that someday this game gets made.
I stil remember the opening movie of the guy in plate mail raising a weird looking pistol, and thinking, whaaa? For sure it was a world no one had seen before.
I managed to obtain a press version of Arcanum back in 2008 and still have it in my collection. Although it looks completely different, I compared it with the final edition and I've released the cut out content as modification 🙂 man, time passes fast
Arcanum was a wonderful game. I was impressed with a mix of machines and magic, and the whole world and story was about it. It had some bugs and maybe balance issues, but it was one of games you remember after years.
The press event took place at the Magic Castle because Arcanum was pure magic! It checks out ;) That box set is priceless! Thank you for showing us! Have a great day :)
Amazing, so much material about Arcanum. The box has a nice art, we see woman there, Raven? Also sadly gun wielding Orc was dropped in future arts/posters, mage and dwarf remained. I would pay money to get one of these newspapers...and of course for remaster/remake!
Trivia and information about things like this is really interesting to hear about! Especially that newspaper seems like such a cool way of introducing the world.
Hi Tim😊, I really enjoyed Arcanum in my childhood with friends. Even after one of two cd discs literally blowed up inside of pc😂 Regarding video about Board games, you mentioned that “ideas” cost nothing without implementation in life. This thought forced me to think a lot and I would like to know your detailed opinion about it😅 thanks for everything ❤❤
It's quite validating and reassuring to hear adults from an earlier generation needing to just disappear and find 20 mins somewhere quiet at social events. Thank you for sharing.
Arcanum is a game I keep returning to, I think I'd struggle to explain why without an hours long ramble. Suffice to say it's a world I'd love to see more of.
Hey Tim people are very interested in video game preservation, especially beta and prerelease content do you think you could scan and upload some of this promotional material? I don't know how much of it is currently documented.
Arcanum is in my personal top 5 games of all time. Not saying it’s perfect, but it IS wonderful and it came out at the perfect time in my life for me to appreciate it. It was my first CRPG and I remember thinking the ad in PC Gamer looked really neat, then putting HOURS into the demo before I eventually got the full game.
Arcanum is one of my favorite RPGs (and favorite games at all). Even a remake of original Arcanum would be an absolutely mind blowing surprise for me (with more or less modern 3d graphics, polished balance/bugs, multiplayer). Would definitely buy it.
I loved Arcanum when I was younger. I remember at the time in the store looking for something that was a bit different and Arcanum was definitely that! There was only one copy in the store and no-one had ever mentioned the game before. Was happy when I got to play it and make a summoner character who was so powerful 🤣.
For a lot of my life it was one of my private "personal pipe-dreams" to somehow eventually present at E3, so it was kind of a bummer when E3 died before I ever got to even go. Hearing you tell these stories about general press events, though, helps a lot with feeling less cut off from those types of dreams -- and, most importantly, I'm willing to bet that I'm not the only one being helped in that kind of way by hearing these stories.
I am sure you get these comments a lot but I just want to say that I absolutely love Arcanum despite its flaws and I play through it every few years. I even liked it so much I ran a tabletop RPG campaign using the Savage Worlds system and my custom rules to introduce the crafting, magic/tech aptitude and even the backgrounds of the game.
Can you talk about game demos? We rarely see them offered these days (probably replaced by betas). The Arcanum demo was one of my favourites ever, so much replayability. It convinced me to buy the game immediately.
I was gonna joke that Sir Chaddwick Moore wrote an unfortunate affair not leonard (i know the name from the loading screen, such great art and feel). As i googled the spelling i found this In fact, your alter ego, Sir Chadwick Moore, was immortalized in one of the loading screens as the author of “An Unfortunate Affair,” a very much real short story that served as a piece of foundational fiction for the game. Can you tell me something about how that story, and the game’s unique world that combines magic and steampunk technology, came to be? CM: That was a really fun and interesting project that I took on soon after joining the team at Troika. We had already done a lot of early world-building, but we needed something to bring all of those great ideas into a more compelling picture of what the world was like. And so “An Unfortunate Affair” was born. It ended up being a lot longer than I’d originally planned So if this is correct chad moore wrote it.
It would not be good if you only spoke about notes. Just talking freely and using notes untop is better. Just talking and having fun. Not a witness on the stand.
We really should get an Arcanum remaster, the story is top tier but the gameplay has "issues". With some proper rebalancing and new graphics it could be the best Crpg ever.
I'd love to hear what you were doing on 9/11 and what your initial reaction was. I'd imagine it being on a workday, you were busy doing something dev related
Arcanum is probably my fav crpg of all time, thank you for making it. I really wish y'all hadn't been hit so hard by all the shitty capitalist concerns that ruins ever work of art.
I hope Arcanum has a future, you guys made a awesome game with a fantastic world!
The IP is owned by EA now, and they probably won't do anything with it. Hopefully an indie dev is passionate about making a spiritual successor

With the success of Baldurs Gate 3 maybe there is hope.
I miss the days games had booklets with content and background information.
I looked at the warcraft 3 booklet until it fell apart.

I don’t mind to admit I am super jealous about that box. Especially the newspaper! Such rich world-building.
Trust me, you're not the only one
Arcanum has a superb world
PLEASE SCAN THE NEWS PAPER IF YOU LEGALLY CAN
Oh my god that newspaper. Tim, I would literally metaphorically kill for a digital version to be available online

That's his next video.
The print newspaper is blowing my mind a bit. I still haven't gotten to go to the Magic Castle. What a great venue choice though!
Thank you for Arcanum, played for 2 years straight back in the day. I have always wondered who Kryggird was...

Well arcanum was technically only half magic lol
That newspaper is so awesome! I wish Arcanum could continue like the Fallout series.

At first I thought that is not Raven. But as i paused and looked closer i think it actually is.
Haha difficult to say i think the woman on the box has green eyes (hard to tell, maybe not) and Raven has blue eyes.
Asked someone else and they think the eyes are green so im in the no Raven camp again
That newspaper is so cool. It's stacked, must've taken ages to write!
