Unique. Special. No one before her. No one since. I saw Liza at the London Palladium in 1978/79. The greatest live performance I have ever seen. And I have seen a lot! I get so irritated how people view Liza now, how underrated she is. But hey, I have my memories!
Oh My God, that is SO sensational! This performance alone puts her at the very top of legendary singers! It really borders on operatic-level emotions and that hauntingly Garland vibrato throbs with emotion. Really really great! Thanks for posting this! Paul Anthony Romero
No it's not a Judy Garland song That's from the original Broadway score for funny girl with Barbra Streisand it was just not used in the film even though Garland did sing it it's on the recording of the Palladium concert with Liza
Hypnotic & stunning performance by Liza show why she is the legendary Liza Minnelli...only Liza could get inside of "The Music That Makes Me Dance" and make it so soulful & this riveting...Bravo Liza!!!
I agree Greg. For example, I am obsessed with her 1987 Carnegie Hall album, her vocals in that period are outstanding and feel frustrated people aren’t exposed to more examples of her at ‘her best’ - because I truly believe her timbre and abilities during the 80s rivalled her mother’s or Barbra’s.
Part of the reason she is the consummate performer is that she makes every song her own. Whether she changes up the melody or the phrasing, she does it her own way and still makes it sound good. She has been performing the song Cabaret since the 60s and has sung it thousands of times. Yet, never the same way twice. There is far too little of Liza at her prime on DVD/Bluray.
@AntinousIsGod1 Liza & Lorna both shine and have their own unique qualities...always have enjoyed both these greats in concert and hope to many more times...enjoy the music and talent like these come once in a lifetime & they continue Judy's legacy in a way that would make her proud...
She didn't usually sing other people's songs. She had enough of her own from Kander and Ebb and the great songbook to find songs that weren't closely associated with other singers.
Now this is how "The Music That Makes Me Dance" is meant to be sung. Liza is, and always will be, the most talented of Judy's children. Liza outshines Lorna in every way... Looks, talent and voice.
I LOVE LIZA!!!! I've seen her 4 times in concert in the 1970's.Just GREAT!!! I also agree that Liza is MUCH better than Lorna. Lorna has NO star quality. That's why all she does is talk about Judy and sing Judy's songs. She can't make it on just her own!!!!!!!
Its nice to hear and see you sing your Mama 's songs. Not to worry you made that song yours but it is still nice to know you sing Judy Garlands song once in a while!!!!!!!!!!!! Still love you Judy and your daughter Liza!!!!!!!! Barbara...
I'm sorry but that song it's not a number that song is from the original score for the Broadway MUSICAL Funny Girl.! just not used in the film ! Even though Julie did sing it in particular at the Palladium concert with Liza but even though she seldom performed after the Broadway show it was Barbra Streisand song
@AntinousIsGod1 Get a grip. There is ONE great version...all others pale by comparision. And when Funny Girl is revived next year, Ms. Streisand will beyond canonized because people will realize how incredibly talent and unique she is.
Its nice to hear and see you sing your Mama 's songs. Not to worry you made that song yours but it is still nice to know you sing Judy Garlands song once in a while!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nothing and no one compares with the obc recording by streisand. Rumor has it that Streisand’s live performances during funny girl were not consistent. But she sure nails every song on the cast recording.
Love this TV special and I love l Liza Minnelli and most of the things that she has done yes even a matter of time! the movie.! but I always believe from the day I watc watched this TV show Colbert musical from Broadway in 1980 that she should have sang it only slightly lower key I adore her but she the key to me sounds a little too high for her and she it's basically shouting the lyrics at the end of the song she's almost at her vocal Breaking Point almost sounds too strident I love her Talent but they should have used a slightly lower key.!! She does not sound comfortable and I repeat I love the woman I saw her in the ACT I saw her in the rink I many times in concert where I thought and I still think she was one of the best entertainers ever of the 20th century I truly National Treasure!!!!!!
I usually don’t like her and find her mediocre but this is really nice. Of course nothing like her mother or Barbra Streisand but certainly a great effort.
Excessive volume and over-singing is how she outdid anything. She did use her mother's phrasing for much of the song. Her Mama used artistry. Liza used too much volume, which is how she compensates for the lack of vocal subtlety. Nevertheless, if I wasn't very familiar with Judy's version. I would like this performance more.

Strongly sung, acted, and performed! Liza Minnelli is a consummate performer who colors every word and note to perfection!
I LOVE LIZA!!! This special was on in 1980 and called Baryshnikov On Broadway. GREAT SPECIAL!!!!
Oh My God, that is SO sensational! This performance alone puts her at the very top of legendary singers! It really borders on operatic-level emotions and that hauntingly Garland vibrato throbs with emotion. Really really great! Thanks for posting this!

That hit in the piano... Fantastic!
This explains exactly why she's a legend! It's just a shame that this song isn't on any of her albums. What were they thinking?
She knocks the song outta the park and me along with it !!!!!!!!
Her Music Makes Me Dance...need more her.
How beautiful she is when she's singing!
It's Always Beautiful! But you're right... especially when she sings
She’s an underrated singer!
Underestimated? You can't be serious!

Liza was (and still is on occasion) a brilliant singer/actress.
Great job, Liza!
@AntinousIsGod1 Liza & Lorna both shine and have their own unique qualities...always have enjoyed both these greats in concert and hope to many more times...enjoy the music and talent like these come once in a lifetime & they continue Judy's legacy in a way that would make her proud...

Super Liza ++++++
This song was written/used in Broadway's FUNNY GIRL as a substitute for "My Man" for reasons dealing with royalties.
Fabulous
FABULOUS.
Lovely.
At her best. When she bangs her hand on the piano at the end...
thanks for posting.
when was this recorded?
thank you.
It was a TV special from about 1980. Baryshnikov on Broadway
Сколько любви!
❤😊
Besides this one and "What Did I Have I Don't Have Now" what other Barbra songs did Liza cover?
She didn't usually sing other people's songs. She had enough of her own from Kander and Ebb and the great songbook to find songs that weren't closely associated with other singers.
That didn't really answer my question but thanks!@@Broadwaybuff-pi1qg
Was Liza in love with Baryshnikov ? that she sang with such feeling
Extraordinaria.unica

Come on, Minnelli loves Streisand like a sister.
amazing!!
but i prefer like the barbra version..
both sre amazing!!
Check out sister Lorna's version ...
Its nice to hear and see you sing your Mama 's songs. Not to worry you made that song yours but it is still nice to know you sing Judy Garlands song once in a while!!!!!!!!!!!! Still love you Judy and your daughter Liza!!!!!!!!

Not bad. But check out Judy’s version and you’ll see what’s missing
Lorna knocks this out if the park. Liza is good too.
@AntinousIsGod1 Get a grip. There is ONE great version...all others pale by comparision. And when Funny Girl is revived next year, Ms. Streisand will beyond canonized because people will realize how incredibly talent and unique she is.
Love this version so much! btw Liza had an affair with the man at the piano
+Lyric S. Rogers thats Mickhail Baryshnikov
Chase Fisher Yep!
Its nice to hear and see you sing your Mama 's songs. Not to worry you made that song yours but it is still nice to know you sing Judy Garlands song once in a while!!!!!!!!!!!!
When was this?
1980. Special called Baryshnikov On Broadway.
that's Baryshnikov sitting at the piano..
IS THAT BARYSHNIKOV WHAT?
Yes. It's from a TV special they did together. Baryshnikov on BRoadway.
Nothing and no one compares with the obc recording by streisand. Rumor has it that Streisand’s live performances during funny girl were not consistent. But she sure nails every song on the cast recording.

Don't know how anyone could consider her performance in Cabaret "mediocre."
Even Liza can't hit those Streisand notes! This song made her seem mortal:(
but this isn't a "judy" song...
shinshaw2000 Judy. sang this at the palladium when she appeared. with Liza
Judy sang it in concert after Funny Girl was a hit.
Barbra sings this Best!!
Streisand need not worry.
great Liza! but I prefer Judy's voice.
She outdid her mom and Barbra on this one!!!
Out do Barbra?! You certainly are joking! She is so over the top and unnecessary dramatics to replace what she hasn’t got vocally!
@@jareddavidhirsh4948 Really? She belted out this song. Just watch Misha's raptured look...
@@miamiracer misha has a look of rapture just putting on his ballet shoes😜
@@jareddavidhirsh4948 That was no look of rapture. Don't you know that ballet shoes can never be washed!
