So cute. What a wonderful sight it is to see a bird hatch! Killdeer especially are so cute because they look just like their parents and can run around after only a short time.

We put a barrier around a killdeer nest when we had landscapers doing our grade. I left and the guy moved the eggs somewhere else. The parents could not find them, so finally when it was almost dark, I took them in. I did not have an incubator for a few days but was able to keep them warm, however a few degrees too high or low quite often. Finally got an incubator and have candled them a few times. It's been about 20 days since we took them in, and when I candle them, they still have obvious veins and no blood line but the embryos are the exact same size still. I'm thinking they have passed but would they get a blood line like chicken eggs?

Did you incubate and hatch them yourself? I've heard this is very hard to do.

Thanks for sharing! They lay their eggs in my driveway every year, but of course I don't get to see them hatch close up like this. One year I was able to watch with binoculars but that's about it.

Question: how long after the eggs hatch can I no longer worry about the nest? I ask bc I have held off my landscaping in an area waiting for the eggs to hatch. They hatched last night and I haven’t seen them back at the nest since. Is it okay for me to clear the area. It’s in a section of last years mulch.

They usually lay two batches of eggs in a single spring. First hatches.
After first batch hatches they raise their young for about a month until they can fly.
Then lay a second batch in the same nest shortly after.
This year the crows found the eggs of the first batch in early April.
Then they moved to a slightly move covered spot in late April.
The babies hatched today on may 12th.
They're done with the nest once the second batch walks away.

a killdeer bird and her mate made a nest which was unfortunately to close to our house and she had managed to make one egg but we had a party the next day and one of my little cousins didn't no not to touch the egg and well in the end the parents abandoned it. so we took the egg and put it in our incubator and now its ready to hatch, we did research on the birds but are not sure what to do if we should keep the bird or after its ready to fly let it go, we just dont no since it wont have guidance

Jess did you ever figure anything out about it?
Pretty much had the same thing happen, but with four and they all hatched. Now I'm just worried about feeding them. Can't get them to eat anything

It's a boy! I think I could hear the others in their eggs talking back to him.
