      In marvel, shield has a worldwide network of fund management and insurance backers just for ivestments to fund the projects to clean up cities, stark industries is a part of it in the mcu, so that anyone harmed should get reparations for any damage including asgardian "acts of gods", while in dc the u.n. pretty much funds all insurance claims and disaster relief in the wake of super battles as well as other semi private insurance companies

    Ya know, something I noticed about Zack Snyder's Superman is that he doesn't actually fight crime. He doesn't stop bank robbers, he doesn't stare down muggers, he doesn't do anything that would require him to testify in front of anyone (with one exception that I'll get to later). What he does is save people; from exploding oil rigs, sinking buses, burning buildings, flooded neighborhoods, crashing space rockets, invading aliens (of course), and apparently being stranded in the Arctic. He's less a "vigilante" and more of an "emergency responder".
    The exception is when he rescued Lois from the desert. Even though he was framed for the deaths of the people at the terrorist compound, his presence *did* destabilize the region, and he needed to appear before Congress to answer for that. I like that about this version of Superman. He doesn't "fight crime"; he "saves the day".

    • @PaperbackWizard
      @PaperbackWizard 8 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Oh, and can we stop the whole "Batman does nothing to help Gotham aside from being Batman" chant? The profits didn't stop flowing from Wayne Enterprises to his foundations until after he quit being Batman (quit being everything, really). There was a marked improvement in Gotham between "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight". The sun came out, and everything.

    • @PaperbackWizard
      @PaperbackWizard 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Last thing (for now). As far as the police showing up and not having a reason to arrest Crane...they have many reasons to arrest him. He's still a wanted fugitive for everything he did in "Batman Begins", and his thugs are all accessories. When the cops show up, the only question they'll have is "what do we do about these Batman-wannabe's?"

    • @shino4242
      @shino4242 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@PaperbackWizard Don't forget that while the examples they used were from movies, they were simply talking about super heroes in general. Bruce DOES use his wealth to help Gotham aside from fighting crime. Same with Tony Stark. Stark Industries, after his return from captivity, has become the worlds leader in clean energy. Also, Tony doesn't "fight crime". He specifically fights against Alien/Supernatural threats + terrorists. He's never the guy who goes to stop those bank robbers down the street. And his company openly funds this since he has a public identity.
      Also, while Red Skull wouldn't have been created if humanity didn't try to create people weapons, or whatever it was you said...Hydra was a legitimate threat with the tesseract powers weapons and NEEDED a good guy human weapon in this situation.
      Tony was just creating normal weapons...until he was kidnapped and needed to make the MKI suit to break out. And btw, he was only kidnapped because he was betrayed by the ironmonger dude in the first place. So it's not like he sat down one day and thought "We need to make a super powerful exosuit for soldiers and I'm gonna be the test pilot"
      And Loki already existed and everyone on Asgard is basically a super being. Loki specifically just became a dick because of the obvious favoritism showed by Odin to Thor. Loki wasn't "created".
      Ultrons 100% on Tony. Like, wtf Tony, you suck.

    • @PaperbackWizard
      @PaperbackWizard 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think Dan's point was, Earth didn't become Loki's target until Thor was banished here "for being a smug dick". If Thor had acted like someone who'd had 5,000 years to grow into a mature cosmic being instead of a football star who was cut from the team for using steroids, then he'd have been the proper King of Asgard, he'd have never needed to destroy the Bifrost and the Rainbow Bridge to stop Loki's plans, and Loki would never have found himself the minion of Thanos looking for Infinity Stones on Midgard in the first place. And even if Loki *did* skedaddle and go looking to conquer Earth, Thor would have been able to use the Bifrost to send a whole team to recapture him instead of only being able to go there himself through the use of Odin's "dark magic". So, yeah, Thor caused plenty of problems for himself and Earth all on his own.
      Oh, and by the way? Spider-Man's webbing can easily be cut. The cops don't have to wait around for hours for it to dissolve. And Ronan was after the Orb because Thanos sent him after the Orb. The only thing Quill did was get in the way of the Orb being delivered to Ronan and thereon to Thanos. Dan's definitely exaggerating on *some* of these points.

      Even without a specific threat in mind, it's easy to see how having an elite response team could come in handy every time any of the above tries to conquer or destroy the planet.

    I had an idea for a story involving the "Revolving-Door Club" - a group of government sanctioned 'criminals' who keep the super-powered 'heroes' from rebelling against the government through the use of cliche plots to take over the world (none of which would actually work, even if the heroes allowed the criminals to go through with them). The main character was the grandson of the world's 'Greatest Criminal Mastermind', and the arch-nemesis of the 'World's Greatest Hero', until the 'hero' realized that he was being played by the government and secretly went rogue to kill the grandpa.
    Government: People have superpowers, so how do we keep them from taking over the world?
    Researcher: Present them with threats that only they can combat so that they feel validated in their subservient role.
    Government: What about all the damage to life and property?
    Researcher: The loss of life is negligible if the heroes went rogue. We can 'confiscate' all the tech used by the 'villains', patent it, and use the proceeds to pay for repairs and hospital bills. If nothing else, there will be no shortage of construction projects to employ unskilled laborers, skilled laborers, tradesmen, and architects.
    Government: Huh, a boost to the economy, thousands of new jobs, and the heroes are kept under control . . . okay, now we need to find a cadre of super-smart patriots who are willing to be branded as the criminals and spend most of their time between 'prison breaks' and 'paroles' living in a secret government think-tank, I mean 'prison', concocting their next plot for 'world-domination'.

    Only flaw in that was Ronan the Accuser was a renegade warlord backed by Thanos, arguably the Hitler of the universe. Same thing could be said of Red Skull, since he was the Nazi super soldier well before Captain America. Also, Daniel's arguments ignore the existence of the top tier villains that generally require super responses like Thanos, Galactus, Darkseid, Apocalypse, The Anti-moniter and Dormammu.

    • @azarinevil
      @azarinevil 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Very true.. Red Skull though will be a slightly different case with his upcoming return in the MCU, he will be returned as a story device directly tied to his relationship to Cap to facilitate the direct introduction to Thanos as a character. Pretty much all the war related or apocalyptic level villains act as exceptions to the superheroes being terrible rule since they were the original subject heroes were built upon.

      Kilgraves would have died long ago if his parents never gave him super powers.
      Dark Elves' rise to power would have been averted if jane didn't tamper with the aether in a very non-scientific manner
      Thor restarted the war with the frost giants -> Odin could've taught Thor lesson well before his coronation...
      The hand's evilness is a bit of a stretch... but they're considered evil by the chaste because they worship a slightly different god than them... not getting in the religious aspects, but that doesn't make one side good or evil (they both killed to defeat the other faction)

    I expect it’d be a much more spread-out society, with smaller cities and much more developed rural zones. Gotta disperse the risk somehow.
    Anyone working at a major corporation, government agency, or innovative startup would probably also demand a certain kind of hazard pay along with a more comprehensive sort of AD&D insurance. It would be interesting to see day-to-day people navigate this kind of BS, not just insurance agents, but also everything from real estate brokers to job recruiters.
    Not to mention, there would be a mad glut of preppers and survivalists, with doomsday bunkers cropping up in everyone’s backyard.

    A few minor points:
    Ra's Al-Ghul would have destroyed Gotham if Batman had not existed to stop him, indeed it had been his plan for decades.
    Red Skull's existence is independent of Captain America's. Yeah, he did use a variant super soldier serum on himself, but that was besides the actual point. He had uncovered the Tesseract, and was planing on using it to conquer the world for the nazis if Steve hadn't stepped up to stop him.
    Loki turning evil you can blame squarely on Odin, if the allfather hadn't kept Loki's adoption and frost giant heritage secret from him, he just might not have turned bitter over the whole deal. And his assault on Earth is due to Thanos wanting the Tesseract. Selvig even points out that the portal opened from the other side.
    Malekith was going to awaken sooner or later anyway when Thanos would have collected Aether, and then we would really have been fucked.
    Heroes aren't always the cause of supervillains, often the villains appear on their own, and it takes a person to step up and become a hero to stop them.

      I got the government agency - collateral damage plan. The heros all end up working for the government that ends up infiltrated or corrupt. Then if it wasn't them who crushed my car I can sue them for not stopping it. When they try to silence me by dropping me into a vat of something there will be some freak accident that gives me super-powers and I can join them, but turn out to be working for Hydra. They have better insurance plans.

    I do wish super heroes drew the fighting to a field outside the city more often, but let's remember that the villains are attacking the city on purpose. Also, could you imagine the regular authorities trying to deal with them? they'd have to keep the super villains occupied for who knows how long while the national guard was on the way.

    Well, the sad thing about Batman (Nolan Batman) is that his endeavours became too individualistic. He was so mad that he couldn't avenge his parents deaths that he decided to personally super punch every criminal he encountered.
    That's the reason why he's a great character. Bruce Wayne is not pretending to be a perfect hero, he knows deep down that the whole Batman thing is his crazy creepy way of dealing with childhood issues.
    A good psychiatrist would've been much better and cheaper for him.

      Yeah that's the ironic thing about Batman, the second he gets over his murdered parents is the moment his character will no longer exist and my favorite example of this is when he's given a Green Lantern Ring but he rejects it because he knowingly refuses to let go of the pain the death of his parents caused him. He's got real layers to his character that many other heroes, other than Spider-Man can't really measure up to.

      Lots of people overlook the interesting aspects of the Superman character. Batman may feel like a loner but Superman literally is the last of his kind (with a few exceptions in some versions of his story, like if there's also Supergirl, Krypto, Superboy, I guess Bizarro, Eliminator, the rest of the Superman Dynasty...) and he grew up alone, having to keep his true nature a secret lest the world make him out to be even more of a freak, and potentially getting the attention of shady corporations like LexCorp/LuthorCorp and never being able to live a normal life ever again. If you watch Smallville you can see how difficult his life is just to keep that secret, and why it matters.
      Not to mention the fact that he has so many incredible powers, and could at anytime use them for his own wants, but he doesn't because he is a person of great character and virtue. And even then, he has to make sure he's always on the alert for if he ever turns evil for whatever reason, be it mind control, Red Kryptonite, or hell, if he gets angry. He has such a will for staying as patient and understanding a person, and things like Smallville do an excellent job at showing how he became that man from a simple farm boy who discovered he was unearthly and godlike in his abilities.The story of Superman is one of an immigrant who is ultimately alone in the world, but the values of a humble American family shaped him to be one of the greatest heroes of Earth despite and to not take advantage of others with his powers. He could beat up any man who curses at him, but he doesn't. He could use his powers as an unfair advantage in sports, but he doesn't. He could infringe on anyone's privacy with his x-ray vision and super-hearing, but he doesn't.
      Indeed, Superman may not seem relatable when you take a superficial look at him, but he is at the very least the kind of person we can all aspire to be. Batman might be a realistic crazy person, but not necessarily a role model if he's using his money for dressing up like a bat and taking the law into his own hands.

    @2:50 Daniel, tensile strength is not the same as shear strength, toughness, or resistance to crack tip opening. It's why you can open plastic packaging easily with a knife but not just tear it with your hands. Spider silk is really only strong in tension.
    In other words, Spiderman can web the hands of a criminal and then the police can easily cuff them and then cut them loose with a simple pocketknife.

    Its unfair to say that super heroes cause suffering. Just because a super hero exists doesn't mean people have to rise to fight them. In reality its all about the choice behind it. People seem to forget that everyone has a choice to make, whether to be good or bad. Crime would exist even with or without the super heroes. So it doesn't really make a difference.

    I disagree on that superman doesn't send any villains to jail. Example: atomic skull is running around metropolis he very publicly kills a dozen people, few minutes later superman takes him down. There is a lot of evidence from hundreds of people who would have seen atomic skull kill innocent people to have him sentenced to belle rev prison.
    And with bat man, if the people he is leaving tied up are wanted by the law, if they find that guy tied up they are going to arrest them.
    And since when does superman catching a falling plane hurt the world?

    But you know what makes MCU so great, so amazing with such emotional upheaval and turmoil? The "superheroes" look at what they've done and actually realize and wonder if what they are doing is for the good of mankind or if they are making things worse! An entire movie explains in great detail about how that one thought splits up not just a team, but friendship! Sure there's a nasty villian in the movie, but the movie barely concentrates on that villian and has the team split up and fight each other over beliefs and morale! That movie is Captain America: Civil War, a movie so amazing, it actually makes you think you're watching another avengers movie, but it's not, it's a Captain America movie! What makes the movie even better, is that no one side won, the movie never explained who was right and who was wrong, instead they explain that no matter their differences, no matter their squabbling rivalries; they will always have each others backs!!!

    Why do I feel like after that After Hours about super heroes Soren would have been able to crush Dan on all his BS? Super heroes exist in a world where the damage they cause is negligible compared to insane amount of lives they save. Batman COULD do what his parents did and make more foundations..but then criminals which GPD is ill equipped to fight would just stomp all over his good civic intentions.

      Except that can't possibly be true because everyone was still alive before the Hero showed up. The world ending/ catastrophic/ mass-murdering threats only ever show up *after* the hero does. We all know, outside the universe, that its the result of narrative structure. No point in a hero without a villain, or a villain without a hero, after all. but in-universe, the only explanation is that super-heroics only beget more violence, like a giant magnet for trouble and suffering.

      +Austin Sampson The Avengers begs to differ. Lex Luthor begs to differ. You think bad things never happened before superheroes showed up? The FUCKING POWERPUFF GIRLS FIGURED THIS OUT. The super villains were running around rampant, ruining everything. It wasn't until the girls showed up that any semblance of normal life could be gained for the city. Duh!

    • @Eshiay
      @Eshiay 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Red Skull was running around already, and would've still used the tesseract to try to win the war. Captain America was created to stop that threat. Although hilariously there are a bunch of examples of heroes creating there villains, and that's probably because in modern day stories we'd rather not explain a villain's story without them relating the character that's going to defeat them. It's the easiest way to get characters to know each other before they fight. Imagine how boring it would be if the entire movie was just them happening to see a villain and then fighting them. Not much tension when the villain doesn't think about the hero's interference.

    • @raziel710
      @raziel710 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Austin Sampson Don't overlook the key phrase in the original post " exist in a world" meaning that these heroes don't live in the real world. Many of these heroes exist in a world where there have always been heroes, some of these worlds have the public aware that these heroes existed (The Incredibles) others have some explanation of how the heroes used to fight in the shadows keeping the public blissfully ignorant to the threats to the world (Dr. Strange). In other superhero worlds the thing that gave the hero their powers also gave powers to criminals making it so that the hero and villains actually arrive at the same time. Flash (TV series) and X-men are the best examples of this being that The Flash got his powers from the particle accelerator explosion which also created dozens or possibly hundreds of meta-humans that would be there with or without the Flash. X-men's entire plot is about how humans are going through an evolution and that the mutant gene is becoming more and more frequent. Granted however there are still some heroes that cause their villains, Batman and Superman being the best examples here, but they might just be the minority when you start looking into a lot of the different lesser known heroes.

      many of the villains were made in reaction of the hero being shown to the city, spidermans villains were made in a government or underground lab just to deal with him and him alone. its a raising the bar problems if //if our cops start all wearing bullet proof vests criminals will start selling armer piercing guns, if they use tanks to move around criminals will use RPG to deal with it// the cops caused the reaction

    Alright, so these videos are fantastic. I love them. And of course, the points are generally just put together for entertainment with some evidence in there, but number 3 was too flaky. Every villain is in some way connected to he hero? That's how a story is built. That isn't a fault of superheroes that just because cause and effect is the only way events occur (aside from quantum stuff) and we're focusing on a specific part of it. The obvious antagonist would be a product of the hero's effect or could have caused the hero.

      zedeighty Vengeance? Maybe in some comics. But in the Garth Ennis and MAX comics, he explicitly states that he does it for the fuck of it. Not to help people. And that vengeance is not a valid motive to kill people.

    I feel like Marvel's Netflix shows do a pretty good job with this issue. Not just that the public is conflicted about the vigilantes, but, you know, the heroes aren't really going around making things worse (or destroying buildings and blowing shit up), and if they do, they seem pretty aware of it.
    The whole destruction of cities thing is honestly why I was so excited for Damage Control. I thought it'd bring out that issue, and I think it'd be a hilarious show if done right. I'm upset it got cancelled.

Batman from "The Dark Knight" Trilogy you need to pay more and more money! Iron Man, you need to pay more expensive money with all of your Avengers team! Spider-Man, you need to go to the therapy and pay up of all problems with Mary Jane Watson relationship! And for the people who died, we'll remember as always. 😞😞😞😞

      I've always had a cynical suspicion that "Ghostbusters II" had the right idea, in that the city would find a way to blame the heroes for all property damage and sue them into oblivion since the actual bad guy was long gone. The finger of blame must be pointed.

  • @KingOfMadCows
    @KingOfMadCows 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Even though Tony Stark is probably the worst at being a superhero, I don't think it's fair to say that he was fully responsible for creating his villains. Obadiah Stane was already evil before Tony made the Iron Man suit. He sold weapons to terrorists. Vanko's father was deported because he tried to sell technology on the black market. And Tony didn't do anything to Hammer, he just had a more successful business. Tony did treat Killian badly but how is that an excuse to become a super villain? Would you try to kill the president if a company promised you a job interview but then stood you up? Tony made Ultron because Scarlet Witch messed with his mind.

    1. Keeping criminals in jail is the job of the justice system, of which super heroes (most of the time) are no a part. You really think Superman wouldn't show up in court to testify if asked? They don;t even need to tell him, the bailiff just raises his voice and Superman would hear him. Then you got heroes like Punisher who just kills criminals, and others like Captain America, Thor, Hulk etc who don't generally deal with petty crime, and this entire point means almost nothing. Spider Man and Batman are really the only offenders.
    2. "The world would be better off without blah blah blah." Objectively wrong, since even if no one had ever done a thing with the tesseract eventually Thanos would come looking for it, and with no Avengers to confront him, goodbye Earth. Plus, Peter Quill just got caught up in shit that was already going on, had Ronan gotten the infinity stone at the start of the movie he still would have wiped out that entire planet with it. He was a racist, he wasn't evil ONLY because of Peter's involvement.
    P.S. none of the destruction in Man of Steel was Superman's fault.
    3. As much as I hate defending Batman, no. In the comics there is a warlock buried under Gotham, and his ghost turns people criminally insane at random. No social reform or charity would ever make that city a better place. But yeah, Tony Stark is the true villain of the Marvel movies.
    4. Collateral damage is commonly addressed in comics, some heroes stick around to help, some (like Flash) rebuild what gets destroyed single-handed. In Marvel there's a company called Damage Inc. that specializes in post-battle cleanup.

    • @alwaysonyourtail2563
      @alwaysonyourtail2563 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      1) how does one keep people who have all kinds of power locked up.....they cant. heck in the marvel and dc worlds villains are kept off plant or such.
      2) the hero causes a reaction of stronger people to deal with them. So while there are jerks out there like red skull out there hurting people it was isolated to him alone cap came alone and they came out of the wood works hurting more people than could be saved
      3) no amount of money would have helped gathom city it was so corrupt on all levels that money pushed in would be pocketed and bruce would be told it needs more till broke

    • @cory6266
      @cory6266 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      edward tucker 1. They can, if they're allowed to. Superman for example can just shove people into the Phantom Zone and leave them there, but it's not his place to make that decision. In Marvel Reed Richards builds a new super-prison every other week.
      2. You can make that argument for *some* villains, but a lot of them have nothing to do with the hero. Darkseid wasn't invented to be an enemy for Superman, he already existed. Vulture would exist without Spider Man, Penguin was going to do his thing if Batman existed or not.
      3. Exactly.
