    One of the most interesting things for me about Yngvi Freyr is that he helps dispel the cliche/trope that viking norse people were all violent and uncivilized, considering that they held a such high esteem a god associated with times of peace and prosperity (that combined with Odin's quest to aquire knowledge beign central to his character or Tyr's association with law, justice and the proto democratic thing)

    Wait... Had to hit paws a moment. How is it "strange" that a female fertility deity is associated with cats? Have you ever been around a cat in heat? I can think of few better examples of "getting some tail" than the house cat, including that litters of kittens can have multiple fathers (I'm thinking of some happy dwarves here...) and cats can produce 9 - 15 offspring yearly for most of their lifetime compared to human females (who at most generally can't exceed 20; how's that for fertility?). Cats will also adopt members of other families and species to raise as their own, and litter and raise kittens with the help of sisters, mother, aunts, etc. in a comeownity setting.
    The cat is the purrfect companion for Freya.

    I've worked a few times with Freyr. My connection was during the spring and during rituals giving thanks for the summer months. I personally believe there is some parallels between Freyr and Cernunnos, the Horned god of nature and the king of seasons from the celts. Though I've yet to discover any historical connections sadly.

    Freyr was also the father of the English (inglish) people, many places are named after ing or refer to boars in England, especially in agricultural areas, the English also had many names containing the prefix elf (elfwyn, elfrida etc) and the white horse is found on flags such as those in Kent where hegist and horsa first landed.
    Also many of our verbs invoke grey such as k-ing or actions ending with ing.

  • @DomAnthony89
    @DomAnthony89 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    One theory that I've read (but cannot find where at the moment) is that Freyr was more or less systematically removed from history and his importance diminished due to his being the reason some can claim kingship. As Christianity grew and had more influence on the Heathen culture this became a problem as Christian kings derived their kingship from God, Himself. So how could these kings claim the same but from Freyr. Eventually Christians took some Heaten gods and modeled the stories to be more Christian friendly and as such, Freyr got left behind on purpose.
    It's something along those lines. Now I need to find that book.

    • @alicelund147
      @alicelund147 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it was more his nature that was offensive to the Christians; they fear sexuality, virility and nudity. But his cult continued as the cult of St. Erik in Sweden.

  • @ingridita914

    Makes sense to me that the Aesir and Vanir would be both representative of two kingdoms at war and also two clans of deities. From my perspective it’s the same thing.
    It has been pretty clear to me since first navigating these territories that the stories of Gods and Norse cosmologies represent and tell the stories of the coming together of different cultures, specifically the colonization of “native cultures” by new dominating cultures arriving from far away lands and imposing their cultures and Gods on the Cultures who were of that land and more integrated into its relationship and magic.
    And it makes sense that after some time there was a form of peace as the lineages integrated. And that hostages would have represented the mixing of these lineages.
    These different cultures no doubt came with their own Gods. Some of whom would have melted into each other for various reasons, some of whom would have been lost as culture was lost due to colonization, and some of whom would have been appropriated by the new dominant culture. I see this very clearly in the Norse pantheon and in their relationships amongst the Gods.
    To me, the Vanir are clearly a clan of Gods, and a culture of people who are much more native to the land of Scandinavia, perhaps especially Sweden, then the Aesir who seem to be of the sky God culture coming from the east, like other Germanic cultures. Yes the Vanir would have been gifted in knowledge of the seasons and infertility. They were in deep relationship with the land. A relationship that new colonizers would not have. Why do I call the newer cultures colonizers? Because it is clear from the representation that has been handed down, that their gods and culture became dominant. That they replaced and co-opted the cultures that were there before. We, Scandinavians, are of course all descended from both of these lineages.
    This is a clear pattern so you can see all over the world. Not hard to recognize in our ancient stories.

    OK question, one that I've had in my back pocket ever since I started watching your channel: how well did Rick Riordan depict the norse gods/stories/mythos in his Magnus chase books? I figured this would be the right time to do it since the main character is supposedly a son of Freyr and so the author's understanding of this god in particular has a massive impact on how the story of the 3 books unfold.

    • @Andrewtr6
      @Andrewtr6 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just started reading Magnus Chase! Last summer I read all of the PJO and HoO books and started book one of Trials of Apollo but had to take a break due to school. I did get throw book two of ToA before someone told me I should have read Magnus Chase 1st so, I started reading book one a few days ago. I'm currently writing a superhero story which has heavy elements of fantasy in it inspired by Greek mythology largely and I wanna add other gods to it like Norse and Celtic because of Rick Riordan's stories and seeing videos on mythology by channels like Ocean Keltoi and Overly Sarcastic Productions. I like that someone else brought up Magnus Chase. I found it really cool that Rick decided to use Freyr instead of a more well-known god.

    Freyr is my favorite by a long shot. I have seen him in my dreams a few times. Being the God of agriculture and fertility, I look at Freyr as overseeing the harvest and abundance. I always thank him for the food he brings our way and I try to honor him by sharing what I can with those of my neighbors who may need the help. I also pray to Freyr for rain a lot because we don't get much where I live. I find him a very pleasant God to work with and woe to anyone who makes him angry. ;)
    Something I notice you didn't bring up in the video is the belief that Freyr is Freya's twin brother....?... Also,
    I am curious if, when Njord came with his children to live with the Aesir, could Freyr and Freya have been only small children? It could explain the giving of Alfheimr to Freyr as a "tooth gift"....? Is it absolute that Freyr and Freya actually 'fought' in the Aesir-Vanir war? Or is it something that is merely taken for granted in the mythologies? Many Blessings to you.

    • @OceanKeltoi
      @OceanKeltoi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There is more evidence of Freyja in the Aesir Vanir war than of Freyr, but neither are explicitly stated. It is believed that Freyja is referenced in the Voluspa as starting the war. But it could be some other deity that just isnt mentioned again.
      And I hold that they are twins personally, but I havent seen lore that backs that up yet.

    • @Greye13
      @Greye13 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@OceanKeltoi That's interesting. I haven't read the Voluspa yet, so I wasn't aware that Freya may have started the war. Oddly, although I've always regarded them as twins, I get the strange feeling/vibe that Freya is quite a bit older than Freyr. In any case, they're both pretty awesome deities. :) Thanks a bunch Ocean. I really enjoy your videos.

      It is theorized the Vanir existed even before the Aesir and it could very well be that Njord gave him Alfheim as a child, not the Aesir. I doubt they were small children, that further makes freya and freyr lesser in nature compared to the Aesir.

    It makes sense to me that as the acknowledgement of the importance of agriculture in our society has declined, so has the veneration of Freyr, with his strong agricultural associations. Different gods for different times.

    This is news to me that Freyr is often overlooked. I've always known him as a twin to Freyja and assumed he was fairly well known because of that. He's literally my patron. It's a weird thing finding out your patron, who you assumed was well known really isn't. Funnily enough I'm a trans man who started my medical transition in Jan, and I feel like it's been put on the fast track. And I feel like it's because the God of masculinity is my patron. Lol.

    Wotan so said to be a " ragger, or he who rages."
    Tan in old German met tree, and a hedge row of pine trees create wind breakers to protect ranging herds of cattle or horses during winter. Also Tree sap/ resin is used as incense, pine needs are used as fire starter, along with many other uses.
    There was a roaming trickster shaman that travel with an eagle and two ravens, this man also had some serious anger issues to deal with. He sought out spirits of the trees for wisdom where bird's nests carry secrets of the winds. He made wind chimes from the skulls of men who challenge him in anger.
    One day he battle a bear size of a man that cover himself in black ash and fought with a spear wrapped in torch render fat grease. Wotan eye was burn beyond use and his side was pierced in wrestling control of the giant's spear. Throwing out his back tripping the great one on to his own burning spear. Wotan stager to a tree and hand himself from one foot and twisted back & fore till his back reset popping into place, and removing his lifeless eye.
    He came down from the yew tree and raise his new spear saying, " I through Inspiration & Rage used this to Swaying to Fell one Black Flaming Bear !"

    I'm curious if you know about Rick Riordan's book series Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard.. It seems to me that the author, Riordan, did his research on the gods of the Norse Pantheon while writing the series because gods who are not as well-known show up a lot. It's very similar to his Percy Jackson and the Olympians series in terms of using lesser-known gods.

    Wasn't the first king of Norway Harald hårfagre also named Yngling?

    • @coregoon
      @coregoon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not named exactly, but some sources long after Harald's death (like Snorri) claim that he was part of the Ynglingar. Said sources also looks more like they're playing fast and loose with the geneology to legitimise the royal family. Snorri claims that his sources date back to Harald's skald, but that claim is also a tad dubious.
      Interestingly, the Jarls of Lade (Trøndelag) were also said to descend from the Ynglingar, unrelated to Harald.
