  • This video was made using slow motion footage to analyse the modern 10-Pin Bowling swing and release. Areas of analysis are the swing plane, knee continuation, the hinge, balance arm forward - thumb down, the apex of the swing, working the inside, the release - cupped to uncupped, the release - cocked to uncocked, and the follow through.
    Bowlers featured include PBA stars Chris Barnes, Mike Fagan, Sean Rash, Bill O'Neill, Tommy Jones, Mika Koivuniemi, Rhino Page, Dominic Barrett, Martin Larsen, Norm Duke, Pete Weber, Wes Malott, Robert Smith, Mike DeVaney, Choi Won Young and more....
    Thanks to coaches Patrick Birtig, Joe Slowinski and Jim Merrell, and also a big thanks to IABowling Channel for use of their footage and all the excellent work they do to promote the sport of bowling worldwide, and to Jani (jantukan channel) and others for uploading great HD footage.
    Please Note: This video was created as a free resource intended for education and promoting the sport of 10-pin bowling, but it is not to be downloaded from TH-cam or reproduced without permission. I make no money from this video.

      These lanes and bowlers are rigged with motion sensors, pressure pads and LASERs to monitor the biomechanics and physics of what's going on. The data's analysed at the Pentagon so Obama and co can better understand how to bomb foreign aid workers and selfless, charitable doctors with greater precision ;)

    1 verbiage/terminology refinement: knee continuation vs. center of gravity or maybe stance. What you are terming as knee continuation is an effect of the bowlers transitioning from a strong core, vertical upper body, well balance plant with their ball in hand to a stance which maintains their center of gravity without the ball and compensating for momentum. The key is ballanced, strong plant step prior to throwing the ball allows them to grip the ball more effectively and release it with those extra revs.

    I still can't figure it out. Like the golf swing, I suspect these bowlers are all making "secret," or let's say, very subtle, but essential, moves that are difficult for the untrained eye to detect even under a slow motion microscope.

      They have the ability to throw tension free (or very close to it). Ams do not.
      That's why their swings look effortless and smooth. They aren't overpowering the ball or muscling it.

    I have a question about the video, what fps was it shot in? Me and my roommate want to get a camera hopefully around 150 bucks or less that can shoot our releases and I was wondering what is important for that. I heard anywhere from around 120 fps to 240 fps could do the trick? What else is important to make sure quaility is good enough for us to see the release besides enough light! and what camera do you suggest?

    Knee continuation has nothing to do with anything. When your foot stops sliding your knee has all of your body weight behind it, so it stands to reason that your knee will continue to flex and give you a "soft landing" at the foul line. If your knee doesn't flex you will probably fall forward on your face, so practically everybody is going to flex their knee without thinking about it. Furthermore, the ball is already off your hand so there is no way that knee flex continuation can influence it in any way.
    And, BTW, bowlers have known since holes were first put in bowling balls that the thumb must come out first in order for the bowler to get any hook action on the ball. Duh!

    Nice!! I took a different route, teaching myself every step of the way. After I turned to 2 handed, I was 160 over night. The practice is what made me good, not the teaching. I think being taught is nice, but after you have a decent axis tilt, all you really need for the recipe is the 10,000 hours of practice. If your ball does not hook correctly, you need training in my opinion. Anyway, I have been bowling for 4 years, and currently hold the world record for strikes in a min (Shows channel)

    There is one more STRIKING similarity amongst the bowlers show here and many other of the same caliber, the non sliding foot, more often than not, does not make contact with ground at the point of release, I believe that this aspect of the POWER delivery contributes to being able to project the ball further down lane on a straighter trajectory allowing the ball to conserve even more energy until the ball reaches the break the break point.

  • @fallrock123
    @fallrock123 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I appreciate the video however I disagree with a lot of the analysis. For example, you drew a line and call it a 'swing plane' Essentially, a straight line from the starting position to the target the bowler is attempting to hit. This along with the camera angle defeat the actual physics of the swing, which in most bowlers you pictured was an 'inside/out' figure eight motion. If you watch the ball direction from directly behind the bowler, it is not straight at all. Good video interesting takes

    Ihavebadaim, not knowing your height, weight, or build a general rule for selecting a bowling ball is one pound per year. So a 13 or 14 pound ball is okay. From reading your post it sounds like you are using a house ball. I would recommend that you purchase yourself a ball and have it drilled to your specifications. Your pro shop at your local alley can assist you with this.Next, there are all types of wrist braces that can help you maintain a cupped positions. Again, check your local pro shop.

    Hey, I need help. I'm 13 years old and my bowling alley has 2 fingertip balls and I use a 14 pound one. This might be to heavy considering im only 13. i can keep my wrist cupped when i bring the ball up but when i go to release the ball i dont have time to think and let my thumb out and flick my fingers. i end up throwing a good speed ball with low revs. i usually cup my wrist but turn my hand in so the ball is kinda behind my back and i do good like that. i just want to know how to release good

    Your comment previous to this received too many negative votes and your original comment no longer exists. One of many indications that you're in a small minority of people parallel to those who still refuse to buy a cell phone and continue to use wired house phones. While everyone else looks forward to new technology, you're stuck in this fantasy that things will go back to the way they used to be, but it never will.
    So just get over it and enjoy the game like the rest of us.

    Oh, geez, you're absolutely right. The PBA is just crumbling before our eyes. What ever will we do? Someone start a petition to shut down every bowling ball manufacturer still using reactive resin cover stocks and weight blocks in their bowling balls! This is an outrage! Bowling is absolutely ruined! BRING BACK THE RUBBER BOWLING BALLS. TECHNOLOGY IS DESTROYING THE ESSENCE OF EVERYTHING AS WE KNOW IT.

  • @Airwrek1
    @Airwrek1 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome vid! Only point i wanted to clearly understand, is regarding the "hinge" technique. The 1st part of the commentary was that traditionally bowlers push the ball up and away from their body to realize a free swing but the follow up commentary mentions that there's no upward movement of the ball (& then minimum outward movement). So there is upward movement in the pushaway to achieve more momentum & so higher backswing + speed right? But the outward movement meaning??

  • @coolwind1723

    hello deanchamp, guys and everyone. I am a newbie around here... I want to ask a question that it may sound silly. What will happen if i keep on "cupping" or "cocking" or maybe even doing both "cocking and cupping" my wrist from the start position until follow through ?? Maybe difficulty when exiting the thumb hole or bad ball release or possible of wrist injury or anything bad ?? Thanks for the reply....

  • @raezor82
    @raezor82 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'll take a stab at it; The pros keep the arm closer to the body throughout the swing, so it will have to end up that way to stay on line. Plus, at the release a right-hander is imparting tilt and uncupping, so the forearm will continue further left on the follow through. A shorter follow through will end up with the hand by the face, while a longer one will naturally spill out to the right.

  • @DrEaMxBoI
    @DrEaMxBoI 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    you will notice a elongated "U" shape rather than and abrupt "V" shape.
    Next is the trailing leg just after the start of the slide. You will notice that most pros have their toes pointing to the right(right hander) when executing the start of the slide before a sudden snap of the knee action causing a 8-13% increase in rev rates. A great example will be DiandraAsbathy. And in the video @ 7:56 of TommyJones.
    Hope this helps in your next video. Feel free to pm me for further pictorial examples.

    Dear DeanChamp,
    Loved your upload.! However just for learning sake for all.You have missed out 2 items..
    Firstly is the finishing slide with the swing plane. The swing plane included in your video is from the back which i term as head to ball within a rectangle. however swing plane is from the side view. For example, ChrisBarnes uses a long slide to create a longer threshold for mistake recovery.Draw a curved line from the ball at the top of the swing all the way till he releases the ball

    If I was you I'd find a pro shop dude that uses collier grip for his drilling and he worries about the PITCH of your thumb. This grip takes a little time to learn how to use but it would be very similar to using a 2 finger approach cuz your thumb is basically in the ball only for balance... It also takes a lot of stress off your body when releasing the ball.

  • @DrEaMxBoI
    @DrEaMxBoI 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dear people.. love the video..
    However regarding the part where players cocked to uncocked, i need to let the people on youtube know that its a MUST to uncock it.. many other players especially kids these days get injuries because when the release is being made, the hand remains cocked thus causing injuries..
    Cheers and have fun bowling!!

  • @therunningpianist42
    @therunningpianist42 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The outward movement is just extending your arm. It's the horizontal movement in the push-away. In the stance, your arm is bent but it is extended in the push-way so that it can do the whole pendulum free armswing thing. With a "hinge" push-away, this extension of the arm looks less pronounced and the arm just drops more, rather than going out in front of the torso really far.

  • @fast5oh
    @fast5oh 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    It should be a natural pendulum, so the higher the ball is at the pushaway the higher the backswing. However, if you're trying for a high backswing remember that backswing usually affects speed, which will cause your ball to react less. Backswing should be natural, if you want height you'll end up muscling it and throwing off your timing.

    I'm guessing you force the swing. If you let the weight of the ball create the swing like a pendulum. If you have a tendency to get your hand to the side of the ball then it will get worse it you force it. If you try to slow down your swing that means you will have to use muscles to slow it down and that is not a good thing.

    thanks for the advice! i think my problem is with my release. i need to slow it down too i think so i can have my thumb leave first and then let the other fingers hook the ball. i keep thinking that i have to completely turn over on the ball with my whole hand which leads me to turning my wrist a lot. i just need to keep practicing and watch more videos :P

    I was like you 2 months ago, but you have to keep practicing.. you just need to relax, the movement is so natural at the end that when you start hooking the ball it becomes automatic. I had a lot of help watching videos like this, my mistake was that I needed to slow the speed a little so I can cup the ball in a better way and get more revs. Hope this helps.. and great video!

    Is there a video like this that pertains more to female bowlers? I know that some of this material would cross over, but things such as cocked wrists and left arms forward aren't as common in female bowlers. Would you consider doing a video highlighting things that the top women bowlers do?

    The ¨cup un-cup¨ of the release has to do with revs as much as it has to do with control, if you ¨hit up¨on the ball, then your ball motion gets very agressive and jumpy. Thats why so many of them follow through to the left side, trying to ¨roll¨ the ball, not ¨grab¨ it.
    Great video.

    I keep seeing "traditionally," shouldn't that be "now-a-days" or some variation since the title is "Modern?" The first couple times I saw "traditionally" I was expecting to see the way a particular section used to be done followed by the way it's most often done now.

    Excellant footage - I am serious in commending you on your work. It will be a help to Bowling as a Business - The sooner eveyone tries and abandons these over-elaborated and stressfull technices - the better . I mean no offence - but that's what I believe .

    hmm.. cocked to uncocked.. that isnt conscious working.. rather aduction/abduction progress
    with arm attached to body and folded elbow when down swing, u must unfolded ur elbow right before release in moredern power bowling. at that time ur wrist will be naturally "cocked"

    Through practice and some weight training. However, if you really want to get that feel...try use a two-finger release. Watch for the side roll of the ball. This sort of forces you to have it all...bent arm, cupped wrist, and a cocked wrist...but - timing is a little different.

    I was looking at my backswing too and found that its mostly in my push that gives the height to my backswing. If I push off harder with my legs, with the ball farther from my body, it does go higher but It actually has messed up my timing so I've gone back to what feels comfortable.

    I will agree to disagree, but also understand that the 2-handed approach hasn't been around at the pro level as long as WRW Jr., Duke, and PDW. (Walter Ray likes to toy with the style.) Still, given the smaller number of 2-handers, their level of success is relatively good. I know people talk about 2-handers eventually and theoretically developing back problems, but consider the factual history of one-handers with shoulder, elbow, and hand problems. (I don't even have callouses on my fingers.)

  • @shuumai
    @shuumai 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Right. They're also competing against other people with similar advantages, so it's fair. Better two-handers--better bowlers--don't spray the ball. Doesn't matter what year it is. Try that on a tough sport pattern today and see how it turns out.
    How many people complain that auto racing was better in the 70's? There is better technology now, from engines to suits. Same in swimming with pool and suit design. In all cases, at the core, there are still people competing against each other.

    On second thought. Why not bring back conditions of the past for exhibition beyond the Plastic Ball Championship? Find wood lanes, dress them old-school, and use old tech balls. Different players would adapt at different rates, no doubt, so they should be given enough time to make it a true contest of skill.
    To be fair, I know Belmo bowled terrible in Japan one time on wooden lanes. It happens. I still have faith in him as well as other pros. They also have the advantage of perspective.

  • @shuumai
    @shuumai 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I guess we'll never /really/ know because the 70's are long gone and they're not coming back. I do know that Belmo won a title using a plastic ball against Fagan who was using a reactive ball. Search for "2009 Bowling Foundation LI Classic: Final Match: Jason Belmonte vs Michael Fagan"
    Speed and revs go together. Since Belmo has plenty of both, he could reduce one or the other to match the conditions. Like Mark Roth with less effort. He can roll up the side, swing the lane, and shoot straight.

    A pendulum is just that, a pendulum. The shoulder is the fulcrum from which the unbent arm swings freely (rather than pulled then pushed). The unbent arm becomes a lever at release creating leverage. Barry Asher is a prime example of the optimum pendulum arm swing. The two-handed approach appears more like a wrestling match between the bowler and his 15 lb. opponent, in most cases.

  • @shuumai
    @shuumai 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    So, nothing changed in the 78 years leading up to the 70s?
    If you only stick with the old ways, 1 year or 120 years does't matter because you'd never try anything new to know if it would work better.
    Your assumptions of the two-handed approach aren't totally accurate, but that's a different topic. (There is at least a pendulum arc during the forward swing of a proficient two-hander. There isn't excessive twisting of the lower back, but there is increased forward bend.)

  • @20alphabet
    @20alphabet 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    If a two-handed method was viable SOMEBODY in the last 120 years would've had success with it, yet they hadn't. Not until loaded pins and loaded balls on an artificial surface became approved (by the new governing body) could anyone consistently knock down a sufficient amount of pins in this manner. A pendulum arm-swing is impossible and lower spine twisting is required. The book you mentioned is good but like many Mr. Jowdy isn't static, hoping to stay relevant. Sad, because he knows better.

    I meant, '70's style bowlers in their prime in the present day might not be able to keep up. Now we have what some people call "transitional bowlers" which are traditional-style bowlers with updated techniques and equipment. Due to the strength of newer balls, players need to generate more speed while maintaining accuracy. At least on sport patterns, controlling the release and breakpoint is critical, especially with a highly reactive, jumpy ball. (Another skill is making the ball less jumpy.)

  • @20alphabet
    @20alphabet 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    If a proficient 70's bowler couldn't "...keep up..." it wouldn't have anything to do with adjusting to differences. It would have to do with the 30-50 year age difference, that's all. Technique hasn't changed either, for the equipment has accommodated the lack of such. Now if the ball isn't doing what you want just go to the bag(s) and try another one. Can't stay behind the ball? Not to worry! The computer designed high-density core will generate all you never could, just call it "late timing"

  • @shuumai
    @shuumai 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    True to a degree. However, you'll see some of the players shooting plastic and urethane balls against players using reactive balls, playing difficult oil patterns, and scoring at the Plastic Ball Championship. A '70's bowler might not be able to keep up these days as technology has become as much a part of the game as technique, and technique has changed to handle new factors. That's all part of adapting to the conditions and figuring out how to score and outscore your opponent.

    Outstanding analyses, something to watch over and over. Even if we can't duplicate, at least we can get similar? What I mean is, remember, how you tried something in the past and could never seem to get it, yet if you kept at it - even if you gave up trying to do it, "suddenly" you were doing it? (Or at least something verisimilar to it?) But, be cautious, last season I had to stop bowling for a couple weeks when I injured myself trying a new style of release. It takes physical conditioning.

    Super cool video! What sort of injuries do these folks suffer if any? There's a lot going on here, it's hard to catch it all. Wrist, hips, elbow, maybe? What about repetitive injuries? Looks complicated, never bowled, now I'm interested!

  • @pekkaspelman
    @pekkaspelman 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I believe, it is a matter of timing and the steps they use. However if you only look at the height of a ball there is a chimera in there. Since the upper body is tilted towards the faul line even parallel, not above shoulder height will seem like very high.
