Jack Builds It and his new Supra project is the opposite. He's a seasoned pro who can do almost anything and he shows EXACTLY how painstakingly difficult and time consuming even doing the smallest tasks are. I've done a lot to my MK3, but I feel like the biggest slouch in the world compared to him.
There’s a reason insurance companies total them. Modern cars are designed to crumple on impact. Internal systems are ridiculously complex. Packaging requires complete tear downs to reach parts. Makes for entertaining content though.
I'm a parts advisor at a large body shop with a number of techs certified in structural repairs of some high end brands. You're so right - all of the parts and little systems, sensors, shutters, radiators just behind the bumper on these vehicles is astonishing. Even a light front end hit can be $12k in parts.

Not familiar with buddies channel but even as an apprentice I would've expected to have to fix the harness or since it's a flood car probably replace the entire thing.

That seems to be a common trait TH-cam has instilled in people, false confidence!!. My neighbor who is about 35 and an accountant but is an avid TH-cam home remodeling enthusiast. Gutted his kitchen one Saturday, I went and talked to him at about 1pm on that Saturday and was shown what true delusion is. This dude truly believed from what he had seen on the Tube, that if they can do it in a 15 min video. A regular person could do it in a weekend...No Problem!! He said 😮. Welp!, he finished it on Sunday! 9 months later after he finally called a contractor. He said he could do it himself for 4-5 thousand, in the end he said he spent about 45 thousand and 9 months of having no kitchen. So PSA to anybody.....If you want to do anything you have never done before.....start small until you understand the basics of what is needed. A doctor's first patient is never a heart transplant patient!!.

And, have done more to convince me to stay away from any rebuilt wrecked car as most people who do this to flip a car are cutting corners. At least with a You Tubers rebuild, you have some good documentation of the process they followed.
i remember some of the interviews from Tavarish that he said that 1000 to 3000 hours later he does not recommend anyone buying a crashed or damaged car cause the time and headaches you spent( unless u live for this issues, most people dont) its cheaper to buy a running and driving one and just enjoy it.
but i think the important point is that youtuber fix broken car because they have a income by doing video if u don't do video there no way this a good Investment
@@markk3453part of the fun is putting them back together. Driving them is over-rated and it this point I already know how they are going to drive. I buy tons of crashed and damaged cars at auction but with clean titles. I feel like I make 50% good deals and the other 50% I just buy myself work. The most recent is a rolled over 2016 Challenger Hellcat that I am swapping everything over from to a non wrecked 2018 body I have. I will have under 20k in it when done. Just finished doing an SRT 392 into a V6 body and that went well so I dove into the Hellcat project. If you are doing it for yourself it is great but if you have time restraints or money restraints then you will probably start to stress when those 2 run out.
Car TH-camrs ruin most things. The worst damage they do is on vehichle prices. Watchers don't realize these builds are financially impossible without sponsorship and DEEP pockets. None of us have buddies at Haltech or Hasport that fly in to make sure your swap fires up. Hell, I have buddies at Hasport and still pay full price for mounts. TH-camrs are so far from reality and people still think their builds will go the same.
I mean if those car are not repaired in the first place, that's because it costs way more than simply buying an equivalent running car. If some watchers think it's possible, I'm sorry but they are just dumb.
@22Epic we are in full agreement. The best way to repair a wrecked is to buy 2 cars that got totalled in different ways. I have done it multiple times with both Hondas and BMWs. I don't even check the engines in rolled over vehicles at the scrapyard. I just add power to check the mileage. The car has to be running in order to roll over. If the body is dent free and the tires are bald, I won't even pop the hood. That engine and transmission are shot from abuse and/or neglect. No other reason for the vehicle to end up in the yard. In most cases, the extra stuff I sell on Marketplace and eBay almost covers the cost of the few things that absolutely need to be purchased new. Buying replacement parts one-by-one is a formula for trust fund babies and/or the ill-informed.
@@22Epici mean some people have more time (and luck to stumble upon a decent platform that doesnt have that bad a damage or a steal) than others so working on their own time and pace is a decent trade off. also to use it as a learning experience and not expect to make a business on flipping (unless it made sense)
@RafaelLopeztattoos the cheapest I ever built was a 1998 CRV for $300. $220 for a B20 from a 1999 and $55 for new oil and spark plugs. Got 25,000 miles without a hiccup before the car was vandalized beyond repair. This all happened just before the pandemic. I doubt I'll ever get back down to $600 builds. Doing a 2009 Acura TSX [6-speed] next. Paid $800 for one that threw a rod bearing and got shut right down. Sat on brand new rubber with a battery maintainer until I picked it up. I have a 2005 TSX with the dual V-TEC headed K24A2. Swapping those heads and selling off the 2005, making the 2009 my next track car. And all 3 cars in this reply have clean green titles.
I think they are suffering from wishful thinking because none of the wrecked copart car rebuild series looked easy at any point in time unless it was some minor issue the car had that only required a cheap part to replace. That, and in a lot of cases, they usually did their due diligence and when they didn't the rebuild was a nightmare. In the case of the M5 rebuild, it isn't the double rebuild status of the car (flooded and wrecked) since the car was brought back to running condition after being wrecked, it's the simple fact they didn't check the cars background before bidding on it which has bitten more than one YTer in the past.
We get 1 or 2 cars a month at my body shop that are trailered from auctions with someone who thinks they have a quick flip and easy money which we usually turn away. The few that we have done are a nightmare because most people want it done for cheaper and faster than actually doing it right.
I've rebuilt quite a few cars in the last thirty plus years. It's much easier now with the access the internet provides. The key is not thinking you're gonna make money doing it. If you take your time and do it as hobby/learning experience, it can be a lot of fun.
Best channel to get a sense of what it takes to restore a classic vehicle is Sarah-n-Tuned. She is meticulous in her builds and does it all herself. No teams of helpers in the background and no sponsors forcing their products in her cars. She shows all the steps, including the boring stuff like 2 weeks of sanding a car to prep for paint. If you want to see what it takes to do a clean restoration that is OEM or OEM + then check out Sarah-n-Tuned. You can’t get more real than her channel.

I can applaud anybody for taking on the challenge of rebuilding salvaged cars as overall regardless of condition those are intimidating projects! Yet... has this person not seen Samcrac's channel? Sam has put out multiple videos on what to look for and avoid when taking on a salvage project, two very key things being 1) research the car and get as much history on it as possible, and 2) avoid flood cars like the plague!! Sam has rebuilt a few flood cars (as has Rich Rebuilds) and both those channels have shown how extremely difficult and risky that is. Also Tavarish is currently rebuilding a flooded P1 and the amount of crap he's delt with just from the flooding alone has NOT been hand waved away. In fact most of the OG rebuilding channels have ONLY shown how tricky it can be. Point being.... has this person been living under a rock??
This is why I do not watch any of those crash car rebuilds. It’s financially irresponsible and they’re only able to do it because TH-cam is paying for it…. Automotive car content has run out and this is realistically speaking the latest type of car content and that’s why everybody’s trying to do it. There’s absolutely almost no ideas left for car content.
I am a master collision tech . It will cost more in the end to repair an insurance total PROPERLY than to simply purchase a simmilar vehicle not wrecked.
What sreten works on is child's play compared to an F90 M5, I love the guy but he'd quit youtube if you forced him to repair a crashed anything from 2015 and on
To be fair, the cars Streten is working on are old and classic. They actually have less complex engineering and technology than modern BMWs like the G80 and F80 M3s. His cars are far more analogue and mechanical than something like the F10 and F90 M5s. Also Streten's cars are all in "good" condition. As in they're not crash damaged or flooded. The closest he got to repairing a totalled car was the white E60 M5 in the US which had minor front damage.
Sreten works on older and less complex BMW's for a reason. He is smart enough to know the newer ones are obscenely complex, unreliable and diffucult to repair. Very wise if you ask me.

I personally bought a crash damaged car from auction recently. For first timers I would totally recommend buying a rear end damaged car, way easier to repair than a front damaged one. And for now the repair of mine its been fairly straightforward. Its the first time i ever worked on a car but if you know what you are looking for its not that complicated.
Rebuilding cars can be worth it as long as you can find lots of cheap used parts which isn´t the case for supercars. You also have to be able to understand how part numbers work because lots of parts are interchangeable, I´ve seen TH-camrs look for a part for a specific model and pay a fortune when you can buy the same part from a lower model for sometimes half the price. I´ve rebuilt 2 everyday cars for myself and I´ve always managed to do it and save money. Here in Europe if go to a car part dealer with the license plate or vin number they will tell you exactly what parts your car uses and with that part code you can find alternatives. If you’ve ever done any rebuild you know that these TH-camrs don´t show you the headaches, they only show you the fun parts. Also keep in mind that they aren´t rebuilding the car with their money, we are all paying for it so if the car turns out to be more expensive than buying a good one it´s not a problem for them………..

Pretty much all the cars I’ve owned were crashed.Had very little issues. My advice always get runs and drive and stay away from front end hits unless the car is mid engine
I hate working on new cars, everything is over complicated. Like my nissan Altima oh you want to replace the headlights because you know they burn out. Well you're going to have to dismantle the whole front of the car.

Salvage means salvage. Salvage means it takes more money to fix than its worth. By definition you're in the hole as soon as you buy it under the assumption you (can) fix it properly. If your youtube makes tons of money to offset that loss and profit sweet! If not or you're an average joe stay far away.
i wouldn't say so, in case YOU or your friends fix it its definitely viable, in some cases, but for the insurance, shops prices were not worth the price for repair. i got more than few friends with salvage cars fixed properly for less than they would be worth, but that's not counting Dozens and dozens of hours of work that goes into it
Apart from all those TH-camrs, there are some youtube channels that go into detail about what you need to know and what tools you need to fix a crashed car. Most youtubers just speedrun the whole process into a 30 min video.
I'm currently trying to rebuild a wrecked Subaru Impreza, not for a TH-cam build, just because. It's notably not as complicated as this kind of thing can be, but it ha it's challenges. The biggest issue is that it wasn't stock to begin with, and it wasn't the kind of build you normally see. There are so many STI and WRX engine swaps, crazy turbo builds, etc. This one features a Raptor Supercharger and an obsolete and not much loved Greddy tuning solution. I've been procrastinating the "get the engine started" part of the project by working on the suspension and body, but I'll be elbows deep in 20 year old electronics tech soon enough! At the end, hopefully I will have a unique and interesting rallycross/autocross car but I've already resigned myself to the idea that it won't be very competitive in the insane classes the motor is going to put me in.
@ssnerd583 the profit is already there. There were receipts for brand new parts that were still in the boxes in the car that added up to more than I paid for the whole mess. The kid wrecked it 2 1/2 years ago, gathered almost everything to fix it, then got bored with cars because of motorcycles. I had been low balling him since the crash as a joke. I guess the joke was on me. 🤣 I was actually going to start the motor for the first time today but I left the keys for it at work.
I used to regularly buy salvage cars, sometimes for repair but usually as parts cars. The problem is all these TH-camr's have glorified rebuilding salvage cars and now we have a situation where bozo's with no skills or experience are buying salvage cars hoping to emulate their YT hero's. It has completely distorted the market as we now have blokes buying these cars, way over what they are worth, with no understanding of how much work and expense is involved in putting these things back on the road. So you end up with poorly repaired, permanently branded title cars that end up costing more than if you just went out and bought a good one at market value. The auction co's are, of course, cashing in on this idiocy, and are now getting prices for cars (and fees) that they could not have dreamed of prior to the YT hype. Sorry that this fellow got caught up in the hype, but live and learn I guess. I do enjoy his style so please get him back as a guest.
I think from what I can gather the secret to these easy you tube repairs is having a good team behind you who can do these jobs for you but let you do it under their supervision because you pay them well. Could be completely wrong
You cant splice can bus wires. You have to replace the harness or the wire. The wires run off of resistance, when you add resistance with a splice, it creates problems.
A lot of those cars in those videos had structural damage. And I'm SURE that every one of those TH-camrs followed factory repair procedures using OEM parts for the rebuild. Totally sure.
After 35 years as a body tech I have to laugh at amateurs trying to rebuild total losses. A tech, estimate writer, insurance adjuster, and his supervisor have all seriously looked at the car and determined it was not economically repairable. Then some Dilbert off the street things he knows better? And if they ever get something cobbled together, surprise its worth half of an uncrashed car.
its possible to fix them if you put in work instead of paying shop for their time and effort that's like half the price of the repair. but with how lucrative parting cars is, rebuilds are kind of dead by now.
As much youtubers make it look easy common sense tells you it's not easy, just because a days work can be edited into a 25 min segment does not equal easy or cheap to do. I have rebuilt two cars and know to stay away from accident or flood cars, I prefer mechanically totalled cars for obvious reasons. Simply because I can have the car running withom a week or two and I constantly compare effort to time needed to get it fixed versus replacing parts. 😂

Even professional bmw techs knew this is no go. He is very lucky previous owner told him it had a engine chewing tune. Imagine if you found out after new motor was chewed. In my country we have problems with Subarus. None of them are stock and half the problems are due to bad tunes…worse if you buy accident damaged one. My rule is never touch a Subaru… but I am now close to never touching a BMW

But now he's just throwing it away. He overpaid for the GT3RS which is literally paperweight. Chassis is destroyed, electrics were all wet and the engine block was rusted. He's building the car at a loss now.

I do cars, Eric, disassembled an M5 4.4. The octopus hoses & wiring web was crazy complicated.

It's not bad until you mention flooded.
You have to check every wire and connecting terminal. Corrosion on connectors will ruin your day.
Without TH-cam compensation most of the rebuilds would never happen.

Matt Armstrong's not so secret weapon is his Dad.
Was his dad a mechanic? He's super knowledgeable. I just recently started watching their channel so I don't really know the history.

I can applaud anybody for taking on the challenge of rebuilding salvaged cars as overall regardless of condition those are intimidating projects! Yet... has this person not seen Samcrac's channel? Sam has put out multiple videos on what to look for and avoid when taking on a salvage project, two very key things being 1) research the car and get as much history on it as possible, and 2) avoid flood cars like the plague!! Sam has rebuilt a few flood cars (as has Rich Rebuilds) and both those channels have shown how extremely difficult and risky that is. Also Tavarish is currently rebuilding a flooded P1 and the amount of crap he's delt with just from the flooding alone has NOT been hand waved away. In fact most of the OG rebuilding channels have ONLY shown how tricky it can be.

This is why I do not watch any of those crash car rebuilds. It’s financially irresponsible and they’re only able to do it because TH-cam is paying for it…. Automotive car content has run out and this is realistically speaking the latest type of car content and that’s why everybody’s trying to do it. There’s absolutely almost no ideas left for car content.

If insurance would rather pay out than pay to fix? That sums it up. TH-camrs can do it only because the build videos can cover the added costs.
I am a master collision tech . It will cost more in the end to repair an insurance total PROPERLY than to simply purchase a simmilar vehicle not wrecked.

What sreten works on is child's play compared to an F90 M5, I love the guy but he'd quit youtube if you forced him to repair a crashed anything from 2015 and on
To be fair, the cars Streten is working on are old and classic. They actually have less complex engineering and technology than modern BMWs like the G80 and F80 M3s.
His cars are far more analogue and mechanical than something like the F10 and F90 M5s.
Also Streten's cars are all in "good" condition. As in they're not crash damaged or flooded. The closest he got to repairing a totalled car was the white E60 M5 in the US which had minor front damage.

Sreten works on older and less complex BMW's for a reason. He is smart enough to know the newer ones are obscenely complex, unreliable and diffucult to repair. Very wise if you ask me.

I personally bought a crash damaged car from auction recently. For first timers I would totally recommend buying a rear end damaged car, way easier to repair than a front damaged one. And for now the repair of mine its been fairly straightforward. Its the first time i ever worked on a car but if you know what you are looking for its not that complicated.
People who are really good at things make them look effortless.
Rebuilding cars can be worth it as long as you can find lots of cheap used parts which isn´t the case for supercars. You also have to be able to understand how part numbers work because lots of parts are interchangeable, I´ve seen TH-camrs look for a part for a specific model and pay a fortune when you can buy the same part from a lower model for sometimes half the price. I´ve rebuilt 2 everyday cars for myself and I´ve always managed to do it and save money. Here in Europe if go to a car part dealer with the license plate or vin number they will tell you exactly what parts your car uses and with that part code you can find alternatives. If you’ve ever done any rebuild you know that these TH-camrs don´t show you the headaches, they only show you the fun parts. Also keep in mind that they aren´t rebuilding the car with their money, we are all paying for it so if the car turns out to be more expensive than buying a good one it´s not a problem for them………..

Pretty much all the cars I’ve owned were crashed.Had very little issues.
My advice always get runs and drive and stay away from front end hits unless the car is mid engine

Salvage means salvage. Salvage means it takes more money to fix than its worth. By definition you're in the hole as soon as you buy it under the assumption you (can) fix it properly.
If your youtube makes tons of money to offset that loss and profit sweet! If not or you're an average joe stay far away.
i wouldn't say so, in case YOU or your friends fix it its definitely viable, in some cases, but for the insurance, shops prices were not worth the price for repair.
i got more than few friends with salvage cars fixed properly for less than they would be worth, but that's not counting Dozens and dozens of hours of work that goes into it
Apart from all those TH-camrs, there are some youtube channels that go into detail about what you need to know and what tools you need to fix a crashed car. Most youtubers just speedrun the whole process into a 30 min video.
I'm currently trying to rebuild a wrecked Subaru Impreza, not for a TH-cam build, just because. It's notably not as complicated as this kind of thing can be, but it ha it's challenges. The biggest issue is that it wasn't stock to begin with, and it wasn't the kind of build you normally see. There are so many STI and WRX engine swaps, crazy turbo builds, etc. This one features a Raptor Supercharger and an obsolete and not much loved Greddy tuning solution. I've been procrastinating the "get the engine started" part of the project by working on the suspension and body, but I'll be elbows deep in 20 year old electronics tech soon enough! At the end, hopefully I will have a unique and interesting rallycross/autocross car but I've already resigned myself to the idea that it won't be very competitive in the insane classes the motor is going to put me in.

@ssnerd583 the profit is already there. There were receipts for brand new parts that were still in the boxes in the car that added up to more than I paid for the whole mess. The kid wrecked it 2 1/2 years ago, gathered almost everything to fix it, then got bored with cars because of motorcycles. I had been low balling him since the crash as a joke. I guess the joke was on me. 🤣 I was actually going to start the motor for the first time today but I left the keys for it at work.
I used to regularly buy salvage cars, sometimes for repair but usually as parts cars. The problem is all these TH-camr's have glorified rebuilding salvage cars and now we have a situation where bozo's with no skills or experience are buying salvage cars hoping to emulate their YT hero's. It has completely distorted the market as we now have blokes buying these cars, way over what they are worth, with no understanding of how much work and expense is involved in putting these things back on the road. So you end up with poorly repaired, permanently branded title cars that end up costing more than if you just went out and bought a good one at market value. The auction co's are, of course, cashing in on this idiocy, and are now getting prices for cars (and fees) that they could not have dreamed of prior to the YT hype. Sorry that this fellow got caught up in the hype, but live and learn I guess. I do enjoy his style so please get him back as a guest.
I think from what I can gather the secret to these easy you tube repairs is having a good team behind you who can do these jobs for you but let you do it under their supervision because you pay them well. Could be completely wrong

Stacy David has been telling us you can do a complete restore in under 30 minutes (with commercial breaks) since like 1983.
You cant splice can bus wires. You have to replace the harness or the wire. The wires run off of resistance, when you add resistance with a splice, it creates problems.
This. Same with coaxial wires. They can work if you solder them together, but it sure will affect the strength of the signal at least.

After 35 years as a body tech I have to laugh at amateurs trying to rebuild total losses. A tech, estimate writer, insurance adjuster, and his supervisor have all seriously looked at the car and determined it was not economically repairable. Then some Dilbert off the street things he knows better? And if they ever get something cobbled together, surprise its worth half of an uncrashed car.
its possible to fix them if you put in work instead of paying shop for their time and effort that's like half the price of the repair. but with how lucrative parting cars is, rebuilds are kind of dead by now.

As much youtubers make it look easy common sense tells you it's not easy, just because a days work can be edited into a 25 min segment does not equal easy or cheap to do. I have rebuilt two cars and know to stay away from accident or flood cars, I prefer mechanically totalled cars for obvious reasons. Simply because I can have the car running withom a week or two and I constantly compare effort to time needed to get it fixed versus replacing parts. 😂
If you want to rebuild something, buy a motorcycle to give you a taste of rebuilding modern cars

BMW's are horribly built to begin with, so finding out they are hard to repair REALLY isn't a surprise!
Even professional bmw techs knew this is no go. He is very lucky previous owner told him it had a engine chewing tune. Imagine if you found out after new motor was chewed. In my country we have problems with Subarus. None of them are stock and half the problems are due to bad tunes…worse if you buy accident damaged one. My rule is never touch a Subaru… but I am now close to never touching a BMW

He overpaid for the GT3RS which is literally paperweight. Chassis is destroyed, electrics were all wet and the engine block was rusted. He's building the car at a loss now.
