Such an awesome video. Dubstep may have gone out of vogue since 2013, but in 2040, people will be coming back to this video to learn how to make "classic dubstep" from the time before OTT and Serum!
Yeah, I realize how dumb I sound in this video now. I've learned a LOT more about FM synthesis since this video. Even using calculus to determine modulation patterns XD I know that operators are modulated by the derivative of the modulating operator, which is why a triangle wave behaves like a square wave; constant positive slope for first 0.5T, constant negative slope for remaining 0.5T. Still have to find magnitude of modulation though. Also, I use the morph pad a lot now :3
IF YOUR BASS SOUNDS DIFFERENT READ THIS!!!!...Hello, the problem you are having is most likely the notes he is playing, unfortunately he doesn't tell you the notes, but fear not here is a solution to your problem remember in the beginning he was trying to show you to wave form of a triangle and was making really low, you probably watched and didn't realize that when he went to go make the note lower he went to the master and pitched it down 2 octaves (-24) and throughout the video he doesn't change it back if you do this it shouldn't be hard to find the right note and make the same sound. Hope i helped have a great day! c: God bless everyone!
FM8 has a matrix-based routing system, whereas Operator only has a number of fixed routing configurations. Operator also has a maximum of 4 operators, whereas FM8 has 6. Operator ratios are also limited in Operator, which has a discrete set of ratios, whereas FM8 has a continuous range of operator ratios. I think I've covered the majority of the most common features of both synths - anyone else who can add, feel free to do so :)
jesus christ you are actually a knowledgable audio guy on youtube. never thought that would see the light of day. beautiful tutorial, I had so much fun messing with some skrillexy sounds. thanks :)
You, sir, are a genius. I've made it about halfway through the tutorial (to the part where you add the FM8 patch to the vocals) and it's only taken 8 hours or so. What I have now compared to what I started with are worlds apart, as is my understanding of the software. Thank you.
**SOLVED** Anyone else finding that this sounds really different on newer versions of fm8? even by 3:30 when he switches to the triangle wave I'm finding that I'm getting very different harmonics out of the sound. I wonder if NI have slightly updated the triangle sound since then. The confusion came from when he turned all the velocity sensitivity up. Make sure you're inputting notes at 100 velocity! Otherwise it won't sound the same
It's funny, I heard you play the acapella by itself at the beginning and thought "wow, he didn't really do much, he just found an audio of the growl." and then you turned off the vocoder and blew my mind. haha great tutorial man!
hyp3Rgaming I actually watched the whole thing-and one problem is, I don't have FM8. But I am REALLY good at using Sytrus-I've made some pretty awesome basses in it. I think I understood most of it. Does anyone need help understanding what exactly he did in each step?
Once installed, FM8 will be placed in your default VST plugins folder. You must locate and select this folder in Live's preferences. Once Live knows the location of this folder, it will catalog all the VSTs present in that folder.
One of the best tutorials I've ever heard. Short, dense in information and most importantly you show us very frequently what the sound is sounding like after the smallest tweaks. I also dig the FM8 theory. Thank you so much!
I tried that and now my sidechain is on point, did not think to use the eq within the compressor, thanks mate :D can't wait to hear some of your new tunes!
Great tutorial, helped me a lot to get started with FM8. Finding out how to map the way you did with the makro's took me some time, got it working now. Thnx again, you couldn't be more helpful!
i've heard your music on soundcloud and u're really talented :) growls are spectacular such as your technique :) wish u all the lack of the world ahah :D
Yeah this came to me one day in a calculus class x_x... FM8 is a PM synth, which means phase modulation. In a nutshell, the derivative of the wave is used instead of the wave itself :3 And thank you /)^_^(\
I'm not joking, I've seen EVERY tutorial on youtube. Not even one compares to this! you've nailed It sounds exactly like skrillex man. Thanks a lot!! I Think every producer on youtube should see this video...
"you can do it in FL by linking all the controls to one automation clip :)" been looking on how to do that and now i know cuz of you...thanx a bunch!!!
Did everything according to plan and I couldn't get it to sound any different after 6:22 and even that doesn't sound exactly the same. It's worth noting I'm using Live 9, do you think that's the problem?
No jokes. This is the best tutorial I've ever seen on TH-cam on any sound. This beats Seamless' stuff. Just a quick question; your macro one, I'm not an ableton user. Is that just controlling the percentage effect of the operators from 0 to 100%? But this is amazing. Well worth the 30mins. :D
I've had a think about it, and I recommend reducing the vocoder's 'Depth' parameter. That will make the sound sit more with the carrier, and reduce the influence the vocals have on the carrier sound, decreasing overall 'wetness'. Increasing the bandwidth may also help reduce this 'wetness'.
Hey. Thank you for the tutorial. It was very helpful. In theory I know a lot about FM, but never realized how these "wow"/formants are made with a very high pitched modulation frequency... Thank you very much.
hi! first of all thank you for your awsome tutorials. I am using orion as a daw and there is no option of using macros for cc. any idea haow to map to control every paramter at the same time?
All I do is sidechain using standard method with Ableton Compressor and the use the EQ section inside compressor to cut the lows, which gives a short sidechain that ducks the track just enough to sound good, while not going overboard. Just play around with the EQ inside compressor, it's really useful :)
If you use Live, you can do this in the piano roll. The small section underneath the piano keyboard will have vertical lines whose positions correspond with the starting position of each note. Drag these up and down to adjust the velocity of the notes. Greater precision can be achieved by holding "Ctrl" while dragging.
ARTFX does a good video using Operator. I actually followed along to that video and got some good results but yea....FM8 is just much more powerful...much more.
I have never been a Skrillex fan, I came for the ''Growl Synthesis'' and I liked your video becuase it's a boss, your sound is amazing and great explanation tho. Hugs for you m8.
The vocoder in Ableton Live 8 has this capability. You may have to click the expand button (circular button with a triangular arrow in the centre) to show it, but it is there.
You can use the Morph function as well to change the sound of FM8. Make the first sound you want, then go to the Easy/Morph panel, and under the XY, click on "Normalize Timbres". That will copy the sound to all of the four slots for the morph. Once you do that and change the sound of at least two of the xy slots, you can modulate the X or Y instead of mapping them individually, which is of course, very tedious.
Exquisite tutorial man! One question though, and sorry if this was previously answered in past comments but... What kind of processing do you have on the group channel? I'm noticing my re-creation isn't sounding quite 'as fat'.
I think it would be nice to have a download for the patch because I'm totally new not only to FM8, but Ableton as well (I'm used to Massive and FL Studio) but yeah I followed the tutorial and I can't figure out what I did wrong but it doesn't sound like his... A patch would be nice in my opinion but only cause I'm a newbie I guess. I do agree that learning how it's actually done is very fun but it can be frustrating when I don't get the same sound...
excellent tutorial, been having trouble understanding fm8 this really got my head around it. i would have paid good money for this. cheers mate. subscribed!
You can do the mod-thingy within FM8 if you are using a DAW that doesn't support multi-parameter modulation. It#s even easier that way... Just save two patches: One with all the modulator-volumes set to the levels shown in the video. Name it "Skrillex Open" or something. Then set all the volumes to zero and save the patch as "Skrillex Closed". Now go to your browser within the FM8, find the two patches you just created and drag&drop the "Closed" patch to the lower-left morph-field in the upper part of FM8 and drag&drop the "Open" patch to the upper-left morph-field. Now by dragging the handle in the morph-field up and down you get the exact same modulation effect. If you want to automate it from within the DAW (e.g. Cubase), just find and use the "Morph Y" parameter. Done!
It's basically a square wave, run through a lowpass filter to remove the higher harmonic overtones. Gotta leave a few overtones though; that's why it sounds huge.
I'm in FL Studio 11, and I cant figure out how to set a minimum or a maximum for the macros that control the matrices' values. like setting 32 as the maximum value for the matrix as d modulates f through e.
Hey! What do you use for making your Sub Bass? I really liked how it sounded compared to mine. Great patch btw, you can really get some interesting noises.
Was the Edison (FL studio plug in) located at the effect channel? or MIDI (or) audio channel? I want to know! You know... Sylenth1 in FL studio go to the block making beat pattern while the Edison goes to the effect channel (mixer).
i really appreciate you doing this. is this like the patch that you used for dogfight? (which is amazing) the patch in dogfight has a really granular quality to it though which i'm trying to get...knife party does a similar thing in "centipede"...how'd you get it to sound like that? maybe a fast LFO on one parameter? thanks jaymac! you're the best dude
Well, you can do it in any DAW that supports a vocoder. It won't sound exactly the same, but the idea is to vocode the FM bass with any vocal-sounding sample, and you'll get a vocal-sounding bass. I don't know if Logic has a stock-vocoder, but there are some vocoder AU's you could use.
As FL does not have an 'Instrument Rack' with macro controls, you have to use the X-Y Controller. Assign the parameters to these, and use the min and max knobs to set the range. It's more tedious than Ableton, but it works in the end. You won't be able to save the patch in a rack though.
I'm sure this question has been asked before. But how did you get the "Fm8 Growl" notes? Did you have to manually put then in or was there a way for vocoder to do it?
Very good tutorial. Really loved it! This sound reminds me of kill the noise :) Btw here's a neat trick. You can use the fm8 own Modwheel so you don't have to use external one ;) Here's how I did it 1. Go to the mod page in fm8 and delete the pitch route (click and scroll to zero) 2. Put everything to 100 except operator F. The Amount you leave determine how much sub bass you have left when everything else is off. Or put it also 100 and use sine from another plug as a sub bass :)
man, no matter what i do my patch won't sound even close to this. i've rewatched this video at least 5 times and did everything the same way but it just won't sound the way it should. btw really good final product, probably one of the best i've ever heard.
No, the sine curve is not parabolic. That fact rates a proof too. Suppose that the curve segment is parabolic. Then we should be able to fit a parabola to these three points: (0, 0), (π/2, 1), (π, 0) Having x-intercepts at 0 and π gives it this form: y = ax(x - π) Substitute (π/2, 1) 1 = a(π/2)(π/2 - π) 1 = -aπ²/4 a = 4/π² y = (-4/π²)x(x - π) y = (-4/π²)x² + (4/π)x Now let x = π/4. y = (-4/π²)(π/4)² + (4/π)(π/4) y = -1/4 + 1 y = 3/4 However, sin(π/4) = √(2)/2, and √(2)/2 ≠ 3/4. Therefore, we must reject the proposition that the sine curve is parabolic.
You're absolutely right. A DAW is like a language. There are many, and they are all vastly different, but the main purpose is to communicate meaning to others; you just need to understand the language used, and if you want to say the same thing in a different language, you must do some translation. I, for one, prefer to speak Ableton, but a similar approximation can be translated to FL ;)
Use the mapping formula in the parameter automation settings. In FL Studio, automated parameters are mapped as a function of input, f(input), where input is the value of the slope of the automation clip at a particular point in time. Basically, reducing the slope of the function will reduce the maximum output values. TL;DR, or if you don't like math In the mapping formula box, put a number in front of 'Input' (fraction of 1) that you want the max value to be, i.e. 0.32 for 32 in FM8's matrix.
By the end my patch didn't sound much like yours, still learned loads and am subscribing. Two questions: do you make the operators velocity sensitive to tweak each note later, or just to make it louder? My patch was touchy to different velocities. Second, I found that it kind of hard to get the sub-bass and the wub-bass to sound in tune with each other. Since the upper harmonics are moving around like mad in the wub, it sounded odd when I tried to put something under it. Any advice on how to make the sub and wub more cohesive would be great. Thanks!
Hey man, Really great tutorial! How did you learn synthesis and sound design? I've been producing for about 4 months now and I haven't found anything on actual sound design. Almost all of the videos on synthesis that I've found are just basic stuff like filters and envelopes, etc. Could you please give some advice on this!
Weird, when I use my vocoder on fm8 and select the audio from the track I want it to vocode, the fm8 bass just stops working and the vocals come out instead. Any way to fix this?
Make sure the vocoder is on the *vocal track* and the dry/wet slider is set to *wet*. In *carrier* make sure it is set to *external* and underneath select the name of the track with the bass on it. Then it should work
When I automate the macro knob the sound changes discretely rather than continuously. The problem lies within FM8 and not with the DAW. Any ideas? Thanks
jAyMaC +1 fred, I have the same issue sometimes... it is because you are using your primary sound driver as opposed to the ASIO driver. I know what you mean, the automation is chopped up. Notice that this is only when you are manually turning the knobs during playback... if an automation track does it (or you bounce the sound to WAV), then its continuous.
Maan, really good tutorial, thank you very much!! I saw on your soundcloud site only remakes... with your potential you could do so great own songs! or do you have own songs?
Random question, i use Reason 7 and have PX7 FM Synth, would you say you could recreate this on any FM Synth? As I'm trying to recreate this patch but having a hard time
thank you! I never before dared to get into fm-synthesis but your tutorial really did it for me. :) great job and very much appreciated! (now I just wished Studio One had Macro-Controllers like Ableton) edit: found a solution, just use the fm8 morph-controller :)
Thanks, I never really considered using the morph function. Upon closer inspection, it seems to do what Sytrus' XY pad does, except it's more versatile and remembers every change. I'll be using this from now on; thanks :D
10 years later and it's still one of the best production videos on YT

Max Hannan Thanks. Do you know how to do this bass in Sytrus tho? I tried, and ALMOST got there. But didn't quite get the right sound.
mimic the fm8 patch one to one and adjust when needed
im replying to this comment to bring you back to 2015

Wow, someone on youtube who actually knows audio engineering! PROPS!
@Caleb Miles omg no one gives a shit

By far the best and most professional tutorial I've come across yet.
honestly man you are so much more spot on with your remakes than most

Don't worry. It's not as hard as it looks. *Tutorial is 30 minutes long.* Makes perfect sense.
he could have shown us how to make this patch, but he is explaining how he is doing it. :)
If you don't get the joke, it's ok. But don't post comments telling me that a 30 minute tutorial isn't long, because I already know that.
Hard ≠ Long
hyp3Rgaming I actually watched the whole thing-and one problem is, I don't have FM8. But I am REALLY good at using Sytrus-I've made some pretty awesome basses in it. I think I understood most of it. Does anyone need help understanding what exactly he did in each step?
hyp3Rgaming It looked more like you were looking at the HARDNESS of the tutorial and said it was 30 minutes long.
Once installed, FM8 will be placed in your default VST plugins folder. You must locate and select this folder in Live's preferences. Once Live knows the location of this folder, it will catalog all the VSTs present in that folder.

Great tutorial
Hey man, just wanted to say: you aren't stupid at all! You've helped so many of us. Terrific tutorial.
Dude. Your tutorials are the best on youtube. Please keep them coming. People like us need people like you to blur the line between amateur and elite.

I'm gonna have to say this is incredible man no lie quality patch def one of the best fm patches online of not the best

you've nailed It sounds exactly like skrillex man. Thanks a lot!!
I Think every producer on youtube should see this video...

"you can do it in FL by linking all the controls to one automation clip :)" been looking on how to do that and now i know cuz of you...thanx a bunch!!!
Nicely done, man! You nailed the sound, and I think I've got a pretty good idea of how to use your techniques in my workflow now. Thanks!
The Modulation you drew on that track was Fantastic :)

that vocoder idea is so smart!
excellent tutorial, been having trouble understanding fm8 this really got my head around it. i would have paid good money for this. cheers mate. subscribed!
XLNT job!! You really understand how skrillex makes his music!!! AWESOMEE!!
i been hunting for this sound for a while! :) thanks heaps mate..

Now by dragging the handle in the morph-field up and down you get the exact same modulation effect. If you want to automate it from within the DAW (e.g. Cubase), just find and use the "Morph Y" parameter.
Done!

That's super dynamic, reminds me of SoundMorph Dust. At some point we'll just put 2 notes, a certain patch and the song will play itself lol
As FL does not have an 'Instrument Rack' with macro controls, you have to use the X-Y Controller. Assign the parameters to these, and use the min and max knobs to set the range. It's more tedious than Ableton, but it works in the end. You won't be able to save the patch in a rack though.
Good tut, really!
And anyway, when i heard about seamless i just instantly subbed you :P
man this was so helpful to me getting better with FM8 i cant wait to get better with it
I'm sure this question has been asked before. But how did you get the "Fm8 Growl" notes? Did you have to manually put then in or was there a way for vocoder to do it?

Substitute (π/2, 1)
1 = a(π/2)(π/2 - π)
1 = -aπ²/4
a = 4/π²
y = (-4/π²)x(x - π)
y = (-4/π²)x² + (4/π)x
Now let x = π/4.
y = (-4/π²)(π/4)² + (4/π)(π/4)
y = -1/4 + 1
y = 3/4
However, sin(π/4) = √(2)/2, and √(2)/2 ≠ 3/4. Therefore, we must reject the proposition that the sine curve is parabolic.
Oh c'mon man! I thought I escaped trig. Why would you do this to me? WHYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!??????
You could have just set sin(x)=ax^2+b(x)+c and differentiated both sides to show that the rates of change of the slopes are in no way the same.
yo jaymac.... what do you have in your "Mixdown" send channel?
You're absolutely right. A DAW is like a language. There are many, and they are all vastly different, but the main purpose is to communicate meaning to others; you just need to understand the language used, and if you want to say the same thing in a different language, you must do some translation. I, for one, prefer to speak Ableton, but a similar approximation can be translated to FL ;)
Dang. All your videos are so helpful. Thanks!
Question: what exactly are you automating in the automation clip? I wasn't sure because you just said "the envelope in". Thanks! :)
Use the mapping formula in the parameter automation settings. In FL Studio, automated parameters are mapped as a function of input, f(input), where input is the value of the slope of the automation clip at a particular point in time. Basically, reducing the slope of the function will reduce the maximum output values.
TL;DR, or if you don't like math
In the mapping formula box, put a number in front of 'Input' (fraction of 1) that you want the max value to be, i.e. 0.32 for 32 in FM8's matrix.
This is a specialist right here.
Thanks!
Yeah, I'm having the same problem. Wanted to copy it and see it myself how it works. But the sound is quite different. :(
I've ended up with mapping max values to 80% of what Josh had. So it's 0.8, 0.256, 0.8, 0.8, 0.06.
Friggin' nailed it! Sounds so freakin' juicy :D
patch?
Hey man, Really great tutorial! How did you learn synthesis and sound design? I've been producing for about 4 months now and I haven't found anything on actual sound design. Almost all of the videos on synthesis that I've found are just basic stuff like filters and envelopes, etc. Could you please give some advice on this!
thats insane sounds like the orignal one AWESOME :D
Great tutorial! Thanks!What sample pack did you get the kick from or did you make it?
19 votes for a Scary Monster growl tutorial !! Wow !!
You should produce it dude..
Any ideas? Thanks
In Windows, it usually means you either have a not-so-good PC, or you aren't using an ASIO sound driver. On a Mac, I have no idea XD

+1
fred, I have the same issue sometimes... it is because you are using your primary sound driver as opposed to the ASIO driver. I know what you mean, the automation is chopped up. Notice that this is only when you are manually turning the knobs during playback... if an automation track does it (or you bounce the sound to WAV), then its continuous.
+jAyMaC how you record the voice and use the vocoder?
Maan, really good tutorial, thank you very much!! I saw on your soundcloud site only remakes... with your potential you could do so great own songs! or do you have own songs?
Random question, i use Reason 7 and have PX7 FM Synth, would you say you could recreate this on any FM Synth? As I'm trying to recreate this patch but having a hard time
thank you!
I never before dared to get into fm-synthesis but your tutorial really did it for me.
:)
great job and very much appreciated!
(now I just wished Studio One had Macro-Controllers like Ableton)
edit: found a solution, just use the fm8 morph-controller :)
so about a decade ago, skrillex did all of this and more. he was crraaazy ahead of timw
Thanks, I never really considered using the morph function. Upon closer inspection, it seems to do what Sytrus' XY pad does, except it's more versatile and remembers every change.
I'll be using this from now on; thanks :D
Great tutorial. Do you have any books you would recommend on FM synthesis or synthesis in general?
I don't get the same sound when he's mapping D into the Macro 1 :(
