My dad was a field service heavy diesel mechanic for komatsu for 30+ years, he's just turned 60 and has been on work cover for the past decade due to injuries from work, especially carrying around 100kg track presses in the bush. Great work Cody!
I'm a contractor. I'm a repairman, handyman, plumbing, hvac, electrical, etc. They're replacing key components in all sorts of products with plastic or ceramic rather than steel, I've seen this many times.
I noticed something similar with Uncle Henry knifes I have one my grandad gave me the handle scales are solid bone i got another one a few days ago and the scales are holow plastic
I work in an oil analysis lab. Good job with sample collection. You having a clean container far exceeds what I have seen. Gatorade bottles, water bottles, ziplock bags, and anything else that will hold a sample.
An old electrician tought me back in the day to put down cardboard under your work area while doing an oil change. It not only soaks up the spilled oil but it provides a softer/cleaner surface to kneel on.
I work as a truck mechanic and you would not believe how often we get wrong parts. We have am excellent parts man as well, only using GM and Ford OEM parts, but on the backend is where things get sloppy.
Thanks for adding a bunch of those fluid pitchers to my maintenance tools! I added fumoto valves to my equipment and also use a fluid extractor on some of them. I also have a oil pump to pump in oil to weird fill locations.
There’s 2 hyd. filters, the pilot filter and the in tank filter. Sometimes 3 hyd. filters. The new filter is an in tank filter. I’m not a specialist on skidsteers I usually stick to loaders and dozers, but I think you should check for moor filters on you machines.
Fuel and oil filters should never be pre-filled. When you pre-fille a filter, one would generally fill through the center of the filter. The center of the filter is the "clean" side of the filter. By pre-filling through the center, you are introducing potentially contaminated oil into the system. Couple that with no benefit because fluid systems (on Cat machines) are designed to operate properly on start-up with no oil in the filter. Maintenance is a leading source of contamination. Before you crucify me, I've worked on or around Cat machines for over 20 years and currently lead the technical support team at a Cat dealer.
Mr. Wranglerstar, I do believe that radiator and fan assembly lifts up, should have gas shocks and hinges. Also there should be a release lever somewhere in that area. I hope this helps. We enjoy watching your videos and listening to your stories.
here is my ProHo tip from years of oil changes. Even if your book says X amount of gallons/quarts of oil, always pour little by little and check what the stick says. the stick will tell it all.
If you havent already, make sure there is a minimum of 3 months of food for each person in your household. If youre on a budget, buy rice, beans, and Armour Treet cans, tuna, and get those 5 gallon water bottles from home depot. Seriously, dont wait for everything to break down... get on it now. Again, 3 months MINIMUM. Buy more if you can afford it
It is a problem we all deal with waiting on transmission lines that are on backorder for 6 months they said guess just got to add some fluid now and then to compensate the slow leak
Hey Cody, whatever happens, I find quality, attention to detail and proper care in what you do. And love with all of that too ! That's what matters. Blessings from Belgium from an old viewer !
You should check your maintenance book and see if there is a second filter location. I am not familiar with that model of skid steer, but I have honestly always been very well attended by Caterpillar parts especially if you gave them the serial number. Those machines are built and each component is basically matched to the serial number.
If this is the first 500hr service for this skid steer, you may want to change the final drives’ oil also. There would be a fair amount of break in material build up in the final drives by the first 500hr interval.
U shouldn't have to tell him anything. He knows it all!!! But make sure u have 2 chainsaws to be a man but don't have 2 drain pans or know anything about skid steers.
Yes, never trust opened oil vs the cost of an engine. I recently had a close call only saved by the introduction of the opaque oil pitcher. I had drained used brake fluid into an empty quart oil container and put it back on the shelf, thinking I would remember that it was waste and not oil. 3 months later I am doing an oil change and opened the used brake fluid container and almost dumped it into the engine. For some reason I stopped and filled the oil pitcher and noted the blue color of the 'oil' and how thin it was. I contaminated 1 gal of synthetic oil but saved contamination of an engine. Penny-wise....
yes shotty work drives me crazy! I always kinda figure it straight up disrespects my employer and the other guys that care… maybe I am wound up too tight, not sure when I’ll be able to be as relaxed as you! Thank you for the video Cody! Have fun in the snow, let us know when that hydraulic filter comes in!
I double stacked a oil gasket when u was in the service. Rushing and didn't check. Spent the afternoon shoveling contaminated gravel in 120° weather. I've never made thar mistake again. Good tip.
Have a JD 320 D the side panel comes off to access filters and maintenance items. Not sure about Cat . Nice machine, as Scotty says “oil is cheap, engines are expensive “
These last words hit really close to home. I'm in sales here in Germany and it's true I spent almost half of the day fixing crappy work, organizing and trying to fulfill the promises that other colleagues made to our customers. One of the reasons why I want to become self-employed. At least as a self-employed person, I get to keep 100% of the earnings from my hard work instead of working for an ungrateful boss.
Detroit Diesel has a program (it may only be for Detroit Diesel owners) where you send in your oil filter and they open it to see what's inside that tells you much more than just checking the oil!
Great video, we can all relate to this Besides parts being hard to get, getting defective parts is a big problem. Spending time diagnosing and replacing a part, and it not working is very confusing when the new part is expected to work.
Glad to see you drained it what was overfilled. One of our employees put around twice as much oil in our skid steer and it ruined the motor. Pretty spends screw up.
I went with a 4x4 tractor for snow, road building/smoothing, fork lift, tree extractor, grapple. I don’t know much about the skid steers but the tractor is doing well.
As a former cat pm tech, when taking an oil sample the oil should be hot and taken from the dipstick tube. That’s what cat recommends. If you catch it from the from the drain you will get bad results. Also you can clean the outer air filter but not the inner one. To make you life easier take off the Beauty cover it gives you a little more room to work.
I found it essential to warehouse stuff in advance once we finally got the stuff that works. Prevenative maintenance parts and even fluids. Most machines use almost all spec. Fluids for everything now and you can't just get them anywhere. Also nice to make stickers to note the parts , fluid specs. And volumes for quick reference or like we all dread someone else is on the equipment when something goes wrong. Needed more fuel filters on hand than anything. When things go wrong there it's really wrong.
Most loaders have two hydro filters, one spin on external canister, and one that’s in the tank. I’d bet the parts guy didn’t give you both, because they’re often replaced at different intervals, look in the hydro tank. Or better yet your shop manual
You’re exactly right about customer service and incompetence. I went to autozone to grab a gasket for my engine cooler, gave them the part number. He looked it up, went to the back and gave me the wrong one and I didn’t think twice about it til I was ready to install.
Man. Incompetence at these places is getting bad. I was told the other day by a ford dealer parts department that my 7.3 doesn't have a replaceable fuel filter. I absolutely lost it.
@Phill2tj23 a 1999 diesel powerstroke does too. The new 7.3 is a gasser. So when the parts guy asks the year first and then the model and then the engine... he can't get the new gasser mixed up with an old diesel 25 years apart.
This guy starts shooting his mouth off about the downfall and incompetence of the west after he drives 2 extra gallons of brand new motor oil through his crankcase all over the floor
Work with a 319G Deere skid loader and it looks like it is easier to do a service on. Hydraulic filter is in front of motor, below the cab and others are visible from rear access. And you can check the dipstick and fill oil while standing.
Incompetence has been a problem for longer than you think. I worked on my families farm full-time from 78 until the very end of 93 and we had that same problem getting part for maintaining our tractors and other equipment that you have had with your skid steer. It is very frustrating especially when you go in there with the right numbers for the equipment that you’re working on and they ultimately gave you at least one wrong part.
The comment towards the end really spoke to me of dealing with other people's incompetence, lack of work ethic. I switched positions at my job a year ago which involves cleaning others messes working in a warehouse and usually i don't mind it. It has some perks but management has been buckling down on the 5 of us. And I'm at a breaking point. I can only clean up so much and when people don't have any repercussions for making a spill or mess. I'm at blame for not doing enough when in fact I'm not the one damaging the product or creating the work I take care of.
But at least it gets bolted down. Had a co-worker driving a UD cabover truck, after it was serviced the cab tilted forward at a stop sign. Or at least that is what he claims, he was a bit of a tall tale type.
Thanks for the tip on the Amsoil jug. I've been using Amsoil for many years and never thought to try one. Added it to my next order, cheers. Thanks for all your videos.
I haven't been active on FB for 8 years, not sure what is going on. I just know you're a honest and truthful Man and that is better quality than a Lamborghini and more. Love your videos and stay Beloved
Regarding the low quality help in parts departments, the way places want to pay the parts guy(s), a guy can’t afford to have a one-income family. I enjoyed being in parts, but our family grew and my trad-wife stays home with our four kids. The good employees can’t afford to stay in the line of work, and you won’t see good help there until attitudes change.
Years ago at the local Lawn Implement store/shop I worked at we used a three gallon hand pump sprayer to fill lawn mower engines for service. You could buy or make your own pressure vessel to fill and do the same thing. Great video! Watch your channel occassionally.
You may have more than one hydraulic filter on that Cat loader. Bobcat uses 2 one filter is for your final final drive case drain the other is for your loader and auxiliary .

The young & upcoming engineers need to be mechanics for a few years before they are allowed to design machines & equipment. I won't hold my breath. Only 8 - 10 years to go before retirement, God willing.....
Great story about adaptive learning & teaching moments... enjoyed the transparency. Mistakes are great teachers ... and require a growing faith. Well done!
I agree. I cant even get a sandwich without my order getting screwed up every single time i get fast food. Everything I buy that has to be assembled at home gets broke in the process because everything is so cheapely made. Its so stinking frustrating!

When you had your pan full when first draining it I was wondering how that was 3 galllons. My 07 powerstroke 6.0 takes 15 quarts, that little 70hp taking 3 gallons would be a good bit! hah
Good morning,Cody! Could you post a link to where you picked up those leather shoes that you’re wearing. I know that you’ve spoken about Them in the past, but. I do not remember what video that was in. Thank you for all that you do. I hope you’re having a great week. Stay warm. Remain Dangerous.
When ordering parts check and dbl check your numbers. Especially your unit Serial and model numbers are very important. Blaming the parts guy is easy, they go by what give them not by their incompetence it works both ways. I'm a mechanic even I've screwed up on part numbers and have been humbled because of my own mistakes.
Cat will void you warranty if you have an issue with the engine and prefill oil filters. Their service very specifically say do not pre fill the oil filter.
As a heavy equipment mechanic, i second the fact we do work after hours often(gotta keep the worksites running and gotta keep the customer happy.) Its definitely appreciated to hear respect from a youtuber whom i respect so much.Thank you. Also, sorry about your bad experience, let it be know that although people are falling apart in the workplace some of us still take pride in our work.
Unfortunately the engines in these machines were not built to last. Warm them up quickly but gently and try not to live at full rpm if you can help it. Keep an ear open for the tick.
I use a fluid pump for my services. Just did a 4k service on my Volvo L350 loader last week. 55 gallon drums of 15/40 and AW46 will last a long time and save you money.
Had old TF33 aircraft engines that need oil samples burned. We called them JOAP (joint oil analysis program). Probably same principle. They burn it and look at flame and smoke to determine if there is bearing or engine material in oil and how much of it.
Be amazing to have his money, his time to do things like this... Makes you wonder what we are all doing wrong when all these creators seem to have all the time in the world, endless resources and money...
My entire job is finding, fixing, mitigating, and "repeat proofing" shoddy work. Never felt a more accurate quote in my life. But it pays for my rather blessed life so thats nice.
They have one of those oil juggs at Walmart for 10 bucks. Best purchase I've made for oil changes. Theirs has a screw lid and vent plug also. Being able to pour the perfect amount of oil and not guess is a game changer.
A lot of "anti establishment" TH-camrs were attacked like dr ken barry who helps people with starting and continuing the carnivore diet. The WEF said their biggest concern was stopping "misinformation" aka controlling the narrative to what they want.
The special Loctitle formula is working for ya...looking good. I had to buy a new battery for my car yesterday and it is twice the price from 2 years ago.....somebody is sure making money on the parts markup business. I hope you can get the right filter you need.
I learned many years ago to take the part with me if possible. get any numbers off of it and check my manual for part numbers. as well as make, model, and serial number off the machine. few parts guys actually know what you're after. they just know what the computer tells them.
My dad was a field service heavy diesel mechanic for komatsu for 30+ years, he's just turned 60 and has been on work cover for the past decade due to injuries from work, especially carrying around 100kg track presses in the bush.

The joke about France LMAO 😂
Thanks for adding a bunch of those fluid pitchers to my maintenance tools!

Here's a trick for the hydraulic filter, draw a vacuume on the system through the breather port with a shop vac.

@Wranglerstar
You would imagine that a yt channel with 2.5M subs would have a social media team, right???
My father was a spare parts business owner and manager from the 1950s thru to 1980. He could remember hundreds of part numbers. I sure do miss him!

With the amount of equipment that you have, you should consider getting a waste oil heater.

Oh, the PTO for brush hog is good too.
“I just noticed the filter is made in France, I hope it doesn’t give up on us” actually made me laugh
As an equipment mechanic that is the best-looking 500hr cat I've ever seen! I love how well you take care of your equipment!
As a former cat pm tech, when taking an oil sample the oil should be hot and taken from the dipstick tube. That’s what cat recommends. East coast guys know to double check the oil capacity of their machines.
West coast guys just go with what others guys say. 😉
That was the absolute best prime example of a "Proho" service!!!
Incompetence has been a problem for longer than you think. That catch that holds the cab up. If it fails the cab becomes the snap part of a mouse trap.
Working in industrial maintenance i find more and more engineers are making servicing the equipment more difficult like its an after thought of design
Rarely can you find someone working in a parts store that actually know the products like people that worked in parts stores 20 or so years ago.
The only good parts store around me is John Deere surprisingly
I haven't been active on FB for 8 years, not sure what is going on. I just know you're a honest and truthful Man and that is better quality than a Lamborghini and more. Love your videos and stay Beloved

Love the toupee this week. I know you'll keep the videos coming.
yeah me to . id like to see the dred knot tupee
Thanks JW for the freezer bag trick. I have the same CAT and it’s pretty tight
249d3, Engine crankcase capacity: 2.6 gal, I always prefill vertical oil filters and leave horizontal filters empty.
Years ago at the local Lawn Implement store/shop I worked at we used a three gallon hand pump sprayer to fill lawn mower engines for service. You could buy or make your own pressure vessel to fill and do the same thing. Great video! Watch your channel occassionally.
What people are waking up to how undervalued and underpaid we are as men.
If they have read some Marx & Co. they would have realized that aeons ago
Damn you can make some hella money being a pissed off ex Forest Ranger.
You may have more than one hydraulic filter on that Cat loader.
Bobcat uses 2 one filter is for your final final drive case drain the other is for your loader and auxiliary .
I was coming here to say exactly this about bobcat machines having 2 filters.
Cody, sadly you are spot on (as usual) regarding the degrading quality standards compared to yester-year. Maybe the old folks when I was young said the same thing? On a side note, I've been a professional heavy equipment mechanic for 40 years now and you are correct, things are unnecessarily packed into much tighter spaces now in the name of "sleek & efficient" redesign.
The F-up rate on daily transactions is close to 75% now. That is to say a fail to deliver perfect service, or perfect product without some fly in the ointment or something being less than what it should be. I have personally been keeping track of the F-up rate since the 1990s, when it was about 25%. It has been growing steadily since then.
I wonder if you can get a Fumoto Oil Drain Valve for your Cat… would have made quick work of that oil change and draining the extra oil.
Here you go, magicalshoes24.com/en/
Where did you get those mesh lockers on the back wall behind the skid steer there been looking for them but no luck
yea i wanna know too
Ziplock bag over the filter before removing is a good trick
2:23 what would be the upside of prematurely replacing an engine from premature wear?
For those of us who are spiritually inclined everything is falling into place 👍🤠🙏🏻
God has a plan, and it WILL be done!
It's eery to read and watch unfold isn't it? 😳
God bless you all! Act accordingly
Thanks for being an Outstanding Mentor for Us, Sir!
I really enjoyed this so much!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Straight talker. Great videos. Much respect.
You need to get a clean burn oil burner to use your used oils to heat your shop. It eliminates having to dispose of your used oil properly
Agreed
Those will burn almost everything hHa
Would it actually burn clean with contaminated oil?
@@chemicalbrucey157 probably. they have filters for them
Working in EMS, that number is closer to 80%. God bless ya Wranglestar.
Beautiful machine!
More pay! People need to take pride in what they do.
Are you sure that large filter isn't hydraulic return filter. Usually return filters are larger.
That thing looks brand new. Never really used. East coast man would approve!!
When ordering parts check and dbl check your numbers. Especially your unit Serial and model numbers are very important. Blaming the parts guy is easy, they go by what give them not by their incompetence it works both ways. I'm a mechanic even I've screwed up on part numbers and have been humbled because of my own mistakes.
that big hydraulic filter that explains the over fill of the oil so they gave you specs for a bigger machine
Ever thought about getting an oil burner for that used oil?
we need WRANGLERSTAR and PROJECTFARM to do a collab
Cat will void you warranty if you have an issue with the engine and prefill oil filters. Their service very specifically say do not pre fill the oil filter.
Good to be a member!
Same. I worked small turbines (ground support) and we had to send off oil samples at certain hours to the JOAP lab at jet shop.
As a mechanic myself to see you grab knipex and say they are the best I couldn’t agree more
Be amazing to have his money, his time to do things like this... Makes you wonder what we are all doing wrong when all these creators seem to have all the time in the world, endless resources and money...
Get creative!
Especially on brand new never used equipment. Brand mew top of the line tools just can't not be left sitting, I guess.
Cat says 249D3 engine crankcase takes 2.6G (10L) of oil.
Then look up the engine in that model and search oil capacity for that engine... 10.6 L (11.2 qt). lmao
You may think east coasters are soft, but all that snow is just another winter month here in Buffalo. I look forward to it every year!
I love the video and have been a long time fan The radiator should lift up so it is easier to clean and add oil
Pretty sure the radiator and fan lifts up giving more clearance above the engine.
You know it’s cold when Cody has shoes on
A lot of "anti establishment" TH-camrs were attacked like dr ken barry who helps people with starting and continuing the carnivore diet. The WEF said their biggest concern was stopping "misinformation" aka controlling the narrative to what they want.
I'm curious, being a Amsoil Dealer Kody. Why are not using Amsoil Diesel Oil? The best protection for your skid steer .
When you overfill the oil, just think of it as a mild oil flush!
oh man that toolbox organization is chefs kiss 😚
The special Loctitle formula is working for ya...looking good. I had to buy a new battery for my car yesterday and it is twice the price from 2 years ago.....somebody is sure making money on the parts markup business. I hope you can get the right filter you need.
I learned many years ago to take the part with me if possible. get any numbers off of it and check my manual for part numbers. as well as make, model, and serial number off the machine. few parts guys actually know what you're after. they just know what the computer tells them.
