It is technically a high school, and that's usually what most kids are obsessed with, so I'd be a little disappointed if we couldn't romance a character (though I usually always end up disliking all the options we have anyway and crushing on some unavailable character.... Looks like this time it'll be the Herbology professor)

I think too many people are getting confused with romance meaning sexual interaction. Which is far from what I think Hogwarts Legacy actually is. I can see romance being a light hearted endeavor in the game, maybe holding hands or hugging at most. Just as it was portrayed in the books and movies. I dont think it's weird at all.

I hope the game has romance! The books had it as one of its themes, the ages work perfectly well as 5th years and the game Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery also had romance options and they implemented it really well. Portkey Games also made that one and it was well received, so I don't see why they wouldn't do it in Legacy too. The game already has relationship progress, so romance would be just one step further. Please include this!

I have to agree, romance would be nice, as long as it's not sexualized, but just puppy love like we all felt going through school would be fine. i could see several smaller quests ending in a cute little date where they go out and do something related to the companion's interests. like for the huffle puff girl with a fascination over magical beasts. the final quest could be something like finding a rare beast to document it.

I am definitely in favour of a romance system in the game as I think it will add to the immersion and full experience as a Hogwarts student, the books had lots of romance and teen relationship storylines that evolved as the books did. At the end of the day older teens date in real life, teens date in fiction, its what teens do. As long as the system is done well and thoughtfully I think it would add a really interesting dynamic to all the possible friendships and storylines you come into contact with and make those connections and situations more meaningful as the story progresses so too your characters feelings progress with them.

It would add so much more to the story.
I’m not expecting this to have a “make anyone your bff” kinda like “Watch Dogs” play as anyone.
But I can definitely see something close to that.
It would be absolutely amazing to create bonds with the students you meet and through them learn different potions or secrets.
Maybe I’m reaching or asking for too much. But this game has immense potential and it would be amazing to see that become part of it.

Heres the thing, in the books while Harry was in his sixth year, he was dating Ginny. Who is a year younger. For some reason, a lot of people in the comments seem to be associating romance with a full on, Mass Effect style scene with hanky panky which, yeah, no, probably best not to do that. However, I would honestly find it MORE weird if we didnt have the option to date members of the cast. Dont forget, these kids are teenagers, people who famously think about sex a lot AND are 15-17, either nearly are actually ARE adults in the Wizarding world.
They are also the same age as the cast of the Persona games, Buffy in season 1, Percy Jackson and friends at the end of the original series and so on. There are romance subplots in fiction with characters the same age as the cast of this game and no one bats an eye. Kids go on dates, the occasionally fall in love and sometimes they fool around behind bike sheds and inside broom closets. Romance does not mean sex and I honestly think that some level of romantic subplot could add a lot to the game, if only for the replay value.
So, what could we do with it? Well, how about being able to go on dates to Hogsmead? We know that its a popular thing to do in Harrys time and I dont see how its any different back then. Maybe there could be a ball of some kind as a part of the story, which could serve as a kind of climax to the relationship arc as you take your partner along and have some fun before the sticky stuff hits the rotating blades, things of that nature.

I really want there to be a 'loyalty' mission for each companion, they were some of the best parts of Mass Effect 2. Each of those missions were tailor made to each of the companions strengths and themes, so going through them increased your bond with them. If they were romanceable, it would add to the romance on top of constantly having them in your party during regular missions. I want multiple missions like this for each character throughout the game.

On Hogwarts Mystery, I'm not yet on the dating part but there's a friendship system where depending on the level, you could unlock options to answer to the person and have different dialogues with them, or take them with you on very rare case. It doesn't affect whatsoever with the gameplay, just that leveling up your friendship with them will award you gems, or energy or wearable item that's exclusive from each character.
Dating is a new system implemented at the game, it has the same concept as leveling your friendship with them except with bigger rewards. No kissing (only on cheek) or even hugging lol it's very tamed.

As someone who is also married and with kids I was kinda thrown for a loop when you were saying people assumed "romance" automatically meant sex. From my experience, for a lasting and meaningful relationship, sex isn't really as important as people make it out to be and for a romance story it isn't really needed at all. I don't expect anything beyond a chaste kiss and it's surprising anyone leapt to thinking it'd be any further to me. What makes a "romance" story for me isn't the kinks or such but the interpersonal connection and how the characters grow together and overcome obstacles.
If they do it, and do it right, then I really hope they get have them be slow burn build ups. The main failing to me in game romances is that they only really have one path in mind where you have to be actively flirtatious and don't really account for any other kind of personality or potential drama.
Honestly? I have strong doubts that if it is included that it'll get proper attention in the game. From what they've shown it seems more like the game's going to be an adventure game with small class activities on the side rather than a school game with a cool plot on the side. Romance stories are usually only actually good when they're the main focus otherwise they tend to be rushed and a bit shallow and the game hasn't done much to advertise a social or education aspect of the game, instead they focus on the adventure even though they advertise it like the former will be a big part of the game.
    We'll see I suppose.

I think pretty much of what you said is already there in Hogwarts Mystery mobile game:
    - You can keep track of the level of friendship you have with other characters on a panel and each of them has special rewards.
    - There are special dialogues added if you have a certain level of friendship with the character.
    - You can invite a partner to a special event in the school and experience sweet moments of social interaction.
    - Depending on the friend you choose to accompany you on your adventure you will experience a slight difference in the events based on their abilities or personality, it's not that much of a difference, but it can make you regret your choice and make you want to spend more time with a certain character so you can level up your friendship with him/her to take them in your next adventure.
I think it's all good, but I hope they could make it less robotic in Hogwarts Legacy because, in the end, there isn't much of a difference between the characters when it comes to romance in the mobile game.

Hogwarts Mystery has a customizable main character just like Legacy and has optional romance with multiple students starting in the 4th year up to the 7th and it was done fairly well and very tame. Nothing major and definitely nothing sexual. There's no reason Hogwarts Legacy couldn't have done it too and there's even hints in the games files it was going to be a thing before it got taken out. All the arguments that it wasn't or shouldn't be added sound like just bs to me. There's something seriously wrong with people thinking wanting romance = wanting smut and sex. Nobody is asking for that ffs. The people who think this are obviously incels who have likely never had a relationship in their life and need to touch grass. I like light romance in stories and as long as it's done right and doesn't take up a bunch of the main story it would be fine to have it here. Would make the protagonist and companions feel less like robots imho.

I agree that it shouldn't be like Mass Effect where it is pretty sexual BUT it should be like a "first love" "first crush" sort of thing to make you feel like you are actually in this world. I am older but I also know that the characters ARE younger, but so is my character. I don't see where the problem is with romancing within this game. Maybe most people have played too many japanese dating games and just thinking of romance in a sexual way but that have nothing to do with romance at all, so where's the deal if you can have a boy or girlfriend in the game? With a bit of hugging, a bit of nice loving talk to each other and here and there a few kisses. even bullworth academy was going easier on the game with what you could do there.
I do not need any sexual content within this game but romancing would be just a nice option.

As an adult, i think they should focus more in the friendship experience... If they develop it in a good way, it is easy to add a crush part of it. But teen love is often awkard and closer to a frienship with deep conections than to a relationship... So i personally would be okay with no romance.
They could hint it tho, having some kind of saint valentine's mini quest to invite someone to a dance with many outcomes.. like choosing a random could "force" you to go on a date or help that person in a series of mundane fetch quests. Silly stuff like walk your interest to class, carry in your inventory the books, bring food or a gift... To real quests like going out to the dark forest to get some amazing flower (unless perhaps you are good in herbology and can actually grow it yourself) stuff like that..
Other option within this could be to ask your supposed best friend/companion (if there is any) to make a deeper conection with it and give more meaning to the game. You are not dating per se, but this romantic moment existed.
A third option (all can play at the same time) would be to introduce a random character that is an annoying chaser totally obssessed with your character. This character could be recurrent and both help you or mess with your missions or time. Peaking with this "Love's Night" quest. This character could be around trying to stop you from fullfilling the tasks you need to convince your true interest. Of course there should be a last option if you either fail to do the quests or not want any romantic interest and go alone to the dance/party.
This segment of the game (nothing truly big, more of a secondary/season stuff) imo could be enough to portrait teen love (the beginning of it) with all the overacting, the embarrasment and the tedium-excitement that comes with it without making it a big point of the game itself. It would be part of the inmersion part of the game to breathe from the heavy action/harsh main plot. They could add gosship after this point, where npcs might have some lines talking about what you did. "I can believe he dated Smith, what a weirdo". "Aww why don't you ever carry my homework like "blank" did for Smith?". Stuff like that.

I think a relationship system would be great in this game. For romance, friends, enemies, etc. So you don't need to have some kind of sexual gameplay, but it would be harmless to have affection points so you can go out on a "date" at higher grades, like walking around, or like having a honey beer in the pub. Like it happened in the film itself. You don't need more than hugs, hand-in-hand things, maybe some kiss and that is all. Because it would be a fun ending, If you can choose someone who can become your steady relationship, just like it happened in the movie.

I play Hogwarts Mystery, and they have Romance built in for Years 4-7. There are several activities and side quests, featuring some sort of event (such as a Ball), where you can ask one of your friends and gain Romance points. At the end of Year 5, you can choose to go exclusive with one you've built enough points with, and they officially become your boyfriend or girlfriend. The interactions are very wholesome and cute, and it feels engaging while still being age appropriate. For anyone who's played Mystery, you'll know it's absolutely possible to do romance options tastefully, and I think Legacy has even more of an opportunity to do them well with more side quests which aren't locked behind timers or micro-transactions. Romance is a must have for Legacy in my opinion, and I personally enjoy wholesome teen romances more, via stuff like Heartstopper rather than Riverdale.

It could work. In the books it plays a major part, in fact love / romance are key driving motives for many characters and events. Sadly the publisher is likely wanting to avoid controversy about this aspect of the wizarding world and not do anything with it. Mods could in theory pick that up, but two problems arise from that.
    1. All dialogue in the game is beautifully voiced. Any quest or romance mod would be subpar compared to the rest of the game by virtue of not having the voice actors reading the lines. Unless you somehow either get them to do it or do some crazy AI voice stuff, any content mods will likely tank.
    2. If you let modders get to it, it's likely that the mods that would come out would not be about the innocent first romantic steps in a young wizard's life, but about smut. I have seen relationship mods for so many games and most only have very few lines of actual dialogue followed by more or less well-animated sex scenes.

In each game forum or discord community that I am part of, if the game has nudity or considers it, the Americans raise hells flames to butcher it and attack the devs. They are right there, asking how that can be and why the devs allow it. Well, guess what, WE DO NOT CARE about what the Americans think about nudity, romance or sex in games. If they are bothered that much, avoid it or simply don't play the game not that hard to do but don't ruin the fun for 80% of the community just because you are bothered... that is laughable.
And second, why do you care how other people play their games? Do you really think those creeps will stop doing whatever they do in RL just because they cannot do it in-game? That is laughable and childish to think. I prefer them doing it in the game because first I cannot see it, and second, it protects the real children, so to speak. With your blind hatred, you push such peeps to do those things in RL instead of in-game.
With their mindset, Americans should move to the modern ages already when it comes to games. Another thing to keep in mind when it comes to romance in this game is is that it takes place in the late 1800's. Romance was handled differently back then. Especially if we can create our characters to be muggle-born. Their approach to romance would be very different. It's a time period where arranged marriages were still a thing. Whether or not that applies to the Wizarding World, I don't know.
So, building on what you said, there could be events where we can try to court a fellow student who is engaged to someone else, and a stealth mission is us trying to go out on a date without anyone else finding out about it. Where things can go horribly wrong in a comedic way.
I also think that the Persona character system can also apply, but is a House system. The students we interact with most will be from our own house, after all. There could be social interactions where we have to take time away from our House-mates to meet up with friends/love-interests from other Houses. If there is a day/night cycle, different clubs and such it can work that weekends at Hogwarts would be our time for socializing and for character beats to happen, and if you miss them then you miss them.
EDIT: Also, we know that Love Potions are a thing. Harry had them kind of thrown at him in the 6th book from Romilda Vane, which resulted in Ron getting dosed with an expired love potion, increasing its potency. Tom Riddle's mother dosed his father with love potions. We also know that Mrs. Weasley drugged Arthur with a love potion to get him to notice her, something that, I think Ginny, calls her out on.
I think it'll be fun dealing with a love potion romance quest. Whether we get dosed, the person we're courting gets dosed, or if we dose them. It'll raise ethical questions, certainly, but would make for one of those moral choices the developers mentioned.

Hogwarts is in the UK. The age of consent in the UK is 16 so the last 2 years of the school a sexual relationship would be totally legal. Also the UK is more than 50 percent athiest and we have no problem with sex pre-marriage. Indeed marriage is total optional in the UK.

Relationships can be everything from a choosen family to the one you truley love or despise with all your might. The thing about making romance playable in a game about underaged kids is to make it respectfull. Kids do a LOT of stuff we adults dont see/hear about so while it should be there, it should not go the more adult way but keep to perhaps a few dates, a dance and so on. Its a delicate dance to tread and not something I am capable of doing myself. Just saying, relationships is REALLY importantm be it a hatefull one or a friendly, family or even love relationship.

In Hogwarts Mystery they did something pretty interesting where you can choose 3 different characters to go on a date with. In my case, I'm playing as a girl and I could choose between my animagus boy friend, a potions master girlfriend or my arch nemesis, who is also a girl. There are a number of videos of people playing H Mystery on TH-cam. I'm sure there are also specific rules as for any side quest in that game. Takes a loooong time and effort to accomplish something on the higher levels.

Maybe in this game it could boost your spell learning ability or put you in a better mood more likely to be lucky or observant or something. Or your maybe boost resistance to evil spells or something. 🤷🏼‍♀️
