Embrace the flaws and uneven tension. Rest assured that machine knit stockings in the 1840s had PLENTY of both. As always, another fantastic video!

I'd be interested in the math and engineering that goes into knitting from your books. I've read and seen demonstrations on sewing shirts and pants, and it's still "magic" how measurements are turned into a product.
The flat and 3D printed knitting machines are always very cool!
    Thank you!!

Congratulations! Great job! I knew you would persevere with the knitting machine and cotton stockings. If you ever add a ribber to your knitting machine, you could do the circular bit on that set up. I do.
    Thanks for sharing.

My pandemic craft was learning duplicate stitch for darning all of my holely SmartWool socks.
I've found that the DMC cotton embroidery floss is a disaster, probably for much the same reason that your knitting machine didn't like cotton yarn.
The Laine St. Pierre wool floss has worked well for me on more delicate knits. I've also found wooly nylon thread for sergers to be useful for darning holes in my daughter's cotton socks.

I think these knitting machines, as well as your actual use of them, are nothing short of magic! This is the second video this week showing the use of a knitting machine. I've dropped several hints to family members that I need one. 🤭

Love the initials my daughter and I are both H C so would need different colours, also reminded me of colour coding underwear as a teenager, as mum ,me and my sister all wore the same size😅

Beautiful work! I Love seeing videos like this! I find that some of my american dutchess shoes make those stains on my socks too. I figure that people really won't see my socks so I kinda don't care but I did try to soak it out too.

I am hand knitting the stockings in cotton and dpn 1.25 mm after your pattern

Wow! 1.25mm? I'm knitting a pair of 1940s lace stockings on 2.25mm flats and thought that is taking forever.

I absolutely adore the sweater you are wearing. It is such a lovely soft grey and the detailing along the button band is great. What pattern did you use?

A yarn cleaning tip is baking soda Peroxide and dish soap Let that sit for a little bit more than an hour rub together run under the water and it comes around out there

I enjoyed the editing of the time lapse shots at the machines. It is fascinating to see the work develop. I will have to keep my eye out for the knitting math and mechanisms book. Not that I knit myself, but I just enjoy old mechanisms. Ok, sometimes I like math too... 😁

I think they are absolutely beautiful with the lace on the top! Also love the beading initials on the vintage ones 💖 you mention a few times clocks for the stockings, I know you decided against them, but what are clocks for stockings? 😅

Thanks for the great knitting tips! I have a lot of number 10 crochet cotton, I guess I won’t be doing socks! Maybe dish cloths? I haven’t tried the patterning cards yet but maybe curtains would work with the cotton. My machine is a knitmaster from 1968 and I am pretty new at this.

I think the stockings came out great! The historical ones may look neater because a) the guage is smaller and the yarn is a smaller ply, b) they probably had more advice since they were stockings of the time and other women were embroidering them too, and c) they likely had more training in embroidery, since that was another common skill of the era. Comparison is the thief of joy. - T Roosevelt.
Was the changed guage on you mum's foot section still comfortable to wear?

Beads on stockings? I have beaded socks before and I may need to bead some stockings in future. Thanks for the idea.

I was wondering why you didn’t use the stitch you use on the toe or a stitch like it, so the back seam would be more stretchy and invisible?

The kitchener stitch only really works horizontally. Vertically, you need to use a different stitch.

The bit about the clocks colors clashing?
Silly rabbit ... stockings are for crazy!
Skirts went to the floor "in the olden days"
Whether you were knitting your own, or (depending on the price) buying them, there were stripes, scrappies, eyelets or 'does NOT go with this dress!'

I'm not sure I quite understood why you didn't do the whole stocking on the CSM to begin with? Can someone explain?

    • @MiljaHahto
      @MiljaHahto ปีที่แล้ว

She had 60 stitches around the ankle - and the larger wheel (what was the term?) on the CSM has 72. I don't think 72 is nearly enough stitches above the knee in that yarn.
