- With less than a week to go to Halloween I decided to knit a Vintage spider sweater (with an extra surprise!). It was a bit chaotic and the fit is off, but it is still cute!

The glow-in-the-dark accent was the perfect touch to this cute sweater! For a procrastinator, you are super quick! Even with a machine, I could never finish a knitting project in that amount of time. Well done!

Your spider sweater is enchanting, and I’m really impressed with how well the patched-in spider motif worked. I think I’d have used duplicate stitch, because the thought of integrating a patched piece of knitting over a hole fills me with terror. But hey, it’s a Halloween sweater, so the process is supposed to be scary, right? 🕸🕷🕸
I, too, thought that duplicate stitch might be a viable alternative. Also, it would have added a little dimensionality, which could have been quite effective. (Although, perhaps a bit creepy; but, hey, isn't that the point of a Halloween spider sweater?)
I like how much you're using your knitting machine in the last few videos! So few people have one but I think they're definitely becoming more popular again :~)
The date stills fits, since today is All Hallows day, and many countries celebrate people who have past. I love the sweater, both you and RetroClaude are the reason I decided to pick up knitting again after 4 years
Yaaaay glow in the dark! It looks so great, that style of side seam turned out a well-shaped shirt.
The glow in dark twist was such a great idea! The sweater turned out great. I myself would have made the front just like the back and embroidered the spider to it, there's a way to do it where it looks like a knit stitch but I don't know if it would have been any faster. I really like how that style of sweater with the motive on the top portion all the way around looks like I should give it a try

It looks fantastic. You could do a spiderweb lace at the bottom to make it a little longer. And "Procrasticrafting" is a brilliant word to describe what I do regularly 😁

On the hem, purl one row where you want your hem to fold up. Your hem will fold much flatter.
What a novel idea to use glow in the dark yarn details for the Halloween sweater! Love the spider! Spiders are mascots to knitters, weaver's and especially lace makers, like us!

I'm not sure if anyone else would be interested, but could you maybe explain exactly how punch cards work for patterning on the knitting machine?
A very short answer. The punchcard instructs the machine to move needles between to positions. In Position 1 color 1 is knit. In position 2 color 2 is knit. You can also do this by hand but, it's very cumbersome. The electronic knitting machines work the same way but, your not restricted to patter the size of a punchcard. Your "card" can be the whole width of the machine bed.

Hi, this is the first video of yours I've seen since the algorithm recommended you and this was fascinating to watch. I've never seen a knitting machine like this one before so that was really cool to see. Besides that I really liked the glow-in-the-dark twist. Overall this was a very fun and informative video, good job!
I love this sweater. One of my goals for 2023, and one of my treats for graduating, will be knitting myself a Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas sweater. I love this time of year and I would love to be able to celebrate it with crafty goodness. This spider sweater is now my favorite for the Halloween sweater.
Beautiful work! Here’s a little tip: If you’re casting on with waste yarn, there is a much faster method than e-wrap: bring every other needle out into knit position (you should have a comb-tool with your machine, if not get one), knit one row, bring the rest out and knit. I’m working at my very first sweater with my machine right now. Wish me luck :-)

That is so fun!! I had no idea that glow in the dark thread was available. Will have to look into this for next year. My grandson will be very impressed if I can make him something that glow in the dark!
Turned out so lovely, and I'm so inspired! I usually bring out the knitting machine near the end of the year to make gifts for folks, might have to make a gift for myself!
A suggestion for the hems, for the last row before moving from the scratch yarn to the actual working yarn, use a slick nylon thread, I have some fishing thread, and you can just pull it out without any cutting! I use the same scratch yarn all the time thanks to this trick!
For basic colourwork, you might also be able to use different needle positions and changing settings on the carrige so that some use the black thread, some use the white. It would just mean only moving the needle positions as you work! It would give you the floats that you mentioned not wanted to deal with though. If you're machine can do punch card colour work, it's probably got this feature.

Not even two minutes in... I am terrified and impressed that you CHOSE you use more black in a pattern then needed🤯. I would've uses a purple or something for the background, you are faaaar braver then I.
I suppose using a machine makes it a bit less scary.
Hee hee, this was a fun project before it was glow in the dark,now it's just awesome! I love how these come together, I gave up on knitting years ago so I'm always impressed when there's more than a colour change, even crocheting I don't have a great concept of how to do colourwork...

I also just got a standard guage knitting machine that I've been learning about, and I'm also having trouble getting guage! Seems like the garment comes out smaller than my guage swatch says! I've even left my guage swatches to rest off the machine for 24 hours to let it relax after being weighted, which helped, but didn't 100% solve my problem.
I do really like your solution for the spider, though. Clever work around for your short time! 👏

Was it Elizabeth Zimmerman who said to measure your favorite fitting sweater and use those for knitting new one. That way you can tell how much ease you are comfortable in. I like loose especially the upper arms. And got to take into account the amount of stretch too. Very cute spider sweater.

Scary stories... I dropped a stitch in the ribbing of the back piece of a jumper I made. And I didn't notice until I finished the whole jumper and put it on (the back piece was the first thing I did)
Extremely cute! Pressed for time like you were, I would have just knit the front fully on the machine in the black and white stripes, embroidered the legs just like the webs, and needle felted the spider motif on there (either roving or attaching a crochet motif). That flap was a clever solution in the moment, though!

KnitFactoryImpl has some great tutorials and patterns for machine knitting, she recreated a sweater Bill Gates wore in i think the 80s. Also wonderful video! I like your reveals, and your outcomes always look so professional.

Your knitting machine is so cool. I was given a very obscure one and no manual, so I don't even know if I have all the pieces I need to make it work. Hopefully at some point I can concentrate on it to see if I can figure it out. Isn't the gauge pretty limited on the machine?
As someone who's also so Ng practice garments on my knitting machine, I've heard you need a very large swatch and then get your gauge from the middle of the work. Also, it seems intarsia would have been a better choice or embroidering the spider on with duplicate stitches. That hole was terrifying for me.

I have a question about the machine knitting- i have a piece that i just got off the knitting machine that is also finished with the waste yarn, and i now have to remove the waste yarn and somehow cast it off and being a beginner i have no idea what to do... also, it's a gauge 7 machine and i used two very thin yarns together, i'm afraid it will completely unravel on me... can you tell how you did it on your second sleeve?

The sweater looks wonderful. I had a knitting machine like that, but hardly used it. The knit pieces are very beautiful, though. Just asking, why did you not embroider the spider afterwards? Why knitting it in? Now you had to patch it in with all it’s difficulty? In Dutch we call it a ‘maassteek’ which translates into mesh stitch but I do not know if that’s the just name. It is embroidering on the allready knit piece by following the V’s from the stockinette stitch. Quite a lot quicker than knitting it in in a seperate patch…..but that’s me.
How did you choose which knitting machine to buy? Or did you inherit one?
