This whole sweater was a wild ride from start to finish! Showing all the things that caused issues and frustration is so important for other folks, really appreciate this video.
The Answer Lady Knits has the best videos for repairing those accessories yourself… you have to watch out for springs in them going sproing…. it’s a technical term 😊
I used to think I was patient. If that were my project, everything would be out the window by now lol. You have my admiration. I bow to your superior patience levels. Either that or you are insane. Take your pick. Wonderful end product, but.....
Nutella in the neck opening of the sweater was super cute 😊 And the sweater itself is super cute too! My grandmother had a knitting machine but it was sold when she died. I'm sad I was too young to understand the value of the machine then. I remember once she wanted to show me how to use it but she was already so demented she didn't know how 😔
I've been waiting for you to get the ribber attachment! I bought my knitting machine in July because of your channel and KnitFactoryImpl, and i was Very excited when i saw this video alert. I've just finished tour 1940's leaf sweater on my machine, with a punchcard i made. Happy knitting!
The sweater looks great! Don’t feel too disheartened. I have been machine knitting for almost 20 years and to this day, there are times I forget to set something, or check the yarn is threaded correctly, I go across and woosh! Al drops on the floor. It happens to the best of us, we are only human. Regarding the sleeves, you would of had to start large and decrease, to do that on the machine and probably need the use of a garter bar to easily make the multiple decreases across the first few rows. However, whichever method works for you and the great thing about machine knitting, is you are able to combine hand knitting and machine knitting. Many machine knitters are typically prolific hand knitters too. Keep at it, it’s lots of fun! Well done. X
The sweater is darling! The 1930s puff sleeves and silhouette always look so romantic and soft. I love it! And what a gorgeous choice of yarn -- despite all the challenges is posed. Well done to you for sticking with it and learning so much! I'm excited to see your next big project!
I swear I have a photo of my grandma (somewhere in a photo album) wearing a VERY similar sweater and hair style! Now I must go look for it lol (my grandma was born in 1918 so she might have actually had a similar sweater)
That is such a memory evoking noise. Mum used to borrow a knitting machine to knit our school jumpers, which as kids we appreciated so much more than hand knitted ones 🙄. I’m sure her hands and fingers appreciated it too.
I have a Brother chunky machine with a ribber. A 260 I think? It’s in the attic. Makes me sad to have lost my skills. I loved machine knitting. Before I had my ribber my late mum would knit my ribs down for me from the body of the garment. Happy memories. 😢
Whenever possible cast on with waste yarn and knit the body of your garment then re hang your stitches and knit your rib downwards. I always did my cast off on waste yarn then cast off with a latch tool.
As a fellow new machine knitter, I'm really comforted that it's not super easy for you either 🙈 But the joy of machine knitting is making mistakes and fixing them and loving the final piece, even if it's not perfect because no one else can tell anyway! I really love this vintage sweater and the recycling of salvaged yarn is so unique and beautiful.
Oh you were so close to crying a couple of times. But you perseverance is admirable. I love love love the sweater and miiiight just make it myself. Great video ❤
Very cute! Love the sweater and I am enjoying this capsule wardrobe series. I hate sewing knitting together because I don’t do it well but I really like how the garter stitch border made the rounded corners look. I am always interested in the machine knitting. I wanted one when I was younger but I can see now I wouldn’t have been able to manage it. I love watching you apply your engineering skills to the complicated machine.
I was just thinking, you could always do the sleeves in reverse. When you get up to the part where you were to attach more and stitches and increase, you would still do that but would do decreases instead. You have to move stitches over to fill the gaps, but it's very doable. Decreasing is almost always easier on a machine than increasing
This video is such a coincidence as I set up my knitting machine and ribber today to knit a new sweater! You are totally right about the machines being heavy, I didn’t screw my clamps down properly and both the machines fell on me and bruised my leg when I tried to hold it up oops 😅
I absolutely love how you share the whole journey. It makes me feel so much better about how much I mess up with my knitting projects and other stuff and have to redo stuff! Things that are worth it take time, sometimes I forget that when a lot of the time you just see people with perfect finished products and don't see the journey... Where could I find this sweater pattern? It's so wonderful!
Ribbers can be scary! Mine came with my machine that I bought through a chance encounter. I had 3 young kids, and only used the MB for a few years. Finally, I had my husband set it up-- he's a mechanical engineer LOL. My 327, you need to push up the RB a smidge to get it to latch but it does stay. With my bulky, I had to get the RB separately and it was not shipped properly, had some damage, and was missing some things. The main carriage had always had some issues, and then i broke something and now it can only tuck in one direction. I never get to use them because of a cramped room. Maybe someday. I used to blog all about it, going back to 2006!
Well done. Beautiful sweater. May i offer you some friendly advice, in case you want to try the sleeve technique again in the future? On the row before your increases, increase your stitch size a couple of clicks on the carriage. Obviously, you'd need to swatch it, to find the best settings for the yarn you're using. And i dare say, the increased stitch size will block out, or be unnoticeable. Good luck; there is a steep learning curve when using a knitting machine, which is amplified when you include the ribber. But stick with it, as you know, it saves alot of time and produces high quality results.
Nutella poking her head through the neck opening was sweet. As someone researching knitting machines to buy a second hand one, it was very helpful to see you using a ribber with yours.
This is something I've always wanted, cuz I'm new and VERY slow at knitting, but now I know I can't. There's no way I know enough about knitting to fix these issues by hand 😅
I had no idea how complicated knitting machines were! I thought they just whizzed through panels (based off of no evidence 🤣) this was very educational. But look what a gorgeous sweater you made with it.. it's really beautiful 😍 worth the struggles I'm sure. Thanks for sharing the reality of the knitting machine chaos
Utterly gorgeous. Quite, quite beautiful. Your perseverance and patience are amazing. You are so, so clever. It looks like I have the same set up as you. I’ve had both beds for several years but only in the last couple of months summoned up the courage to attach and start using the ribber. I too struggled to attach it and every now and again I have to loosen the screw on the right and push the ribber fully back in. I also have the transfer accessory, it kind of works but is a bit unreliable so I prefer to transfer by hand. I can’t get over how beautiful your sweater is.
I love your sweater, super cute! Brought back memories when my mom used to knit on a knitting machine. She brought a Knittax knitting machine from Germany, but she had an attachment that made patterns in two colors I think.
Wow, I do not think that I would have the patience needed to work on a knitting machine. I admire you so much, and I appreciate your video. I am a huge fan of your work, and I will stay subscribed.

Your discipline and dealing with frustration when it comes to problems is so inspiring. This sweater is gorgeous. Fantastic. So pretty and basic. Love it! Now I want to knit one myself. Yes, I have a knitting machine (knittax am2) AND I have a kind of ribber. It's not a full ribber, because it only works with every other needle from my Main bed. But it can do ribbing. Thank you so much for sharing your process. ❤
I absolutely love your problem-solving/troubleshooting inclusions in this! I've been looking for a knitting machine for myself to speed up using all this fingering weight yarn I have, but my struggle right now is having enough space! I long for the day where I have more crafting room, but in the meantime, I've really enjoyed living vicariously through your makes. @@TracyKMainwaring Yeah I got mine from a transplant who decided she won't knit sweaters in Florida after getting here lol. Its just not something that was as popular here back in the hey day of knitting machines, so at least in Central Florida they are rare. Most people retired here, so they got rid of any extraneous stuff before moving here. And at the moment I just don't have the money to try to buy one online. So I wait :)
I would love if you could add the link in the description to the resource you used to identify the accessories that work with different vintage knitting machines. I couldn't see it in there but if it's listed somewhere else and I didn't spot it I apologise! p.s. The method of seaming the shoulders and knitting the sleeves on flat is also my favourite technique for handknitting sweaters - only having that one lovely long seam from cuff to hem is such a dream! Thank you for another excellent video 💖
Well worth the big effort, it is beautiful! I have a standard gauge machine from 1968 but I don’t think any Ribber will work with it. Someday I’ll get a newer one with a Ribber.
I too have a standard gauge knitting machine with ribber that I'm just learning to use, so I'm so excited to give it a try! I'm also looking forward to how you disassemble and repair the auto-transfer and auto-bind-off machines you got, as those would be amazing time savers. They'd also reduce the amount of time I spend in goblin mode hunched over the machine manually manipulating stitches! 😆 Also, I saw at 24:14 that you're using a whip stitch to seam up the sides. I also have tried this seaming method, but I personally prefer the crochet slip-stitch chain joining method. I think it comes out looking a little cleaner on the inside and outside, and is similar to the chain stitch you remove when you're disassembling factory-knit sweaters.
The sweater is lovely. Do you think adding a bit more twist to that yarn would have made it a bit stronger? I've heard that yarn can loose some of it's twist when it has been reclaimed, and that you can run it through a spinning wheel to add a bit more twist.
What a journey! Thank you for taking us with you on all the highs and lows of it. The sweater turned out absolutely lovely, and I can't wait to see what you make next on your machines.
I would love a video of how you adjust a pattern to your size. One of the reasons I’ve not tried to knit anything for myself yet is because I don’t think it will fit my bust :(
Question: Would I need be an advanced knitter in order to know how to use a machine like this one? I am a super, super slow knitter and that is why I just can't finish anything I start. It would be great if I could get something like this and be able to make some items faster. I love all the sweaters you have made, they are exactly what I would love to make.
How sad is it that I saw the preview and said "Oh that's a Silver Reed ribbing bed" FYI regarding the accessories. 90% of the time the issue is old grease that's hardened. I'm guessing once you take them apart, clean and relive them they'll work fine.
That’s so gorgeous Could you do a video about how to translate patterns from Hand knit to machine? And with the guages? And I’m looking forward to seeing you work on the accessories. My rib transfer carriage doesn’t work and I’d like to see a bit of the process.
I've had a Toyota KS901 since the 80s... I have the ribber and the tilt table... The whole shebang. Not used it since early 90s 😂 no space to set it up. 🙄
I don’t have the add on but I did some ribbing on this one cardigan (never finished it) 🤔 this makes me want to pick up my (grandmothers) knitting machine from my parents place again 😅

That came out so beautifully!! Your perseverance is inspiring. I’m excited to see what comes next
Beautifully done.
SO cute! Excellent job!
That is a beautiful sweater!!
That sweater is so cute. And I find the machine and attachments fascinating!
Oh how I miss my knitting machines!!! Have fun with your knitting machine! Where did you find that list of machines and their accessories?
LOL the moment Nutella joined you, I laughed out loud. She is precious
How sad is it that I saw the preview and said "Oh that's a Silver Reed ribbing bed"
FYI regarding the accessories. 90% of the time the issue is old grease that's hardened. I'm guessing once you take them apart, clean and relive them they'll work fine.
That’s so gorgeous
Could you do a video about how to translate patterns from
Hand knit to machine? And with the guages?
And I’m looking forward to seeing you work on the accessories. My rib transfer carriage doesn’t work and I’d like to see a bit of the process.
I've had a Toyota KS901 since the 80s... I have the ribber and the tilt table... The whole shebang. Not used it since early 90s 😂 no space to set it up. 🙄
You did GREAT!!!!!
It is a very cute sweater! I'm sorry it cost you so much trouble and pain.
Beautiful! Great job!
It is crazy seeing a sweater come out the bottom of the machine
The emotion when it worked the first time...
Such a cute sweater!!!
What is your main knitting machine, the SK280? Or the 840? Do you use the patterning at all?
I don’t have the add on but I did some ribbing on this one cardigan (never finished it) 🤔 this makes me want to pick up my (grandmothers) knitting machine from my parents place again 😅
