One suggestion for the rubber cement compound, I put a liberal amount on the whole strip just before inserting into the tire. This helps bond the folded section to itself and where it contacts the hole of tire. Doesn’t hurt to apply some to the plug as shown in the video, but most of what you apply there is going wear off in a short amount of miles driving on it.

This video just saved a Cab Driver! His company has no roadside assistance! So I helped him try to replace the tire. One lugnut was rusted. Luckily he had this kit and a mini tire air machine! We watched this video and 30 min later he drove off! Dirty and tired, but safe! Thank you!!
My dad taught me this a few years ago when I ran over a screw! It's been invaluable to know, and I recently sent this video to a friend because their tire has been leaking air hardcore!

Before you ream the hole, you want to find the direction of the injury so that your not actually making it worse by forcing the reamer through uninjured tire. Follow the channel of the hole. For example, if the hole is 45° you don't want to force the reamer through at 90° because you'll be compounding wound channels and making it even worse. Coat the plug material with the rubber cement just before inserting it into the tire. It'll act as a lubricant and make insertion much easier while providing for a better plug. By the appearance of the ozone bead cracking, this tire should be replaced anyway.
Thanks for watching & we appreciate you sharing your advice. Any & all helpful info is greatly appreciated Eddie. Hope all is well with you and your family. 😎👍🔧🔩

I used this product a few weeks ago without removing the tire. I jacked up the vehicle and followed the instructions and let the glue dry for a few hours before refilling the tire and removing the jack. Put on about 500 kms and so far so good!
@@raulakh123 they will last forever. Tire shops are using this "old" method again due to tires/rims having tire pressure monitoring systems on them - taking tire off there is a risk on some to ruin the TPMS sensor
@@adamglockl - and they still charge the same price for a flat repair whether it’s a plug or tire removal - go figure!🙄 That’s why I started just doing it myself
Worked perfectly. I added some of the tips mentioned in the comments such as using a small drill bit for a tiny puncture so the reamer could penetrate, and using the supplied cement glue on the inserter to make it easier to insert. Tires are doing great now. Thank you!

I wasted several strips trying to force them through the tire. You need to inflate the tire to at least 10 psi or close to that so the tire gives you resistance when forcing the tool and strip in. I had an inflator in my garage and just put a peace of paper and my finger against the hole as I was filling up the tire with air. Once it got to about 10 psi, I quickly moved on to plug the tire. Went right in. Great video by the way.
Thanks, just did my first one and this gave me the added confidence to do it! I will add that you should probably put the rubber cement on the entire plug before you push it in to the hole like one of the other commenters had mentioned.
Ay bro you got straight to the point and explained everything thoroughly. As a 24 year old Man who never had a Dad to teach him these things, I want to say thank you.

5/3/2021: I just followed your method, modified, and so far (drove 30 mph on bumpy road for 2 miles), checking air pressure, and soap-sudsing the plug for tell-tale bubbles, the repair to a leaking tire (losing 2lbs every 30 minutes) appears to hold. This was on the RR tire (2015 Civic LX). I jacked the car up, then rotated the tire until I saw a screw head. Marked the area. Then used emergency brake to hold the tire from moving, and started work. I used a phillips-screwdriver and pliers to remove the screw. The air came out. My difficulties: first, it took a big framing hammer to pound the reamer in, after which the reamer would go in an out OK with pushing and pulling by hand. I used Rubber Cement on both the plug material and on the end of the insertion tool. Then I couldn't get the damn plug in, even with pounding the insertion tool with the hammer, so I sliced another piece of insertion material down the middle and used half-a-thickness in the insertion tool; and THAT finally could be pounded in a couple inches. I just pulled it out like you're supposed to. We'll see if it holds. 5/9/21. The car has now been driven daily for 6 days, plus at least 60 mph, and no leakage from the tire. This is the second time I have successfully used a tire-plug kit to plug leaking tires, while the tire is still on the car.

As long as it’s not on the sidewall you can patch almost any tire unless it’s completely destroyed. Most shops won’t patch it outside of the center for “liability reasons” but you can still do it yourself. Most people go awhile with these plugs in their tires

If you use the sealant that came with while your pushing the plug in it will make it much easier, with practically no resistance and also the sealant will seal it from the inside as well. Thanks for the video and God bless

One suggestion I would have is to NOT push the projectile(nail, screw etc) farther into the tire, but rather try to pull it out with a pair of needlenose pliers.. it could damage sensitive sensors or disrupt the balance of your wheel while you're on the highway. or even possibly re-puncture the tire somehow in another in another spot..its far fetched but possible
Thanks for the video saved $267 when Firestone said it’s repairable but they wouldn’t repair it because of tread height (their BS policy) but they would gladly sell me 1 new tire for $267.00. Too bad I got my 2 rear ones (same tires) for $330.00 all in. That was from a dealership (the irony 🤣) Won’t go back to FS ever again.

Also just left Firestone, they said the same thing but cuz the location of the hole {which was same as this video} they couldnt plug it. Liability reasons.
Thank you so much for the video! I was on the highway and got a puncture in my tire. 😱 I was able to get off the next exit and I actually temporarily plugged it with a little piece of rubber that I found in my car and some Gorilla glue. It actually held all the way home and was still holding the next morning when I was able to get a real plug!🔌🚙
You are very welcome, we really appreciate you sharing your experience. Incredible job on your behalf using the resources available & plugging hole with that piece of rubber to get home. Hopefully many stress free days ahead for you. 😎👍
What I do too. Pull it out. Quickly shove it in and keep air in place. Tank her out and then plug it. Even will use rubber cement after. And then snip off any extra. Idk it's the way I was taught at the dealer years back. Just gotta hope you dont have too big of a hole because you will want to double plug it and know deep inside you shouldn't. Sidewall though, no hope. Wouldn't ever touch someones tire if the leak was even too close to it. Not worth the risk.

A lot of people use a drill bit on a drill and it work great. And you need to pull out the screw not just push it in. Flat head screwdriver and a needle nose pliers. Should always be kept with the plug kit. When you buy a complete kit they actually come with a cheap pliers and screwdrivers. Never push the object into the tire.
Thank you! Just what I needed to fix my truck tire. The local tire shop said were unable to repair it due to the thread tolerance. It’s not bad, will need tires before fall. So, I’m gonna give it a whirl 👍
I like to do this repair instead of removing the tire to repair it properly. Saves me a lot of time and money. I get nails near on the outer or edge of the tire and that's where tire shops will tell you they cannot repair the tire and require you to buy a new tire.
A tip for those who struggle with inserting the plug- if you're having trouble putting it in place, a bit of dish soap (preferably Dawn dish soap) can fix that right away.

The glue he mentions is a hardening compound but paint it on the plug this makes it slimy and easy to push in. The tool he used the clean the hole is called a reamer. 3-5 times all the way in and out is plenty.
Thanks for the vid. I had heard it was easy to do but never needed it until this weekend. It was kind of tough getting the reaming tool through the tire. I ended up drilling a larger hole with my drill. It could have just been where the hole was located in the tread. But all in all an easy fix to all those wondering. Thanks again.

Most plugs are RTV (room temperature vulcanizing) and don't require rubber cement. However the rubber cement won't harm anything and does make the plug easier to push in.
For all the people saying they recommend or need to add glue to the plug prior to sticking it in.... that is not necessary. I've plugged probably 10 tires in the last 8 years and I know of others who have done way more than that who don't put glue on. Also read a comment on another video of someone who owns or has worked at a taxi cab company and does not suggest you waste your time and money on adding glue. It is redundant to do so with this plug kit. The plug material once cut flush with the tread and driven for miles will seat it in place perfectly and the hot tires after spinning for so many revolutions will form the material and bond it to the rubber tires. Thats your glue... the plug itself. Nuff said.
Good morning ☕️ we really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. We feel the same way, glue is an added bonus for many that are interested in applying it however after installing countless amounts of plugs to tires over the decades….grabbing the glue and applying it…just fades away as an option. 😎👍🧰☕️
Good stuff. In addition to the comments about being quick with the plug and reamer, the Slime kit I got also came with some rubber cement. The plug is already super sticky, but the cement coating all over the plug can only help.

YES. The enclosed Rubber Cement is to be applied to the Sealing Strip and around the hole before inserting the Strip into the tire -- Cement acts as a lubricant to help the Strip go in -- and as a sealer when the Strip is in place. Notice that the vehicle is in dire need of a Wheel Alignment. ;>(

@Peter Anagnostidis I plug my passenger car tires all the time. If it's in the shoulder it'll last 6 months and air will slowly leak out. Most tire shops won't do it for you, but, if you DIY it it'll get you down the road until you can get the tore replaced. In the center of the tire, the plugs are usually good for the life of the tire, or a few years. YMMV. I don't go mudding, so I can't say. You'll need to ask elsewhere.

q s1 yeah I don’t know man. I haven’t had a puncture in about 3 years. I bought 4 brand new tyres yesterday and today I punctured 2 tyres... with only one spare tyre I had to call an Uber just to take them to be repaired. The driver didn’t want to take me as the wheels were covered in sut... I had to call a mobile tyre repair guy. £80 for 2 tyres to be repaired. The repair guy had me by the balls as I was working and this was preventing me from getting paid. All because someone dropped a bunch of screws.
Just got this done at a local shop for $7 and wanted to see if this is actually how it’s done because it’s not something I’d expect lol. Appreciate the video I think I’ll just do it myself next time.

Add cement liberally to the plug before putting in. It makes inserting the plug easier, and helps seal the hole better. Lastly, after inflating the tire to the proper air pressure, and clipping off the excess plug, put some soapy water over the repair to check for leaks. The soap bubbles make it much easier to see a leak, rather than trying to listen for a slow leak that may still be there.
They told me that a plug won't work outside the lines. they said you have to patch it from the inside. So I had that done. It still leaks. So I'm using Fix A Flat to finish off the job. I saw so many use plugs. They must really work.

Tire warranties won’t cover punctures near the sidewall. Tire companies are crooks when it comes to repair requirements. And most tire shops don’t know anything. Plugs always work if the hole isn’t huge.

To clarify for the comments, don't shove the thing that punctured your tire into the tire. The first tool is used to rough up and open up the hole enough for the plug to get in. Great video, and if anyone is having trouble, just follow the instructions on the back of the pack.
Okay, I looked again, and it's there. Before the video just jump cut over it. Must have been a glitch. My apologies. Thanks for the video. I've done it before, but was having trouble. I remember something about twisting it before you pull it out...
Make sure you buy a nice tire plug kit, online they sell for only about 20 bucks, it will have much better reamers and handles than the cheap one used here. You will need a cheap air compressor in your trunk too. I have fixed many, many tires (tow truck days) and never taken the wheel off the car or truck before, just roll the tire around so you can easily work on the hole. Finding it might be your biggest problem, after that, as long as it's not a sidewall puncture, you can ream it out good, don't worry, the plug will plug the hole, works every time, I have even once used two plugs at the same time on a really huge hole, I wouldn't drive far with a hole like that, but for normal plugged tires, they can go for a long way.

I didn't know these existed. I only knew about fix a flat spray and professional plugs at tire shops. When I had a screw in my tire the tire shop said it was too close to the sidewall and refused to do it. So I went to a used tire shop and he patched it for ten bucks with this method. I've driven over ten thousand miles on that patch and have never had this tire go low. Buncha scam artists out there I tell you.

My dad passed away in September. He always helped me on things like this.
Thanks for watching & we appreciate you sharing this advice. Us fellow DIY’ers need to stick together!

I totally agree and that's what I do.
The person doing this video doesn't know the difference between a plug and a patch, so I wouldn't put much faith in anything they do or say!

I'm always real careful to pick up any nails or screws that happen to fall on the ground anywhere. Especially where I'm driving.
I recently repair my tire using tire plugging. I would like know is safe to drive long distances

@@eugenedenny9119 yup
I wasted several strips trying to force them through the tire. You need to inflate the tire to at least 10 psi or close to that so the tire gives you resistance when forcing the tool and strip in. I had an inflator in my garage and just put a peace of paper and my finger against the hole as I was filling up the tire with air. Once it got to about 10 psi, I quickly moved on to plug the tire. Went right in. Great video by the way.

Wow lol impressive
You should never push the nail inside of the tire. Pull it out with pair of pliers

I like to do this repair instead of removing the tire to repair it properly. Saves me a lot of time and money. I get nails near on the outer or edge of the tire and that's where tire shops will tell you they cannot repair the tire and require you to buy a new tire.
@abimhhgrr cunzolebh you can, if it's too close to the sidewall then the tire shouldn't be repaired and put a spare tire on instead
You skipped over the hard part; Pushing the plug into the tire.

Use vulcanizing rubber cement. it seals the hole. always use the right kinda lube.
You can simply use the glue that came with the kit, dab a little before inserting
The glue he mentions is a hardening compound but paint it on the plug this makes it slimy and easy to push in. The tool he used the clean the hole is called a reamer. 3-5 times all the way in and out is plenty.

Most plugs are RTV (room temperature vulcanizing) and don't require rubber cement. However the rubber cement won't harm anything and does make the plug easier to push in.
Thanks for watching & sharing this.

@Desmond Bagley you mean "tires"

I've been at a tire shop for over an hour and there's been like 5 cars that have come through and got work done. Never again
i swear the local tire shops in my town are out at night dropping roofing nails and screws on the roads, i have had 3 different flats in one week
@@commiesnzombies I lived next to that tire shop and never had more flats lol. If I was in the glass business I'd keep a fresh supply of rocks
Thanks for sharing. 😎👍

Thanks for the lesson , I just learned something new

To clarify for the comments, don't shove the thing that punctured your tire into the tire. The first tool is used to rough up and open up the hole enough for the plug to get in.
Great video, and if anyone is having trouble, just follow the instructions on the back of the pack.
Thanks for watching & we appreciate you sharing this. Any & all helpful info is greatly appreciated.

Nice, you skipped the one part I was trying to figure out, pulling it out without pulling thing with it. How did you manage that? LOL
Okay, I looked again, and it's there. Before the video just jump cut over it. Must have been a glitch. My apologies. Thanks for the video. I've done it before, but was having trouble. I remember something about twisting it before you pull it out...
There is a slit on the end of the tool so that the rubber strip will come out when you pull out the tool.
If the plug comes out, the hole is probably too big
Your suppose to pull up quickly not slow. Peace and God Bless
I agree.
Why and why not slowly? Just wondering
@@esplicitittyyy6563 It may pull the plug back out. When you pull quick, it will release/cut the plug and stay in the tire.
I patched my first tire thanks to this videos😅😂

I didn't know these existed. I only knew about fix a flat spray and professional plugs at tire shops. When I had a screw in my tire the tire shop said it was too close to the sidewall and refused to do it. So I went to a used tire shop and he patched it for ten bucks with this method. I've driven over ten thousand miles on that patch and have never had this tire go low. Buncha scam artists out there I tell you.

I’m tired of going to tire shops and paying money. I once went and they charged me $30 just to remove my tire inspect it, find a short nail and tell me my tire wasn’t actually punctured. I feel like this video will teach you a useful skill you can keep with you for life

Some of those plug kits don't use cement. I used to work at a parts store, the more expensive ones are SUPER sticky and don't require any. The "self vulcanize" or so they claim...
