As much as I do love the modern stop motion innovations, apart of me does love/enjoy the old school (where you see finger prints, changes in fur, etc)

Watching this movie right now and it’s just amazing knowing the work and know how that went into it.
I LOVE Laika and their work! But admittedly I was a bit saddened by the use of computer animation in Missing Link. I really felt like it took away some of the magic and art of their meticulous stop motion. It sort of made it look like a normal cartoon.
In fact I looked for this video just to confirm it was in fact stop motion and not just animation..
I just felt like, if you’re going to use computer animation for most of the background and effects, what’s to say you don’t just use it to make the characters expressions too.. 😕
I absolutely LOVE everything they have made and I just don’t want it to be seen as another “cartoon” after all the amazing work they did with those puppets!! 😍
While I appreciated all the work that went into making this, I agree. I think they could have saved a lot of money by simply using their CG characters instead of 3D printing every frame. If their budget was 50-60 million dollars like their other movies, they made just around half their budget which means we might not see this type of animation in the future. While I think this is cool, I am perfectly fine with how The Lego Movie(s) looked. They can capture that stop motion feel even if everything is CG.
I would travel and pay to see an expo on the making of this movie or any Laika movie, it's absolutely fascinating. WAY better than anything that Disney could make.

This has just been released on Netflix in the UK. Truly amazing work 😮 and silky smooth animation, I was trying to figure out if this is CG or stop-motion as lacks the slight jumpiness you usually get with the latter. Incredible patience for all involved in production too.
I feel like this movie was pulled off looking even more effortless than Laika's other's, so impressive.
Best Studio ever, but I have this problem. Why are Laika movies so limited in screening? I wanted to see Missing Link but there is just less screentime. Just one or two screenings of that movie, and in just less of a month. Why is that?

but.... they put on so much "post", the film seems 3d generated and not so stop-motion. In some places, you have to wonder why they do stop-motion, it looks so CGed.
it is insanely cheaper tho than a pixar or disney animated film. i saw in an interview that coraline, paranorman, and boxtrolls combined cost about as much as only one pixar film

So basically, stop motion films are mini-robots films now
Stop-motion has used armatures of this nature for a long time. I've experimented with armature-less claymation and it's a pain just getting the figures to stand up nevermind do all the actions they do.
The truth is, with all its money and advances, it still isn't as clever or funny as Nick Park's
A Grand Day Out and The Wrong Trousers.
The script is everything.
And all the perceived 'problems' with traditional animation are what makes it charming.
Stop-frame feels like what you wanted playing with your toys to be.
All the advances seem to bleed the life from it.
Soooo tedious
