  • F1 tracks are boring (at least most of them are). So what makes the good ones great? And which tracks should you consider attending in-person?
    All this (and much more) discussed in this video!

      Nevermind it’s the horrible modern Hockenheim, not the lovely forest course that every real F1 fan goes crazy for!

    I say all this before watching:
    1) A wide variety of lines that can be utilized in varying scenarios at multiple areas of the track
    2) Curves that allow cars to "get wiggly" at speed when racing
    3) Turn 1 chaos
    4) Elevation/grade change
    5) Unique corners that present a challenge drivers won't see on most tracks (think the Zandvoort banking or cota t1)
    Some less controllable variables:
    6) Proximity to unpredictable or changeable weather conditions
    7) Car size. Bigger reduce the amount of turns that can be interesting
    8) Pirelli's not being ass
    9) Championship stakes. Part of the Interlagos magic is that it historically has been a key WDC and WCC race where people make or break a season. A return of the older points scoring format would aid this, as every race becomes important.

    I think you've done a great job with this video, but perhaps when looking at those three main actors like Interlagos, Spa and Monza, also mentioning Silverstone, maybe Suzuka would be very good to include in this as well. The racing in itself does suffer a bit due to the many sweeping bends, but I guess that is a whole category in itself. Looking at tracks that basically get all the satisfaction (viewer and driver alike) on Saturdays could be another one to look at. Being a Seb fan all the time I watched F1, I have always seen Suzuka as my one favourite track in F1!

    • @jakemorganGP
      @jakemorganGP  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Suzuka is fantastic and is definitely a great track, but I focused on what was giving fans the highest satisfaction based on average ratings and then looming at the track features at those races to make the video.
      But this is why I said that tracks like Monaco still have their place - they make Saturday the importance rather than Sunday. So yeah defo room for other track characteristics and features to make a well-rounded calendar

    Watching quali in Monaco with every car scratching the edges and trying to gain half a tenth to each other is something incredible. And then on race day, the strategies used to optimise pace and keep the position is always what guides a loss or a win. Monaco is a great grand prix if you don't look at overtakes as much as the whole weekend strategies

    I'd argue we also need some better on track cameras. In addition to the racing not being close, the cars look really slow on screen sometimes, especially when they going through shots of the same corners and straights each lap. They need to mix up the live editing more. More of the trackside cameras on the ground, and more onboard camera shots. The majority of F1 viewership is at home so it should look more exciting for the viewers who can't make it all the way out to a gp

    Some points i would disagree. 1 Interlagos is quite narrow circuit with only some sections in S3 being wide. What works for it is the short layout with not many fast corners to generate dirty air. Spa has not produced many great races in past decade tbh. Those fast flowing corners are nice in hotlaps, but are abosolute killers of close racing. What makes or breakes the racing is cars. Even if we have only these "great tracks" if the cars are shit, so will be racing. Ofc track configuration helps. Fun comparison i have is GTWC at Paul Ricard. that 3hr race has more action in it than all F1 races at PR combined. The GT3's can make the track work where F1 couldnt. Dare i say is we had PR on calendar in early 2010's it would give us better racing.

From what I gather simracing and following the real world of racing you can't really have an objective way of determining what makes a good track. But then you have Nordschleife what on paper shouldn't be fun track but it is.

      @jakemorganGP  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @MrTheracer256 I partially agree. I do think that you can objectively look at what tracks are going to be better than others, but because there are so many different factors that make a Grand Prix crazy or not it’s very hard to say 100% yes or no because it’s more than just the track features which make a Grand Prix good.
      That being said, you made a great point about the Norge life, it depends what you’re looking at for a good Grand Prix. I’m assuming that the fans were looking at purely drama on track which is why those tracks often get higher voting than Suzuka. For example.

See Qatar, Qatar is one of the best circuits if you see the track itself, but because of the DRS in the princpal straight, anybody tries to make good overtakings, I mean, would you try to make a good-looking overtake knowing that you can overtake any car in the main straight without any difficulties?

    Silverstone is IMO the greatest. The Maggots-Becketts complex are the only real part of the circuit where there's only one line, but they're such spectacular corners that it doesn't really matter that much. Cars can take different lines and race side by side through pretty much every other corner, and it's common for an overtake to be setup half a lap in advance of where it's completed.
    Interlagos is a close second. Spa and Monza are beautiful and iconic circuits, but they actually produce a lot of dull races.
    COTA does have a habit of producing good races, but the fact that it is a bit of a copy/paste job just takes something away from it for me.
    Honourable mentions: Bahrain is an excellent circuit. Turkey needs to be brought back to the calendar.

    Spa and Monza are so boring. I think people rate them too highly. I do love the tracks and they should stay on the calendar, but they don’t produce racing like São Paulo does

      Apart from F1 open lobbies I’d have to totally agree but I was a wet wipe and went with the highest fan voted races 🤣

    You forgot to mention gradients. These tracks all need differing gradients.

      True. Defo contributes to cool races
