    Beautiful. Thanks. Brought back memories growing up in the Soo. And my heart is still grieving for Edmund Fitzgerald!

    Thank you. I am going to show my class this so they get a better idea of why the locks are important.

    Nicely done! My family had brekkie across the street from the Soo locks in 1965 as a ship was down river bound in the lock. It was one of those WOW experiences that sparked my interest in the wider world around me.

    I just found this and your channel. GOOD JOB! I often wonder as I watch the Freighters from the many cams around the Great Lakes just what it must be like to be a hand on deck of one of those mighty freighters. Thanks for posting this. :)

    Awesome! Thank you for the explanation and the diagram! The diagram really helped my understanding of locks and canals! Wishing you safe adventures!

    Mad jelly, here. Always wanted to do that. Grew up in Michigan, loving the Great Lakes, but I never made it up to Sault St. Marie. Great job on the video!

    Aside from the music being a bit loud, the video was amazing. Very well put to together and great job narrating. I've sailed through these locks many times over my 8 year sailing career.. Also, for people that may have been wondering, the smaller lock on the right was the old Canadian lock.. It was only 19 feet deep so it couldn't handle a bigger laker at 26.6 feet deep. Ships like the Fort William and Fort Henry could sail through them. My brother worked on the Fort William and went through the Canadian lock a number of times..

      The Sault Ste. Marie Ontario locks never get shown in this video...

    Awesome. It’s cool that you included the video of another ship that I _presume_ is Lee A Tregurtha and the two salutes the vessels exchanged

      Yes! That was of the Lee, taken from the Stewart J Cort.

    Great video overview with story of student work project embedded into it. Superb music really made it even more uplifting to see this amazing example of American industry and engineering. The visuals also helped me to understand how it is that the Soo Locks lift / lower ships so they can pass from one lake to another. Great video! I couldn't tell if this was made by the student narrator or by the production company named at the end, but if it was the student who made it, bravo!

      Thank you! This was one of my first projects when I got interested in video production. This, among other early projects, laid the groundwork for the documentary I'm currently producing on the lighthouses of Door County, WI.
      Thank you for your feedback!!

    So if the locks weren’t there you would basically have to go downhill in water and uphill in water? I’m confused as to what would it be like if they weren’t there? Just a steep ramp like river of water?

    • @LighthouseJake
      @LighthouseJake  ปีที่แล้ว

      A steep ramp of water is rapids. Between the American locks and the Canadian locks are a series of rapids that mimic what the untamed river might look like. Commercial navigation at that point would be impossible.

    • @albertaoridge
      @albertaoridge ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LighthouseJake ah rapids!! Thanks that makes complete sense now. The rapids would be too rough/fast and Flow would be too much in one direction for ships and such to use and navigate through. Appreciate you.

      @@LighthouseJake Nice, the Lee is such a beauty. I live in Sault Ste. Marie (Ontario) and thankfully i get to see a good handful of the great ships, the Lee, and Alpena obviously being favorites around here for their age and grace.

      CottonwoodStudios how do you get a job on a ship there

    • @LighthouseJake
      @LighthouseJake  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You need a Merchant Mariners document through the Coast Guard, a TWIC card through the TSA and a US Passport. After that it's a matter of finding a company to hire you. I worked for the Interlake Steamship Company.

    How does the Deck Hand get back aboard the ship? A ladder?

    • @LighthouseJake
      @LighthouseJake  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the locks, they wait until the deck is level with the lock wall. Otherwise, yes there are long ladders that are stored vertically along the side of the fwd superstructure that get lowered when the ship is in port

    Those long bulk carriers. They carry ores and the likes. Where are they taking it from, and where to? Is the ore for trans-shipment to other parts of the USA/Canada away from the Lakes shores, or plants on the lakes shores?

    • @LighthouseJake
      @LighthouseJake  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi John. The ship I was on, the Stewart J. Cort, loaded taconite in Superior, Wisconsin and unloaded it at ArcelorMittal in Burns Harbor, Indiana. There are hundreds of ports on the lakes, each handling their own cargo. Depends on what needs to go where.

    2 out of 5 stars!!!
    No video of an UPBOUND ship ACTUALLY being RAISED SOLELY by gravity??? Disappointing!!! W.T.HEY!!!
    Hey, I hope your smart enough to be on a line when your lying on a hatch cover at night watching the stars!!! You have been warned!!! Listen to Gordon Lightfoot's song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"!!!
    I am going to be 72 y.o. in September, 2019; and I have been to the Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point. Heed the counsel of your elders!!!
    We don't know each other, but I don't want anything bad to happen to you on a Laker either.
    Smooth waters and a following breeze to you.
