Even though the industry has all this money, they still tried to convince the US Congress to help them out.
Congress informed the Industry that they would be happy to help any US ships .
None of the Ship are based in the US.
If they were , they have to obey US labor laws .
And no Cruise Company could afford to stay in business .
So the US Government told them to talk to the governments of the Home Ports of the ships .

I was on board at that time, but missed the free cruise because my ship happened to be at my home country already. Bummer hahaha.
My friends who stayed, however, seemed to have had a good time. The living conditions during that time were even better than normal. With no passengers on board, they had little to no work and were free to use some of the ship's services - in my ship, everyone had an individual, fully equipped passenger suite (with balcony!) for that period. Also, spending long stretches of time on board is normal, so those 2 months of travel weren't nearly as stressful as they may have sounded.
For job security, during that travel they were all on payroll, on top of that, we weren't really laid off and as soon as this passes we will be hired back, as the industry recovers.
From the comments here, I see that people have a really bad image of work and living conditions on board, but they are not bad at all. I definitely wish I had been forced to extend my stay for a two months trip like that.

Some cruise lines didn't collect up all their ships in one floating offshore zone. Some sent them to ports - including some ports *way* off the beaten track. I am fortunate enough to live near Eastport, Maine, USA where the Oceania Riviera was docked for many months, and went to go see the ship. The cruise ship is large enough to take the whole town's population on board, with room left over, so it was rather impressive to see it at the waterfront, towering over even the church steeples. And while there, the ship was paying 1/10th the docking fees of a major city, and mostly paid the debt on the recent expansion of the dock to be able to handle ships that large, so the town was pretty happy to host the ship.

Fascinating - having worked in large organizations my entire life, I knew that simply stopping the servicing & sending home a "customer base" was only the tip of the iceberg when cruise companies had to shutter this time two years ago. I especially marveled at the solution Carnival used to shuttle their fleet's personnel home from the Caribbean - remarkable; I would love to know what the life of crew members was like during those sailings (especially Filipino employees whose "shuttle" took the longest)?

Great video. One thing that I wished you covered was that it was not "smooth sailing" for every cruise company. There was half a dozen smaller cruise companies that folded in 2020, the largest was CMV-Cruise and Maritime Voyages. In July 2020, the parent company SQTL (South Quay Travel & Leisure Ltd) went into administration / bankruptcy; leaving the fate of employees, their five ships (plus one they were in the process of purchasing) and the passenger's fares in the great unknown.

On the other side of the tourist equation, is someone like my best friend; a Burmese Muslim man in his 50's, with wife & 2 teenage boys. He is a tour guide at a border town. In good times, he's poor. Since COVID and border lockdowns, he and his ilk are barely staying alive.

I was a crew member aboard Serenade of the Seas (Royal Caribbean) when all this unfolded. Lots of memories came back while watching this--truly nostalgic! I am grateful for my company as I felt that our safety was the top priority--while it was losing money--all while figuring out how to best send each single crew home. We were fed, internet was free, and we were paid til end of April, then supplemental "allowance" til we were flown home which was at the end of May 2020.
Barbados was one of the very few island who opened their doors for the ships to dock and replenish supplies. As a way of gratitude, Royal already made Barbados as one of its home ports once cruising resumes. I for sure miss the high seas and the ports featured here. See you all onboard soon!

Cold places and cruises are a recipe for disease and I don't know how you can be so ignorant to support cruises despite how they have been caught dumping plastic right into the ocean. Stop supporting this.
