      They can eat almost a pound of feed depending on breed. I had to play with feed during weather changing. They eat more during change of season. I personally do higher protein in winter and lower protein and higher fat in summer. My ducks free range from late spring to early fall. That helps lower feed costs. I hoped, I help some. Apologies, if I rambled. Thank you for commenting!

    Hi, we have Muscovy ducks. Somehow I was blessed with these ducks in my yard. I fell in love with the wagging tails, and bobbing heads. I hand raised 6 that lost most of their siblings and mom abandoned. They are my babies!!!! I feed them crumbles, they don't seem to like pellets. Cracked corn, whole corn, and dried meal worms. These are all ar Tractor Supply. I treat them to live worms from a bait shop, and live insects from a pet shop occasionally, which they love. However they seem to be bored with the feed from Tractor Supply. There are only a few selections of grain and feed available to me. Any suggestions on what else I can give them. I was told oatmeal, and rice are good treats too. Is this white or brown rice? Uncooked? Oatmeal instant or regular? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

      Have you tried to ferment the scratch grains from TSC? They seem to enjoy the feed more. I don't give my babies rice as they are picky, and hate peas. I would cook rice if you are going to try it.

    Next question how do you keep your ducks warm in winter

    • @lilacoaksfarm
      @lilacoaksfarm  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry for late response, but just found your message. I feed my ducks all flock and a Poulin grower/finisher crumblette, ducks need more fat than protein. They seem to do better, for me. it depends on where you live to keep ducks warm. I don't use heat, unless we go below zero for several days, then I use a heat plate.

    How does the flying work do you clip their wings?

    • @lilacoaksfarm
      @lilacoaksfarm  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Domesticated ducks generally can't fly. Muscovy and Mallards can fly. They can use their wings to jump on or over things. They can "fly" if there is a nice wind. My Runners got a nice breeze and went over the fence which is 4ft high. They mostly glide, when they do try and fly.

    A local pond near us has many many ducks (some semi-wild, but many are domestics abandoned there). We'd often go there with our kid to feed them oats. Saw lots of others feeding bread, but the most "interesting" thing we witnessed was a family feeding the ducks an entire bag of peanut butter filled pretzels. 0_o

      Bread is not good for ducks. If you want to feed them something, but some All Flock pellets or crumbles from the feed store and throw them on the ground.

    Thank you for highly informative info on what ducks eat. I don't have any ducks yet but, have thought about getting some, both for eggs and meat. I have a couple of questions, well, more than a couple but, I'll start with the one that I've thought about most. Can you have ducks and chickens together? Meaning, in the same coop/hen house. I have a fairly large hen "house" that sits in the middle of a 6ft high fenced in large run/enclosure, which connects to the back of my house. (it used to be my previous dogs run)
    I currently don't have any chickens, due to that I've recently come back over here to my old house/homestead here in Scandinavia) after having lived in BC Canada for 5 yrs. I am rural semi off grid so, I have the room for both chickens, ducks etc. As well as larger 4 legged animals... LOL I however have no experience at all when it comes to ducks, other than the wild duck that would fly in to have her babies in the pond in the front yard of the property I lived at in Canada.
    She really had a lot of character and was fun to both watch and interact with. She came back every year to have her babies in our pond and even if we visually couldn't tell her apart from other female ducks of the same breed, she would "tell" us that it was her. Follow us around, quacking until she'd get her food... :D After the first year, she had learned that she was safe, regardless of what we or my dog did. Lawnmower, tractor, shooting a rifle over the pond, to scare black bears or wolves off, she'd just sit there and not bat an eyelash.
    She knew that her babies were safe from everything. Both that we 2-legged critters kept a watchful eye but mostly my guard dog Nova. Nova took her job as protector seriously. She'd lay next to the pond and wouldn't even let smaller birds land next to it to search for worms. Nope, she'd jump up and chase them away. Also kept the eagles, hawks and other threatening birds at bay. Mama duck would wait for Nova to come out before she'd fly off on her daily roundabouts.
    I really loved interacting with the babies, they'd do like their mama did and follow us around quacking or, come up on the front porch and quack at us through the glass in the door, if they wanted more food. Watching mama duck teach her young to fly has left many funny memories. She'd lead them down the driveway, past the machine shop a ways and then fly back. Causing the ducklings to go totally bonkers, running, trying to fly, crash landing, back up and try it again. LOL
    Anywho...
    I'll quit my rambling...
    Much love
    //Solani

      I tried to have them together, but the chickens would pick on them. I have seen lots of ppl do it and others have same problem as me. I even tried as chicks and ducklings, the chicks were mean and bossy. Lol not saying it can not be done. Just I never had luck with it.

    • @solanisomeni
      @solanisomeni ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lilacoaksfarm Thank you. 🙏 I've heard similar from a few folks as well. Most say that they can be outside together but in the coop, they need their own space.
      Oh well... The chicken coop/house I have is big enough to split down the middle into 2 sections and also has 2 door so, I'll most likely divide it.

      I know, if they get a little to chubby, they can decrease in egg laying. from personal experience. I had some do that too. lol
      Lack of natural sunlight from going into winter, does that for me. Since our days, are now going longer, here on the east coast, I will be swimming in eggs soon. I try to supplement them in winter, with extra calcium.

      All the time. I try to have enough drake to hen ratio. If I don't, I try and keep their flock separate. I have had to do drake camps in the past. But not something I would want to do again. Every drake us different on how many hens, he can handle. Cowboy can only handle 4, where Draco, who is khaki can handle 10. I hope, I answered your question.

      chick grit works very well for my ducks. the chicken grit was larger sized and harder for the ducks (and some of my chickens) to consume. so i just go with the chick grit for everyone. my chickens and ducks get a layer pellet (from tractor supply.. dumor is the step up from producer's pride ) it has both added calcium with pre-biotics & pro-biotics. with some cracked corn on the side. and they all lay as they should within their breed standards. tho i will say... during the height of the laying season, i do provide calcium in a small metal cat dish. (i pretty much get it all at tractor supply)
