    Just getting caught up with your videos as we have combining organic rye and barley. We swath both as it is hard to get it dry enough for storage and are able to pick up 35 feet with a draper head. All of the rye straw goes to a big dairy for dry cow feed. The barley straw is sold to another dairy for calf bedding. I feel the toe pain all the way to Wisconsin!

    With our s780s we can usually only go around 2.5mph picking up 35ft swaths depending on the conditions. But our rye always seems incredibly tough and it is non-organic 5ft rye. We also hope for around 120bu/ac with our non-organic stuff so that’s a lot more material to separate as well

    Hi Carson , great video, i know it was 5 days ago you posted , just getting a chance to catch up. With your toe, Tape it to 2 to 3 other ones. it will heal faster. It might be uncomfortable for a few but it will feel better.

      @@6thGenFarmer it will , ice it a little bit and watch toe you broke if the nail turns purple you may loose or it could fall off, keep an eye on it. trust me its no fun at all . Try wearing sneakers or if need be use a ace banage you wrap foot and toes it wil also help the pain and make you more comfortable

    Hi Carson! Sorry to hear about your toe, I hate when door jambs jump out in front of you like that! Hope you heal fast. Great video by the way, your dad is so funny, he was probably thinking "Get out of the seat, let me calibrate it." LOL Seriously, top notch video, the drone shots are beautiful! Thanks, stay safe healthy and safe out there!

    We’ve been harvesting rye the past week. Cool to see a video of someone harvesting it

    Watching your Dad help you through the calibration procedures I bet he was saying to himself. Good thing all the Edumacation is not going to waste. Your lucky it did not ask you to hold the “ any “ key. They are really hard to find in a Combine. Stubbing a toe hurts a lot, breaking it takes the pain to a whole new level.

    Hi CARSON, very interesting video. We raised rye in Montana a few times only we swathed and baled it.I don`t recall what variety it was but it was a lot taller for dry land and hard to handle. Any way nice to see someone now days raise it. Certainly feel for you and your toe as it will be a while before it feels better. Really enjoy watching your DAD and you work together. GOD BLESS YOU All. Gerry

    My family grows wheat, so maybe I can take a crack at your speed question. The answer is...it depends. 😂 Some varieties are easier to thresh than others; if the crop is leaning (like yours) or lodged, you have to take more straw, meaning the combine has to work harder and you have to go slower; if it is humid, the straw will be less brittle and requires more power to combine. For a S780 and 40ft draper and the conditions in your video, I'd say 3-4mph would be about right.
    One of the biggest differences between small grains and corn/beans is how much plant material the rotor has to deal with. If you commit to growing more rye, you might want to invest in small grain concaves and sieves. They will help you clean your grain sample better. And for your organic fields, a Shelbourne stripper header would take off the seed head but leave all the straw standing. That might help with your weed control, and it would take much less combine horsepower and would let you run faster.
    Being from wheat country, those shots of a golden field in the middle of corn and beans puts a smile on my face! 😁

      Wow that was an extremely helpful comment! I really appreciate the time you took to write it. I also really like to see the rye field in the middle of all the corn and soybeans. Especially because we are the only ones in the area trying it.

      @@6thGenFarmer No problem! I hope it helps! You do a lot of things we don't have or do here (tile, rocks, dryland corn/beans), so it's cool to see how farming is done in other places. I really enjoy watching your videos!

    In the drone footage some parts of the field are darker than others... why is that? Also did you actually get your toe checked out, is it really broken?

    • @6thGenFarmer
      @6thGenFarmer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So on the far end there is 50 acres of oats, but the dark circles in the field are shadows from clouds. I did not get my toe checked out as it could still bend and it was straight… I do not believe there is much doctors can do if it is broken. However, this video was taken a few days ago and today it did feel a little bit better so it’s possible it was just a bad sprain or it was jammed really bad. The toe itself is still purple however

    Having combine both Rye and Spring wheat, Rye combines harder and is harder to shell out, do you have the fillers in the the front of the concave or do you have the small grain concaves in? We always run grain concaves in wheat and switch to the round bar for soy's and corn.

    • @6thGenFarmer
      @6thGenFarmer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the little bit of rye we harvested we did not change our conclaves. We are going to use a cleaner later to clean it anyway
