- The time has FINALLY come, we are actually mowing the forage rye! Its a huge experiment and we finally get to some how it all turns out.
I get very excited about how much food there will be for cows, I break the mower and I give the TOP TIPS for anyone looking at mowing forage rye.

LOL, thanking the Lord for dry weather. As a Texan this is a foreign concept. I had a little over 100 acres of winter (Elbon) rye this year and was certainly not asking for dry weather at any time.
This is what we grow for our winter crop. we do winter silage nov-apr then one crop of corn silage may-oct. some neighbors do 2 corn crops feb-nov then fallow or winter silage for a couple months.
Great crop. On some mowers you can take out the conditioner board. I've found this to be a night and day difference in very tall crops. Looks good just something I've learned

This is the video we have been waiting for, thanks! I'm going to go and cut ours this morning, bit later than planned but such is life. Will take some photos. Plan on strip tilling in maize after. Looking forward to next week's video.
Strip till maize would have been ideal for us but we never got there. I bet it looks well too.

Same, fed a couple of bales we broke during moving and they ate it really well and it hadn’t really ensiled at that point for 🤞

5 meters is about 15 ft
Not if you are fortunate enough to have a vicon fast bale
If you will harvest at the boot stage instead of the heading stage, your protein levels will be MUCH higher. Boot stage is a very tight window, so mother nature doesn't always cooperate with a perfect timing.
Yeh that was the trouble this year. The weather came bad for 2 weeks and it was too far gone. Hoping to give it another go but with a vetch in the crop too to help fertilise and provide more protein to the feed. 👍

Some rye was grown for an AD plant near us and the flat bits (most of it ) were left behind ,I think they direct cut it with a Kemper header on a SP chopper.
Yeh that’s the trouble. I think anything would struggle with that flat stuff.
The trick with driving straight is not having one thing to aim for in the distance but 2, line them up together and that gives a straight line

There's a sweet spot with the rye. To long and shot its like sweet straw shorter and leafier just after heads out it's nice. Hopefully works out for u. Even the sweet straw is good for bulking out rations
I think it probably went a bit too far but the weather was against us which didn’t help. Learnt a lot this year though so hopefully we’ll get on better next year. 👍
We use window cleaner on the guards. But usually they’re kept on by the cables

Did you roundup the field before drilling? Has it had any other sprays in its growing period?
I really like the idea of a bulky crop to feed dairy dry cows .

Also your Forage Rye crop is the crop a once off forage crop, my merchant advisor seemed to think it is a wholecrop cereal crop.

soapy water to keep the guards on maybe? or glue the rubbers to the window and make the guard removable?
Being a tractor driver is so easy u can even drive a drone both at the same time

Cut some hybrid rye for customer in 2019, mower without conditioner, had to mow one way and then only 1-2 mph, took hours, id like to try some for early grazing ewes and lambs, 👍video
Gonna try some grazing this year I think Richard. Should hold it back a bit and make it easier to mow in the spring.

i use baby oil it works great but u need to clean ur window crystal clear but they hate windy days

did you put any nitrogen on the crop in early spring or slurry ?
some grown around here for the grain ..........contractors are not keen on putting a combine through it as it takes too long .........massive yeilds of straw and grain if all goes well .
will be watching you to se how the bales feed out in winter .......
We gave it 80kg N per Ha quite early but think we might try it with vetches next year and use less synthetic N

Terrific crop-why not try forage sorghum? Tremendous height and yield
I havnt tried sorghum. Used to grow it for a game cover but it can be hit and miss with our climate.

does the mower throw rocks at ur windows that specific one i thought only the pulling ones and the reason is behind u and not next to you

Just found this channel and really liked the video! Maybe you can answer me one question. I keep seeing videos from the UK and the US where the farmers mow huge fields as seen here and most of the time they only have one mower in the rear. Here in Germany, butterfly combinations with three mowers have become pretty much the standard and I'm wondering why that isn't the case in the UK/US as far as I could see, despite the huge fields. In your case, does it have to do with the soil or anything or that you don't have the fitting tractor for it or any other reason? Just curious since I'm thinking it's taking a whole lot of time to get a field like this done with only one mower. Thank you very much and keep up the good work! :)
We do have triple mower set ups here. I think it must just be by chance that UK farmers on TH-cam are using single mowers.

Didn’t have any trouble with it actually. The stalks were plenty sappy enough to bend rather than pierce. 👍

Because the conditioner is trying to pull it through before it's been cut . ..that's the problem
Yeh we realised that after a while. Once it was slackened off it went much better but you wouldn’t want to go too fast.

That forage rye seems to grow from nowhere. I reckon you can actually watch it grow.
Cereal rye is hollow stem, you don't condition it anyway. You'll destroy your equipment and slow your drying

Our farms are so much smaller over here. We farm 450acres and that would be considered a medium sized farm for us.
