  • Photography and Instagram have been at odds for a while now, but I think there is much more to the story that us photographers need to accept.

    You are 100% correct about photography being easy. When I learned back in the 70's, as a college student, had to make a choice....eat food or buy film. And with a roll being 36 images, you really had to get it right (or shoot brackets)...then there was processing the film and then into the darkroom to make prints....yeah.. photography is MUCH easier, especially with Mirrorless. BTW, great video on this topic Jonny.

      Here's what I don't get, I joined Vero during the time it was hyped almost a year ago, when many photographers started joining. I didn't like how I wasn't getting anywhere on Instagram. I still have hardly any followers and barely get noticed on Vero, even though I am using many hashtags others use. Many people on Vero somehow managed to get hundreds or thousands of followers fast yet I can't when I am doing the same thing they do? Posting daily, commenting on others work, following photographers that get my attention, trying to post photos that stand out.
      I notice my black and white photos seem to get more attention than the others though.

      @ArtNGame215 Same here. I'm actually going to be deleting my IG. I'm not a fan of what Mark Zuckerberg has done to the platform. Most of the top photographers on their buy their likes comments and followers. Just have a look at their follow to like ratio for a clue. None of it adds up. I've exposed Flickr for using scripts and bots, and their completely fine with it as they banned a user that I exposed than unbanned them and allowed them to continue on with their generic script comments. The sad thing is just about everyone on Flickr knows that Victor Chen cheats his way around all the likes and comments, yet nothing is done about it. What a sad life that is for him. Or anybody else that fakes popularity. I think some of the users on Vero use scripts as well. I tried reddit, but it also seems fake to me. You basically have to earn a rep to get by. I posted these great firework photos that got about 69 upvotes only to have someone comment about my exposure needing to be longer than 30 seconds. Which was nonsense at best. They showed me their example, and it was a poor composition with powerlines in the frame, yet it had over 200 upvotes.

    Good video.
    Imo the fix to reach is to get out and connect with people in real life. Social media is not the end all be all.
    It’s kool to post and share but I’ve learned to get back out in the real world and connect with like minded people.
    Social media unless you already someone known in your city, well known, or established, you won’t stand out anymore due to a lack of individuality for a lot of people.
    People want to know who are we? What’s the significance behind the photos and person? Who is the person behind the camera or phone and why should I care about the person?
    Al lacks soul so that will never top real life human interactions.

    Good video Jonny and all great points. I think Instagram changed, for the worse, when it became just another advertising platform. As soon as it became flooded with brands and adverts, it lost the appeal of a creative medium.

    A lot of really good points made there. As a non photographer who follows photographers on IG, the ones I do follow, I follow for their unique style and the unique perspective the person behind the camera gives to their work. Also I think AI photography will go through the same phase AI art is currently going through. That is, you go on IG and yes it is flooded with AI art. However, due to how AI art is made (i.e. an iterative process using a lot of the same training knowledge) a lot of AI art has a very similar style/look. So even if AI art is posted made by many different accounts, it all looks like it just comes from a few sources. The more AI art floods IG, the quicker AI art as a style becomes very boring. Lost count of the times I keep reseeing the same stuff just with a different colour there, or a different shape there. The art posts which stand out now, aren't AI art, but the ones which look new and unique (the human made art). Hence by that logic, the photography which has that unique signature style will always win in the end. I think you ending point is spot on at focusing on taking photos that have story and meaning is spot on.

    Yep, pretty much agree with what you said, at least conceptually.
    The only thing that I disagree with, and this is particular to me, is how useful Vero is. I shoot portrait, creative portraits etc. Yes, there are a couple of big name people with Vero accounts, but it's people I already knew via IG. However, apart from tacky "glamour shoots", there is a real lack of portrait photography on Vero.
    Unless something has changed recently, the "Discover" tab in Vero doesn't even have Portrait section. Vero seems to be primarily landscape, urban and street photography, so other people *may* get value from it. It's just not for me.

      I use Mastodon, and I've heard good things of PixelFed. I'm sad that both Instagram and DeviantArt no longer have that good support network for photography. I don't need another site, and I've heard similar platforms that would only last maybe a couple years and then go silent. I know Amino apps have faded in popularity too.

    IG has just deleted the option of Recent Posts in hashtags on iPhone. Just Top Photos. How can my photos ever become top photos if people go on Hashtags and never see my post ? I think this changed within the last 2 weeks and the likes I'm now getting are just Followers. Recent Posts are still available on my Macbook but that is clumsy. This is a disaster for myself and other creators trying to grow their channel. It would be great if you were able to investigate this. Cheers and regards.

    I've had almost zero feedback on vero. I built up a large account on Twitter & I realised that it's not about talent, it's about consistency. Some of the best photographers have the smallest followings.

    Very true.. I remember than just posting a drone photo was enough to make people hyped.. and people hate to see a drone photo now. Just a few months ago everyone was doing AI art.. and again the whole AI art trend is already dead in just a few months. Every new trend is getting boring quicker and quicker.

    IG takes flack because it's due, imho. I would challenge your position here - why did we all have far better reach and engagement previously, and then it changed? Was this down to user behaviour? I get your trying to teach us new ways of engagement which is valued; it really is. However, the amendments to the platform algorithm are down to IG changes, not the form or methods IG users or photographers present their work. If we stay on the platform, I agree we need to roll with the algorithm to a certain extent or let the engagement and reach reduce and accept it - I run with the latter, and I do as I please - it's a personal choice. Camera manufacturers must create a technological way of protecting "real" photography. Perhaps this can be achieved by stamping images through firmware with a copyrighted protected mechanism that platforms can detect and that AI cannot produce so we can separate the various genres (which I accept all have a place) and maintain the photography profession, art, technical skills that many people value, and are being nullified by unbridled AI progression, the unforeseen problems from which we have yet to see. Innovation needs to be regulated.

    This paid advertisement for Vero would have been great if you just made a video about Vero. I've always enjoyed your videos but this one went in the wrong direction and felt like click bait. It's wild to me that Vero would sponsor this video, yet not invest anything in improving the platform. They've added no new features for a really long time, even when everybody was desperately looking for an Insta alternative. You can't even do threaded replies on a post, it literally just tacks all new replies on the end, so multiple conversations in the replies is just total mayhem.

      So you recon photography is the same today as it was 20 years ago? it's not even the same as it was this time last year. Someone literally won a photography competition with an AI generated image.

    yeah honestly though Instagram is still far superior to Vero. There's no reach, its way more confusing, and I hate that the thumbnail of your posts on Vero is a low res image ( you have to click into it for the full res)

    • @ItsJonnyKeeley
      @ItsJonnyKeeley  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The trouble with instagram is the whole post is low resolution, which makes sense since high quality images are not their priority.

  • @MathiasWasik
    @MathiasWasik 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'm not very convinced by the points made. The point that we need to appeal more to non-photographers? That doesn't explain the fact that our actual followers - most of whom ARE photographers - don't see our photos. The argument that photography is easier now doesn't hold either. Photography was easy already when Instagram started and even just a few years ago engagement rates were much better for many photographers. I think the closest you're getting to the truth is when you say Instagram is not about photography. It used to be. It actually started as a photo app. But it's not anymore because Meta wants it to be something different, a money-making business that chases innovations others like TikTok come up with.
