I was in the Army for 9 years and always thought it was kind of fucked up how you guys were given our hand me downs. At least y’all got the M27 IAR! That beast is pretty sick.
Feels like that is largely a result of MC higher-ups saying they'll do it. No one makes the top MC brass do stupid shit, they volunteer. Just wondering, could be wrong.
He probably never brings any of this type of stuff around his co workers or when he’s on set and now that they’ll be able to listen and watch this there gonna have a totally different perspective on this man nothing but respect for you brotha keep doing your thing Shawn these videos are one of a kind
John Shrek McPhee has alluded to what Gray is talking about regarding the Fallujah plan in an interview. If I recall he wasn’t impressed with Mattis and felt that his unit was being tied up and it was costing marines lives. Maybe he also referenced hunting Zarkawi in Fallujah but I could be wrong about that. He would be a great guest and it’s important for the historical record going forward to know what and how our leaders make decisions.
Of all of your interviews, Shawn, I had to shut it off. Couldn't listen to part one completely. I listen to your podcasts one hour each way to work and couldn't stomach it. This guy is so real, it makes me sick. 😢 Hit a heart string. I pray for him.
that thousand-yard-stare on 6:23 gave me a shiver. Only God knows what those eyes have seen at Fallujah. My Marine cousin was there in Fallujah. He had that same exact stare. He was never the same again.
There were 2 Battles for Fallujah. The first in April was forced early by the Ambassador Paul Bremer against Marine Corps leadership advice. Generals on down were pissed. Poorly resourced, preparations were incomplete - Bremer forced the start 3 weeks early. Bremer then stopped 90% of the way to complete under the idea he'd negotiate with the bad guys. The second battle in November, the Marines decided they'd ignore State Department if ordered to stop before completing clearance of the city. All battle plans account for casualties. Only dumbass leaders wouldn't plan for dealing with casualties. -USMC LtCol, Iraq 2004, 5, 7, 8
Bremer might have been the forcing authority in country, but supposedly it was being pushed from the Oval Office for Inherent Resolve. Gen Mattis wanted to surround and cut off the city, but was forced to assault. Gen Mattis I’m pretty sure said something to the effect if you are going to take us off the leash then don’t try and put it back on which they did. Then came the Fallujah Brigade and gave them 6 months to reinforce positions and create rat lines for Operation Phantom Fury in November. I refuse to call it the Arabic name they changed it to or tried.
I appreciate that comment about leaders not planning about casualties. When I was a junior tactical level NCO it was initially hard for me to grasp that concept because of how we were taught for the GWOT. With LSCO on the table currently if you do not properly plan AXPs or a consolidation plan you are doomed to fail. Not to mention consolidating combat power post attrition from a decisive fight at a wet gap for example.
The plan included casualties….. that’s some heavy ish! You can tell he’s still going through some things. God bless the armed forces who sacrifice day in and and day out!
I feel sad for this man. I watched the whole clip, I didn't learn anything from what he did. Nothing was specific at all and was asked more times than I can count. Looks like he's battling demons. I was in that shit hole for 4 tours, not sure why the Marines get treated like that. Breaks my heart
You guys were taken advantage of. I'll always support those who serve but, I can't support the bull shit wars they sent you to fight. God bless you all.
Poor guy, you can see he’s struggling re living this experience he can’t even get a clear story out. You can feel he does not want to get into detail the way he stares off and looks. I hope he lives a long and fruitful life and is somehow payed back for his sacrifices. God bless our hero’s.
My brother, a marine during the invasion of Iraq, said the same thing as that delta fella said concerning how marines had the worst of everything. He always said the airforce guys had the best of everything.
I hope Alford is doing ok and has some outlet(s), listeners and help. Everyone digests things differently and I can't imagine seeing the horrors and mind-melting scenarios this gentleman has seen. I truly hope the best for him. Shawn, as always I appreciate that your interviews. They are ever bringing things to light that most people are totally unaware of. More respect is due for the protectors of our freedom!
seeing pics of delta always blows my mind, and never expected to hear a member speak freely on operations. a friend who was humint deployed with a team and worked with them for a while. he's one of my best friends, 100% not an operator and he always makes that clear on the rare occasion it's brought up, and still he won't talk much about it. not for some ptsd related reason, but just because he doesn't think they're stories that should be shared. obviously i like hearing about the exploits otherwise i wouldn't be watching this, but that image of delta guys keeping their history close to the chest has just stuck with me. you always expect seals to be the ones doing book and movie deals and interviews
I served in the Marines from 1992 to 1996. A large portion of my field gear was Vietnam era gear. The sleeping bag I was issued did not have an operating zipper and half the buttons didn't work. The rest of my gear was in similar condition. If you wanted to have good field gear, you had to go buy it yourself. If you wanted to pass gear inspections, you had to buy and set aside an entire set just for inspections. I worked in motor T as a logistics clerk. I was the guy who ordered the parts, scheduled preventive maintenance and whatnot. Our budget was abysmal. The mechanics would often organize scavenging parties at night and they'd cannibalize parts off of trucks from the better funded headquarters battalion down the road from our camp. It was tough, but we learned how to get by.
You can tell this man has sacrificed much for his Country. He relives the after effects of his experience, every time he thinks of this. God Bless him!
I can't freaking imagine one of those grim reapers circling in the air all night, hammering targets. And you're there sitting watching/hearing it all night. The range of emotions must be intense.
Best assessment of the Marine Corps I have ever heard. There’s an old saying in the Corps. “We have done so much with so little for so long, we can do anything with nothing.” And back then you trained for North Korea rolling south someday. And we were told hope you’re not in the first wave or second be it by air or by sea we expect 100 percent casualties. If by air they didn’t expect to the birds back. And it struck me as odd back in 1998 there was suddenly a change in training to a lot more urban warfare training no more patrolling and setting up LPOP. All urban warfare and fast roping. And some basic room clearing. Urban fire and maneuver. It’s almost like some had a crystal ball.
No one mentions my unit deployed in Sept of 2003 the 1st Armored Division from Ft Riley. Across the street from TQ and less than 3 clicks from Falluja. If you ain't Cav.. Toast to the Army's favorite son. Hail to the Brave Big Red One.
I went thru the SF Q course in 1991 after Desert Storm and there were several former Marine Recons in the course with us. They were proud Marines, but switched to the Army SF because the money for equipment, training and opportunities was much better in the Army they said. As a Army guy, I always had the upmost respect for Marines. I have often wondered why more young future Marines don't go the Army Ranger route?
I'm in my kitchen eating fuckin candy listening to this. You guys are better than celebrities in my book. The hard time this guy has is too real, to explain everything. So humbling and lucky to have you guys. We owe you our life.
In 2005, I deployed to Iraq in multiple locations to include Fallujah, leaving my wife and our new born son. We always thank our military members, but please also thank the military families, especially the spouse. We are still married for more than 20 years and there's no way I'd be alive now without the support from my wife.
My younger brother was a Ranger in Fallujah, we've never spoken about what he went through, but I can't imagine and am so thankful he came home in one piece.
How do we ever pay the debt we owe to guys like this? Truth is we can’t. Our country exists because of the sacrifices people like this made. I was humbled watching this . Thanks Shawn

I remember going to a firebase outside of Baghdad because my commander had a meeting and the Marines had recently took it over from one of our Battalions and the took the chairs and tables from the dfac and replaced them with stand up tables I asked a dirty, beat up looking Marine why they did that and he told me "the stupid corp always tells us we can do more with less". I felt so bad for that dude, it always stuck with me!
Mr. Grey is a very talented actor on top of being a hero. I love his character in Seal Team. Much respect and appreciation for both of you for your service and sacrifices as well as your families sacrifices.
During this time frame, my marine unit lived under a bridge for 7 months… BN CO bragged how awesome we were to go steal wood from other units to build “walls” for shade. Resources….
Op Phantom Fury? 3rd ID and 1st MARDIV, plus specials. That the was the First Battle of Fallujah, if my memory serves me, if I'm not mistaken. Lost several bros there, and some of my own hearing loss as well from those Yellow and Green plugs. Its coming back to me, and Task Force Bruiser tacked on a couple SEAL platoons as well.
Served in the MC 6yrs and he is soo right on that point. I humped a PRC-77 from Vietnam . But made it work. And I am sure our next engagement the Marines will carry the water for us.

The fact that you remember, recall and refer to previous interviews, you prod and poke your guests in a tactful way and you drive towards getting the truth in every guest is so refreshing in this space.
Agree on Mattis comment and the plan being crap.
FYI Tyler's last name is Grey with an "e".

Of all of your interviews, Shawn, I had to shut it off. Couldn't listen to part one completely. I listen to your podcasts one hour each way to work and couldn't stomach it. This guy is so real, it makes me sick. 😢 Hit a heart string. I pray for him.
This helps me hearing these stories because it tells me I’m not going through these demons alone .. sadly
ALL of Shawn's guests are fantastic! But the Delta guys are really interesting to listen to!! 👍
I've met Tyler and had the pleasure to train with him. Humble amazing man. God bless 🙏🏽💯⚔️🗡️
That guy is real deal and speaks truth! Tough interview,
Hello there matthew jesus loves you and repent of your sins so you can inherit God's kingdom and get the free gift of eternal life
Thank you Shawn for exposing these stories. Good job bro
that thousand-yard-stare on 6:23 gave me a shiver.

Hello there dan Roffee jesus loves you and repent of your sins so you can inherit God's kingdom and get the free gift of eternal life
Bremer might have been the forcing authority in country, but supposedly it was being pushed from the Oval Office for Inherent Resolve.
Wow ! He’s a bad ass ! He is on the TV show SEAL TEAM . Great show ! It’s great to finally see him on this show !

Same here. I learned absolutely nothing from that clip.

They are ever bringing things to light that most people are totally unaware of. seeing pics of delta always blows my mind, and never expected to hear a member speak freely on operations.
a friend who was humint deployed with a team and worked with them for a while. he's one of my best friends, 100% not an operator and he always makes that clear on the rare occasion it's brought up, and still he won't talk much about it. not for some ptsd related reason, but just because he doesn't think they're stories that should be shared.
obviously i like hearing about the exploits otherwise i wouldn't be watching this, but that image of delta guys keeping their history close to the chest has just stuck with me. you always expect seals to be the ones doing book and movie deals and interviews

He is doing his best to describe something to not incriminate himself, his buddies, his job, and for the people in charge to not come after him.
Nice bro. Try to get more Delta dudes on the show!

The studio looks fantastic Shawn.
Thank you for serving
I'm Canadian and thank you for keeping Canada safe! It was certainly difficult to fight against an enemy who hides in civilian clothes!
How do we ever pay the debt we owe to guys like this?
Truth is we can’t.
Our country exists because of the sacrifices people like this made.

Lost several bros there, and some of my own hearing loss as well from those Yellow and Green plugs. Its coming back to me, and Task Force Bruiser tacked on a couple SEAL platoons as well.
