    Yes, don’t buy a mac for gaming, but which mac to buy if you game 😊 MBP is a much better laptop than any gaming laptop for work and creativity, so being able to game a little is a big thing and much appreciated. Just got the M4 Pro-pro base model, just because of that.

    • @MorganTheGorgon
      @MorganTheGorgon หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      I knowww every time I've asked about this or researched this I've been hit upside the head with "don't buy a Mac for gaming!" Like I get it's not ideal, but most of the games I enjoy are on MacOS, and these days late model Macs can perform surprisingly well. Macs are easily my preference over windows machines in every other way, so it's hard for me give them up just for better game performance 😭

    • @kowalski864
      @kowalski864 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      @@MorganTheGorgon Yeah, sometimes I don't game for weeks or months, so if I got a gaming laptop or console, it would feel like obligation to do it more, to justify having it (I don't like having stuff that I don't use). I use my MBP everyday for other stuff, being able to game on it sometimes is a nice bonus.

    • @andreaslarsson4655

      That really depends on what you work with. If you work with some graphics related stuff or AI then a Nvidia ADA GPU will beat a MBP because you can use the GPU power.

    • @ParziGon

      Note that if you get a gaming laptop that of course gets more performance for its money (in games) but the special thing is how small and quiet it is for its performance!!! The m4 even fits in an iPad and maybe we'll even have the pro and max in iphones in the years to come - which would be mega performance for cell phones. A 4080, for example, is so much heavier and bigger than a minimac and much hotter and louder.

      @MorganTheGorgon หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Honestly they're way more helpful to me than intragenerational benchmarks, I wish more TH-camrs would compare to older models, especially M series chips because of how long people are holding onto them because of how powerful they are. If I'm on an M1 thinking about upgrading, it's less helpful to learn about how the M4 Max is X% faster than the M4 Pro than it is to learn about how big a jump it'd be from M1 or M2.

    Regarding Cyberpunk 2077, the game engine is apparantly scales extremely well with core count on X86. So if they manage make that same optimisation for ARM, the M4 Ultra would use all 32 cpu-cores (if it'll be 2xM4Max)

    As someone who uses and owns both Macs and PCs (Several of each actually). Honestly, if games were written to take advantage of Apple's latest chips the difference would soon be in Apple's favor and you won't need a power sucking space heater to have the best performance. Also, console gaming is starting to show it's age on current gen hardware. So I guess I would have to disagree with your first statement to some degree. We just need more games. That's what holds the Mac platform back for gaming. Then again, most Mac user don't care about games and choose Mac because it's better at everything else. I'm old, so not so much of a gamer, but it's nice to play a game sometimes on our superior Apple hardware. Currently deep into Cyberpunk 2077 and it runs great on my now aging M2 Pro .. and soon natively.

      My video game playing habits are a lot like yours. I want to just play the occasional new game, but mostly I'm doing other things on the laptop, or playing an older game. At this stage, the year over year gains for MacBooks are so massive that it's kind of dumb to buy more compute than you need in the moment and in the immediate future. Thus, I'm trying to choose between the base M4 and the M4 Pro binned. I'm honestly leaning towards the base M4, as it seems like it runs games like Cyberpunk just fine on a resolution that is perfectly suitable for a 14.2" laptop's screen. How many FPS do you get on your M2 Pro in Cyberpunk?
      The truly interesting MacBook Pro upgrade will be the redesigned 2026 models.

      @@Mads_on_YTI hope you enjoy your new M4 when you decide on the model you want. They are amazing from everything I have seen in the reviews. It’s so tempting for me to upgrade, but I’ll try to hold for now. In Cyberpunk 2077, running at 1080p, and pretty much everything on the highest quality I’m getting between 40-55 fps. That feels perfectly fine to me. The only issue is that when you enter a new area it studders for a few seconds sometimes. The great thing about Cyberpunk is that when the Mac version is released apparently it will be free to those of us who purchased it for PC. I believe they will do a great job on the port over.

      @@lonnygallant827 Thanks! I just placed an order for the base M4 model, as I was able to get it at a good discounted price in my country, with a 3 year warranty. The binned M4 Pro would have cost me 35,7% more, so I just couldn't justify the upgrade.
      The EU is forcing Apple to add user-replaceable batteries by 2027, so you might want to hold out for the first models that allow for this, which is either going to be the 2026 or 2027 models.

Plus this can handle Cyberpunk 2077 on battery mostly high settings no ray tracing at full resolution 70-80 FPS try that on a PC gaming laptop once you unplug it becomes a slide show. You can even comfortably hold it in your lap and not go deaf from the fans. Playing and installing Windows games could be a little more polished though setup with Crossovers, Heroic, and Whisky is a pain.

    Thanks for making this. I'm looking at upgrading my 2017 iMac to some M4-series computer, most likely an M4 Max Mac Studio when that gets released next year, some time between March and June.
    Something to keep in mind about Mac gamers is that while we do like to play _some_ AAA titles like BG3 or Lies of P, a lot of us like to play less-demanding indie games like Civilization VI (and soon VII), Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, Frostpunk (1 and 2), and simulator games like Cities: Skylines or Planet Coaster (both of which have recently-released sequels that don't yet have a Mac version, but could be played through translation like Cyberpunk 2077).
    Would love it if you could do a follow-up video that shows performance of indie titles like these, as it could help folks who like these sorts of games decide if maybe an M4 base model is actually enough, if they don't plan to play any AAA titles, or if they should still get an M4 Pro / M4 Max for some amount of future-proofing.

    Apple can become the best gaming platform for mobile devices like laptops and phones. I am not saying that the M4 Max will be better than the RTX 4090 mobile (even if it probably can be). I am trying to say that Apple has sold similar performance to the top cards in much smaller, compact and more diverse form factors. For example, the mac is slim and super performant; you can do so many things on it, holds almost a whole day on battery; it looks like slim-shady back in the day, And if you are looking for introductory pricing such as M4 Pro where the laptop price starts at 1400, it is a very competitive price, at least compared to other brands like razer asus etc. who sells their PC with similar build quality and performance for 3k. Apple used to be expensive and only for selected people, but not really. I am considering purchasing an M4Pro for daily use, my work, and a bit of gaming for 2k or 2,5 if I decide the same model put 16 inches. If I had the same quality laptop, I looked at on the new Samsungs, Asus, and Razers because I like their design and the form factor costs about 2x the price, which is crazy. People can say what they think, but I believe mobile gaming is up to Apple; for example, new iPad can support AAA games. Look at the iphones that support raytracing instead of Steam deck Nintendo Switch a few years in the future, and we will all play on our phones instead; I believe this is the way.

    Another very key and relevant discussion to consider is MacBook Pro Size. The 16” has a much more capable cooling solution and will enable the higher FPS values. The 14” cooling solution cannot keep up with the heat output of the Max chip under a gaming load. So even though you paid for a m4 Max chip, for example, you will get much less performance in the 14” chassis. It’s not worth spending the extra money of the m4 Max (vs the M4 Pro)on the 14” if you intend to game on it, and expect to get the best frame rates Apple has to offer. Don’t do it.

      The bottom line is For 8% more money, you get 27+% more performance. even the m3 max 16” is faster than m4 max 14” in heavy gaming.

I'm on an Alienware 17R4 i7 GTX1070 7yrs old and it's getting tired, as the subscription programs are always updating their software, which is taxing my dedicated GPU. Perhaps a higher graphics card is better, the 1070 was 8GB.

    Want want to be careful buying a M1 generation system now based on future support and longevity of the system. One might save a little bit but that system will be outdated or no longer supported that many years sooner than a M4 will be. It’s still a heavy investment and one that should be thought about carefully. How long that system will last should be part of that consideration.
    I would not advise to buy an older Mac right now. There is nothing wrong with them and some of us still have M1 series Macs that work great. It’s just that it’s still a lot to invest on something already that old. If on is ok only having it for a few years and moving on that’s fine. Just be aware it will be end of life three years before the M4 will be.

  • @Mandleaf
    @Mandleaf หลายเดือนก่อน

    I believe it is a bad review, that's why:
    As a reviewer, you should fully represent the Mac's capabilities by presenting gaming performance at the Mac's native resolution (what I mean by that.... a lot of Mac users will choose one of the macBooks, which naturally has a higher resolution. Additionally, statistically, most Apple PC users will use their machine with higher resolution displays, for example, for work purposes, creative-media purposes, etc. Don't forget the Apples primarily targeted audience!! Think outside of the box! So it should be fair to say that you should include other resolutions, too).
    When I buy a device, I expect to use it to its full capacity, and I expect the reviewer to do the same-to fully showcase the device's strengths and weaknesses (not only what is on the box, but also think outside the box ^^^).
    Especially since Apple has clearly stated that it wants to engage with the gaming world, you should consider it a gaming and (PRO)ductivity device and review it accordingly.
    Reviews should be unbiased, as it is easy to influence people based on personal opinions; reviews are not mere impressions.
    Additionally, I felt it was inappropriate to title a video "Which M4 Mac ... for gaming..." and later state, "Anyone watching this video is going to be better off buying a gaming console, PC, or laptop." As I mentioned, it's easy to influence people based on your opinion (and yes, I know you justified it later on).
    Consider other reviewers like Marques Brownlee; I think he never does that. He states facts, clearly discusses devices' capabilities and test results, and doesn't unjustifiably bias his opinion (as far as I know-I don't watch every one of his videos).
    When he shares his thoughts, he clearly indicates his personal perspective by saying things like "I have" or "I never felt I have to upgrade," instead of trying to convince the public not to purchase these devices.
    He also concludes his reviews with statements like, "Is it really worth it? I don't think so," etc., and still clearly states his conclusion without trying to persuade.
    On the other hand, the presentation of statistics and facts was clear and well-organized-good job. Additionally, adding a camera view at the bottom is a clever strategy. People tend to feel more engaged when they see someone else's face due to physiological factors like the activation of mirror neurons, which enhance empathy and social connection. That's a 200IQ move.
    Once again, it is not a hate comment. I am here to simply give you my feedback and hope for improvement if you find my opinion worthy. Most of the stuff spoken 'here' were minor details. Still, I believe these minor details set a boundary between very professional and successful reviewers and those on the bottom edge (no offence).

    If Apple wants to be taken seriously as a gaming platform, they either need to play nice and rebuild bridges with Valve and Epic Games, or go full-on competitive and create their own dedicated gaming launcher and storefront. The App Store is not a good ecosystem for buying games. To me, buying games on the App Store is like buying games at HomeGoods, and cross-device compatibility with the iPhone/iPad is not enticing to me as a gamer.
    If Apple wants me to break away from Steam to buy the Mac version of Death Stranding, give me a good reason other than "it's on the App Store."
