I've driven 5-speed most of my life, but just moved to Germany and got a 6-speed... I drove the car all the way home before I realized I had no idea how to reverse. Thanks a bunch!
We are struggling this morning because my housemate left her car and there’s a scheduled mowing for our lawn. We had to move the car and the car keeps on forwarding and almost hit our house. 😂 Thank you for this video. Now we know that there’s this security feature. Saved our day! ❤
Thank you so very much for this very helpful video As shows what is necessary. I was pretty much stuck in a rental Volkswagen camper van because I had completely forgot about pushing down on the shift to override the safety mechanism. I know many others have said this, but I’ll say it again your video was literally a lifesaver for me right now today! I would’ve been so embarrassed to have to call the renter back and tell him after I told him I knew how to drive a stick that I could not get this van into reverse. I wish you all the best and thanks again for your kindness.
Hi, thank you for watching and for the kind words 🙂. Glad the video helped, that's the main purpose of our channel. No need to be embarrassed whatsoever, every manufacturer has a gimmick of its own, who would remember everything? I remember a long time ago I happened to try and get an old Renault 4 in reverse. I managed to grow a small beard until I succeded 🙂. Happy driving and vacation and all the best to you from Despairrepair.
Damn!!! You just save my life😂😂😂I’m working for a valet company and today is my first day driving a manual transmission I was struggled to find the reverse but it’s all good now Thank you😂🙏🏾❤️
This video completely saved us in Scotland. We rented a car and could not for the life of us figure out how to put the car in reverse when we were stuck at a dead end. We were about to go find some stranger and ask them to help. Thank you so much for posting this!!

You're welcome and thanks for watching! With German cars it's not that obvious, on the contrary. Btw, great channel and much respect for the martial arts. Trained a bit of judo myself, always regretted stopping.
05:02 Not all cars makes that click noise 05:00 (you were talling about) when engaging reverse, mostly older non synchronised reverse gears with straight cut design makes it newer cars tend to be silent when engaging reverse
I was trapped with my husband not being able to reverse our rental car in italy- stuck in the mountains. This saved us and our trip thank you thank you thank you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes! This video really helped me with the courtesy car I have been given - the reverse was driving me mad. Lift up the thing underneath the nub - so easy when you know. Thank you Despare Repair!
Hi and thanks for watching! Glad if the video helped, Opel's from that era have that ring under the gear knob, just like some Renault's, hard to figure out. These situations are one of the main reasons why we made this video. All the best to you.
Hi and thanks for watching! The old-school way is to fiddle around with the gear shifter (pull it up, push it down, see if there's any safety ring, switch, or else). All car manufacturers have a gimmick of their own which is in most cases, easy to spot and use. A bit crude method, but in most cases effective. Hope this helps.
Omg I thought this video must av been a prank...do people really need guidance to figure out how to put car in reverse...not meaning to be a dick snd sorry if im coming off that way but I swear im genuinely gobsmacked that this is actually for real.
Hi and thanks for watching! Watched your video and to be honest it shouldn't be that hard. It looks like a real struggle. My father-in-law has a C class (LHD) with that kind of shifter so I know. I’ve got a question how do you go from reverse to 1st do you go back to neutral or ?
Hi and thanks for watching!
Yes, the gear lever should pop out of reverse first, go into neutral, and from there go in to 1st.
