Much 19th century piano music doesn't include pedal notation but yes, you'll want to use it.
Just picked up Heller's 20 studies book. Are you strictly following the pedal indications in this recording? I find that some pedal throughout the piece helps gluing it all together, or maybe my legato isn't quite there yet! Any advice?
Yes, I seem to remember it's pedal throughout for this one ...but to support legato fingers! Enjoy this set of Studies - I think they're wonderful.

In the grade 5 syllabus it says repeat. What does that mean ?
Good question! I've absolutely no idea as there are no repeats in the music. Perhaps we should write to ABRSM to find out?
I have emailed them and they said
There is a repeat of the opening 4 bars of the study. Please ensure you are looking at the correct piece.
So it seems there is a repeat in the 20 miscellaneous studies book.
