You guys are incredible! We’ve already got up to 168 donations in the #HungaryWithWillie fundraiser for my documentary travel series this fall. If you’d like to contribute, just head to www.withwillie.com | all contributions are welcome! No amount is too small. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Going to make you something amazing this fall.
Hey Willie, great video again! I suppose crowd funded donations shall be even more by now (including mine for example). I'm also a big fan of Hungarian history, especially of our antique origins and medieval part of it. I have some surplus of related books which I'd gladly send to you if you can read in Hungarian. Pls let me know if you're interested. Cheers!
Hi Willie! If you wish to catch a pair of huge figures in Hungarian history, check out Hunyadi János a törökverő! Man he was the hulk of the time! As well as Árpád! Árpád has carried out the Pozsonyi battle that is taught in the US as a strategical achivement for naval purposes. These dudes knew how to punch back and both was stratigic masterminds.
You can be surprised, because we don't have a 200-year-old culture and we welcome all normal people! You have a lot to learn, I hope you succeed. Anyway, welcome!
...you will need better translation. Or at least use youtube's native subtext system, that way if you mess up it aint baked into the video. You were speculating that "Hajduk may have been mercnaries or independence fighters of some sort" That was written as "A hajdúk független harcosok voltak" = "The hajduk were warriors independent from anyone, not ruled by anybody". ...i guess its technically correct. Arguably a more correct description than calling em bringdas of the balkans. Still its not exactly an accurate translation of what you were saying.

As to the history of Ottoman rule... ...well its not seen a "shameful part of history". The partition of the nation into 3 chunks is seen as a tragedy - one part under the catholic habsburg rule, one part under Ottoman rule, and the last part creating the principality of transsylvania, which was the some times vassal of the Ottomans. Regardless all this happend during the years of reformation, and when european wars of religion, and religiously motivated violence (on level with contemporary ISIS) was a thing. As such it was not exacly a unique take among protestant hungarians, that "Ottoman rule is superior to Habsburgs". And the tragedy of the destruction of the old kingdom of hungary is only partly due to "we dont have a country anymore". Most of the terriotry that used to be the kingdom became a warzone for over 150 years among these 3 powers - thats where the severity of the tragedy lies. Its also why "King Matthias Corvinus", has a HUGE popularity. Even though he was one of (if not the) strictest rulers in our history. As the guy - and his dad - managed to stabilize the declining kingdom, and strengthen it to a degree where it finally was not on the backfoot against the Ottomans, or the Holy Roman Empire.

Please do not spread wrong History!!! István was not the first Hungarian king! Our origin goes back to Nimrod who had two sons, Hunor and Magor! At least 10 000 years ago! István was a traitor, who sold out the country to the Christian invaders! Hundred years earlier we defeated the unified European forces in 907 near Bratislava. You man please do not spread misinformation about our History! Please!
István was the first king of Hungary, the first Christian king of Hungary, with crown from Rome. Nimrod, Hunor, Magor were not kings of Hungary, they did not live in Hungary. They are figures in legends, it is not even certain that they actually lived. And if they did, it was on the territory of present-day Iraq and not in Hungary. There are many people in Hungary whose ancestors came to Hungary during the Turkish occupation (1526-1686) and they spread such stories to create their own "Hungarian" identity.
10000? Too much pálinka in the morning. wake up man. Not even Greeks have 10000 years of continous history. Not even talking about ''we'' since Hungarian is an extremly mixed nation after living more 100 years together with Slavs, Germans, Latins, Jews, Balkan people and much more. We are not even 1% of DNA of those came here 1000 years ago. We are mixed between the above mentioned ethicities. Take it as fact.
