- Now that the ECM is back online and talking on this BEACHED WHALE Nissan Titan, we have some wiring harness repairs to do.
JustAnswer.com told the owner to CUT ALL SIX 5V Supply wires at the ECM for some reason.
Let's see exactly which wires were cut, verify wiring integrity, and try to put Humpty Dumpty together again.
Will the Titan fire up and DRIVE off my lot under its own power?

I guess the owner thought he was defusing a bomb cutting wires like a hero on some 80's action movie 😂
A Titan bomb
Die hard toilet scene
On the plus side, it didn’t go off !
😂😂
That is Awesome! 🫢😂🤣
Sitting for a year and you fixed it in 1/2 a day ! It really helps to know what you're doing !! LOL
I have to admit when I first saw the carnage under the hood I thought holy crap, or something like that. I most likely would not have touched it, but that is a poor attitude on my part. I think Ivan looked at it like a wounded animal that needed help and He just rolled his sleeves up and nursed it back to good health. Great attitude and another valuable lesson.
It’s amazing that they instructed the customer to just cut the wires! 😂
It’s amazing the guy actually did it.

One word that comes to mind is patience when working on cars as a DYI.
DIY perhaps ? Never heard of a DYI…
@@paulsz6194 , Depends. if the issue is that frustrating, you may want to "Do Yourself In" 😛
Never ceases to amaze me how people short of time and money will fire the parts cannon but never stop to perform a diagnosis because it "costs money".

The morale of the story is not to ask for a discount with a professional mechanic.
After you screwed the truck into the ground just be thankful that Ivan even agreed to work on it.
The public has a LOT of nerve, especially as shop rates are SKYROCKETING. They will walk in and announce, "I can only afford $x.xx, and I don't pay those ripoff diagnostic fees, just for the REPAIRS." 😂 They also weaponize social media and ratings platforms if you kick them out, or they "FEEL" unsatisfied. I no longer entertain the public, only business-to-business, for that very reason.
Ivan, I think you do a great job of communicating what needs to be done. A lot of people do not have the background to understand what you are communicating until they watch you for awhile. Keep up the great job!
True words
Ivan is a very diplomatic businessman.
I've seen kids with 2 year AA degree from auto repair trade school, that are $40k in debt to student loan system, and they still hookup battery backwards, and are generally LOST. Some people DO NOT have the thought process to be a mechanic. When they become discouraged, it's off to DENTAL ASSISTANT school next 😢. [...or court reporting]
Watching you solder all the cut wires made me think that it was lucky that the owner didn't cut them flush to the connector. Great work, Ivan! Even the Amazon throttle body seems OK!
Cautionary tale for all the DIYers - this could have been an expensive adventure!
I had a kid call me to come over to his apartment.
He has engine problems.
So he bought a used engine. And he called a mobile mechanic for help.
He said the mobile mechanic installed new main bearings and rod bearings.
The guy just an impact wrench to tighten everything up.
No torque wrench required 😅😅😅
I come over. The car tries to start. I noticed the O2 sensors are not hooked up. ??
I see the O2 sensors ends laying on the top of the engine.
I ask??
He says, the wires were in the way, so I just whacked them off.
I said. You just push this thingy and it will pop loose. He says. Really!!
I said yup.
And no wonder the car will not run.
After a few tries, the engine kicks to life. Then rattling and knocking noises. 😅😅😅
He shuts it off.???
I tell him. Wellll, when the mobile mechanic didn't use a torque wrench on critical fasteners, you get this.
@@2nickles647 Yep, these nonsenses come in all forms and shapes!
@@2nickles647 I have a feeling the kid WAS the mobile mechanic.

Two things to emphasize, don't fire the part's cannon and know when to stop and ask for help before cutting wires. Great work and awesome that you have empathy for the DIYer!
I just fired the gasket cannon on a 20K mile engine that has been sitting in my garage for 7 years. Why risk leaks when it is easy to get at everything while out of the car. Plus it let me put some assembly lube on the crank and cams up top for the big reveal. Fathers day goes VROOM. Just need to finish the AC system.
You need to ask the right person. And that person is hard to find. There are a lot of people who are right - in their mind anyway. Retired mechanic in Land Down Under who is learning heaps from Ivan.
@@bobhudson6659 me too here in the states G'day mate
Ivan, you are an inspiration to us Diagnostic Technicians. I use many of your phases in my Auto Tech Classes. "Don't fire the Parts Cannon unless you are 110% sure." I even recommend my students to view your channel so they can develop troubleshooting processes. Diagnosing and Troubleshooting is an Art that not everyone has. Some can learn it, others will never grasp it. You're hard work is greatly appreciated by many of us. Don't fret on the 1% of non conformers.
After a series of mistakes he finally made the right call...Ivan!
At least the owner was smart enough to send Ivan the truck. Nice simple repair.
Or he was told, enough is enough
But dumb enough to go chopping wires.
Eventually, anyway. But I'm not convinced this wasn't Keith pranking him...
Lmao "are you serious?" Yeah bro I just plugged everything back in 😂😂😂😛
Well, he had to program the ECU to the VIN but, yeah…
I don't think the customer was paying attention enough watching your videos, I think they watched it more as entertainment.
Then, when a major issue did arise, they resorted to shotgun diagnosing and parts cannon because people don't want to invest the time to learn how to properly diagnose these types of problems.
Ivan is a great teacher. Customer is a flat out a butcher. Wouldn't want to live in any house or structure the handyman builds because probably a collapsible death trap
Maybe before you return the truck you should put a lock on the hood and keep the keys
🤣🤣🤣
Don’t cut wires. lol. Another great video Ivan. 👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Don't cut wires, and if you DO fire a parts cannon, KEEP the original parts so if you come begging for help, it can be properly fixed.
Saturday morning coffee with Ivan , no parts required, excellent
Actually you can blame the owner especially since he "Claims" to have watched your videos. Your method of diagnosis is methodical and straight forward and takes the parts cannon out of the picture and if parts are required it is the last step after careful consideration of all the facts. Cutting wires may have a place in diagnosis but not at the hands of someone that does not understand the circuit to begin with.
As I said before throw your parts money into a one hour Diagnosis from a tech and then you have a good place to start. Thanks so much for taking along this journey out of the Rabbit Hole.
You replaced the washer hose and now the truck is fixed, amazing Ivan!
🤣
Make sure Ivan you give him his HUGE DISCOUNT 🤣🤣🤣. That’s hilarious. He ask for that
The discount will be NPR and like only 2-3 hours of Ivan's time wasted. Any mechanic could have fixed these issues, honestly. This was not an Avenger's Level Threat, yaknow.
@@brassmule I think a lot of mechanics just would have looked at the mess and refused to work on it.
It's easy to say in retrospect it was an easy fix, but until you get into it you don't know. Maybe you forgot Ivan had an email correspondence to get the full history of work done to it, (which can either hurt or help).
Despite the owner stating he has put too much into it to stop, there is still a chance he will think any repair is too costly.
He said "another shop" reprogrammed the computer, but who busted up the connections?
If the computer was as it was then how did they program it...(of course it seems like it wasn't)
Customer is gonna be in for a wild ride when that ECM comes unplugged!
Read the summary😄
I love these no parts required videos.
I've only deliberately cut a wire once, and that was after research in a manual not garbage information on the interwebs. Kenwood radios use a clock signal running out to microphones that also have a keypad. They use untwisted, unshielded wire for some reason. So the clock signal ends up bleeding into the mic circuit, and you get an annoying 1Hz click - 1 PPS in engineering speak - when you transmit. You can't hear it but everyone else can. The solution, if you never need the key pad, is to snip the clock signal wire. I go a step further by creating a small extension to the mic cable that doesn't include that wire because the wire can still act like a transmission line even when cut.
Chalk up a win for Ivan!
I really didn't think the vehicle would be back on the road this quickly. Really Great one Ivan!
I've been waiting all day for part 2! WooHoo!
Same! 😂
Makes 2 of us!!😂
As an electronic technician for over 40 years I never used butt connectors always solder connections.
Avionics technicians always crimp. Solder is a big no-no for stranded wire in general but moreso on anything that vibrates like cars, boats, and airplanes. The FAA even calls this out for repairs.
@@major__kongI don't about airplanes, but car manufacturers do solder wires. They use marine grade heat shrink with adhesive . I just cut down a few ls harnesses for standalone swaps. The grounds were all spliced, soldered, and heat shrinked from the factory. I rather solder than crimp. I just got some cheap butt connectors bare from Amazon. None of the crimps would hold. I just tossed them and soldered ...no issue now.
@@thdevilmancometh if you buy the cheapest crimp connectors, they will work as well as the cheapest solder you find as well.
@@thdevilmancomethGM factory authorized wiring repair, at least on my 2014 GMC, is shrink wrapped butt connectors.
There isn't a soldered connection from the factory.
Capillary action causes solder to harden the strands and vibration can break them.
When Ivan said they recommended cutting wires I could not believe that he actually did that. Not going to say anything more here.
My new throttle body from Amazon is a success.
At least for now LOL
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 👍I’ll just get another one. No sense try to beat the system. That’s the signs of the modern times. Made in China.
For how long was ?
In every video you emphasise the importance of testing the basics: power, grounds, bent.pins, mechanical damage to looms and of course the infamous “Green Crusties”. If viewer don’t do this that’s not your fault. Great videos. Tony (Wet, cold, windy UK)
Let's not be too hard on the owner. Yes, he botched up a repair job, which I have also done, but who hasn't? At least he finally brought it to a pro. Let's hope he learned a lesson...
In my youth in the military I was trained in the electrical diagnosis of power generator systems. From 1.5 kw gas to multi-fuel engines to include turbine powered generator systems. I experienced some weird stuff. But, what they bring to you takes the cake. Awesome work Ivan.
Your patience with connectors is amazing I have learned so much over the past 3 years Thank you
Dunno what was worse...
Being told to cut wires...
Or actually cutting wires.....
Don't beat yourself up. You explain just fine. Sometimes you have individuals that will do the opposite. I have had that scenario several times. Tell him to do A, B, C etc. and immediately as I am standing there just finished explaining and they do none of it . Had one guy so bad showed him to click screen here, here, here and here and could not do it after repeating procedure 6 times he still could not do it and got mad at me as our company needs to have a better training program as he could not do it. His employee completed it after watching in the background and he then got mad at him and employee got in trouble. I could only feel his pain of having to report to someone completely incompetent.
That would be the same type who would kiss the a*s of his own boss but treat those under him like sh*t. Problem is his type are the kind who often advance in a big company. I can think of one major a*s kisser at the company i worked at and it worked out great for him. I have a few stories about him. Electrician who did work for his bosses at their homes on company time (guys often saw him leaving the premises in a company van, drive out the main gate, and be gone all day) and then he went into management. Wink wink.
First two things before working on a vehicle...bright and tight battery connections, and the oil level.
Eric O has to get the Hyundai/Kia PCMs unlocked by someone else so that he can rewrite the VIN onto the PCM,it can be rewritten once but after that you need to send it to a person who specialises in unlocking these PCMs.
As I said on the last comment,it was probably a little s**t who was playing a prank on your customer online by telling him to cut the wires in the wiring harness, the customer believed them !
Wow! That's almost as much fun as rewiring a 1949 Chrysler after an engine fire!
IVAN this may sound corny but you really are one of my idols. I think I've seen 90 percent of your videos. My wife makes fun and teases me that I watch you instead of going out shopping with her and stuff , lol.
Another great pair of videos for a case study. I love your common sense approach to fixing things.
Desperate people do desperate things. The cheapest solution is never the best. Too many variables in today's models and the learning curve stretches to infinity ♾️. Job well done and another happy driver.
It is evident that the owner is a bit out of His wheelhouse in this realm, but he tried and I think soon realized that and chose the appropriate solution. Some of you here need to be a little less critical at times like this. It all worked out great.
Love it! Nice job Ivan and it would have been even easier if the wires hadn't been cut. The Amazon throttle body works for now.....
First time I have ever disagreed with you Ivan in that I think you do an excellent job on your videos. I watch a lot of mechanics on YT just to learn, and your channel is the one I definitely look for the next video. Many of my friends and family have benefited by having me to check out their vehicle problems. So far I am batting a thousand on diag and repair knock on wood. I’m bragging on you not me. Lol
Absolutely a great job on this one Ivan.
I bet it had no 5 volt ref on a driver and the PCM was the issue.
Glad he brought it to the right place!
Another satisfied customer🤗
Nice work Ivan, pretty much what I expected. 👍👍🇺🇸
Your teaching skills are amazing, I've learnt alot.
IVAN, I waited one day but it looks so long waiting for part 2 as always AWESOME fix and approach cheeeeers from Canada.
Much respect and honor to a very good man especially one who takes the time.to teach such as Ivan
I hate to bet against Ivan because he is always correct.
Bravo. I enjoy your victories
There's more to the story about how those wires got cut. You're doing a fine job on relaying information. To utilize it though, you have to have tread softly. Doesn't make sense to ever cut a wire. I think just ask was pulling one on the owner....
First of all, you do a very good job of explaining what you do and how you do it. I wouldn't change a thing in your presentation. I would, however, emphasize to the customer that he might leave the diagnosis to the professionals before he cuts more wires or fires the parts cannon. You didn't say if you offered a discount, Ivan. Since it was NPR, I would say you just charged him a diagnostic fee and sent him on his way as your good deed. GREAT VIDEO!
Thank you for educating us. kind regards
Great job of explaining what to do. You can't force people to use correct advice
Maybe the loose battery cable caused all this.
Too bad Ivan couldn't replace all the original parts.
I've seen a couple of repair vids that turned out to be a blown fuse caused by something simple, or even just fuse swapping.
9:30 place bets = Begin chasing cheap aftermarket parts, that caused the troubles to begin with.
Great job Ivan
I see that all too often. Thanks Ivan!
You're out of your element Donny! Walter to Donny in the movie The Big Lebowski.
I too have noticed that my thinktool pros does wonky things from time to time after an update. But it seems to sort itself out eventually. I know what you mean about the patches though. My Launch X431 Pad II has the option to keep an older version in case you need to roll back just because. It's one of Launches best features and why I love it so much. A feature I wish thinktool would adopt.
Maybe they need a reboot/reset from time to time?
@@Cheepchipsable Are you talking about a factory reset? I'm almost certain that Ivan has done that with his. It's not necessarily an issue with thinktool, but with the Launch software they run. But once Launch gets word that a reproduceable bug has been found in their software, they are pretty quick to release a patch.
Well done, young man.
Iven you do an excellent job of explaining how to diagnose the problem correctly
PHAD, you deserve a layup after the AUDI air ride series.
great video thanks for your time
You do a good job, Ivan. Some people just don't understand. I can see a DIYer getting frustrated and changing parts, but cutting the wires? That seems like he may not understand a lot of what you are doing.
That's part of the problem, a skilled person makes things look easy as often the underlying knowledge doesn't come through.
There are so many bots posting comments all over you tube, they sound like an alien is posting.
Well i am totally sick of the CENSORSHIP that goes on over on MSN. For example, some guy made a sarcastic comment to a MSN linked article saying, "when was Toronto ever in the Stanley Cup playoffs". I made a comment back "someone doesn't know hockey history". MSN censored that reply, "community guidelines". What the hell was wrong with that to warrant censorship? I have been censored countless times by those clowns at MSN. No bot here.
Bravo.
I enjoyed this.
Thank you PHAD. Apprecite the video. Your at the top of list in Automotive Diagnostic videos. Great job.
Thank YOU for your support, Richard!

Brilliant Ivan, as usual. At 🇬🇧 prices I'am sure it would be cheaper to put you on a plane and get you over. By the way love your office environment. ❤
Justanswers told me to stick a bean burrito into the air intake to fix an issue I was having with a tpms sensor. I've done that but it's not working so I went ahead and replaced the fuel pump and crank sensor. I would like to get this to you, towing from California. I'm expecting the same discount that you gave this gentleman. I'm also leaving both the red and green sauces for you in the passenger seat in case you need it for the bean burrito. I didn't cut any wires so it should be pretty easy for you. I did cut off all the valve stems on the tires though since that seems to be required for fixing tpms timing codes.
Cut the wires instead of just unplugging the connector. lol Thanks Ivan!

fixing a car is a battle , and if you wanna to win ,you must have a weapon " wiring diagram "
And "brain" 😂
We back in business the launch out doing the think tool pros lol
I don't want to hear you bitchin' about Amazon throttle bodies anymore. 🤣🤣
I'm sure it won't last long LOL!
It doesn't matter how beefy or tough something looks. When it comes to wiring, cables and connections, you have to be careful and meticulous. Things need to be tight, right and clean.
You are the KING . 😉
Great job Ivan. I had a Nissan that.a shops $3000 Snap On couldn't read an OBD code and my $12 Crader read the code then asked me to confirm it was a Nissan or some other brand I can't remember.
Posilock connector are nice for a quick test connection. And work if the wire are in a oil bath
Nice job .
Cutting wires to fix electrical issues? I think we found this year's Darwin Award winner....
No electricity, no problem!
Amazon throttle body and eBay pedal for the win!!! LOL (I was definitely thinking those would be an issue)
Well done.
That's a win
I couldn't believe that it fired right up and ran perfectly 😆
"Just" answer... There's two meanings. Just answer it, no matter what, there needs to be an answer. If you need to go somewhere with your vehicle, just have it towed, that is also an answer.
And a "just" answer could also be an answer that is correct and the right thing to do.
It's hard to believe that this owner has been watching PHAD vids and then proceeds by cutting wires, messing up connectors, fire the parts cannon, because of just another answer. It's more likely that he stumbled upon PHAD after messing up his vehicle.
There is always someone who thinks they know the answer, even without having a clue about the subject matter.
Amazing outcome. Did not expect you to resolve it so quickly. I think you need a new T-shirt "Don't be a Gorilla!" 😂
Awesome work there Ivan.
If you were 700 miles closer I'd definitely have you look at the issue im having.
Loss of communication between several modules.
Have you tried cutting a few wires?
Haha, NEVER!
If you have some basic skills and tools and access to diagrams,
- check powers and grounds, fuse or fuses
- is anything else on that network talking?
- When you put a multimeter on the CAN wires, do you see 120 ohms or 60 ohms?
- do they all talk to the same gateway?
it's one thing to watch videos and another thing to understand. give him an "a" for effort but maybe a "d" for comprehension. i've worked with enough enthusiastic people who want to do but just aren't cut out for it.
and an F for execution...
Thank you, that's amazing Ivan, you sorted it now I can use it for work, I'm so happy! How about my discount?
Don't know why people believe that cutting wires is going fix a problem , it left the factory with all the wires in tact and it was running . If this guy considers himself to be a handyman, I wouldn't let him work on anything I own. Nothing wrong with your videos Ivan, just people's lack of ability to learn from what they see.
Well the fact it was running before he cut the wires should have been a guide that untouched wires probably shouldn't be messed with - but apparently some in the comments think he should still get a gold star for effort...
That went much quicker than any of us expected
As per the owners request for a discount, hope you only gave him only 1%. You deserve the full price for your great work Ivan.
Don't reward stupid.
I would love to see a video of you just explaining your short to power of ground testing . As a stand alone video. Showing ohm and test light work . Maybe white bord or a really simple circuit and why some times you use a meter and other time a test light
Just go back and watch a bunch of the older videos when You have time, He makes it all pretty simple. Many of the older parasitic drain videos cover your inquiries.
