Thanks for sharing your experience. We had a similar situation too, it's just not very reliable when flying without the controller.

I have flown Neo several times with the DJI Fly app, it works fairly well (though it is much easier to see an iPad sized screen as I had previously used with a Mavic Pro). I would recommend using the DJI Fly app in Manual Flight mode, or an RC controller, for flights over water.

I do not think that it's some AI problem. The Neo has an infrared diode that is directed to the ground. You can see it lighting up after turning the drone on with a IR sensible camera, f.i. a smartphone camera. It probably uses it to light the space beneath the drone in case of low ambient light and a camera which is also facing down is reading the surface below the drone. A normal surface has a unique structure which can be used to detect the drone movement over ground. This is why DJI specifies a reflectivity of more than 20% for the positioning system to work proper. Water has no fixed structure, it is constantly changing its appearance, nothing the drone can take as a reference for telling which way it is moving. If the Neo also has a ToF sensor (Time Of Flight) as the Mini 3/4 Pro f.i. these may also not work over fluids depending on the sensor.
I would not hang the AI saying too high for this small drone. It has some well elaborated image and sensor processing which allows it to do some clever things. But AI is a bit of a big word for that. In the end it's just a little drone with some clever software on it. No neural network for sure.

Thanks for the input, very insightful. I agree; the bottom-mount sensors are probably to blame, but I have not tested this with the RC remote control (yet). I found that using the intelligent flight modes seems to be where the deficiencies over water are notable, and in manual mode works over water without issue. I will more than likely fly the Neo over water using the RC controller, just to be safe. I would like to test over water under various lighting conditions; the day I flew where Neo lost me was bright sunlight, highly reflective shimmering water with winds causing ripples. I am curious if darker, stagnant water will give better results during intell flight modes (not sure on difference of reflectivity %s, if there is any, hmmm). Moreover, I wanted to put this out to new Neo users just to give info and how to switch over to Manual flight mode, in order to save their Neos from a watery death!

The Neo has a very weak GPS receiver, made by DJI themseves instead of a proofen module as on the other drones. So after power-up it may take a long time until it has a GPS fix. And if you are using the Neo's standalone functions it will usually already take off while the GPS is searching for a position fix. In case of flying over water this can lead to missiong orientation and therefore drifting away. Tpp bad there is no warning an takeoff delay in case of missing GPS fix, not even the app will warn about.

I’ve done some test flights with an RC controller. This alieviates the lost connection issue experienced in the intelligent flight modes. I suspect future firmware updates will help with some of the Ai issues. But, when I’m flying over water, I will use an RC controller or the Flight App.

Thanks for sharing. I kayak fish... however I don't have the nerve enough t venture on water other than my dock. I have used manual mode but. I am afraid of losing connection once over the water. I do have the RC N3 controller which I will start learning to use....over land first...then when I am more comfortable I will try over the edge following the lake shoreline. I have seen a lot of water shots with the neo...using RC n3 controller or fpv googles. Keep posting more water videos and good catching!

Awesome. My RC2 just arrived today, so I will be using that this week. The Neo is quite the intuitive little drone, so far I'm pretty impressed when compared to way more expensive ones (such as Mavic Pro, which I flew for work).

The Neo does not work well indoors even with all the lights on. When I go from one lighting condition to another it just takes off forward in a split second at high speed out of control and crashes into whatever is in front of it. It won't fly indoors for more than a minute or so without going out of control and smashing into something. None of my other dozen or so drones have this issue including my 5 other DJI drones, even the cheap little Mavic Mini and the Tello work fine indoors. DJI Support told me the Neo is meant for outdoor use only even though the users manual says otherwise. I bought the Neo to fly indoors during the winter. Starting to see tons of blogs on this issue. Many people are experiencing similar issues. It helps to strap a light to the bottom of the drone but, there is no good place to strap it because the battery and camera are in the way. I figure DJI will have to address the issue at some point. Nice aircraft otherwise.

I have tested the Neo inside my house, it did fly without issue. However, this was during the daytime, with plenty of light coming in the rooms (I have not tested in low light). I agree, for the money, it is a nice drone. I'm hoping DJI will continue to release firmware updates to address some of these common issues in the coming months (especially the inability for the drone to function over highly reflective surfaces like water). I have flown the Neo over water and ice (frozen rivers) in full manual mode with a controller without any issue; the problems seem to be in the Intelligent Flight modes.

That is whythe have disclaimer not to use it over water. But sadly people are just too stupid and keep trying what is not recommended and then complain..

fancy buying a drone that says in the instructions "do not fly over water" for a fishing channel lol

Well, isn't that the purpose of pushing out videos on things like this? Trying to give some helpful pointers to new(er) users, whom you call "Stupid"? You do you, I will do me. I paid for the drone, right? Don't like it, don't watch the video. Pretty simple fella.

Hey fancy that, I bought and paid for the Neo, I'll use it as I want. Neo flies over water, just search 'NEO over water' videos. Some have crashed em, some not (like mine). Just trying to give some info on how to properly recover the Neo if they don't have an RC remote controller.

@@fishtacoguy well u do it for the views.. that is why u posted a video of it over water when in fact it is clearly stated not to fly over water... People who cannot follow instructions are called stupid or arrogant, am i right?? are u trying to point out that DJI is wrong in claiming that DJI NEO should be okay to fly over water.. u did that video cuz u think u can outsmart them and prove that it can fly over water.

Do NOT use Neo in follow mode over water. Period.

Agreed. Use manual flight mode on DJI Fly app, or use an RC controller. Hoping this will save a few Neos from a watery grave.

First, I clearly said DJI says NOT to fly over water. I also said this is a fishing channel, so I'm going to be on water, and will fly it over water (my choice). Second, I never said the Neo was shit (not sure where you can up with that). I like the Neo! For $199USD, it's a great, intuitive little UAD with decent still imaging and better than average video (much better results can be obtained with the RC controller and tweaking of video settings in PRO mode). The main goal of my video was to give the new Neo user info on how to switch to full Manual flight mode, in order to save their Neo if it loses tracking abilities (which it will) while flying in Intelligent AI modes over water. I have an RC controller unti, it just arrived yesterday, and I will do some tests using this. But, in short, I would recommend if anyone choses to fly the Neo over water, do so in manual mode on the DJI Fly app or by using a compatible RC remote.
