- During the second part of his now legendary Stax sessions, in Memphis of 1973, Elvis recorded a cover of a song first written and recorded by Chuck Berry almost ten years earlier. Elvis' version, recorded on 15 December 1973, is a much more powerful driving version, and much like many of the more maudlin ballads that Elvis recorded in his later career, reflected his personal life. His interpretation of "Promised Land" certainly reflected his professional life, a point not lost on the producers of "This Is Elvis" in 1981, who used a version of the song to highlight his intense touring schedule.
It is ironic therefore, that Elvis actually only performed the song on tour a handful of times, an these are all included in this compilation.
Version One - 19 August 1974, Opening Show - Las Vegas
Elvis' now infamous but short lived revamp of his set list at the beginning of his August 1974 season in Las Vegas, saw Elvis introduce three songs from his new "Promised Land" album. These included the title track, but whilst "If You Talk In Your Sleep" and "It's Midnight" would last the entire season, "Promised Land" was dropped after show three of the twenty nine show engagement.
This show was one of the most sought after in bootleg circles, and was finally released officially in October 2008 on the “Nevada Nights” set.
Version Two - 6 October 1974, Afternoon Show - Dayton
This rendition is the first of only four known renditions performed by Elvis whilst on tour and not in Las Vegas. Up until the final tour of the year, 1974 had been a good year as all of Elvis’ shows throughout the year had been of a high quality. However, this rendition is taken from the eleventh of fiftee shows during what is widely regarded as one of the poorest of his career and certainly the worst up until this point.
Version Three - 18 March 1975, Opening Show
Back in Las Vegas again and another opening night and as was normally the case on these occasions, new songs from a recent recording session were added to the set list. This often meant that some songs would make way but “Promised Land” was retained and this is quite a funky version.
Version Four - 24 April 1975 - Macon
The only time Elvis performed the song during his superb Spring 1975 tour.
Version Five - 20 July 1975, Afternoon Show - Norfolk
It is quite conceivable that Elvis performed the song during this show due to the city location of the concert being part of the lyrics!! Despite the poor audio, just listen to the screams and cheers as he mentions “Norfolk, Virginia”!!
Version Six - 23 July 1975 - Asheville
Every show that Elvis gave Asheville was superb and this was no different and it was during his second of three consecutive tour ending shows in the city that Elvis gave the final rendition of the song.

I love everything Elvis has done over the years especially the rocky songs, but this song is probably my favourite so I'm going to take my time a little bit later and have a good listen to this. Long live the King 🤘

Thank you very much Leon for this particular upload!! Believe it or not, Promised Land was THE FIRST Elvis song I ever heard in my life!!! I distinctly remember hearing it when I watched Men In Black in the theaters!! I thought to myself: “This guy can sing!!!” I did my research, and boy, was I right!!! It led to a world of beautiful music!!! Thank you Leon for the memories!!! Aloha.

Elvis fakes his way through a few lyrics that he forgets but the crowd laughs along with him… You gotta love that he chose this song, & of course response to the early mention of Norfolk goes over really well!
