Lyrics : The trees down in Georgia Grow as tall as a cross Where little Richard was singing Where rock n roll learned to walk Country blues in a bottle Get those tubes running hot Til the serpent starts hissing "Y'all let me out of this box" Streets of gold Ain't that red dirt clay Leave some peaches in a basket by the pearly gates When my race is run Hear that angel sound May the good Lord show me mercy Send me back down south Send me back down south Sweet Carolina From the north to the south Where those reapers be hot And they put those tears in your mouth Papa's got a new bag He gave it to Mr. Brown And Charlie got him a fiddle Before the devil went down Streets of gold Ain't that red dirt clay Leave some peaches in a basket by the pearly gates When my race is run Hear that angel sound May the good Lord show me mercy Send me back down south Send me back down south Way down in Macon Put your ear to the ground Where the brothers are sleeping And you can still hear the sound Of a band that was singing About a sky that was blue They sang it for me And now I'll sing it for you Streets of gold Ain't that red dirt clay Leave some peaches in a basket by the pearly gates When my race is run Hear that angel sound May the good Lord show me mercy Send me back down south Streets of gold Ain't that red dirt clay Leave some peaches in a basket by the pearly gates When my race is run Hear that angel sound May the good Lord show me mercy Send me back down south May the good Lord show me mercy Send me back down south May the good Lord show me mercy Send me back down south Back down south
In particular, it’s what Rebecca does with her vocal in the second half of the song which is so clever, so understated and just so, well, fucking perfect that it makes me want to cry with being touched so deep. In this era of vocal over singing it is just so beautiful!
I bump into this....Some seconds later, instant subscription....Killer riff, old school overdrive on a lap steel, feminine cool attitude, amazing voice and a song that travels you down to Georgia even if you are listening it from Greece!
This song hit me on the perfect day. Yesterday, i was sitting outside in my rocking chair watching a storm approach in our glorious hot, HUMID Mississippi southern weather as i listened to music and read the MS news. With all the uproar and division going on in our nation and just recently in our great state of Mississippi, I just had to share this song on fb with my many friends and family from all over the world bc it paints an appropriate picture of the beautiful heart and soul of the majority of people of ALL colors who are born and raised in my area of the USA and that i was born and raised in!!❤️ I posted a simple reminder to myself and others to “be kind while still standing strong for your beliefs and your community and to smile because you never know who is in need of that hello and that genuine smile at that precise moment.”✌️😙🎶🇺🇸
Yeah, blues sisters and brother, take me "Back Down South"! 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸 I've been listening to so much LP that when I listen to other musicians they sound strange and less. Rebel Yell, Slide Queen, & Texas T make our blues world a sparkling, very special place to be. 💖💖💖💖💖 Blues rock fans' lives just wouldn't be the same without the Southern delight of Larkin Poe's music! 👍💖🎸😎
My husband is a paranoid schizophrenic....and the song "mad hatter". Really explains alot! I wish that you would make another song about mental health. I work in the health field and I can fix your broken bones but I don't have a clue as to how to fix the mental aspect! So thank you for making the public aware of mental illness!! Beautiful song and so true!
Ladies, I saw you in Chicago when you opened for the great Detroit rocker Bob Seger. Started following y'all then, and I absolutely love this song. Every great southern rock band has a song playing homage to other southern bands. And here is yours. Keep up the work and bless southern rock
dude everything about this is incredible.... there's not enough women in the industry making great music with real instruments. female singer/songwriters are SORELY underrepresented. young girls usually just aspire to be red-carpet divas who have their music written for them by a team of pop-producers; usually old white men LOL... Larkin Poe is so goddamn refreshing they're restoring my faith in a generation I assumed was all but lost to computers, MIDI controllers, synthesizers, and auto-tune machines...
The Lovell sisters are a tornado! Tornado of Blues rock from which don't run away, it draws you in and dissolves you in the gentle drive of Megan's guitar and Rebecca's voice that is like the wind reflected from the Grand Canyon.
A memorable return to the UK of their recently completed 2022 many highlights. And Tyler on.stage with them on.the final night of the tour at the chalk venue Brighton 😎😎
Glad Grammy recognized LP! Much much deserved. Their melody caresses your soul and riffs hit you hard. One of the best bands of this era among all genres.

Lyrics :
The trees down in Georgia
Grow as tall as a cross
Where little Richard was singing
Where rock n roll learned to walk
Country blues in a bottle
Get those tubes running hot
Til the serpent starts hissing
"Y'all let me out of this box"
Streets of gold
Ain't that red dirt clay
Leave some peaches in a basket by the pearly gates
When my race is run
Hear that angel sound
May the good Lord show me mercy
Send me back down south
Send me back down south
Sweet Carolina
From the north to the south
Where those reapers be hot
And they put those tears in your mouth
Papa's got a new bag
He gave it to Mr. Brown
And Charlie got him a fiddle
Before the devil went down
Streets of gold
Ain't that red dirt clay
Leave some peaches in a basket by the pearly gates
When my race is run
Hear that angel sound
May the good Lord show me mercy
Send me back down south
Send me back down south
Way down in Macon
Put your ear to the ground
Where the brothers are sleeping
And you can still hear the sound
Of a band that was singing
About a sky that was blue
They sang it for me
And now I'll sing it for you
Streets of gold
Ain't that red dirt clay
Leave some peaches in a basket by the pearly gates
When my race is run
Hear that angel sound
May the good Lord show me mercy
Send me back down south
Streets of gold
Ain't that red dirt clay
Leave some peaches in a basket by the pearly gates
When my race is run
Hear that angel sound
May the good Lord show me mercy
Send me back down south
May the good Lord show me mercy
Send me back down south
May the good Lord show me mercy
Send me back down south
Back down south
Thank you!
