I came over 15 years ago and yes I brought with me gifts for the parents and her sisters only. Sure, i brought a bunch of candy to pass out. Nothing to big. I brought a few bottles of booze and some coffee for my mother in law. I didn’t consider the small gifts I brought as being excessive. As well i brought several towels and slippers for everything. I was happy to do this and they all where very appreciative of my gesture. I was informed prior to coming that this was the custom here. I never felt used at all. Keep the gifts simple.

#1 Mistake sending money to a Filipina before spending time together in person. Even after spending time together you need to limit how much you give. You can tell them you are more than willing to help in certain situations but only after you get married..

It's called pasalubong.
It's a tradition here.
Now, she was clearly abusing him. It started when she asked him for a necklace.
Jessa has never asked me to bring anything specific other than a few big bottles of tressame shampoo and that was after a long way into our relationship.
We met in manila when I was there visiting my uncle and she was working in his office.
After a year of ldr we went to her province to meet her family.
First thing her mother done was greet me with a hug and welcome me. Then she kicked off when she found out I was staying in a hotel.
"You are our guest. Our guests stay in our house, not in a hotel.
Then just like you said I was put sitting at the table and fed.

I said "no. Its not my table. I will wait for everyone else to sit"

Loneliness is a powerful feeling! It sometimes gets to a point that people do things like he did here. He was in love with her and wanted to beleive they had a future together.
Hopefully he will heal and learn from this painful experience and try again. Try/fail, try/succeed. Best wishes to him and may this be a good lesson for everyone else that may be tempted to go down a similar path.
You dont have futures with someone that could be the age of your daughter ..It is fantasy and all they want is for you to spend money on them ..Men grow up and get smart
I think this may have played out exactly as she wanted. She got a $3K diamond ring and never had to sleep with him. She knew that if she was incredibly rude to him, he would eventually leave her alone.

This guy has no one to blame but himself. He had no idea that she was like that before he came to the Philippines? After months and months of communication (texts, chats, messenger, FaceTime, etc…) he had no clue? Once she threw the necklace back at him, didn’t he consider walking away then? What she did was absolutely wrong, but he LET her do it. Meeting/picking your life partner is probably the most important thing that a person will do in their entire life. More important than your career or buying a house or buying a car. People can spend years planning those things out, but then they get taken by the first girl that they meet because they didn’t do their due diligence. Hopefully he learned his lesson.

This will continue to increase as we keep simping and just giving away our hard earned money. I understand we want companionship but at what cost? These women are using us,not all,. Mike you are so wonderful of a communicator and knowing how loneliness feels and how the mind plays tricks on you. You’re a master communicator. I only bring chocolate and I’ve always been appreciated for that. Or always felt treasured with every Filipina. They have never asked for anything. I never use online. There are so many Filipinas to select from when someone is here. For me it’s way to risky to introduce being seduced with online dating. There’s no need to. Every where I’ve gone I always meet Filipinas if that’s what I want and sometimes I just want my own company which I truly enjoy. Great content and helpful to many men

I can't develop those feelings for anyone online there's no physical interaction.
When I meet someone online that I find attractive and I like their profile and interaction I can only take it so far and then I run out of things to talk about. I can't commit online because I know once I get off the plane I will be surrounded with many attractive options.

@gesto70
Don’t send money before meeting. Even after, set a cap and that’s it before marriage / moving to the United States. Keep in mind all the costs of food, hotel, grab, activities are on you during the trip. No to extravagant engagement rings…go to a local shop and get one 250-500usd. This is enough for a modest gold solitaire diamond ring. This will be huge for a woman there. American women have been told what to expect due to commercials and friends showing off huge rocks…with guys going into large amounts of debt compromising the couple’s future. You can upgrade later. The reality is coming to the Philippines is such a big step, financially and otherwise, that should count towards something.
Do not expect or ask her to pay half on anything. Make it clear about family and friends…pay for a dinner but no to hotel / Airbnb….

Heres the way it should work. When I met my wife 45 years ago , we were 24 and 22 . she didn't care what I did for a living , the car I drove , or my bank account. she just wanted to be with me. I was average looking, but I was a hard worker and I was a gentleman and respectful of her family . she loved me for me , and that made me be a better man , a better husband , father and provider. 45 years later, we have 3 adult children , grand children, a nice house in California and a comfortable retired life . If God took my wife home to heaven , I would be ok to live the rest of my life alone unless God brought to me another person just like her , but although different too , But someone with the same traditional and Christian values . I will not settle for less. If I need a care taker, I will just hire a care taker. Getting into a relationship with someone who is out for financial gain is problematic.

Agree Sinfulz, the necklace thing was unbelievable
You are 100% correct!! He should have left her when she rejected the necklace.
Confusing a 'good heart' with feeling bad for a homeless person and giving them money might not be a good comparison. You can be a good person and not give money to a homeless person, you might volunteer your time or give money to a charity. Some people don't understand that 'giving money' does not equate being a good person, this is the reason some are taken advantage of financially because they get pressured to give more than they should.
Exactly.
Mike, you are proving the point of never sending money to someone who you have not met in person and you have not spent time with, unless you do not care about the money.
Hello Mike, I have had a few Filipinas try to make Me feel bad because I wouldn't send Them any money. It didn't work on Me. I have known My Fiancée for over 8 years. We are engaged now. I will be going back to the Philippines in June for My third trip since We got engaged. She is very tight with money and won't even buy a new cell phone when I offer to buy it. But We enjoy visiting different Islands together. This trip We will travel from Cebu to Mindanao. Dumaguete to Siquijor Island and then back to Mindanao. Men can get company in the East in so many imaginative ways. Just throwing money around achieves nothing. Some Asian young women prefer older men. Some also want a decent place to live. Some like travelling to see other countries. Some are students and want a place to live, study and feel safe while at university etc.
a lot of Asian ladies like older men
100% Agreement Mike. I believe I would have left them at the resort let them find their own way home

Regardless, Roy should have known better. It’s your money, it’s your responsibility. It’s good he reached out for advice and had the emotional discipline to follow it. Too bad it cost him quite a bit. Hoping it didn’t hurt him too much. Do the world a favor and release the name and pic of the Filipina.
I was waiting to hear how much he spent on that trip.
Hmmm not sure of the total
OMFG, I would have turned around and went home so many different times in this story. I get it, he's 8 thousand miles from home, but at least go back to a hotel room and do some reflecting.
He should have at least KEPT the ring (not given it to her). Query: Mike, didn't you say the family sent him pics of the fridge, etc. they wanted him to pay for? Bet those things were NOT in the house, hence why he was not invited in. What a bunch of snakes.
Well, count his blessings, and dollars, at least in the end he ghosted her?
Man, this was hard to watch. Trust your instinct and never give out money like that. Plain ridiculous what did he expect?
Yeah, and they leave their relatives high and dry while throwing $$ at strangers.
This happens often to alot of insecure men..desperation,is the culprit women sniff it out ,then its a all out manipulation,if you want know if she cares look directly in her eyes .YOU'LL KNOW!
boots on the ground
Pasa Lobo, did bring some chocolates (M+Ms w/peanuts) for the kids and remember bringing some other stuff for the family when first visited there. Thats expected when travelling and arriving back in the Philippines after a long time. So make sure to bring something for everyone, even if its not expensive the first time you go there. You may get invited to the familys house to stay for your trip, just remember to offer to pay for your food travel and electric, its not free to them and you are saving a lot by not staying in a hotel. Its true the family there will respect you, and your girlfriend will be proud of you, just be respectful in front of her parents.
Remember that one of the cousins came by and was begging for money for medicine and my then girlfriend said no no no and told him that he just wanted the money for alcohol...lol Am sure he wasn't embarrassed but it was funny to me at the time.
Definitely feel sorry for Roy, but feel you have made some good points about giving money to an LDR before you have met them.
