    Hi everyone! This is Sandy.😊 I'm so appreciative to all the feedback & especially Mike for doing this video. Again, thank you so much Mike.
    I have lived in the country most of my life & so a smaller city could be one that might be easier to adjust to. I had even thought of Valencia because of the little bit cooler weather & perhaps a bit lower humidity at least in the beginning. I would have to make sure however that I could get a trike/transportation. I guess I could learn to drive a scooter. 😂 (Hey, up until a couple years ago, I towed an RV & went camping by myself.)
    I'm not going to pick up & sell everything when I come. This will be a sort of trial run. If it isn't for me, I can always return to the States. However if I like it, I can stay & return back to the States for a visit & tie up loose ends at that time.
    Obviously, medical coverage is a big concern for me. Even if I can find coverage for 70 & over, it will most likely be too expensive. I cannot afford several hundred dollars per month. My thoughts are paying out of pocket for more minor things & should I need long-term medical care/ something like cancer treatment I would return to the States for that. There is also the option of flying to Guam where I would be able to utilize my Medicare coverage.
    Btw, the mention of becoming a vlogger while in the Philippines is something I've thought of as I certainly didn't find much info from a female's point of view while researching the Philippines.

      Hello Sandy! It's very interesting to see an elderly woman doing something that so many elderly men have done. If they can do it, so can you. I don't live in the Philippines myself, but I was married to a Filipina for 14 years and have a lot of experience spending time in the Philippines. If you feel like video chatting with me for some free advice, just drop a line here how I can contact you.

      Hi Sandy . I'm not sure what part of the United States you are from but my wife and I are in Texas preparing to sell a home to move over to the Philippines full time. we have a home in Oton just outside of Iloilo .. if you would like more information about Iloilo and the surrounding area feel free to contact us anytime with questions you have. I personally think that you would do just fine in the Philippines. but it's very helpful if you have a network of people to help facilitate your surroundings.

      Go with Mexico, close enough to the US. Remember western men are moving there because of the us women and finances. So you might get treated different. It's quieter and you can shoot up to san diego for medical if you prefer your medical treatment. Also there are more retired American women there with a lot of group activities. Good luck

      Sandy, never doubt yourself!! You are old enough to know, we Americans can do anything we want if we put our minds to it!! Paul is correct!! Iloilo is a great choice!! Clean, safe, lots of the conveniences Americans are used to!! I am in the process of looking for land and building a home!! Now for your budget, you will have to downgrade your living experience!! Best thing to do is find an expat who’s wife is willing to work with you!! Paul is a good person to listen to!! I wish you luck and remember we Americans can make it happen if we really want it!!

I live in Cebu in a fabulous subdivision with a pool, store, and clubhouse. There is every nationality in this subdivision. I'm a digital nomad and I still work doing what I love to do. The most important thing is to establish contacts with people BEFORE you get here. The most important thing I heard was "go where it's best for you".

    We have a lady friend who is over 70 , alone and been living here in Valencia for years now. She walks everywhere and keeps her health up. Your friend Sandy doesn't necessarily have to live in a big city. Depends on her preferences. For me, I'm not going to just live somewhere just to be close to a hospital or mall. Big city can be a lonely place too and quite overwhelming just moving here. I have everything I need usually nestled here at the foot of the cool mountain in Valencia and 15 minutes jeep to almost anything in Dumaguete. And btw, you can still find nice accomodations for $300.

      @ThereIsSoulInArt : Another reminder/vote to not overlook Luzon. Your rental budget concerns me, as it did Mike, with regards to Ilo2 City. I’m not there, but another vlogger whom I consider reliable has noted rent is increasing (of course, everywhere), but esp in his observation in Ilo2. He has many real estate contacts & has lived there nearly 2 years; so I tend to believe him. I am new on this channel so I don’t know if this content creator would object to me naming other creators. But Ms Sandy, you can easily find the channel. It is a well established Ilo2 channel, there are many - this is the gentleman recently separated from his 1/2 Filipina wife…..Have you considered area around Cabanatuan City? I closely follow ANOTHER vlogger, a young Hungarian woman, who has lived there 7+ years , married to a Filipino. I mention her becoz in a vlog in past 6 months she redid her prior budget blog, & indicated she thinks more budget conscious lifestyles are still very obtainable in that area. She noted others seemed to be finding it more challenging in various areas, but CC was do-able. It isn’t cooler there, but there is Baguio & cooler mountain areas in Luzon, like in Ilocos provinces or Batanes area of Luzon. For food, it is more affordable but of course best budget friendly would be to shop markets versus big box stores which carry more Western choices/options. Besides vacationing in Phil, maybe consider (if you like cooking) , trying to prepare more Philippine cuisine /meals. Contrary to what many seem to think, it is not all lechon or adobo chicken. Fish & vegetables are very abundant & usually more affordable. Not all veggies are inexpensive though, & some of our Westerner faves, like a vlogger mentioned broccoli isn’t cheap or always an option, unless you live in certain areas like Cordilleras or other mountain areas. Sorry so long, but you inspire me. You are brave. Though I write that, I think it is totally doable. The main thing is your cardiac status is stable b4 you go. With health, an independent, open minded, appreciative & adventurous woman at 70 can do it. I agreed with all Mike’s advice, too. Esp joining a church. But I wouldn’t negate or overlook Catholic Church (even if you don’t join formally). Though a “big tent” church, there are smaller clubs & associations & other potential social supports within the church. The Catholics are a major force in the Phil & will be plugged into many events & the fabric of the society. There are many women we honor as Saints that left their homes behind to travel to foreign lands, of similar age to you, Sandy. In times with even less conveniences than nowadays! I can’t recall names of all, but Marianne Cope & Theodore Guerrin were both in their mid 40’s when they left their homelands. But that was in 1800s when lifespan was less. So their 40s were I’d say like our 60’s at least! (Lastly, Luv ur YT handle).

    I would recommend that Sandy, since she's retired, do a 3-month exploratory trip to the Philippines. I think one month is too short a time for evaluating for retirement but would be fine for just a short vacation on 1 month. It takes time to settle in to a new place and get use to life in a new country.
    Health care: this should be a big concern since Medicare won't work in the Philippines and at her age, comprehensive insurance is costly but Phil-Health would be better than nothing. On the plus side, Dr visits are a lot cheaper than in America. Iloilo area has some excellent hospitals and one of the few that can deal with heart issues, including bypass surgery and cancer treatment just like St. Lukes in BGC without the extra cost of living in BGC.
    The walkability in Iloilo is wonderful from what I've seen (as it is in BGC) and the public transportation options are good too and still improving. I think the $300 rent will be hard to find--when I was looking into renting there the prices were more like $450.

    Well I’m having my mom move here next year… and she will be 80!! lol but she is very spry and still works full time. We cannot afford to move south (from Western New York), and she absolutely hates the cold. We are taking 30 days to check out the various islands and looking at rentals from there. The humidity and breathing I think could be a factor with being in the Philippines until you acclimate to the climate. Mobility and the uneven pavement is something that I never would have considered. Now verses this dear lady from Ohio, my mom will have Christine and I with her. Wanting to make sure that she has travel insurance while visiting for the month, I think also would be recommended, for anyone taking a month to visit. Always one trip, one sneeze away from having unsuspecting medical issues. Besides Philhealth, I’d have a chat with the guy from Pacific Cross about possible alternatives. Health should be prioritized and if you’re on a fixed income, self insuring or out of pocket can be too much. But I love that others are coming over, aside from finding love. The Philippines has so much to offer and can put you at ease verses the states. Do not skimp on something’s that can really stress your life if you don’t have to. Preparation is a key factor to success here.

  • @gudfarfar
    @gudfarfar 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

    I think that the lady has to come and visit for a longer period, so she can decide where to settke down and seek out a good place that suits her style, wallet and noise level. The Philipenas are not bothered by sound, while we find it bothersome to hear chickens, dogs and all other animals all day and night, not to mention mopeds and scooters with little to no muffler on their exhaust systems. Find an air bnb and really get to know the place and some of the people, and you will probably see where to hang your hat for a while. Find a good neighbourhood and look for rentals that is in your price range. Better yet, if you come to some of the places where there are some expats, it is usually not hard to find them and make connections, or even ask one of the youtubers to help out, against you giving an interview on their channel.

I’ve thought I would like to visit the Philippines not to live but visit and have been watching plenty of TH-cam videos and I don’t care about who’s marrying who it’s none of my business, I would be there for the travel experience and I suspect this woman probably feels the same way.

  • @Learning.Naturally
    @Learning.Naturally 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

    Sandy, It sounds like a great plan, the warmth of the Filipino people is extraordinary. As with any man moving to the Philippines, I would suggest having a monthly income of at least $2,000 and having a minimum emergency fund of $20,000 and having $2,000 for getting settingup when you move here permanently. The trial run extended trip is spot on. For the medical, keep your medicare so you can head to Guam or the States for something big. Philippine health care is great for the medium and small stuff, but it's all cash up front typically. I had an ER visit for a virus and the cost was $8.50. There are some positive expat groups and then there are others who seem to delight in hate, yes hate, for Western Women. Ignore them or give em hell whichever you wish. Most of all have fun, relax, meet lots of people, try new things.

    It’s nice that this woman would consider the best living conditions she could find with the money she makes. With that said, she must also consider a Living Will. While she still can think for herself. And yes, I know she doesn’t make that much money. But at some point, she’ll have to go to convalescent hospital in the Philippines. And who will make the decisions for her at that point.

    The MAIN issue I can think of is medical. At that age more and more people need more and more care. Most health providers will not offer their policies once you are 70, UNLESS you had a ploicy before 70, then is typical to 100.
    Otherwise go for it, you only live once.

    She might want to consider Subic Freeport Zone. It's a self-contained community with it's own private security, restaurants, groceries, at least 2 hospitals, golf courses etc. Not to mention that it also has a duty free shopping so she wouldn't have to go to Manila in case she wants imported stuff. Other places which might suit her are Baguio and Tagaytay, two places with cool climates. Both places have good hospitals, restaurants, malls, etc.. She can also look into retirement communities some of which have their own nursing homes which would make the transition easier when the time comes that she needs more medical attention. Travel time from the latter to Makati is about an hour by taxi or bus if she needs major surgery.

God forbid if you have a stroke or heart attack while on a cruise and you have to be airlifted to the nearest hospital onshore and of course if you can handle sea sickness. The chance of survival is much lower even with a ship doctor and nurse on board. Not all retirees want to be constantly travelling especially as they grow old they would eventually need a home base with good healthcare. The Philippines has also been getting a good share of cruises lately from what I've observed of recent tourists going to Intramuros.

    I see so many issues with this situation that if it was me I stay in the US and find a room mate, sort of a golden girls arrangement. Three hundred US dollars is province level standard of living. Health care is substandard in places she can afford and unless she has a lot of money saved, she will be stuck in a developing country alone. Men can find a woman to take care of them but a 70 year old woman? No nan wants a woman that age. Better stay in her home country than to risk moving to a country like the Philippines.

    I would always recommend a trial run. Even if I was looking to move back to the PI, I would do several trial runs. I lived there 7 years but it was in the 80's when I was in my 20's and things have changed a lot I'm sure. You don't know how things will go until you get boots on the ground. Maybe the heat, the foods, the noise will be an issue for you. I don't think my American wife would fit in well for more than a visit. If I were single though, I'd go in a heartbeat but I'd still start with several visits. Liquidating everything and starting again in another country is a huge decision/move.
    On the other hand, the cost of living is great comparatively, most people are friendly and there is plentiful natural beauty. Especially if water sports (like diving and beaches) are interests.
    An American friend of mine just passed away and his Filipina wife surprised me. She has family in the PI but has lived in the US for the last 35 years. I thought for sure she'd consider moving to the PI but she intends to stay in in the US.
    I do think the gender roles favor expat males in the PI but that doesn't mean a female wouldn't also be happy there.

    It amazes me when you hear bloggers suggesting that people keep their home and property don’t sell anything then just come out for a month or two and see if you like it.First of all it can be a horrible 22 hour flight that nobody wants to do one time let alone two three or four times and secondly 99% of retires don’t or can’t throw that kind of money away on a site seeing venture. And I’ll guarantee you most if not all of these bloggers didn’t follow this advice,in the perfect world yes but in the real world no.Oh and she’s 70 years old she should go for it and if it doesn’t work out just go back home that’s much easier on her 🤷

    Hi Mike, Great topic. I think you have touched on what could and maybe should be a good theme to continue with: Expat women being welcome too! As you were talking about Iloilo compared to Dumaguete or Cebu and speaking of uneven streets/walkability I thought of the blind guy (sorry I forget his name) who I think is friends with you and Paul. Uneven streets dont seem to deter him? The point Im trying to make is that maybe its time to explore this topic more? The "click-bait" topics for men, I honestly get tired of and I will intentionally "not click' when I feel Im being baited. Im not talking about you now. And I respect the other "tubers you associate with. Just speaking generally. There is a theme that men (only?) come to SE Asia to find a young woman and restart their youth. I personally don't see why it couldnt also apply to women?
    But maybe we should leave it to beautiful Corin of Filipina Unfiltered? Okay, over and out, live well, Dave

    I'd like to tell sandy something as a 68 year old retiree been here 2 years like mike. He may take a little something different cuz the woman thing but i really don't but i still 100% for everyone no matter your social status money whatever please come here first. For you depending on your financial status i would suggest coming for at least one month. If you have decent money you know besides social security or whatever you're doing maybe spread it to two or three months if you'd like to see a few different sections of philippine life. Manila would be for something like a new yorker chicago and something like that if you want to you know have a similar lifestyle as you have at home. Cebu is a more biggie city too what has more philippine flavor to it so you'll slow down some there. In negros oriental where i met something like bacolod might be good for you bigger town has everything you need and some country feel to it. Prices are highest in manila of course cebu bacolod will be similar good luck to you!

    Sandy what Mike says is sound advice. I would not hesitate in saying yes as a single person, you should definitively come and try out The Philippines as a retirement option. If you were my mum, sister or female relative i would still give the same advice and wouldn't hesitate to say to them, move to The Philippines Permanently. Not sure if you have heard of it, but research Baguio City on the main island of Luzan about 250k from the capital Manila if you are chasing a cooler climate in The Philippines. Having said that, you may have to do your own research as it's in so far as the cost of living. It's a truly beautiful city high up in the mountains. Next bit is Copied directly off the web.....Baguio, on the Philippines’ Luzon island, is a mountain town of universities and resorts. Called the “City of Pines,” it’s particularly popular in summer due to unusually cooler weather. At its center is Burnham Park, with gardens and a lake. Nearby, Baguio Cathedral, completed in 1936, has a rose-hued exterior. The main thoroughfare is Session Road, lined with shops, restaurants and entertainment options. I wish you all the best. 😊

When I want a city life I go and stay in my condo in Manila. I travel by bus for 3 hours journey. My neighbors in the province are very helpful and I can ask them to run errands for me and pay them which they usually refuse to accept but I usually insist to help them. Same in Manila the guards in my condo are also very helpful. I would suggest stay in a condo but if your budget is only USD300. -(Php16,500 approx) it might not be enough to live on bcuz one bedroom in a condo costs approx Php18k. But you can have bfast, lunch and dinner for Php750 (USD16) in an SM Mall.

Now if Sandy is anything like a lady that I know (That I will call Laura) then she will do fine wherever she is. "Laura" is 75, she drives a 40 ft motorhome with a jeep in tow behind it. I am 57, and I tell my wife that if I were single and 10 years younger, I would ask "Laura" out on a date. That is how youthful she is. Your advice to give it a shot on a visit before taking the plunge is absolutely correct. Sandy should get a Doctor's advice on how to make the trip, based on her previous health issues. Maybe a couple days layover in Honolulu, then a couple days in Tokyo then the final flight to the Philippines. Mike you are giving very good advice, a good support group for Sandy is important, in the Philippines or the US. Sandy, Please accept my Best Wishes for whatever you may decide to do. Take care.
