We were cruising during Hurricane Sandy. There was damage throughout the ship, including having to close the Windjammer due to the loss of some windows. They asked us to stay in our cabins and brought sandwiches and snacks around to the cabins and even opened the Internet and some phone lines so we could contact people at home to check on things. Not a big deal, Royal Caribbean took good care of us and we never thought we were in peril. Some people, however, were sure we were doomed and were about to repeat the Poseidon Adventure. We had a blast!
Yes I've had ports cancelled. No biggie, always leads to an unexpected stop somewhere else or an extra sea day. I trust the Captain's judgement and either alternative works for me! Yes, I've had rough seas. Not the line's fault or the crew's fault. And I always book a cabin high and forward because I enjoy feeling some sea motion (Navy veteran).
I was just on the carnival breeze 1/18-1/23. The seas were so rough on the way back to the gulf that it had a bunch of us praying. It won't stop us from going back!
I too would like to offer my services to the captain with regards to operating the ship. I have a %100 perfect record of safety with my remote control boat in my pool with no issues, no accidents, and no harm to passengers or wildlife.
We’ve been on ships that were late leaving port and ships that missed ports due to the weather. It’s never been an issue for us and we’d never leave the ship.
My first ever cruise was in December 2006 and it was pretty stormy when we left Miami. It was a 3 day cruise to Nassau with a stop at Coco Cay.The weather was so bad we had to bypass Coco Cay and go straight to Nassau.I didn't mind we got to spend 2 days in Nassau instead and of course I didn't blame Royal Caribbean and I didn't hear anyone else complaining! We had a fantastic cruise and it surely didn't stop me from booking another cruise
Navy vet here. Something that people need to realize is that late December through early March (AKA winter) is actually the worse time to cruise. I can only give my experience on the Atlantic Ocean but cruising during this time of year is actually worse than doing it during hurricane season because hurricanes can be navigated around. Once we navigated around seven active hurricanes between Rota Spain & Jacksonville NC. In reference to story 1 & 3, unless you deal with this weather on a regular basis I don’t care what kind of job you have it’s not the same. That would be like thinking because you use your pickup to tow you can drive a semi truck. Also, there’s a reason why cruises are often cheaper during this time of year and weather is a main reason for that.
Our first cruise ever was on NCL. We had an itinerary change after final payment for fuel optimization and I thought it OK as we got better and longer stops in 2 ports I was really excited for and the last port which as shown as not tender was now tender. So I thought it a good trade. Then we sailed into the port and the water was rough and even though the tenders were in the water, no one was really excited about trying to board one. It took 3 hours until the final call was made to skip the port and we were in the theater waiting for the decision for most of 3 hours. Once the decision was made, we heard that we were sailing out for scenic viewing and we were going as slow as the ship could go. By three hours later, I had an amazing time watching the scenery going by and going to the thermal suite. By the time it was too dark to see much, the entertainment was in full swing with special events like a sushi demonstration and trivia filling in till then. By the end of the day, we had had the best time of the cruise. Of course, later in the day, we sat next to the party who was next to us in the Stardust. They had been upset in the theater and were still upset. One person said their cruise was ruined. Exact same circumstances. We were on the same excursion and we were sitting next to each other the whole time. We had the best day of our cruise and they had their cruise ruined. When we cruise, we feel we spend way to much money to let stuff get us down. Especially when we can find all sorts of fun stuff to do! A cruise is not something that happens to me. The cruise line lays out a 'buffet' of things to do. You decide what to put on your 'plate'. I could complain that the buffet now does not serve shrimp like it did before... But I look at the fact that the buffet that is absolutely wonderful and allows me to cruise longer and for less money than our previous style of travel. Based on our trips to New York we still have schedule between now and our next cruise, we will be spending twice as much per day! And the cruise is more fun. And I am going to do everything I can to make sure I enjoy it.
The one that normally get cancelled is Grand Caymans because it is a tender port. We did not stop there and did not have an alternate port. It was just an added Day At Sea! Did get port fees refunded.
Our first cruise was in October of 2012 during Hurricane Sandy. We mostly avoided it, but CocoCay was cut short. We were able to enjoy St. Thomas and St. Martin. On our way back, the pools and deck were closed due to high winds. We had a great time playing bingo, watching shows, etc. I was hooked on cruising after that. We of course didn't demand a weather refund. Some people have no common sense.
I have been on many cruises where the seas are rough. Captain does their best to get around it if possible. Was on Adventure OTS when hurricane Milton delayed our entry to port canaveral. Extra day at sea, no problem. I trust the captains decision if the weather does not allow safe docking. He or she knows what the ship can do and can’t do.
So, the barge was supposed to be magically teleported from the Mississippi River to the Bahamas?? LOL! Would take at least 3 days to get there and it's not even a tug. 2. I've had about 5 stops canceled due to weather. Disappointing, however, deal with it. 3. Weather and seas have nothing to do with the captain or ship. They just do all possible to give the smoothest journey possible. Many years ago I was in the deep Caribbean and it was so rough, there were only 22 guests in the dining room for dinner. Even many of the crew got sick.
Customers should not expect refunds - except for port fees and prepaid excusions - if a port is missed (or the duration of the stay reduced), due to inclement weather. However, it's not acceptable to miss the destination port, as passengers booked accommodations and flights for/from that place.
Yes, I have had a bad experience at sea, but then again it was my fault rather than the cruise line's, because I chose a cruise that went through the Bay of Biscay in the storm in January, and it was 70 knots of wind.
My wife and I were on a Carnival cruise several years ago where we encountered quite rough seas. During dining the plates and glasses were almost and actually sliding off the dining tables. Of course it isn’t the cruise lines fault. It is weather !!!
Right. Barge ship captain on the Mississippi is equal to a cruise ship captain that sails on the seas and oceans🙄 pretty sure the RC captain knows what they’re doing.
We missed our only port on one of our cruises here in Australia as the swells were expected to be over 2 metres and the captain said he legally could not tender us across with any waves over 2 meters so we ended up with a 4 might cruise Just at sea
If you think 10 or 20 foot waves is a lot, don’t even think about taking a cruise to the Hawaiian islands. When you sail from the big island of Hawaii to Maui, they say that the ocean between the two islands is the roughest on the planet. My wife and I have and it was one of the worst nights of my cruising experience ever.
By now people should know to expect bad weather....DURING HURRICANE SEASON!!! winter time is not the time to complain about bad weather. YOU CARNIES ARE HILARIOUS!! I'm a tugboat captain...ILL STEER THE SHIP!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
I understand that weather is a factor. But the captains should be avoiding it as much as possible. Cruised in 2023 hurricane forced us to the Bahamas. Then they sailed us right back into it abd we didn't even sail to our desired destination. We had rough seas and terrible weather. Wd were offered nothing but, I haven't sailed since.
It's none of his business what the issue was as it was resolved. If the Captain or Carnival wants to share that ups to them. We have been delayed due to unannounced issues. We waited to the issue was resolved and that was it.
Some people don't need to cruise. I was caught in the tail of two hurricanes and I didn't ask for a refund and still had fun and took many after that. weather is a big part of it. You're on a ship in the middle of the ocean for god sake. Ship happens.
I cannot understand why cruise lines would even operate during hurricane season or why people would want to go on ships in that season. Greed on the part of cruise lines their bosses are not out there during hurricane season and as for passengers plain stupidity.
@@dlgregory35 There were no signs or reports of the hurricane until we got out to sea and it was to late. it wasn't that bad. Carnival had everything very well under control. I go during that winter because of all the craziness during the summer and watch who your calling stupid. There are other good reason to cruise during the winter. You cruise when you want and we will cruise when we want.
If a barge ship captain himself offered his "help", I wonder where did he get his qualification 🤔. I am not a sailor but even I know cruise ship captains have to study and master a lot more than barge ship captains. When a passager though he is as good, somebody should check his head.

Im sure the cruise line would LOVE to control the weather, that’s not reality.
You leave you kiss your money Ba Bye..carnival will tell you what part didn't you get...the Ba or the Bye. No refund for you!
We cruise about 6X a year, and in 19 years, we've missed zereo ports. Guess we're just lucky.

I like cruising any time, but around February to March I’m sick of the cold weather and want to go somewhere warm. This year I’m headed to Hawaii.
Yes I had stops cancel no problem we still had a good time at other ports
Missed many ports and have also had cruises extended to keep people safe
I missed a stop at a private island because the folks that work on the island couldn't safely make it to work that day due to rough seas.
People believe a host of nonsense...because they want to

I have the most interesting dreams during the rocking of the cruise ship.
