  • We've used the Good and the Beautiful for math since we started homeschooling. However, we're switching to a different math curriculum company. Here's why.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I really appreciate that you noted you aren't bashing TGTB but still being honest.
    I just wanted to post this comment in case other mamas come on here to hear why you stopped using it. My daughter is in 6th grade. She has always loved math from Masterbooks up until Principles of Mathematics, during which she completely shut down. I've found this past year that she is so much more of a visual learner, and I finally broke down and got her TGTB math level 5. She told me today, "Mom, I love this math!". She did 20 problems in 5 minutes that would've taken her hours previously. I feel like it's reviving her love of math. We may switch when we get to high school, but I think for visual learners who get overwhelmed by problems on the page, this curriculum is fantastic!
    I'm so glad you found something that will work for your kiddos. That's what I absolutely love about homeschooling! We can be flexible with curriculum and cater to our kids individual needs.

    I like using Math Lessons for a Living Education. There's a story at the beginning,but it can be skipped. The amount of problems on a page are generally up to 8.
    The color in the main book is only on the story and review page at the end of the week.
    There's also a supplement book called Practice Makes Perfect. Now that is just problems and in full color on every page.
    My son has ADHD and this works for him because it's a gentle approach.

    We also switched to Singapore, but the primary 2022. Just started a few weeks ago. My daughter completed Masterbooks math level 1 and a variety of supplement books and she still wanted more. So we started back over at level 1 with Singapore. A lot of it has been review, but we go through all the exercises so she gets that full understanding and knows there is a variety or strategies to solve a particular problem. So she has still been learning new concepts even though she was able to solve it knowing one way. We have been really enjoying it.

    Thank you for doing this video! We switched from Masterbooks to TGATB Math last year and part of this year using the old version. We are halfway through level 4 and a couple weeks into level 3 of Simply Good and Beautiful Math and I’m experiencing the same thing! I do not believe they are teaching the concepts deeply enough. I’m researching right now Singapore Math too and I’d love to know how it’s going for your kids now that they’ve been doing it awhile.

    • @smithpartyof6
      @smithpartyof6  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Singapore is much different than TGATB. It’s not spiraled, so each concept is thoroughly fleshed out before moving on. They often focus on something concrete first before moving on to showing it in a picture, then working out similar problems. But it’s not story-based at all. Sometimes with TGATB it felt like the math could get a little lost in the story, there wasn’t much practice, and the next day it was on to a new concept. Like you mentioned, it just wasn’t deep enough. So Singapore has been working much better for my kids so far.
      How it’s set up took a couple weeks for me to get used to as the teacher. If you decide to go with it, just read all of the teacher information given to you, and you should be good. Also, the manipulatives are bought separately. We have enough things to use around here, so I didn’t buy any. What we already have has been working well so far.

    Hi! I used easy peasy math this year and we liked it. I just didn’t feel like there was enough lesson teaching. So I decided to try TGATB Math 3 next year mainly for the lesson portion, then use the extra 1 worksheet a day from easy peasy to supplement. I felt like Easy Peasy lacked in the lesson portion, yet really liked their worksheets! And vice versa with TGATB 😀

We’ve already switched from masterbooks in first because that was way too gentle, ok for our first year, but wanted a bit more. Then this year with simply math I was left feeling like things weren’t explained well even though my son was grasping most concepts. Hopefully we both find what we are looking for in these next programs!

    This is a great explanation between the differences in “mastery” method curriculum and “spiral” method curriculum. The “teaching from every angle” you refer to is not something that spiral curriculum does all at once. They go around a few times to do the different angles, so mastery doesn’t happen as soon after it is introduced, it happens in upper elementary school. This is a classical approach to learning and that’s why it changed, it is similar to Saxon math or Abeka.

    My preschool aged daughter was ready for some math and I had never ever used TGATB before for any subject, I looked through and was completely sucked in by the pictures for the Kindergarten level. we're about a quarter of the way through her book. My older son has thrived with Singapore Primary, and I have full intentions of starting my daughter with the 1st grade curriculum when she's ready for it, but for now the exposure to math topics in general has been great for us with TGATB. My older student started out with Saxon and we despised the spiral approach, I have a feeling my daughter and I will feel the same way about spiraling the more advanced she gets. I hope you guys really enjoy Singapore Dimensions and that it winds up being a better fit for you all!

I don't think that gentle always = better. I'm not sure what I will be using next with my rising first grader. He enjoys TGTB but I don't feel like he is really making the kind of progress he could be. Is there a reason you chose dimensions over the other versions of Singapore?

It was a lot different for me as the parent at first, and there are things that are covered by TGATB that aren’t covered as frequently by Singapore (measurements, time, money). We use Math U See. I love it but my husband wanted our children doing more math each day. So we got TGATB as a supplement. We're looking to move away from TGATB. It's a good curriculum for the families who find it a good fit. It seems that it is not for my family. I am homeschooling my 7 year old and my 5 year old. Both are math-minded. My oldest does not do well with spiral. She seems to prefer a mastery concept based curriculum. So, we're going to try Math Mammoth after she finishes Simply Good Math 2. • @smithpartyof6
      @smithpartyof6  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Now after spending some time completely away from any TGATB math products, I’m seeing where it fell very short. I definitely recommend other programs that are more thorough. It truly did not give our children enough focused practice on one concept for them to fully grasp the depths of it before moving on to the next concept in sequence.
      Also, the layout of the new version of their math is very overwhelming. There is so much packed on to each page that it makes it more difficult to focus for some kids (two of mine had a hard time focusing). With Singapore, they’re no longer having that issue.
      So while I was originally comparing our experience with the new version to our experience with the old, I’m now comparing it to a much more solid program. And the difference is even more stark.

    Singapore math is a mastery approach, not spiral, and is considered advanced so I wouldn't think kids are behind due to where they tested in the placement tests. Hopefully their approach will be a better fit for your family. The thing that bothers me about the homeschool version of Singapore math is that they eliminate the concrete materials used in Singapore when they teach this style of math. It's typically taught with first concrete materials, then pictorial, then the abstract. The purchased curriculum skips the concrete and goes to the pictorial. I think this can create a lot of problems for some kids.

      Hmm, I’m not sure if that’s just in certain grades? Our lessons have definitely given us concrete activities to do. Thankfully we already have lots of manipulatives around here that we can use for those activities.

      @@smithpartyof6 I just went and looked to be sure I wasn't crazy - I've looked at the program before and have had numerous friends use it and they never had any manipulatives with it. Everything was pictorial (though I'm not at all familiar with Dimensions). So I went to their site and they do have quite a few manipulatives available and sell classroom sets, but no sets for individual kits. Anyway, I stand corrected! I think maybe some people think it's easy to skip the concrete but it's so important and one reason why Singapore math is so successful!! I wish they had bundled manipulatives with the kits.

      Yes! When I first looked at it I was really hoping they would have the manipulatives bundled too. That’s definitely a downside.

    When it comes to Singapore math they teach differently than any other US math program. The right kind of makes sense that a child might not do well on replacement test. So if a child is coming from Singapore math and happens to go back to traditional school then they maybe be a little confused.
