Hey Wes I got the same results with my "500 watt" turbine. After 4 months the controller failed and I had to buy a new one. Never got 100 watts out of it and after a while the blades started chipping. I scrapped the whole thing last month and crashed it to the ground. Frustrating as hell.

I bought my 1700 watt Missouri Freedom a little over a year ago and was not impressed with the power as i never saw more then 400watts. Then just recently it stopped working all together because their open style PMA allows water to get in and puddle around stator. It corroded it bad and the copper wires were corroded right through. They said it only has a MONTH warranty and I must be by salt water..i live in Michigan lol. Complete waste of money.

I bought 4 PMA rotors in 2016 and 2017 , I watched Jeff's videos over and over again , I did exactly what he said to do , I then built all 4 PMAs using his step by step instructions , I then tested each one for 5 minutes at 1000rpm while making power under load , each one performed great , then I increased the speed to 2600rpm for 10 minutes each , all worked great , I then increased the speed to 3600rpm for 30 minutes each and all 4 worked great ,
I used GM 12si Alternators , I greased the bearings , painted the inside just like Jeff said and 4+ years later each one runs great .
I keep hearing stories about how people got ripped off and it's junk , I would have to lean more towards the product is good , it's the people who don't know exactly what they are doing is the problem ,
They don't balance anything , they just put it together and expect it to work because it's brand new ,
But if you go buy a brand new set of car rims and a brand new set of tires , get them mounted , they still need balanced , any thing that spins needs balanced , it needs maintenance , it needs cleaned and regreased , not just watch it spin days upon days without any issues , anything mechanical can break , the trick is to prevent it from breaking with proper maintenance ,
You get the oil changed in your car don't you ?
      Why ?
Because it makes the engine run longer and better , stop blaming the car for not running and blame yourself for not checking and changing the oil .

I have purchased from MWandS a few times and happy with the items, however, this test was not a comparison, I also found the hight really doesn't make it work better, I had it on a 30ft tower, mover to a 50ft tower then added a 10ft pipe making it 60ft. Not long after I had to put up and antenna for a network system so removed the turbine. To keep it from being damaged I installed it on a roof 12ft high using a 3 ft tripod and 2 ft of pipe. It is working better than ever, maintaining 6 groups 31 deep cycles that I use to run the communications 10 hours a day, that is 5 radios keying at 90watts, and 1 at 50watts approximately 20 mins of key time per hour and 10 hrs rx. This is mwands 400-watt turbine and running 6 years. Damn, I'm long-winded. lol

The orange labeled MPPT "low wind boost" controller has a boost feature. Running through a 3 phase bridge rectifier will give lower voltage. Braking occurs when the battery connection is open or when the battery is at 14.5vdc. In high wind, it will brake when the controller sees 14.5v, regardless of battery level. The torque and brake hp of the 5 blade turbine must be around 2hp in 20mph winds, its a shame the PMA is so under sized. I wonder if low quality, weak magnets could be upgraded

MissouriWindandSolar Thanks for the reply. I’m in the UK, we have a lot smaller gardens than you do on average so a smaller system is more suitable for us but it would need to be more efficient, hence my question. I doubt shipping a full wind turbine system from your location would be cost affective but it may be worth it just for a controller and just attach that to one of the ‘good’ turbines from China that are cheaper because of the government assisted delivery costs.

Wes, great to see such a good and well-reasoned bunch of setups. Can you help me as a beginner with a hookup please? I've taken the plunge and bought two Chinese turbines, one vertical and one horizontal.
I have three-wire wind generators, and common inexpensive potted wind rectifiers/controllers that came with.
All three wires from the generator are the same color: Red. And the three controller wires are all the same color, also. Does it matter which generator wire goes to which controller terminal/wire?, or can the hookup be made in any fashion, and still have the same (identical, is it?), best result?
The face of the controller package has a diagram of a three-bladed wind turbine blade, with the center wire of the three controller wires coming from the second (middle one) of the three generator wires. If the order of the hookup matters at all, how can I determine which generator wire is that center wire? Or, as I speculate, since all the wires and terminals have the same color, does the order of the hookup to the controller (rectifier) simply not matter at all? In any case, how did YOU proceed, and manage to get a good result in the hookup? Please help! Others here may have this question, too. Thanks!, --Joe / Tucson ARIZONA

It would be interesting to see if the cheap wind generator output goes up if you use one of your own MPPT Wind generator controllers rather than the one that is supplied with the cheap wind generators, especially if the supplied one is applying the brakes before it allows the generator to get up a reasonable output such as 200 or 300 Watt

*With solar panels you can generate at least 10 times more green electricity with the same investment & time expenditure!*
Reliable and almost maintenance-free for at least 25 years!
On the other hand, 9 out of 10 small wind turbines stop working after just a few years due to the extremely gusty winds.

Hi Wes, Does the size of the wires coming from the turbine determine the deliverable wattage? I just purchased a 12V 400 watt Chinese vertical wind turbine and the 3 phase wires coming from the turbine look to be about 16 awg. They are smaller than the 14awg controller wires that came with it. You mentioned in the video that it's rare to see 100 watts from yours, just wondering if the wires are to blame. The wires on mine just seem to be very small, but not sure cause I've never owned a wind turbine before. Should I be concerned? Thanks you in advance for your input.

Sadly, the Chinese wind turbine is a mess. We really wanted it to work out because it has a strong price point and we felt like we could get more people using wind. What we ended up finding out is that the side of the box is printed with every wattage they want to sell and when you buy a 400 watt unit, they grab a box, check the box on it that says 400 watts and ship it to you. Next person buys a 300 watt, it's the same unit they just check the 300 watt box. The controller they had on this particular unit would brake way before 400 watts so even if the turbine could produce it, there own hardware was limiting it.

I don't disagree - the point of the video is that you can't get 400w out of the box for $75 (or whatever).

Maybe you could cut the dump resistor in that turbine and then see what it gets up to? For the money it would be worth destroying it to see if it has any effect? 20mph isnt it’s rated speed tho, 22.5m/s is the std I believe so if you could observe it around that wind speed with the dump cut it might show better results… experiment?

If you know what you are looking at, you can find good products from China. I have 2 2kw turbines that are going on 4 years old. Other than replacing slip rings last year after one failed? They have been awesome. They produce a steady 1500 watts each in a light breeze and Ive seen them peak at almost 2400 before the self furling kicks in. Buying something advertised as 2000 watts that weighs less than 20kg and has a blade length of 4 ft? Of course you are getting ripped off. Buying something that weighs 50kg and has a blade diameter of 8ft? You have a real 2kw turbine.

Why is the battery voltage (V on 'your' meter, which is actually a very common chinese meter we can buy all over the place) running down around 9 or 10 V while it's producing power? I should think that with a 12V system which I assume is what you're charging here, it should be upwards of 13 or 14. If for some reason the voltage is held down like that I expect the machine would be running in stall and could never run properly. I'm not a 'fan' of all the roof mounts. Seems the chinese turbine you got and lots of others are knock-offs of the old Air series from SW wind power. I always thought those were over rated too, although tehy did produce rated output around 28mph. The chinese one may do the same, even so though ~ that's an awful high speed to rate a turbine at. Plenty of other comments I could make but I'll leave it at that ;)

I'll take that for a win.. 5 blade cheapy Amazon. It is Cheap and it's still Producing some POWER.. Who cares if doesn't reach over 100 watts.. I have the coleman solar panels and they never reach the 100 watts they are rated for. I just chalk it up to parasitic loss through the system and wires.. I've had my'n up for 5 years and it's all working as it should. Wind mill at night keeps the batteries topped up and I never see below 12.8 volts off the batteries unless there is No wind and NO solar... So it's doing it's job to me. Still got 2 grand into the cheap off grid system though. So not that cheap. Would I run a house off it no. Would I run a camp Fridge, tv, Computer, Phones lights. You bet.

Great video Chinese is always a compromise like the 18650 ultra fire 9000 miliamp which just about produce 1 amp every thing chinese is well over rated electric bikes cars all lies cheap cons just to get your money and people fall for it every time if your stupid just buy it but honestly you cant beat good quality items the thing is they actualy work out cheeper making there rated power and lasting a long time. We shouldn't be pushing for cheeper cheeper you ruine the industry and end up with crap then for company's to compete its hwo can sell the cheepest crap 👍
