  • In this video, Andrew, a tour guide with Free Tours by Foot, shows you how to ride the New Orleans streetcars, with tips on choosing the right ticket, where to board, seeing the best sights, and much more. This video is a part of our New Orleans travel tips playlist • New Orleans Travel Tips .
    A good portion of the video focuses on the St. Charles streetcar line as this is the most popular route in the city (It's the one that takes you to the Garden District). However, Andrew explains where the other routes go and what most visitors visit when using them.
    You will also learn your options for paying for your rides, including the Regional Transit Authority's app as well as the Jazzy Pass options.
    Andrew also goes over tips on finding stops, how to board, how to call for a stop as well as when to go if you'd like to get your own seat. Included in this video are tips on using the public bus system in the city.

      Thank you so so much, I'll definitely save these websites. I wanted to visit in August but I know it'd be way too hot down there around this time so I chose San Francisco instead. When it's a lot cooler in NY I'll definitely come visit- that way it wouldn't be as hot like in August.

    Thanks Andrew! My dad was from New Orleans and his father was a streetcar motorman for years on St. Charles and then Canal (pre-64). He was a striker in '29. My Grandparents lived on Iberville near the car barn, as a 9 year old kid it was nothing for me to get on the streetcar at Canal and White, head downtown and transfer to the St. Charles line to go see my aunts, uncles and cousins living near Dublin and Oak. All for $0.07 each way. My favorite ride was on December 29th, 1963 - The NFL Championship Game; I rode the same streetcar from the cemeteries to the river all day for free because I had one of those little transistor radios to play the game. I had to stand up next to the motorman so he could hear the game. Guess it didn't hurt that they all knew I was Earl's grand-kid. Lord I miss those days . . . Hell, I miss the city.

      Hey, thank you for sharing - awesome to hear from someone who knew one of the strikers! I raise a poboy to him. Back then it was a transistor radio held up next to the driver, today a cell phone livestreaming something or other . . . plus ca change!

    Just a request to visitors - Although most locals don't rely on the streetcars as a regular way to get to work, a few occasionally do, so if you see someone who is obviously a local (like they are wearing a restaurant uniform), please let them board before you to ensure that they get a seat & can get where they are going. It's good karma to do so. And you might run into them later & they will remember your kindness.

    This ia solid support to understanding and using our transportation system. It also will make clear why so many people drowned in 2005 with Katrina. A great number of New Orleanians do not own a car--nor do they need one. It was impossile to go out on the I-10 tto the east, as rhat was where the huricane was oming toward us. It was impossinble to leave to the west as the swamp had flooded the highways. The Causeway to the I-12 was stalled. 1,500 people drowned.
    I rode the St. Charles UPtown to school every day when I was young, from the Ponalba over to Royal and then via th UPtown line. What is great fun is listening to the conductors name the streets. Forget a proper French accent. It's AWe - juibun (Irish Channel accent) Ess pla -ade, DEW-main, Chop-it-ooh-las, and so on. There are as many acents as there are recipes for jambalaya.
    When I lived there, in the Pontalba, we heard the jangle of the bells at St, Louey Cathedral to start the day--and depending on the diretion of the breeze we smelled either the coffee roasting, or the beer from JAX brewery, The brewery is now the shops at Canal Place.
    The best time to go is for St. Patrick's Day.
    If you go, stay at the Monteleone. If it's still there, go to Tujacques for dinner,as well as Galatoire's. L'aissez les bons temps roulez!

    Really neat info. I took my wife a couple years ago for her first visit. I didn’t realize the green/red distinction nor the historical aspect of the line. We used this line quite a bit as we were staying at Maison St Charles and I refused to drive in the Quarter. I was in New Orleans two weeks ago (July 2021) and used the street cars a lot. However, be careful about relying on the RTA website for current routes and arrival time of the street cars. The complete St Charles line does not always show up in the on-line map. Also, currently, the street cars do not go all the way to the river on Canal street, you have to transfer to a bus. The maps showed a street car going down Loyola street down to the Greyhound station, but that route no longer is in service. Haha, I waited a long time at UPT1 for a car that never arrived. Wait times can be unpredictable. One day I waited 45 minutes on the St. Charles line, got off for lunch at 5 Guys, and waited another 40 minutes for the next car. I was sometimes very frustrated with the waits and the mis-information on the website.

    So Andrew, there is a huge difference between a streetcar and a cable car. Streetcars employ electric motors mounted on their trucks (wheelsets with frames) and do not take their power from a trolley cable, but a trolley wire. (They do share steel wheels and steel rails though)
    A cable car is propelled by a heavy steel wrapped cable continually running (approximately 8 miles per hour) under a slot in the road which is clamped onto by a 'grip' which hangs under the car into the slot. At present San Francisco is the only place in the world where this technology is employed.
    Lotsa places have streetcars, with arguably New Orleans, being about the most historic and interesting trams, to use the European noun.

  • @luislaplume8261
    @luislaplume8261 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Cable cars in San Francisco are pulled by a cable cord under the street and they are electric by use of batteries underneath the cable car for headlights and headlights.

    • @FreeToursbyFootHQ
      @FreeToursbyFootHQ  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct. Though, many people mistakenly refer to the streetcars in New Orleans as cable cars and that's why Andrew was referencing them that way.

    To clarify a point, trolleys and cable cars are different animals. The trolley is electric and powered by the overhead wire just like an electric train as you said. A cable car is mechanically driven by a moving cable under the street. The driver has a mechanism that grips the moving cable so as to pull the car along. That's why San Francisco's cable cars can go up a steep grade which a trolly could never climb. I love this series, keep p the good work!

      Because for many years you boarded at the rear, paid the conductor, took a seat and exited from at the front. For some old habits are hard to break. Or, as we have learned in building fires, 80% of people will try to exit a burning building where they entered even if another exit is closer to them.
