    I’ve been struggling to understand how to use compression properly for years and just gave up on using it. There’s plenty of videos out there but nothing explains the fundamentals like your break down. Thanks mate really appreciated. 👍😁

    Super step-by-step explanation and great choice of tones and colours. Good to see and understand the presence of stack-options which are more obvious on more expensive Pedals. Finally I‘ll need to check out the maybe hidden option of blending the direct signal and the compressed with the parallel switch activated. I use the tapesaturation of a Strymon-Deco as „snake-oil“😅. As in your demo i hear and feel it. But for sure an 1176 just jumped on my whishlist… THANKS again for this and many more insightful videos! PS: from the manual „On - Parallel mode; your unity dry signal is heard, and the output knob controls the level of the compressed signal. Use parallel compression when you want a more natural compressed sound.“

    Great demo Corey!! Easily one of the best explanations of a compressor out there. I totally get you on the feel thing. I never gig without a compressor. Absolutely love it on a clean sound and they are so much more versatile than they get credit for. I've had the Origin Effects Cali76 on my board for years now. Brilliant compressor! From my experience, people who don't like them generally don't understand them well enough to get the most out of them. And I suppose they're not as fun as a drive or flanger since they're pretty subtle. Great stuff here 🤘

    I did not use a compressor on my guitar rig for decades. Then I got the Wampler Ego compressor about a decade ago. I use it thusly: via the Blend control, I preserve the entirety of the pick attack. So I have complete dynamic control. Then the compressed part of the signal comes in as the pick attack dies, and the note sustains just a bit longer than it does without compression. All without changing the tone at all.

    Great video and detailed breakdown of compression! And you’re a monster player as well, really enjoyed it. I’ve had a Diamond compressor for nearly 20 years that has been one of the first pedals in my signal chain and nearly always on, no matter what followed it. Very versatile pedal, but on subtle settings it just makes everything that tad bit sweeter.

    One thing l maded an error on my 1176 pedal;
    I was my using it after a noise suppressor with a buffer that made the compressor early to activate compression and difficult to get natural tone on.
    With your video, l notice you use yours before the amp pdeal that made me realize to put my pedal before the noise suppressor.
    Couldnt stop playing in the signal mode since it felt so good!!

    So, input is squashing the low end/output fattens out the high end. Attack/release makes the notes really picky/spikey. Slow attack = wet rain drops. Slow release = sustained chime. Ratio = how much squashing there is. (I probably got that all wrong but your vid was priceless excellent informative educational concise)

    I am jazz/fusion eclectic type guitarist. I use to be against compression. Recording our sessions am having a lot of issues with distortion. I thought maybe I need to get a compressor limiter. Not knowing much about them and prices can be so high. I just recently found out about the 1176 and that there is a really good copy version for a fraction of the price, then saw this pedal. Even better. I think you show some of the versatility of the pedal. Without the pedal on you sound is really good but with it on it is definitely better. Punchier, rounder more pleasant to the ear. I am definitely sold on getting one or more! I am not a person who can hear extreme details, I have good a ear though. I think it is fair to say even just running the pedal without settings on gives a nice tube sound? It is a warm rounded tone, I can hear it even if it is subtle so no you are not selling snake oil. Yah should mention I am listening through my Dt 770 pro headphones so I can hear the details much better than my cheap speakers.

    As an audio engineer, compressors are second nature to me, and they’re really powerful tools when you know how to use them. You can use them for punch, tone, evening out the dynamics of a performance.. so many cool things. I’m glad you articulated this very well. Curious if you’ve had a chance to try the Horizon clarity compressor? I know it’s marketed as a heavy music compressor, but it’s amazingly transparent for clean stuff too - when you want the even performance and dynamics - without the “squish”

    Hi Corey. I happened across this video because I saw you using the UA 1176 that I recently acquired. I'm a bass player and just through experimentation, have found some useful settings. Thanks in particular, for the 'always on' settings you refer to. I'm sure I'll play with the settings as I get to know the '76 but for the moment, I just need a couple of 'always on' settings that suits the gig. Much of my work is performing cover songs so I get to play various genres. If there's any recommendations for us 'low-enders' with this particular pedal, that would be great.

    I bought the 4-knob TC Electronics Hyper-Gravity compressor because it was very affordable on Reverb. Later I saw on YT "Pete & Tore - Everything You Need to Know About Compression". Tore M. (apologies I don't know how to spell his last name), with TC Electronics at the time, explains that the HyperGravity is a 3 band compressors. Essentially, it has 3 compressors running for low, mid, and high frequencies. Pete Thorn and Tore built Pete's Tone Enhancer Tone Print with very soft "knees" between each band so it's very transparent. For me, I've got the HyperGravity on all of the time. Don't get the small 3 knob HyperGravity. You want the 4 knob model which has the Blend knob.

    This is a very educational video. I like the way you explain things ie the different knobs. I always use the compressor on my floorboard and have tried many different settings to be more informed on how the different knobs works. I have one issue though. The way I am playing without a regular pick, only a thumb pic makes spikes in recording. So let me try to explain, I often use downstrokes with a fingernail, when playing single notes on single strings. I would like to get rid of the spikes that I afterwards have to edit in the wave file. I Imagine I should use a fast attack but I have not found a solution that serves this purpose. It would be nice if you understand my dilemma and you could help me how to dial the knobs.

When would you go direct these days... and not mic up a clean amp and why? And most important... how do you process the guitar signal past our interface to get those sounds, since the DI sound is often very thin? Thanks!

This is never discussed in compression videos or manuals that I’ve come across and the ramifications for one over the other, when deciding release time, are great imo. This is essentially the sustain function right? So what exactly are we sustaining?

    Since I use a Fender style (Dr. Z JAZ) amp, I’ll sometimes have the compressor set to turn on when any overdrive loops are off and I’m playing a Strat. It kind of peps up super clean Strat sounds. I personally find that if it’s subtle it’s a nice touch but if it’s a strong compression effect I hate it. Definitely not a key component of my pedal board. Great for mixing and mastering though.

    • @larrysteinke1839
      @larrysteinke1839 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yes, it comes from synthesizer terminology where "attack" is the speed at which the sound reaches max volume, but in a compressor it's the speed at which the compressor comes into play and reduces the volume, so yeah, the opposite to what it suggests

    One thing I find a bit frustrating is that there is no standard for which direction the attack and release controls work on different compressors. My old analog DOD just has a release control and it works the opposite direction to the one on this UAFX. And I have a number of different compressors in a digital multi effects unit, and the attack is faster on some of them when turned clockwise, but faster when turned counterclockwise on others. Whenever I go to use one of the digital models, I literally have to first crank the compression way up, and try the attack and release controls hard left and then hard right to hear which way they operate on that particular model. Another thing I wish was standard on compressors was a side chain low pass filter. By the nature of how sound waves work, bass frequencies have more energy and will activate a compressor before treble frequencies will, so often times the attack of your bass notes will be getting buried while the treble will be still poking right out. Most of the time, I would like to have the opposite happening: treble attack tamed, but bass attack left in tact. It seems only a few of the more expensive compressors include that feature though.

    Where in the signal chain would I put this pedal? And how does this pedal compare to other Compressor pedals?

    I have an Effectrode PC 2a Compressor...it ..is a photo-optical Tube Compressor.....based on a Sylvania 6111N.O.S. subminiature twin triode pencil tube.

    Is this compressor place between guitar and amp, or in the EFX loop on back of amplifier ?

      Guitar-Comp-(other pedals if used) - Amp

    It's insane how much better the UA Dream is in comparison to Helix, which I own.

    So, I need to swap the compressor on my current board! It’s a Dynacomp, and I think I’ll now use my Cali 76 instead 😎

    Is there a huge difference using it in the effects loop vs. the front of the amp? I know there are no effects loops on the UA pedals, just curious as I have heard mixed reviews on that setup. Some people really like a compressor in the loop for their Mesa Marks and other amps.

    One of the things I don't like about guitar pedal compressors is that they tend to squash my transients, dulling the tone. I like the fact that this compressor has traditional attack, release and ratio controls.

    Great.
    Now do one on rock guitar tones, and with a classic Boss compression pedal.

    I have a hard time using compression, mostly on amp sims or multi-effect/amp modelers.

    For me, the confusion with compressors is so many have wildly varying controls. Some just single knob, others up to 6 or more parameters to control

    I play mostly single coil and always use compression,,,,simple 2-knob MXR (3 Oclock/9Oclock)...really brings out the tone nicely. Otherwise, sounds dull...and I play thru a ToneKing or a Hamstead. Great vid.
    Is that a stock S7?

    Corey! Best explanation yet. You’re well organized, clearly and plainly spoken. I had my “version” of understanding. Now I’ve got a much better one. Thank you for your help. BTW - Nice, Very Nice, Chops!
    …edit 10/22/2024:
    Hey, it’s me again, Justin. I have been using the Origin Cali76 Stacked Edition. I’ve realized that Origin doesn’t list any info on the Ratio setting, (internal settings?) for this pedal. Do you have any idea how I can contact them about this. I go way back to the old DBX Compressors for my work as a Live Sound Engineer. I feel like I’m lost without at least knowing what the Ratio setting is! Thanks again for the great work that you do!
