i've got a z1 and i've brought out to the field and dropped it on concrete, in pools of water, grass, dirt, pavement, wood, and many other surfaces, and it has not cracked or spoilt yet. my best bud who has a s5 already smashed up his screen about 3 times and has had water damage. if you want a rock solid phone, the build quality of the sony is definately a winner. btw i'm trying to accidently 'spoil' my z1 so that i can change to the z3. its been 4 weeks unsucessful.... apparently the metal band is too damn strong!
Also, the Z1 isn't running the final camera firmware. According to reports, the Bionz software wasn't finished in time for release and the phone is currently running a stopgap build. On release, the Bionz software will take care of that noise. It's already king cameraphone for Android and, because the hardware is so advanced, it has the capability to get much better.
they're usually talking about how grainy a picture is or the compression artifact that it has. It's usually very noticeable on cell phone cameras indoors or in dark places.
The sound quality while recording is a lot better on the S4 it seems for this video, although the image was more stable on the Z1. Personally I like plastic, for reason of handling shock since i'm always knocking and dropping phones at work. Nice review!

I used different brands of android phones, materials used for phones are very important to feel the sleekness you carry with you everyday. Faster processor is very important. Natural colors in picture makes the real memories. Better keyboard is also important. And all these are found in xperia z1. :-)

It actually is a TFT Triluminos Display. The trilominus is the actuall techonology while the TFT stands for the type of screen it is, like for exaple it could wether be a: LED, Super Amoled, etc. ;)
For the love of god .... u may didn't notice but u r 100% biased to the samsung galaxy s4 ... I think the Z1 is a monster better phone except for the sound but I usually use the ears buds and they are very cool , other than that the phone is great and the update fixed the camera issue and I don't see any viewing angle problems and the phone is absolutely one of the best smartphones on the market if u r going to buy don't hesitate and go for it
As a Z1 owner, I can't recommend the camera strongly enough. The pixel oversampling means pin sharp daylight images with no noise at 8mp. The focal depth is far superior too, leading to stunning Bokeh effects on macro shots. Colour and white balance trump the S4, too. Sure, if you put a 13mp image from a S4 against a 8mp image from a Z1, the S4 will seem more detailed. Downsize the S4 image to match and you'll see that the Z1s native shots are superior.
Exactly the bezels are are useful they are there for reasons. When I didn't understand why phones had bezels,I hate it the phone but when I started looking up why phones had bezels it made perfect sense.

The waterproof feature doesn't do any harm to the actual phone, so why would you remove that? A better display would be good, less sharp edges. Me personally, I think the note 3 is the best (I own an S4)
if you looking for best camera + video, premium design, water proof, and playstation certified (can play game with dualshock 3) wireles, you should chose Xperia Z1 but if you looking for a lot of cool features you can chose Galaxy S4 or Galaxy Note 3

I used both phones and here is honest review. Z1 OVER S4: CAMERA (just by a little) , SPEED, DESIGN, Waterproff S4 OVER Z1: Front Camera, Loudspeaker, Mic recording, Display, lighter and tinner (more compact) Comparing this two phones is really hard. I can't say that Z1 is better, and i can't say that S4 is better. It's just what you want from a phone. If you are into photography, love going onto social networks all day and needing that extra speed without lags than go for Z1. If you love shooting videos, listening to music on loudspeaker, have better screen (watching movies ETC) than go for S4.
there is a very important thing you did not mention about it and that is the stability of os on both of them under heavy work . From my experience on SGS2&3 i see samsung devices has a fully feature ( more than you need ) which makes your mobile ram very few then more lag, slow response and no stable. But in my htc one ( one of greatest experience ever for android ) you see there is almost no future in its os but very stable and has fast response and most of rams are free and ready to use .
yep i notice that and the Z1 doing great on bokeh effect background (like low F-stop in DSLR) on close up shooting, take a look at 06:48 flower still image.
Z1 was way better at shooting videos, but I'm still waiting for the Nexus 5, tho. Expendable storage and FullHD graphics is a need. Also 4K videos would be cool... And maybe 60FPS 1080p videos.
Really like my Z1. It's quite heavy though and it has a factory fitted screen protector which can get scratched and has the Sony logo attached to it. Would have preferred simple gorilla glass with the logo underneath. Oh well. Still a great phone.
Wouldn't the Snap 800 also improve battery power management? Or is the Octa even more then that? Cause from what I saw I ended up wanting the 800, but that could be me misreading by all means. I'm still caught between the two. Reviews for the camera on the Z1 is all over the place, either its software versions, prototype versions or some serious manufacturing problems (seeing as "non-reviewers" also encounter problems w/ screen and camera) and that has me worried :\ Note 3 though, gah!! :D
I don't understand whats wrong with the bezels. From my experience, I find them useful for holding on the screen. Those no bezel phones, your fingers tend to cover the screen. I don't really see bezels as a bad thing at all.
watching the vid in full hd can tell a lot and no i am not a sony fanboy. i use a SGS3 myself. and when i really wanna shot images i have my mirrorless camera with me. just to my calibrated monitor and watching this vid in full HD i say the images on the Z1 looks more true to life. you sir, calling out other people as fanboy, you must be a samsung fanboy yourself
As an S4 owner I can tell you that's not true. If you knew how to use the phone, they would work well. But your statement is typical of someone who doesn't actually own the S4. S4 has so many haters...lol. Now I know the phone is awesome. ;-)
For those of you using the argument "S4 is poorly built", you can actually replace the polycarbonate back with a metal back if that is what you prefer. And the fact that the standard S4 battery has less capacity than the Xperia Z1 battery capacity can't be used as an argument simply because you can replace this with a third party battery with more capacity. And in addition to that, Xperias screen takes up too little space. This looks very ugly, especially at the bottom.
In the app load times comparison I immediately noticed how washed out the Z1's colors were, especially in the action bar for apps like Facebook and Twitter.
They always use the auto shooting mode on the Z1, which for some reason Sony limits at 8 MP, so if u want much better pictures, just use the manual mode for max MP :) Getting it too, next month though, no cash at the moment XD
S4 is a good phone, but I find most of the features more like bloatwares. Cool features, but practically they're not working and you end up turning them off since they prove to be annoying many times. Z1 - water resistant keep you phone protected from water (rains, water accidents, shower, cleaning the phone when dirty). Remember that Z1 comes also with ClearAudio+, Stamina Mode, Small Apps, Camera (Auto mode sucks, use manual), Fluid UI, Sleek Design. I think Sony has more for everyday use :)
I had higher hopes in the Z1. Was really looking forward to replacing my HTC One with the Z1 but the screen is still suffering, the camera introduces noise to photos and the bezel are pretty large. I really liked the Z but wanted the Snapdragon 800. I was sure that the Honami was going to improve on the Z in every which way. Oh well
i think the octa is even more power efficient because it has less power but yeah the 800 is still an awesome cpu. the z1 camera seems like sony has just caught up to samsung's pre-existing camera although it does have better low light photos. but i think the note 3 can take video is 4k which is pretty awesome and makes sure it wont age horribly. also samsung has amoled screens which are more power effcient than lcds and it seems to be alot better than sony's tft screen
The Xperia Z1 is a better phone spec wise and design wise. But when it comes to features Sony lacks it. The camera is better on the Zperia Z1 but the microphone is better on the Samsung S4. But the S4 is really fun but if I had the money I would buy the Z1. Thanks to the S4 Sony created the Z1 so yeah.
The xperia z1 has a snapdragon 800 (2.2 Ghz) and adreno 330 vs the snapdragon 600 (1.9 Ghz) and adreno 320. Both latest versions. Also with the less features and less bloated software on day to day usage I think the Z1 will show a much better performance difference.
They clearly said when they were reviewing original Xperia Z that "it's a Sony phone" so... Sure, Xperia Z1 isn't perfect, but they tend to bash every Sony phone and sound like those imperfections are huge, but with Samsung devices they don't even tell you about those.

While you were recording a video in the Z1, you probably covered the microphone. It's audio quality is one of the best out there.

If the xperia z1 removed the waterproof feature, shrunk the bezels, added better mic and better speakers would've been the perfect phone.

Sony have stated that the Camera software for the Z1 is not yet finalised. The update is supposed to be coming in the next few weeks.

First firmware update has been released for the Z1. I'm guessing that's the firmware that fixes the noise on every right side of the image.

The Z1 is awesome, though I just upgraded to a z3... The z1 has a tremendous camera, and it also has incredible everything!!!
if u notice carefully the video the Z1 takes less time to focus on the flower than the S4

Z1 is not only glass and metal on the exterior, most notably the lens cover is plastic and dents or scratches easily!

I like the Xperia Z for it's Tft screen compared to the S4. I bet the screen looks even sharper with the Z1's new tech not listed in the vid.
