Rife For Cancellation | Matt Rife | EP 401

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 20 พ.ค. 2024
- Dr. Jordan B. Peterson sits down in-person with recently “canceled” comedian Matt Rife. They discuss the incident in question, his viral response, the prominence of crowd work in his act, his early career start at the age of 15, the innovative use of social media to build his name, and the real reason he remains unapologetic for having a sense of humor.
Matthew Steven Rife was born in 1995 and is an American stand up comedian and actor. He started early, entering a school talent show at the age of 14 after being encouraged by a friend. Finding this to be a success, he went professional the next year at age 15. Using TikTok, he managed to consistently go viral with his stand up and "red flag" crowd work. He then entered the arena full time, using social media to grow his name before producing three straight-to-TH-cam comedy specials from 2021 to 2023. This year, he debuted his first Netflix special, "Natural Selection."
This episode was filmed on November 22, 2023

The professor and the jokester
Well, comics are generally pretty smart and think about all kinds of things, and because humor can often be offensive, because you're making fun of something, often normal human behaviour or odd things or society in general, and live in that, you tend to think more or differently about some things. They both think a lot about people, emotions, humanity, life, etc.
And people not understanding what he says is a joke are just, well, morons. He touches a bit on it when he's talking about timing too, there are places and times you can say horrible things and they're just funny, but often you have to be quick with it, if you take 30 seconds to think of something and then say it instead of within a second, it'll come over waaaaay different. But still, he's doing a show, it's a joke. As soon as you think something is too bad or ridiculous to be true, it probably is, apparently some people are missing that insight.
As a victim of DV, I was not offended by the joke. I admit it, I laughed. People need to grow the fuck up and get over themselves. Keep rocking Matt!!
I would bet money that those of us who have been through it laugh harder than anyone else....
We need more Matt's in this world. Proud you didn't back down.

I love Matt Rife. I'm so tired of the walk-on-eggshells, thin-skinned, passive-aggressive, goal-post-moving world that's evolved over the past decade.
Well said!

Matt, we LOVE YOU! You are by far one of the quickest witted comedians ever. The fact that you ad lib & engage the audience is what makes you so unique & beyond talented. I'll admit when I first saw you, I didn't get your humor yet, not finding it funny. After listening to a few of your stand ups, I literally laugh my phukin ass off!!! Listened to a few last night & my lungs hurt after! Your humor is risky, edgy but so clearly, obviously IT'S ALL ABOUT COMEDY. Comedians joke about all types of peoples, races, disability, gender etc BUT you do it in a way that's still tactful, respectful in beginning and end of your interaction. Love what you said about "scrolling past" or "not listening" for those that don't appreciate your humor. There's so many offensive things in this world, people need to keep scrolling!
You're absolutely amazing, you are going to go so far beyond where you're at. Love that you show affection to your fans. I'm sooooooooo sad I missed you when you came to MN 2 mos ago😫 Hoping you return soon❤🙏

I love that comedians are just so relaxed in front of Dr. Peterson, they don't feel pressure to match the intellectual atmosphere and just speak to one of the most prominent minds of our generation like a friend, and in turn relaxes Jordan so we can see more whimsical and funny side of him. Hope more comedians come to Jordan's podcast to both heal themselves and help Jordan heal as well.
Not sure heal is what happens , from what is my thought? No matter, they are enjoying the time spent together it seems.

Comedians are unbelievably intelligent. People think it's easy coming up with jokes
Often it´s because most comedians are incredibly cerebral and highly intelligent.
that's pretty much the job of a psychologist. I'm not knocking Peterson, I'm incredibly happy that the internet lets us see very valuable people who'd normally be locked in a room with patients or other specialists.
Kudos for not apologizing. The day comedians can't tell a joke about a particular issue (which, by the way, we all do every damn day), is the day comedians stop trying to make us laugh. What a sad day that would be. Keep doing what you're doing. Real people love you man!
And thank you Dr. Peterson for being real!
Imagine Red Fox, or Don Rickles. 😮
But a joke is meant to have a punch line and be funny u can’t just say sentences that are off putting and call it a joke and when someone says it didn’t land u do the “so nobody can even joke anymore” or “everything is offensive nowadays” and accept the fact that maybe it’s not that good of a material

Every truly great comedian is a psychological philosopher.
In my years as an operational fire fighter late 80's, 90's we used to return after a horrific accident or fire call and make light of the situation. We had no HR specialists, we had no Pastor, we had no Psychologist or other person to open up to and no, we did NOT take it home to our spouses and yes we had male and females on shift (and gay), so we got our anguish and our misery and our hurt and our flaws out in the open by joking and cursing and sharing our immediate feelings. None of it was personal or hateful, it was simply a way to recover and let go. Comedy, humour, as dark is it might have been then it helped many of us through the night and get home better for it WITHOUT taking it out on our spouses.
Matt your comedy reminds me of some of my calls and those nights spent with my colleagues and brothers in the FD.
Keep it up Bro, screw the tin foil heads and the mad cancel-hatters (I said it first :) ) and let the rest of normal folk laugh at your antics and humour drawn from real life and real people. Bravo. I was reminded of a friend that was at the time living with stage 4 pancreatic cancer for about 3 years at this point. A birthday party was being held for him so as a gift I gave him a stuffed pancreas and when he opened it he ran around shouting "I HAVE A NEW PANCREAS!!!". It was hilarious.
Did your friend live?

This is the discourse I never knew I needed. Watching 2 intelligent humans with common sense converse has renewed, however temporarily, my faith in humanity. I have a new respect for Rife. I always had a ton of respect for JP.
It's called Black Humour. Having worked in mental health it's a must to take the edge off the reality. If people can't handle it then don't watch. I love Ricki Gervais but when he says something I can't relate to then I stop watching, but I still love him. It is more about where I am and not so much the comedian. Matt your wit and timing is outstanding and you have made me laugh so much and you are so cute! Thank you ❤.
Two men no one ever thought would meet, much less strike a balance between therapy and humor. It takes complete openness of spirit as well as just plain intelligence and complete self awareness. Great exchange, great conversation. So enlightened and needed. Thank you masters of your own universe, Jordan Peterson & Matt Rife. Thank you gentlemen!

I couldn’t have said this better myself. And as a former teacher…I’ve had a lot of the conversation that you describe 😂
Hahah!! Love this perspective 😂

I love Matt Rife! Dude is the best comedian I’ve ever heard along with Brian Regan😂
Matt you are amazing NEVER CHANGE YOU AND YOUR HEART!!! I love your comedy and I'm disabled and you also help make it bearable and able to get through. PLEASE don't listen to haters, we know they are jealous and not near as gorgeous 🤣😘🤣
My grandfather told me numerous times when I was growing up, "If you don't laugh, you'll cry." Laughter is the best way to deal with tough times and I have lived my life by it!
So true 👍🏾
Agreed, and love that sentiment
I will never forget this comment. ❤
Agreed. I don't find him funny, but I am kind of a comedian snob. If I can anticipate the premise, it kills the funny. He's young, I'll try him again in a few years.
@ellencox8415 I'm not a Matt Rife fan either. But I love that he isn't bowing down to the mobs. Comedy is meant to push boundaries, make you think, and laugh while doing it. I support his stand but I honestly don't watch any of his comedy. The few clips I've seen didn't have me laughing out loud like I want in a comedian... kinda like the Dane Cook of this generation. A good looking guy full of personality telling meh funny stories.
I saw the show. I actually suffered domestic violence and I was NOT OFFENDED! It was a joke, and people need to stop being so literally. I loved your show Matt ❤️
Same.
People that get offended by jokes, need therapy or some mental health help.

Me too!!!! (No hashtag) I make fun of my own beatings, what am I gonna do, spend the rest of my life weeping? I'd rather laugh.

Birds of a feather...
The loony left is always outraged at whatever the media wants them to be. Our societal engineers control the media.
I have a fishing channel. Help me stop roofing for a living and make fishing videos full time
There's something profound about that. Because comedy is like a mirror, showing the reflection that is society. A great avenue through which to be philosophical.
Right!! ❤ But JORDAN IS JUST THE BEST…. Whenever he’s talking 🫶period.

I am close to 60 years old and I have seen greats like Fluffy, Richard Pryor, Sam Kinnison, George Carlin, Steve Harvey, Carrot Top, Wanda Sykes , Eddie Murphy and so many others in tv shows, Netlfix etc.. Matt Rife is in my top 3. Very relatable, respects his audience, has a great time and spends time with the audience afterward for pictures or whatever. Why would you want to cancel such awesome entertainment? Good luck Matt!!
My Gen Z daughter was telling me about this and I thought she was ridiculous for being upset. I didn’t know this comedian at all. Now I know him and love him! Gained you at least one fan! 😊
I was a nurse most of my life. Im disabled now. We who survived nursing, did it with some rauchy humor. Because we worked with ppl who were sick n unhappy. This guy makes me laugh, even when he makes fun of my disability. Thank you Matt!!
A joke is to ridicule the situation, not the person. You are GRANDE.
To start, I’m a Sikh, Indian, and my culture is important to me. Thought the past two years I’ve fallen in love with the comedy Matt Rife tells, it’s quick, witty and genuine, he’s not scripted, he’s a true talent. I hope you get to read this. I saw a comedy skit online that he did where he bounced jokes off a Sikh man making terrorists jokes. It was tough to hear at first cause my people have been attacked being called that before. For a moment I was mad with Rife, but then I remembered it’s a joke, he’s a comedian. While the joke is insensitive it was still just a harmless joke and seeing the fellow Indian man who was in the video happy made me happy. I then mentally set myself as if I wasn’t a Sikh and didn’t know the tension of what terrorism is to the Sikh community then I found the joke decent, not his best work but not hurtful to my being. People need to learn to separate their true selves when experiencing comedy. Sorry for a long comment wanted to share how I almost got offended but took the philosophy of not taking comedy at true value to myself as who I am
You have to know yourself and, I think, be ok with who you are to be able to separate who you are from something someone said, without taking it personally. And lemme say this now before I get ahead of myself, I wholeheartedly agree with you, I think it's one of the main reasons why people these days do get so upset over every little thing, is because they have no real values and they don't really stand for one thing or another- literal fence-sitters. So they don't have the ability to separate themselves, they get personally hurt- like, it's being said only to them. You are obviously intelligent enough to see and do this yourself, but sadly most people aren't.
Great job and great reply!!

I think you touched on something important which is taking a step back from indignation about your identity. Whether your identity is black, white, female, trans, Sikh, etc, especially as it relates to the field of comedy, obsession about your identity is something that will only hinder the experience of going for the "ride" that is listening to someone else's joke.
This is a great response. Comedy is a show. An act. And to be offended is just a selfish and egotistical. Unless he targets you specificly sure you can feel how you want but be a realistic man or woman and be bigger than that. Who care how you feel because if it's making people laugh you're spreading a good feeling to a crowd to be honest I don't like being targeted about anything that would bring up a negative emotion but it's a show it's meant to be controversial or something that you wouldn't take politely from someone on the street because it's not real it's just like TV it goes to extreme sometimes because we all have intrusive thoughts that we wouldn't act on but when someone can actually turn any scenario especially something negative into laughter then he's doing the job that you paid to go see it has to be expected especially in comedy it's great that you understand this laughter is the second most treasured emotion that you can share with others . And to push past any personal issue that might feel offensive to you is worth it as long as it's making people laugh only the truth matters assumptions are made by the comedian in his joke it's never personal it's for everyone. Right on man it's good to see that someone can actually take a joke
Sensitive Comedy?? What kind of a Sikh* joke is that??
Two of some of my most favourite people, TOGETHER!!! Great Show!
When my young brother was dying of cancer he made funniest and darkest jokes about his situation. He was a warrior with a kind heart but also a MF with the strength to laugh at the absurdity of his situation.
Wow love that

Jordan Peterson is such a comedian himself. He really makes me smile. His ability to blend a serious topic and be playful around it is simply remarkable!
He really is. So is Elon. People sleep on both of their comedic timings tbh
He does a really good Jordan Peterson impersonation. He sounds exactly like himself when he talks in this video.
That's true. He does come out with some funny stuff. But he never acknowledges the jokes onstage. I hope Matt gave him some tips on how not to bury the punchline!

@@chrisstubing5859 You're the omnipotent judge ? Cool. Objective judge or subjective i wonder.
This is a rich conversation. His style is the most unique in our time. It is dark comedy delivered in real time through a grill of hard irony and self-deprecation. It takes ingenuity, spontaneity and guts to be part of it because you will never know when the whole set will be about you (and or whoever you show up with). It takes balls. Bravo, Mr. Rife. We thank you Mr. Peterson for your genius strings in making this conversation happen. With lots of regards from a Kenyan in Thailand.
His joke is literary hyperbole (a figure of speech in which the author uses specific words and phrases that EXAGGERATE an idea in order to create an emphasized effect).
Thank you Jordan Peterson for being sanity in an insane world. And thank you Matt Rife for not selling out when most would’ve. The world needs more people like you both 🙏🏼
He specifically is selling out. He alienated his audience and now he has to chase the lncel teenager audience by latching himself onto JP's wagon of pandering to that demo. He'll just go all in on the edge-lord "funny because it's offensive" while not being actually funny style of comedy, and transform his brand into being a victim of cancel culture.
Never apologize to the woke mob. They'll see it as an admission of guilt, and never leave you alone. Good job, Matt.
Or they'll see it as weakness and gnash their teeth salaciously, reveling in the opportunity to tear into someone they perceive as weaker or more vulnerable than themselves.
Woke culture is coward culture.
Should Jordan apologise to the children of Gaza? Before his "Give them hell" statement, he seemed to stand against giving human beings "hell". In 50 years time he'll only be remembered by his statements.
@@SH-iz6igYou're the perfect example/reason for this whole video. Guess who outwitted you?
@@SH-iz6ig No, he shouldn't - because he was referring to the TERRORISTS that put those children in that position in the fucking first place. You have absolutely no idea how the real world works and it's absolutely evident with this singular post. You are taking the sentiment of a comment and wrapping it up in your own ideological bullshit to try and enforce a different meaning than what was intended.
He very VERY clearly wasn't talking about the loss of human children and you being a facetious agenda pushing mouthpiece isn't going to change it.
I am part of the "woke mob", was abused my entire life and I loved the joke and love Matt Rife. Don't throw all us woke people under the bus like that. It's disingenuous and shows your lack of intelligence.
Intent is everything. If you are in a comedian's audience and you can laugh at everyone else's expense and not take it seriously but are then triggered when the joke relates to you, you definitely need help! Never apologise for helping people laugh, that's the first step to getting yourself cancelled by people who are spiteful, jealous and won't take risks to succeed in their own life. Love both these guys.
Matt, we would never ever turn you off because of your humor. With that being said, humor is exactly what it is and if someone does not like/appreciate then leave.
Matt is so real. He's by far besides a talented comedian, just a kind-hearted, intelligent man.
@@mojcam2688Wth what gives you that idea?
I'm a DV survivor, I saw him perform this live in Des Moines, and I laughed. If you can't laugh at your trauma, you can't get past it.
You think that everone was able to get past it when you did, or is it ok to be shit on for being abused at any time no matter what?
Easy for you to say as a survivor, try saying that to people who lost their children, sisters and friends to disgusting men who killed them in the end.

You, you overcame it, it is a win and now you can laugh.
Some are still in it, I doubt they take time to complain about a comedian.
