  • Dr. Jordan B. Peterson sits down in-person with recently “canceled” comedian Matt Rife. They discuss the incident in question, his viral response, the prominence of crowd work in his act, his early career start at the age of 15, the innovative use of social media to build his name, and the real reason he remains unapologetic for having a sense of humor.
    Matthew Steven Rife was born in 1995 and is an American stand up comedian and actor. He started early, entering a school talent show at the age of 14 after being encouraged by a friend. Finding this to be a success, he went professional the next year at age 15. Using TikTok, he managed to consistently go viral with his stand up and "red flag" crowd work. He then entered the arena full time, using social media to grow his name before producing three straight-to-TH-cam comedy specials from 2021 to 2023. This year, he debuted his first Netflix special, "Natural Selection."
    This episode was filmed on November 22, 2023

    i’ve been disabled with chronic illnesses since childhood, and i’ve been in a wheelchair for the past 10 years since i became an amputee, and nothing makes me happier than LAUGHING!!! people walk on eggshells around me all the time, and i watched one of matt’s shows where he joked with a girl in a wheelchair, and he wasn’t demeaning in any way whatsoever which was incredibly endearing. btw, the girl laughed her ass off and thanked him for INCLUDING US!!! i don’t go to a comedy show to get upset and defensive. i’m SO glad that you didn’t apologize for what he said, and i’m even happier than matt isn’t allowing himself to get canceled. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

      Well, comics are generally pretty smart and think about all kinds of things, and because humor can often be offensive, because you're making fun of something, often normal human behaviour or odd things or society in general, and live in that, you tend to think more or differently about some things. They both think a lot about people, emotions, humanity, life, etc.
      And people not understanding what he says is a joke are just, well, morons. He touches a bit on it when he's talking about timing too, there are places and times you can say horrible things and they're just funny, but often you have to be quick with it, if you take 30 seconds to think of something and then say it instead of within a second, it'll come over waaaaay different. But still, he's doing a show, it's a joke. As soon as you think something is too bad or ridiculous to be true, it probably is, apparently some people are missing that insight.

    Amazing how 2 people, without "agendas", can just have a normal adult conversation. I miss this sooo much. I'm getting closer to 60 now. And modern scamming, which I see as fake chatting, just saddens me so much. Most of my jobs involved service and so I've seen and heard too many. Now I drive tractors. Full sized delivery boy. But I don't have to bartend or wait tables and mostly watch and listen to men and women gaslight or play each other for whatever they are after. This conversation is refreshing indeed and helps my optimistic heart stay strong and just plain ole happy. So, Thank You to both of you for just being kind and sensible adults.

    Matt, we LOVE YOU! You are by far one of the quickest witted comedians ever. The fact that you ad lib & engage the audience is what makes you so unique & beyond talented. I'll admit when I first saw you, I didn't get your humor yet, not finding it funny. After listening to a few of your stand ups, I literally laugh my phukin ass off!!! Listened to a few last night & my lungs hurt after! Your humor is risky, edgy but so clearly, obviously IT'S ALL ABOUT COMEDY. Comedians joke about all types of peoples, races, disability, gender etc BUT you do it in a way that's still tactful, respectful in beginning and end of your interaction. Love what you said about "scrolling past" or "not listening" for those that don't appreciate your humor. There's so many offensive things in this world, people need to keep scrolling!
    You're absolutely amazing, you are going to go so far beyond where you're at. Love that you show affection to your fans. I'm sooooooooo sad I missed you when you came to MN 2 mos ago😫 Hoping you return soon❤🙏

    In my years as an operational fire fighter late 80's, 90's we used to return after a horrific accident or fire call and make light of the situation. We had no HR specialists, we had no Pastor, we had no Psychologist or other person to open up to and no, we did NOT take it home to our spouses and yes we had male and females on shift (and gay), so we got our anguish and our misery and our hurt and our flaws out in the open by joking and cursing and sharing our immediate feelings. None of it was personal or hateful, it was simply a way to recover and let go. Comedy, humour, as dark is it might have been then it helped many of us through the night and get home better for it WITHOUT taking it out on our spouses.
    Matt your comedy reminds me of some of my calls and those nights spent with my colleagues and brothers in the FD.
    Keep it up Bro, screw the tin foil heads and the mad cancel-hatters (I said it first :) ) and let the rest of normal folk laugh at your antics and humour drawn from real life and real people. Bravo. Now go spend a few shifts at your local Fire Station at the end of the month after pay-day... when the bars and the roads get busy.

  • @SikhiJedi

    To start, I’m a Sikh, Indian, and my culture is important to me. Thought the past two years I’ve fallen in love with the comedy Matt Rife tells, it’s quick, witty and genuine, he’s not scripted, he’s a true talent. I hope you get to read this. I saw a comedy skit online that he did where he bounced jokes off a Sikh man making terrorists jokes. It was tough to hear at first cause my people have been attacked being called that before. For a moment I was mad with Rife, but then I remembered it’s a joke, he’s a comedian. While the joke is insensitive it was still just a harmless joke and seeing the fellow Indian man who was in the video happy made me happy. I then mentally set myself as if I wasn’t a Sikh and didn’t know the tension of what terrorism is to the Sikh community then I found the joke decent, not his best work but not hurtful to my being. People need to learn to separate their true selves when experiencing comedy. Sorry for a long comment wanted to share how I almost got offended but took the philosophy of not taking comedy at true value to myself as who I am

    • @meghanparris8203
      @meghanparris8203 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +24

      You have to know yourself and, I think, be ok with who you are to be able to separate who you are from something someone said, without taking it personally. And lemme say this now before I get ahead of myself, I wholeheartedly agree with you, I think it's one of the main reasons why people these days do get so upset over every little thing, is because they have no real values and they don't really stand for one thing or another- literal fence-sitters. So they don't have the ability to separate themselves, they get personally hurt- like, it's being said only to them. You are obviously intelligent enough to see and do this yourself, but sadly most people aren't.

      I think you touched on something important which is taking a step back from indignation about your identity. Whether your identity is black, white, female, trans, Sikh, etc, especially as it relates to the field of comedy, obsession about your identity is something that will only hinder the experience of going for the "ride" that is listening to someone else's joke.

    • @mattChisholm-vt3dl
      @mattChisholm-vt3dl 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      This is a great response. Comedy is a show. An act. And to be offended is just a selfish and egotistical. Unless he targets you specificly sure you can feel how you want but be a realistic man or woman and be bigger than that. Who care how you feel because if it's making people laugh you're spreading a good feeling to a crowd to be honest I don't like being targeted about anything that would bring up a negative emotion but it's a show it's meant to be controversial or something that you wouldn't take politely from someone on the street because it's not real it's just like TV it goes to extreme sometimes because we all have intrusive thoughts that we wouldn't act on but when someone can actually turn any scenario especially something negative into laughter then he's doing the job that you paid to go see it has to be expected especially in comedy it's great that you understand this laughter is the second most treasured emotion that you can share with others . And to push past any personal issue that might feel offensive to you is worth it as long as it's making people laugh only the truth matters assumptions are made by the comedian in his joke it's never personal it's for everyone. Right on man it's good to see that someone can actually take a joke

    It’s amazing to see how Jordan speaks to Matt and how much of an amazing conversation this is, I’m 27 and I still am surprised when people put down Jordan Peterson based on his misrepresentation by the media. You are an inspiration to us younger people who have open ears and open hearts

      Peterson is put down (more whining) because of the stupid shit he says. Calling it media representation is idiotic.

      Jordan is a class act. And I feel like you can tell when he likes some one because he becomes more involved speaking in the interview.

    JP has a comedic talent all his own. It's more deadpan and cerebral than Matt's, but they're meeting each other on a common ground for this conversation. I loved this episode.

      Low expectations. Same reason why religious leaders, particularly of the Anglican variety, are such a riot.
      They're so serious all the time, that any crack in the metaphorical mask is magnified.

      Women can make a whole carrier out of bashing men, main stream media can president hitting men as funny
      No one has issues with that
      I’d just really like these people to not be so one sided
      If you are upset when people LIGHTLY make fun of women why don’t you get upset for men to
