    I love that the Windows 98SE Boot Disk basically *is* MS-DOS 7 :)
    once again Phil has come through with another brilliant and priceless video, thanks mate!

      @@philscomputerlab i need a copy of the emm386.exe file but i do not have a computer with win 98 installed. i have done an internet search and did manage to find the file but may be a copy from dos 6.22 because the file is 119kb not 125,495 bytes. will any version of emm386.exe file work? is there anyway you can add the win 98 emm386.exe file in the "links to resources" area below the video? thanks.

    I really like the utilities that come with Dos 6.22, like scandisk, defrag, msd, memmaker, edit, qbasic... I was hoping for a video on how to replace the entire MS-DOS 6.22 with MS-DOS 7.1 and have these features.... but if I copy the MS-DOS 6.22 software over to a 7.1 system I get "Incorrect DOS version." when I try to run them. Is it possible to get the entire 7.1 package with all the utils?

      I'd like to kinow that as well. I wonder if you partitioned for 1GB and the rest for Win98, you could install MSDOS V6.22 in drive C?

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's easy, these utilities are included when you install Windows 98. Most should be in the Windows or one of its sub-folders.

    To do this using MS-DOS 8.0 from the Windows ME Boot Disk, follow these steps:
    1. Do fdisk exactly like in this video.
    2. Format C: /u /v:{Volume Name Here}
    3. Take these three files from the Windows ME OEM CD (You can get one at WinWorldPC):
    1. \Win9x\Tools\NetTools\fac\ltools.dta\io.sys
    2. \Win9x\Tools\NetTools\fac\ltools.dta\command.com
    3. \Win9x\Tools\NetTools\fac\ltools.dta\msdos.sys
    4. Move them all to the C: drive.
    5. Edit msdos.sys to remove the logo and registry, then add all the attributes.
    6. Add all the attributes to io.sys.
    7. Add the EMM386 from the Windows ME Windows Folder.
    8. Base System Installed!
    9. The Boot Menu itself does work, but the Windows ME Boot Disk for some reason can't run emm386 at all. Also, using himem.sys is not necessary, as the MS-DOS 8.0 io.sys includes himem.sys in it.

    • @northwindkey

      While Extended Memory works on 8.0 even better than it did on 7.1, 8.0 should really only be considered as a novelty, as, like with Windows, Seven is the best version.

      Windows Me does not support loading Emm386.exe from the Startup disk(kb 275423). To restore emm386 functions, try replacing it with jemm386 version 5.78 2012-09-22 from freedos 1.2

    Help!!!
    IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS and the BOOTLOG.TXT files are all missing from the boot disc mentioned in the video. I am trying to setup a pure dos system and have created a partition, formated the drive and made a DOS directory and xcopied over all the files, but as I said, the other nessarsary files are missing. Can you help me please?
    Thanks.

    Are there any disadvantages to using DOS 7.1 instead of 6.22, like incompatibilities or just weird quirks? Also, why use a 32GB partition if 120GB is supported? Great video as always!

    • @guycrew728
      @guycrew728 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To answer the latter half of your question, the 32 GB partition was used because he just happened to have a 32GB Compact Flash card in the machine. Also, under what circumstances would you use all 32GB in DOS, never mind 120GB?

    • @nathan386dx40
      @nathan386dx40 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I dunno. I just like the idea of having as much storage as possible and then seeing how much can be used. Edit: Also, thank you for pointing out that detail, I missed it the first time.

    hello, i have an old laptop that has win98 SE installed on C: i would like to keep win98 and create a partition to use MS DOS, can i just create a partition and name it D: for example, and install DOS on it or do i absolutely have to delete the primary win98 on C: ?
    in other words a dual boot computer that has win 98 and MS DOS.
    thanks

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That should not be needed. Windows 98 SE has MS-DOS mode built in. You can try this: www.philscomputerlab.com/ms-dos-mode-tutorials.html
      The two files at the top with instructions.

      thanks for you quick reply, I am trying to program some old Motorola radios that require strictly native MS dos, not sure if launching DOS from a windows environment will work but i will give a try , if it does not work, can i still create a partition to use MS DOS only?

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is DOS from withing Windows, often referred to as DOS session or command prompt. But MS-DOS mode is native DOS. Check my website, follow the instructions and you'll see what I mean.

    • @freecrac
      @freecrac 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      With a partitions manager for windows we can decrease the primary boot partition without to destroy the content, if we defrag the disk before to put the data near together. And than we can move the content to get space for another primary partition and for a second DOS boot manager for to hide and unhide the just not used primary partition and for to select DOS or Windows for booting. So we can separate DOS from Windows, because only one primary partition is visible at boot time. But within Windows we can temporary make the hidden partion visible for to exchange some files.
      But all of the partions manager from windows to linux are crazy and can do ugly things with partition. So the best way is to delete all partition and start again to divide the disk with one or more partion.

  • @MrMateczkoYT
    @MrMateczkoYT 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's important to get the No Ramdrive version.
    The Ramdrive version does not have the Format utility!
    You can also add DisableLog=1 to MSDOS.SYS so that it prevents from creating BOOTLOG.TXT and BOOTLOG.PRV after every boot, which you can delete after putting this line, for an ever sleeker root directory.
    Also, it would be nice to hack the COMMAND.COM (or is it IO.SYS?) to replace the Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu text in the boot menu with a a custom one, as it's distracting!

      Because you do not load DOS drivers in Windows 98! You need to keep it separate for MS-DOS mode. I stopped helping people with their DOS / 98 issues because people always mix it up :)

    Do you always use MS-DOS or have you tried using anything like IBM PC-DOS? I have gone up to PC-DOS 6.1 and it still acts like it is a duplicate of MS-DOS. My understanding is that they shared the same code for many years; almost to the end of the DOS run.

    As far as i know, a i586 should be backwards compatible with a 386...
    That means i only have 640K of memory available, and that is not enough for anything.

    • @RWL2012
      @RWL2012 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      a bit late I know! a Pentium III as a DOS-only PC is totally fine; perhaps on the high end but at least you're not wasting the PC compared to doing it on a Core i7 or something.
      since you actually want to run both MS-DOS 7.1 and Windows 98, you can literally do that by partitioning the hard drive with FDISK and installing DOS on one partition and Windows on the other.
      without actually doing that though, since MS-DOS 7.1 is just the DOS from the Windows 95 OEM Service Releases and Windows 98, you can do the following to set the PC to start in MS-DOS mode and then Windows 98's graphical operating environment is started manually by typing "win", same as Windows 3.1 etc:
      (Boot into Windows 98)
      Click Start, Shutdown, and Shutdown the PC in MS-DOS mode.
      Type cd\ to get to the C:\> prompt.
      Type attrib msdos.sys -r -a -s -h
      Type edit msdos.sys
      Locate the line BOOTGUI=1 and change the line to BOOTGUI=0
      Save the file and reboot the PC.

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes I know exactly the issue. DOS being 16 bit, it can only count up to 65536. So it basically starts counting at 0 when it tries to count to 80 :D
      If you just want a single 80 GB partition, just FDISK it, format it, and you will have 80 GB, despite the tool showing different numbers. This works up to 120 GB, the "real" limit.

    Can multiple dos systems be on one pc?

    • @freecrac
      @freecrac 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is possible to use at maximum four primary IDE partition with four different MS DOS installed on one hard drive, but only one of them can be visible and the other three of them have to be hidden by a boot manager. All of the primary partition have to fit into the first 2 GB of the hard drive, so we can give each one ~ 512 MB for drive C:. And with the boot manager we can select which of them is visible ready for booting.
      We can install on each primary partition a bootmanager, so we can jump from bootmanager to bootmanager befor we boot DOS from one of the primary partition. On the secondary partition we can use the extended partition typ to use the rest space of the hard drive with more driver letters.
      And from the mainboard bios we can switch to the other IDE channel, so that we can use a secondary drive for booting with additional four primary partition. And if we use an IDE-Controller card or SCSI-Controller card for the ISA/VLB/PCI-Bus then we can enter the card bios of the controller for enable to boot from the controller card.

      Natively, without third party boot managers, Windows 95 retail (or 95A) will happily dual boot with an older version of DOS such as 5.0 or 6.22, but you won’t have FAT32 support with the older version or with 7.0 from 95. You basically hit F8 to bring up the menu to choose the older version as needed. You’ll have to find patches to make 95B or 95C dual boot with an older version, and if you do, be sure there is at least one FAT16 partition for the old version of DOS.
      There are also handy tutorials online to triple boot DOS 6.x (or 5.x), Win 95, and NT 3.51 (or 4.0) which can all share the same FAT16 partition if you wish. Otherwise, if you plan on using more versions of DOS outside of 5.x / 6.x + 7.0, then you’ll want a third party boot manager.

      Nahhh. The DOS commands you need to play games are minimal. Just CD to change folders, DIR to list files and identify collectables.

    EDIT: I got it! I decided to follow the video extremely literally and install DOS 6.22 on the card first. I’m not sure if having dos on there helped or that EZ-BIOS (from ez drive) survived the partition and format did it but it worked:)
    Hmm I’m formatting C: with the /s switch but it’s booting to a blank screen with blinking cursor... it’s not saying “no OS installed” but it’s also not loading DOS. I’m using a Gotek so I had to copy the boot disk contents to it but I made sure to include and un-hide the hidden files. Has this happened to anyone? Would anyone be willing to help with advice or copy and paste the files in the no ram boot disk so I can check I have everything? Thank you!!

    You can also change the Logo.sys with the Windows 98 Splash screen for the MSDOS 7 Splash screen. If you want, I can email it to you

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the thing, when you create boot drive from a boot floppy, there is no LOGO.SYS. It's quite interesting how it works, the steps are a bit different compared to having installed Windows 98 from CD.

    • @huguia
      @huguia 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh! Didn't know about that. I've used this method before to install MSDOS and if you copy another LOGO.SYS it shows the newly copied file. But that's only aestetics. MSDOS 7.1 also has native support for LFN, which is great.
      Great video as usual.

    Recently set up a Pentium 4 with Windows 98SE and configured it to boot into Dos 7.1 and Windows independently. I wanted to come up with a text-mode full screen intro logo and came up with the logo from here: www.reddit.com/r/DOS/comments/7z1csd/msdos_full_screen_boot_logo_text_mode/ Thought you might find it interesting, your videos really inspired me to see how well I could turn this machine into a viable DOS and Windows 98 gaming machine.

    Fat32 can support of up tp 32GB max. NTFS can support up to 2 TB.

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea I wouldn't go by wikipedia here. 120 GB is more or less the limit for Windows 98 and I've used such drives with FAT32 many times.

    • @LovelyAlanna
      @LovelyAlanna 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      the 32gb limit is imposed by Windows, if you format your drive with another software you'll be able to get the 137gb limit

    • @aptiveviennapro
      @aptiveviennapro 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. Windows will not recognise it. (Or was I wrong?)
      And what software are you talking about?

    • @LovelyAlanna
      @LovelyAlanna 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Windows will recognize it, it just doesn't format them in that size to promote the NTFS file system, you can use partition magic, gparted on Linux, pretty much every partition manager but Windows will do the job, I even remember that somebody I knew had a 2TB hard drive formatted on Fat32, how he passed the limit I don't know, he expained but I don't quite remember, what I can tell you is that it's posible to format them up to 137gb drives, and Windows will read them.
