What I Eat in a Week | D1 Student Athlete | UC Berkeley Swimmer

  • This is what I eat in a week as a D1 Student-Athlete at UC Berkeley (Cal) on the Men’s Swim Team. This week, my diet didn’t differ much from what I normally eat and that is what I wanted to show you all, a real diet of a D1 Athlete. As an NCAA Student-Athlete, we are constantly burning calories as I practice up to 20 hours a week in between weights practices and the pool, thus we need lots and lots of food. At Cal, there are lots of options for us such as Grab n Go, and lots of amazing local food places around campus such as Ikes, Cheese n Stuff, Mezzo, and Chipotle. Many people will say that swimmers eat a lot due to the legendary Michael Phelps diet and I hope that this video can attest to that. I’m eating between 3-5 meals a day and still having to find little ways in between to fuel my body.

    Yes! The freezer trick with oatmeal is key, also thickens it up a bit more. Another trick for getting oatmeal to cool down faster is to microwave it in a wider bowl (I just use one of those larger rectangle Tupperware containers) to give it more surface area to cool off.

    Hey Kyle! Great video :) Even though my father isn’t a student athlete at the #1 public university in the country, he still knows how to make some microwave oatmeal. Here’s a tip: if you microwave it for less time, you won’t have to put it in the freezer for 5 minutes!

      Obviously your dad doesn’t have to be a student athlete to know that if you hear it for a shorter amount of time, then you get soggy uncooked oats!! Gotta use the freezer method Lauren!

    6:50, lolll me too! I also put my oatmeal in the freezer too becuz it’s too hot, sometimes i forget abt it completely and the oatmeal I made gets completely frozen

    Sir, did you come in to UC Berkeley with a lot of AP/IB credits or Honors classes from High school?

      Not as many as you would think. I only took 4 AP classes which put me ahead a whole semester upon getting to Berkeley. However, since I was an athlete, I wasn’t taking as many as my peers in high school. I know of students that take well over 10 AP classes!

    How does this work, do you basically eat, what you think is right or do you have like a diet plan?

      It's all about fueling yourself appropriately when you need it. Some days I will need to fuel myself less given that I have less volume in the pool or weight room. We don't have a diet plan but are all rather mindful of our goals and how we fuel ourselves.

    a) Buy reg oatmeal (cheaper) b) boil with water and milk once a week c) put in freg. d) take out half portion and heat in microwave e) other half cold = cheap and right temp.

      @@KyleMillis cut up an apple and add it to your oatmeal when cooking and sprinkle some cinnamon (Dollar Store).
      The reason I said anything, you are the only person (your age and "jock") I see doing any cooking

    If my oatmeal is too hot sometimes I'll pour cold oat milk on top - it brings it to the right temperature.

      @@KyleMillis I like steel cut oats which take a while to make. Sometimes I'll make a batch, then pour oat/almond milk on top. I'll keep a batch of hard boiled eggs in my fridge. Then all I have to do is scoop some oatmeal out and throw it in the microwave. I have tried throwing the hard boiled egg in the oatmeal, but it often explodes in the microwave :(, so you might want to keep it cold.

      He does eat a lot!! It depends on the time of the season, honestly this was a pretty realistic week for me, some weeks I eat much less. Rarely will I eat more than this. I didn’t show it but I tend to consume a lot of smoothies as well in a week (missed the grocery store run this week)
