What's nice is seeing both strong minds with great discipline in strokes. They both won Grand slam from working extremely hard 👍👍.This is for sure not boring players can learn a lot from this like constructing a point and being mentally and physically strong🎾🎾

Arantxa was one of the all time greats particularly on clay. She could run down any ball and wore down her opponents on clay. The only 2 who beat her were Steffi and Monica. But even with those 2 she could beat 1 and lose the final. Had it not been for those greats she would have won double digits. This match was towards the end of her career and she had a positive record against Conchita.
    14 to 4
She in fact had a positive or neutral head to head against Serena, Chrissy, Lindsay, Justine, Capriati

I remember this one well, and as an avid Conchita fan i was delighged and surprisded. Conchita skilfully tied Arantxa up in nots, and took advantage of some clear fatigue. People forget that Conchita was perfectly capable of opening up on that forehand side.

Everyone really was expecting Arantxa to win this one, given her record at Roland Garros and record in big matches against Conchita. But Arantxa never showed up. She seemed physically and mentally flat after her wins earlier in the tournament. A sign perhaps that, like an old boxer, all of those long tough matches against the likes of Steffi Graf had taken their toll.

After how dominant Conchita was on the clay in 95, she had a resurgence in 2000..semis in Australia, won in Berlin and then finals here and back in the top 3.

Arantxa played two monumental matches vs Schett and Venus and came completely deflated to this semi… I don’t think she would have beaten Pierce in the finals but it would have been a nice for her to reach another final at the French.

I wonder whats their relationship like back then when they were the top Spanish players for a long time and played fed cup together

From my understanding, they got along quite well. While they were rivals on the court, there was no animosity between them. In my opinion, Conchita was likeable and decent... ASV well that's another matter.

They always seemed like they had a solid friendship, and they still talk about each other fondly, but good question. They certainly spent a lot of time together!

They should have played more doubles together at slams? I only remember their Fed cup matches..

Arantxa has been as consistent as ever since 1988 at Roland Garros. Exceptional. But this time she got bogged down in Conchita's game and, unlike Mary in the final, didn't have enough definitive shots.

Arantxa beat Martinez most of the time and I was shocked by the result.

Even though the scoreline was lopsided in favour of Conchita, it was still a really edgy and nervous match from her. If ASV had played a little better the match would've been much closer.
Conchita had a beautiful game but at times she just went into moonball autopilot. Didn't really have the killer instinct of her peers.

    • @th8257
      @th8257 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think she had real lack of belief. In so many of her matches against Graf and Seles, she looked like she'd decided before the match that she wasn't going to win.

@@th8257 I agree, she rarely looked confident in these big matches.

"Winning ugly". But it's still winning. Smart players know that you have to do that from time to time.

A battle between two of the most annoying, disliked competitors on the WTA. Conchita was a junk player, and Arantxa was notorious for complaining and gamesmanship. How anyone can stand to watch such boring, anticlimactic tennis is beyond me.

So why waste your life hanging round the comments section of a match that is so bad?
