Been doing this for over a year. If you're like me and can't justify paying cable prices for what it offers but want for example more nuanced weather forecasts on-demand (recorded on DVR) vs. what you get online which for me, is either 1) in text (like most) or 2) station website video forecasts that often where I live are not always posted in a timely manner and later than the corresponding weather forecast (one reason that might be due to stations making money off of cable subscriptions according to YT channel Antenna Man and stations would rather you subscribe to cable if weather is one of the reasons you subscribe to cable but I don't know..this has been going on for years how hard is it to post a damn video?) *THEN it's useful to have TiVo's Edge DVR for an atennna.* Streaming options for sports help as well if they're not some of the more expensive options but honestly, if this new even bigger conglomerate thinks they're going to charge people a ton of money and take them back to cable level prices or more, I think people need to say "No thanks." Read books more. Get outside more and I don't know..actually play sports. More than a small percentage of these people that are really into sports that attend games look like they haven't played the sport they're apparently REALLY into in MANY years..or even any kind of physical activity other than walking to and from their car. Cost for the all-in *TiVo antenna DVR on-sale* is more up front at $318 (incl tax) but pales in comparison over the long-term to cable and there is no subscription fee, it's up front.
I’ve gotten my abc, nbc, fox and cbs sports over antenna for the last 12 years while streaming the rest of my tv/movie entertainment on platforms like Hulu, Netflix and Prime Video
Pretty sure John Skipper is the subject matter expert here. David kept talking over him and was working pretty hard to be the smartest guy in the room. I think David’s points would be more palatable if he relaxed a little and let others talk.
Honestly, I'm exactly the market for this. All I want is sports. I don't want to pay $100 a month for a bunch of reality shows and TV for idiots. Of course, the price matters greatly.
but, its a limited amount of sports. you're only getting nfl games which are on espn, no NFL network, no CBS or NBC, I love European soccer, so, I have peacock and ESPN+ for all other soccer info. Then, Amazon for TNF
To answer David's primary question: "who is this for?", It's for sports fans who ONLY maintain their cable subscriptions for sports. This is probably a huge demo. Cable is dead. As a 30 year old, I can't remember the last time I tuned in for live non-sports television. The NFL will have to be figured out (CBS, RedZone??), but you'll probably be able to watch most of your sports content between this package and an Amazon subscription (RSNs). I think this is sports jumping off the sinking ship that is cable and is the first domino to fall that ends in Comcast/DirecTV/etc all sinking.
Right, but do you also pay for Max, Hulu, Netflix or any movie subscriptions? why not just have literally everything imaginable under one subscription? That's what cable was, and that's why it worked.
Agree with this being the true fall of cable. CBS, Redzone, Sunday Ticket, NBC all have streaming offerings. This is truly them not holding up cable anymore. The reason there isn’t one subscription is that companies don’t want to split the revenue. At some point, these companies are gonna realize that they can’t recreate what Netflix. Then they’ll come together to make streaming profitable.
You could have this new idea and then get your basic channels (cbs, abc, nbc etc.) and save a fortune and have 90% of sports that’s available to the market and only pay for one thing
Been waiting for this and making jokes about it for years. Happens more often than most realize. Many of the dinosaur big box stores getting pushed aside by Amazon used to be the nimble disruptors of their day using catalogues to reach their audience in their homes and having big central warehouses to distribute their goods. Then they shifted to brick and mortar to reach ever more shoppers until they became the industry they were wiping out way back in the day.
David Sampson sounds so out of touch in this discussion. There's very little surprise when one considers he hails from the world of baseball, that has made their living off empty stadiums and regional broadcast TV deals.
I actually started YTTV at $27/mo and kept that for years while recieving ESPN and the other sports networks. My grandfather price was only revoked when Discovery channels became included, in which I cancelled immediately for doubling my monthly cost for channels I have no interest in.
It's essentially a linear cable TV package, that only includes the channels owned by the three companies that have sports. These same programmers refuse to let traditional cable TV companies offer these kinds of "skinny bundles," but are doing it themselves. It would be good for someone who only subscribes to TH-camTV or Hulu Live for sports, and also can get over the air TV via antenna for local NFL games. EDIT: Not sure if they get to this, but another reason they're doing this is, with only a 1/3 stake, the expenses don't go on their balance sheet, it just comes out of cash. It's a defensive move against cord cutting that is accretive.
Do people forget about the old school bunny ears that give you fox cbs abc nbc for free? nowadays you just buy a digital antenna and get those for free. I plan on getting the bundle and using the antenna
22:00 big reason CBS and NBC are not in on this is actually explained in the pod; both networks already offer their linear content on streaming...id assume because NBC and CBS are free-to-air, while Disney + WBD have a cable paywall in front of most sports content, and FOX hasn't really figured out how to approach DTC sports despite having a lot of great content available free-to-air, aka free on their app.
my parents have a tv, landline, and internet package that is around $175. I could break up those components into their own things but the convenience of something they are already familiar with and the cost of those things all together is a great deal
I think the target of this new service is people who primarily use unauthorized overseas streams to watch sports. They think that audience wants a higher quality stream without paying for a full youtube cable subscription. That's the segment of the market they need to reclaim.
haven't had cable or a streaming service in about 8 years. still see all the sports i want. that's maybe not American capitalism but it's certainly American ingenuity

It will be interesting to see how this works. All depends on the price. Went away from DirectTV/cable because of the constant channel disputes, higher bills and extra fees for equipment and such. Getting what you want direct to consumer is more streamlined. If they set a price that is too expensive people just won't shell out the money for it.
I have TH-camtv for cfb and nfl and then cancel it as soon as the Super Bowl is over. But I’m still paying 75 a month for 5-6 months ill happily sign up for this app and probably keep it longer if it’s only 40-50 a month
The irony of David having Hulu is that Hulu was a conglomeration of ABC, Fox, and NBC when it started, not too different than what is being proposed here. I think the hurdles will be convincing people the price is worth it and not having RSNs like Bally.
You guys don't get it.... It's marketed for sports fans who only want sports an don't want to pay $80-100 plus dollars for package of ther non sports junk (big bundles) when they just want sports!! That simple

They are accelerating the rate of cord-cutting by under-pricing the sports bundle. They will force all the sports to this bundle and when cable surrenders, then MAYBE streaming can be priced high enough to earn a profit.
Something you’re overlooking is that the word sports means something different to everyone. For some people Sports means the Westminster dog show for some people sports means college football. And some people sports means neither of those things. Why would a dog show watcher paid to see college football, and why would a college football enthusiast pay to see dog shows? Or Olympics? Or Motorsports? A bundle just means certain fans are paying half of their money for the opportunity to watch sports that they will never watch.
About the question about who this product is for: People who are content with an antenna to pick up over the air channels (you only have to pay once for this) and want the sports that are on ESPN and Fox and TNT/TBS because of the games that are only there. It's a big demographic because it'll be cheaper and good enough
